New Giuliani Ad in N.H. Ratchets Up Security Message
GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani will begin airing a new television commercial Wednesday in New Hampshire featuring the release of the Iranian hostages in 1980 just as Ronald Reagan was being sworn into office. In the spot, called "One Hour," Giuliani argues that the best way to deal with tyrants is to stand up to them.
"They released the American hostages in one hour, and that should tell us a lot about these Islamic terrorists that we're facing," Giuliani says in the ad. "The one hour in which they released them was the one hour in which Ronald Reagan was taking the Oath of Office as President of the United States. The best way you deal with dictators, the best way you deal with tyrants and terrorists, you stand up to them. You don't back down." (Watch the ad below.)
Giuliani's ad comes as the latest ABC News-Washington Post poll in New Hampshire shows him struggling. In the survey of likely primary voters, Giuliani is in third behind second-place John McCain and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who is well ahead of the pack with 37 percent support.
The ad features two subjects that Giuliani hopes will help him gain in the state: A focus on fighting terrorism, for which he is well known, and the memory of Ronald Reagan. In the Post poll, Giuliani and McCain are tied for being the most trusted candidate to fight terrorists, with Romney a distant second.
