Mrs. Dodd Becomes Temporary Iowan
Worse than married to the mob: married to the presidential campaign. If you're Jackie Clegg Dodd, with two small kids, you've got a dilemma. Husband Chris, the senator, keeps galavanting off to the hinterlands in search of supporters for his longshot White House bid. Solution: Move to Iowa. Become an Iowan, as The Fix noted earlier, until the caucuses in January.
She announced her new in-state status Friday night at the Polk County Democrats dinner-auction at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
"We're trying to make it so that a family with little ones actually survives in the healthiest way, and not seeing their Daddy is not the healthiest thing for these little ones. They absolutely adore their Daddy. It's really hard when he's away," she told reporters.
She said they would be renting a house in northwest Des Moines, and would stay in the house for the first time that night.
"You've seen the house, obviously," a reporter said.
"No, I've seen pictures of the house," she said.
The rented furniture was supposed to arrive Friday. Finding a furnished home is difficult because Iowans aren't as transient as, say, folks in DC or Connecticut, she speculated.
She said she'd return to Washington to fetch her children this week. Her older, Kindergarten-age daughter will attend a local school.
"We're going to be trick-or-treating here. There's been some debate about that. We researched far and wide for the best trick or treating spot, and it happens to be our street in Washington," she said.
For legal reasons, she told the Polk County Democrats, she can't say she has "moved" to Iowa. But the legal prohibition (which she didn't explain) doesn't apply to her children, she said: "Christina and Grace are moving to Iowa and I'm just going to be staying with them for an extended period of time."
