Gay Issues Forum Is a First

At tonight's forum on gay rights that will draw six of the Democratic candidates to Los Angeles, there are two obvious questions: Does John Edwards, whose wife Elizabeth and daughter Cate have both said they support gay marriage, have any more relatives eager to disagree with him on the issue? And will any of the candidates confess to forum fatigue, since it will the Democrats third wooing of a key party interest group in six days, following events for liberal bloggers and labor union members?

The forum, put on by the Human Rights Campaign and Logo, a gay and lesbian television network that is part of MTV Networks, will include six of the eight Democrats taking questions, although they will not be on the stage at the same time. HRC said Senators Joe Biden (D-Del.) and Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) couldn't attend, citing scheduling conflicts and the GOP candidates declined the invitation. While gay activists have long been courted by Democrats, this event, being shown on Logo and its website logoonline.com at 9 p.m.. marks the first concerted televised appeal to gay voters ever in a presidential contest.

Democrats, who have been more unabashedly pro-gay than in past campaigns in calling for policy changes such as the end of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy for gays in the military, will have to navigate carefully on gay marriage, which activists support but the majority of the public does not. Expect Edwards to repeat his previous remarks in debates that he's not ready to embrace gay marriage, but reminding activists that his wife and daughter do.

First of all, for a lot of people who are all for expressing your opinions and being free to be who you are, you sure are jumping on Mr. Marvin. Anyway, I also think people should have a choice, but I'm not sure America, or myself, is ready for gay marriage. I think it's good that Edwards is actually telling the truth, unlike most politicians.

The poll, at the HRC/Logo sponsored debate, showing Obama 1st, Kucinich 2nd & Hillary 3rd is based on who's more cuter and who's more not-so-politically saavy. Hillary will come out on top at the primary and the general, we know who can make equality happen in the long run.

When he says "only men and women fit together," marvin1 exposes his lack of knowledge of anatomy -- in fact a great many heterosexuals 'fit together' in exactly the same way same-gender couples do, and consider it perfectly normal, even if it doesn't make babies. When he says "only men and women can procreate," marvin1 embarrasses himself with his lack of understanding of biology, as well as his bottom-line bias (that gays and lesbians aren't really "men and women" in the way straight people are. The fact is, gay men and lesbian women have been procreating for time immemorial, and have also parented millions of children through adoption and fostering who were unwanted by heterosexual couples. Thankfully, recent scientific advances have also made it possible for same-gender couples to procreate within their own committed relationships, just as fertility-challenged heterosexuals may now do.

Obama 38%
Kucinich 24%
Clinton 18%
Gravel 9%
Edwards 7%
Richardson 4%

marvin1:

A gay's private life does nothing to affect your priate life. Get over it, and pray for your own soul while you're at it. Bigot.

Read the Bible and then send the homosexuals home to practice their un-natural life style in private. I am offended with their public display of an un-natural act.
Only Men and Women fit together, and only Men and Women can procreate.
Homosexuals, get a life!

The Trail could have saved me (and others) the horrible possibility of a blistered mouse-button-finger by doing the clicking itself. So as to reduce the number of blistered MBFs, here's the missing info:

Chris Dodd's scheduling conflict: An Evening at Greengate with Cheshire County Voters, Nelson NH

Joe Biden's scheduling conflict: No public events scheduled.

Come on, Joe, you can do better. How much lead time is needed to schedule a meet-and-greet in East Moose Belch (or something equally credible as a scheduling conflict).

Ah, the times are a-changing. Gays are committed and active voters. And they have learned the lesson of activism around elections.

Message to Edwards: It's never too late to change your stance on gay marriage. It will show more strength and courage on your part than anything else you can do on this issue. It will show that you listened to the minister from North Carolina during the CNN - Youtube debate who pointed out the inconsistency of your view. It will show that you listen to your wife and daughter when they offer you good common sense advice on expanding civil rights in this country.

And the other pertinent question: will the Washington Post grammar-check before posting? ("...since it will the Democrats third wooing..." - if you insert "be" at some point we won't hold it against you).

I think the snark tone employed against Edwards is slightly unfair, especially given that this is pretty much where the country's at right now - split between not wanting gay marriage and not wanting discrimination.

But how dare a politician try to reflect the modern culture. That is the realm of ART...and political commentators.
