Who says bipartisanship in Washington is dead?
Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, a conservative Republican contender for president, and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, a liberal Democratic rival, are set to announce a joint plan for Iraq at a news conference later this week.
"Joe and I might be running for the nomination of two different parties, but we agree on one thing: the American people want progress in Iraq and this represents a viable way forward to stability and success," Brownback said in a statement.
Brownback and Biden have both been attempting to distinguish themselves from their party rivals by touting a plan to divide Iraq up into three regions with a decentralized federal government.
In the Senate, they've sponsored an amendment to do just that, and now they're taking the show on the presidential road with a news conference touting their joint idea.
The locale will be the Wakonda Country Club in, where else, Des Moines, Iowa. Sponsored by the Greater Des Moines Committee on Foreign Relations, the pair will highlight their common idea.
"Partisan politics must not come in the way of finding a solution to the war in Iraq," Biden said in the statement.
Their plan may not be enough to help one of them win the White House, however. In the latest Des Moines Register poll of the state, the pair receive 7 percent support -- combined.
