Clintons to Return $850,000 in Hsu Funds

Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign dramatically severed all ties to disgraced fundraiser Norman Hsu, announcing Monday night it will return more than $850,000 he raised from some 260 donors.

Clinton's campaign, one of several Democratic committees that Hsu raised money for or donated to, also has decided to increase its screening of major fund-raisers, requiring them to submit to the extraordinary additional step of a criminal background check, campaign aides said.

Hsu, an apparel businesman, fell from grace earlier this month after it was revealed he was a fugitive in a 15-year-old criminal case in California. On Monday, the Los Angeles Times reported he also is under investigation in connection with recent business dealings.

Clinton's campaign decided more than a week ago to return some $23,000 Hsu personally donated to her various campaigns. After learning of a Los Angeles Times report that the FBI was investigating Hsu, Clinton on Monday personally ordered her campaign to return all the money he has raised, a senior aide said.

"Mr. Hsu donated to numerous charities and more than two dozen candidates and committees," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said. "Despite conducting a thorough review of public records, our campaign like others were unaware of Mr. Hsu's decade-plus old warrant.

"To help ensure agsint this type of situation in the future, our campaign will also institute vigorous additional vetting procedures on our bundlers, including criminal background checks," Wolfson added. "In any instances where a source of a bundler's income is in question, the campaign will take affirmative steps to verify its origin."

The dramatic return of all Hsu-raised donations was aimed at ending a controversy that awakened comparisons to Bill Clinton's 1990s fund-raising scandal and renewed scrutiny of others major fund-raisers and donors inside Sen. Clinton's presidential campaign.

Sen. Clinton "simply didn't want to have to keep answering questions about a bundler whose background is now clearly in question," a senior adviser said, speaking only on condition of anonymity.

The move also is likely to increase the pressure on other Democratic candidates to give back not only the money Hsu donated but also the money he raised.

The Washington Post reported last week that Hsu helped host a fund-raiser for Barack Obama's political action committee back in 2005. The Democratic senatorial fundraising commitee acknowledged Hsu raised money for it, too, and the Democratic National Committee dislosed Hsu helped arrange an event with Party Chairman Howard Dean and prospective donors last month, just one day before the first news stories surfaced about Hsu's background surfaced.

Edward Timperlake, a Naval Academy graduate who worked on the staff of the House Committee on Rules dealing with national security and William Triplett legal counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with several decades of experience working on China and national security have compiled the documentation on the Clinton's criminal associations with the Chinese communists in their book YEAR OF THE RAT. They have unraveled Clintons web of deceit and followed their dirty money to the gambling dens, brothels, and Chinese Communists intelligence operations of East Asia, exposing the betrayal of America--by the Clinton White House. Every american needs to know this story before its too late. We have known for years Hill and Bill are serial liars. Are we really going to be taken in again. Fool me once shame of you, fool me twice SHAME ON ME..... we need to keep this story alive.

Check for criminal records, huh.

Well, maybe they could expand their scope beyond political donations and start with Teddy Kennedy or Marion Barry or Gary Studds...or how about that lying, perjuring, disbarred sack-of-crap Bill "Peter Pan" Clinton ?

As for the $250,000...maybe they could have Sandy Berger stuff it down his pants or have William Jefferson stash it in his freezer for safe keeping.

You people have got it all wrong. The smartest, prettiest, most wonderful woman in the whole USA wouldn't *knowingly* take dirty money. You're all just jealous that she has such a wonderful, devoted husband who loves her and that she has such a happy, successful marriage.

("Duh," for the sarcastically challenged.)

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! I wonder how many of these commentators who fulminate about the Clintons' Asian connections subscribe to -- or, in some cases, work for -- the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Washington Times?

Why is this thread entitled: Clintons to Return $850,000 in Hsu Funds? Shouldn't it be Clinton, singular and not plural? Sen. Clinton is running for President, not Sen. Clinton AND Bill Clinton. Even though this is a blog, that is sloppy journalism.

Why not start criminal checks on the Clintons.. that is where all the corruption starts. And if they donate this money to a charity it will probably be the Clinton Charity that Bill sends all his speaking $$ to. Tax free and they have total control. Bill is collecting 2+M from Dubie for a couple of appearances a year. Think of the Millions he could get if they controled the WH. These people are immoral and dishonest.

As smart as the Clinton's are supposed to be, you would think that while Bill was pardoning all the other felons like Marc Rich, he could have found time to pardon good ole Norman Hsu as well. Had he done that, Hillary wouldn't be giving back anything right now! I guess Marc and Denise have something Norman just couldn't offer.

What gives the Clinton Campaign the ability to do criminal background checks?

Posted by: radish12 | September 11, 2007 3:17 PM | Report abuse

Where are all of the "investigative reporters" who searched every inch of Pres. Bush's past? Not one of them did the least bit of investigating on the Hsu scandal, a hustler who appeared out of nowhere and handed out money to the democrats like it was so much candy. And, every one of them took it in the same way - no investigation into this "out of nowhere" millionaire. That was exactly what happened when Bubba was being given Chinese money for his political purposes (and God knows what else).
I am a WWII vet and former long time member of the democrat party, and was once a fairly large contributor to some of the democrat candidates, and I know the system. This kind of stuff is as criminal as it gets, and Hillary and all the rest of the donees knew it!!!
Wake up Americans! Do not let your political party alliances blind you to the greatest threat this Country has ever faced, which is being totally ignored by the democrats, and, worse than that, the democrats are now openly allied with America's enemies (compare the recent bin Laden tape with most utterance by major democrat Senators/Reps and presidential candidates).

Some day the truth will emerge about the strange, and as yet untold, story of the death of Vince Foster!!

OK, we have an idea about what happened, but questions abound, and the Post (or any other media outlet) can, with little, difficulty, answer.
1. Who paid for the charted jet which Hsu used to fly to Calif.?
2. How did he pay for the private room on the train?
3. What drugs did Hsu have with him on the train and what doctor, if any, prescribed them?
4. What connection does Hsu have with the Paw family?
5. To whom will Hillary pay the $850,000 she says she will return? How does she know that such persons actually put up the money she is "returning"?
6. How will anyone know to whome the money actually is paid?
Those are simple questions - look a little closer and many more should come to mind.

Just as the mass media assisted in the cover-up of the murder of Vince Foster, they are assisting in this massive attempt of the Chinese to get "their candidate" elected President of ther US as they did with Bubba.

Is the Washington Post still a Clinton "mouthpiece"?

It really tells you a whole lot when a campaign feels the need (or claims to feel the need) to do background checks on their contributors! Has anyone given any thought about why so many criminals are attracted to her? Whenever I think of Hillary, a familiar Bible verse comes to mind "...and deliver us from evil."

Posted by: mzsallyb | September 11, 2007 2:39 PM | Report abuse

I am a democrat. I am a woman and I am THOROUGHLY ASHAMED of Senator Hillary. It has been mind boggling to me that so many women consider her to be "THE WOMAN" who will give power to women. Someone on this list said they were surprised that so many replublicans read the Washington Post. Have they considered a possibility that not all the people who profess their displeasure at Senator "slippery" Hillary are republicans, but democrats who absolutely abhor the idea of her carrying on the "women's right" torch to the highest office in the land? She is the most phony, opportunistic and corrupt woman I have ever seen, and I have seen many in my lifetime.

Pleeeeeaz, don't put her with the rest of the women folk out there. It's just sad to see how she will get another "pass" and a "hoodwink" from everyone. If she is the eventual democratic nominee, I am sure I will be voting republican no matter if it's GWB all over again. At-least ineptitude can be overcome, not treachery.

What can we expect with the Clinton's. They gave the Chinese the technology for ICBM missiles to reach the USA.If we dig really deep we might find all kinds of Hsu's in Bill and Hillary's closet. They truly are traitors against this Republic.

What's truly awful about all of this, is that there ARE honest, decent candidates from both parties. Why on earth are the front runners crooks like Clinton and Gulianni? I susoect that it is becasue they are the ones that are so easily bought by corporate interests. Can anyone imagine Fred Thompson or John Edwards doing this sort of thing. Or, Barak Obama or Ron Paul or John McCain or Dennis Kucinich? Like their politics or not, you kow these people do what they think is right, what they think is best for the country. So, why on earth are people so supportive of crooked swine like the Clintons's or Dick Cheney? Peope that regularly sell this country out, that chase money, that have no concept of right and wrong or genuine patriotism.

FUNNY, how everyone misses the real point. As the wife of a former US President, isn't Hillary protected 24/7 by Secret Service? And isn't part of their job to perform background checks on those close to HRC? And wouldn't a background check have - oh, I don't know - found a CA WARRANT outstanding for 'Citizen' Hsu? She's about as 'surprised' at this bundling scandal as she was about Bill's lies over who was sleeping in his Oval Office..... She is a true icon of the Left, and their slogan remains - 'That which does not stick to us makes us slicker'. Democrats must be proud.

If no one had found out about it, Hillary would not feel obliged to reject any of the money. She is only doing it (and supposedly conducting investigations on other suspect contributions) because she wants to look good, not because she has a shred of decency or honesty in her entire body. I do not trust or believe one single thing that either of the Clintons do or say, and I don't think they do, either. Their stance on any one issue depends on what makes them look good at the time, and the only constant in their lives is their self-absorbed lust for power. I am ashamed that I ever voted for Bill, but that was when I was stupid enough to swallow his line of BS.

The disparity in the media between Republican "trumped up" charges and real crimes committed by Democrat leaders is so astounding and now, blatenly obvious, that one would have to be wearing donkey blinders not to admit to the differences in how these scandels are portrayed. Anyone who isn't "smart enough" to be aware of what's going on in their own campaign isn't "smart enough" to be elected President - Hillary is NOT QUALIFIED - PERIOD!

Democrats steal and are just as corrupt as the Republicans. The big difference is that the press blows up and keeps the GOP mistakes running for months. The dem's get off with a couple soft excuse articles. The Clintons have been rife with money grubbing all the way from the rose law firm, whitewater on up. Don't forget selling missile secrets to the Chinese Army for campaign cash for bill. That has to be unmatched for treachery. The current Chinese missile gains and their current push to space can be directly attributed to William Jefferson Clinton and his filthy dirty campaign cash. Nothing can top that. Not Abramhoff (sp), not Exxon, nothing you can say will top that.

stu... I agree about the corrupt politicians, they are in both camps. There is no doubt that both Repubs and Dems do the bidding and dance to the tune of the biggest contributor. There is one difference in that most (not every one) of the Repubs who get busted get thrown out or pushed out. On the Dem side the excuses come right and left and most (not every one) stay right where they are. In the Clinton handbook there is an added layer because they get an additional free "oops, sorry".

Remember Sandy Berger? How many "he is just so forgetful" excuses did we hear? A slimy excuse for a slimy crime.

It a typical response from the so called "brilliant" people when they get caught redhanded. Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were considered highly intelligent people. But when they got caught they had no clue how it happened.

The difference between the Clintons and a bank robber is that when the Clintons get caught they are allowed to just return the stolen loot and walkaway. I'm continually amazed that, on one hand Hillary is held up as such a brilliant woman and on the other hand, she can't remember anything when all of her illegal activities are uncovered. I guess it's called palusible deniability, except it's not plausible, just deniable, and the media will give her another pass. Just like the 'good old days' with her husband. After all, how can you get that upset with family traditions.

Just follow the money, because this is just the beginning. If she volunteered the 850K you can bet she is trying to get out front of this since it will just get bigger. 850K will seem like a drop in the bucket when this is done. If anyone thinks Hsu was the only "bundler" then you need to check into rehab. If he lives, he will give up many more blackmail artists before long.

Giuliani's South Carolina Chairman Thomas Ravenel was charged with distributing cocaine. Did I mention he's also the current State Treasurer. Does anyone remember Giuliani's good buddy Bernard Kerik. Mitt Romney's National Fundraising Co-Chair Allen Fabian was charged with embezzling $32 million dollars to set up a bogus non-profit. Did you forget about Larry Craig, Romney's Idaho Campaign Chairman? And what about all the former republican members of Congress who now spend their days behind bars on our dime. And there's still more to come. Currently, there are 12 members of Congress under investigation. Ouch, 11 Republicans and 1 Democrat. And you gotta love a guy who stashes $90,000 in his freezer.

I don't blame the chinese for trying to get the democrats in congress because like governments are usually allied. They probably figure if they get American communists like John Edwards or Hillary Clinton in power, they will have better luck working with (manipulating) the US.

I do blame Hillary and Barak for not knowing about his background. I know it's hard to check every donor, but this guy was well known for shelling out very large amounts of cash, you would think they would take the time to investigate the source of the cash.

Richardson is a prime example. As the anchor baby of an illegal alien he proclaims:

"Forty-three million of us all around the country can decide not just what is best for Latinos but what is best for America."

So there fellow citizens you have it in a nutshell, surely diversity at its worst.

John Solomon. Do you ever have something positive to say about a Democrat?

Posted by: kingsbridge77 | September 10, 2007 10:02 PM | Report abuse

Mr. Solomon, you deserve the loons you have commenting here. Read them, and consider whether your use of the WaPo's platform to help enable their candidates is wise. I understand you have some sort of fixation on Dems, why that is I can't say, but it is quite obvious. That's fine, but as a practical matter, can we as a nation really withstand another GOP presidency right now. Please, think this through.

Cut Hillary some slack, no presidential candidate has ever returned $850,000.00 dollars?!

Imagine if this was the Obama campaign...

Sorry, Hill fans, this Hsu 'incident' has just graduated into a full-fledged 'scandal'.

Clinton's campaign "inexperienced" is showing...

The source of Hsu's money is from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Fearing that Hsu would expose the CCP if he was brought to court or for questioning, the CCP wanted to kidnap and kill him. Hsu knew it and tried to escape death. He was found delirious in Colorado, where he was arrested by the FBI. Hsu's life is in danger.

I don't trust Hillary to be a true Democrat fighting Bush-allied greed-mongers any more than I trust or trusted Bill or their millionaire and billionaire pals.

Wow HILLARY was sure 'surprised' it wasn't more than $850,000 dollars. Why she was just as 'sirprised' when CHARLIE YRE and 120 other CHINESE AGENTS had to flee the country not to testify against D^CKHEAD & CLINTON INC. HILLARY has claimed that she was 'surprised' NORMAN HSU was a fugitive convicted felon giving her $MILLIONS in campaign donations - just as she was 'surprised' that her WHITEWATER BILLING RECORDS didn't surface on a desk in the WHITE HOUSE residence quarters until after the 'statute of limitations' had expired - just as she was 'surprised' that 'FATTY MONICA' and all the other 'BIMBETTES' were doing her 'pretend-husband' D ^CKHEAD - just as she was 'surprised' at whom fired those WHITE HOUSE TRAVEL PEOPLE - just as she was 'surprised' that someone had taken her personal papers/files from VINCE FOSTER's ofice immediately after he was found dead - what's next??? "Oh BILL(aka D ^CKHEAD) you are happy to see me - quite a'STIFFY' after all these years" - YEAH QUITE A 'STIFF' SURPRISE EH??? HILLARY 'THE MOST SURPRISED FEMALE ON THE PLANET'.

Does anyone know the root cause of attraction between the Clintons and Asian dirty money? Bill had his revolving door with Chinese intel folks and Hill now seems flush with Asian cash that is smelly.

Hey, cut Hillary some slack. At least she didn't invade a country to install Hsu as its new leader (unlike GWB and convicted fraudster Ahmed Chalabi).

Clintons take hundreds of thousands $$$ from the Chinese. Clintons tranfer top secret missile data to Chinese. Vince Foster turns up dead. Sandy Berger steals top secret documents.

What happened to giving the dirty money to charity???? Or did Hillary discover that she couldn't give it to other democrats? Are they charging the "returnees" fees for processing? How is this deduction being posted on the Old Account Ledger? You can't tell me the HRC campaign is footing the bill (no pun intended!) for all the bank fees, etc. This sounds petty, but I don't buy the Noble Spin. HRC got caught!!!!

I think I'll wait to see if they return all of the donations from those Indian companies that provide H1-B workers that take American jobs and all of the outsourcing companies that have given them millions. The Clinton are nothing more than money grubbing trash and as the economy sinks into recession, their politcial hopes will fad right along with our jobs. What scum!
