Race Returns as Topic in Nevada Debate

By Peter Slevin
LAS VEGAS -- Outside among the palm trees, the chanting is more basketball game than political debate.

"Here we go, Edwards! Here we go!"

"O-bama! O-eight! O-bama! O-eight!"

Hillary Clinton's faithful stood on street corners, waving signs and cheering.

Inside, the three principal survivors of Iowa and New Hampshire tried to figure a way to do some good for themselves four days before the campaign's first presidential contest in the West. Nevada voters will caucus on Saturday.

It has been a week when discussions of race dominated the news, with Clinton and Obama and their surrogates sniping at one another before calling a truce on Monday. Tonight's debate on MSNBC, held on the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, immediately addressed the race in a state with far different demographics than Iowa or New Hampshire.

Clinton, challenged about her campaign's comments, cited King's birthday and praised both Obama and Edwards. She said all three of them, including Edwards, a millworker's son, owe something to the civil rights movement.

"All of us are here as a result of what he did," Clinton said.

Obama backed up Clinton with words of his own about King's legacy. When confronted by Tim Russert with a list of comments compiled by the Obama campaign and attributed to the Clinton campaign and its followers, Obama said, sometimes "supporters and staff get overzealous. They start saying things that I would not say."

The debate is being sponsored by the Nevada Democratic Party, along with 100 Black Men of America, the Nevada African American Leadership Council, Impacto and the College of Southern Nevada.

Twenty minutes into the debate, someone in the audience shouted, "These are race-based questions!"

THERE WILL NEVER BE A CLINTON/OBAMA TICKET

GET OVER IT. SHE HATES HIM AND THE FRACTURE SHE JUST CREATED IS TOO WIDE NOW

Posted by: laplumelefirmament | January 17, 2008 2:40 PM

Can you imagine the trip?

Clinton compared him to MLK meaning that Obama should go back where he belongs namely the street and the ghetto. Johnson compared him to Sidney Poitier, meaning he's too white. Can you picture that just ONE SECOND?

OBAMA IS BOTH BLACK AND WHITE.

I think it was all planned by the Clintons. They are EVIL and they are trying to create confusion in the minds of American people to win this election. THAT IS JUST TOO SCARY.

Hillary, Hillary, Hillary! For all you idiots who support Hillary Clinton, when the moderator asked the question when did all of them consider running for Presidency and she replied, the beginning or the spring of '07. Do you really believe that? Bill and Hillary plotted this from the beginning before she was even in the Senate. You see people, the Clintons and Bushes' might as well be Kings and Queens, we all are just peasants! For 28 years we have had either a Bush on the ticket or a Clinton. So if Hillary is nominated and becomes President it might be 8 years more which bring the total to 35 years of two ruling families. There has to be somebody better than a Bush or a Clinton! Wake up people!! Next it will be Jeb Bush then Chelsea Clinton!!

Very good debate overall. I was glad that Russert and Williams got the race questions out of the way in the beginning. I thought all three candidates gave strong answers. I thought Obama sounded the most thoughtful and least scripted, however. Even if that meant sometimes he paused when talking. . I liked that. I was puzzled by Hillary's "black-brown" references that kind of came out of nowhere. John Edwards is intelligent but not ready for our foreign policy challenges, IMO.

Oops, I meant Kerry, not Edwards!

Socialists all look and smell alike to me!

Posted by: rat-the | January 15, 2008 11:25 PM

LOL!
Billary claims she owns Barack Hussein in the Senate.

But Barack Hussein has run away to Massa Edwards!

Who IS owned, by Teddy"I wanna drive a Country with Water on both Sides!" Kennedy"hic"! ;~)

this race issue is being prompted by msnbc, more so than each campaign & surrogates, & we all should be sick of it, if any candidate is responsible, it is surrogates of obama e.g. jessie jackson jr. the only thing i heard that was new was there will be help for people struggling with mortgages, and we will stop SOME of the war, and pull out some troops, i agree that we can't afford to leave so quickly as those on the far left want, but we simply can't afford to continue to spend all of the money that we are spending now. the wapo had a story, quoting sen. stevens - 15,000,000,000 per month - elimate tax cuts for the wealthy, and help the middle class,

the candidates handled the race issue deftly and with class. not the same can be said of any republican whose first response is to deny or fling the trash right back in the face of their accuser. it was refreshing to see them all rise above the media feeding frenzy and agree to move on to more important issues.

in terms of who won, hillary spanked the schoolboys and sent them home to their parents like second string debaters. now i understand why the media and republican political machine have tried so hard to cast her in such unattractive terms. she is woman who learned to play the game as well as any man and she definitely has done her homework.

i had to pause and rethink my wavering support for her and realize that the republicans are truly AFRAID of her. unlike edwards with the "trial lawyer" tag and obama's drug use, they really don't have anything concrete on her except her "unelectability"--a term that means virtually nothing except "just because...!" can you imagine her in a debate with any of the republican candidates? she would make them all look like mean-spirited, one-issue, warmed over bushies who through incompetence and hubrus dovetailed the economy, our reputation and our integrity into a spiraling cesspool.

i hope she wins the nomination and shows the world that the old boys frat club had its chance and made a mockery and a mess of this nation.

hillary and obama in 2008. restore our belief in america....

There was a discussion about education, including pre-school. Everything was going fine and then...Clinton said this was "a black-brown issue". Say what??? I thought this was a pretty universal issue. Does she really think white kids have no need for pre-school? And if so, why? (I found her comment appalling and demeaning, as it implied parents of a certain color do their job on their own, and others don't.)

Going to LV and inserting their noses in the Mafia's ring muscle would be a good first step.

Obama is winning the debate as best as I can tell. For the first time in any of the debates he looks like a commander in chief, and he's the only one who as made the audience laugh. He seems very comfortable tonight.

Posted by: lumi21us | January 15, 2008 10:22 PM

You've got to be kidding me! First they spend 20 minutes talking about race, then they rehash his drug use, then they take away his question so that he can request clarification from Edwards regarding an issue already under discussion? I don't care how many forced laughs they get from the candidates, these people aren't fit to moderate a campaign for dogcatcher.

OK, I'll be a NICE little RAT, and let this poor mangy Cat out of the Bag!

The Dimocrat Party LIKES to keep Groups! With Mexicans as Mexicans counting on Mexican Handouts that were promised to THEM, and Blacks wanting what was promised to them, and Gays, Jews, Indians, Rural, Urban, Union, Etc., Etc., all feeling they have had THIER Vote Paid for, and expecting to cash in(At the wealthy White Person's expense), The Dimocrat Socialists secure their gullible and often shorted Base!

I would think sooner or later people would eventually catch on!

Guess that is why they want all the new-coming Invaders-to replenish the Ranks of Gullibles!

America is STRONG, because Groups have NO Constitutional Rights!

INDIVIDUALS DO!

I think Edwards is getting slighted in this debate if you can call it that.

No sparks after those first Q's from Williams and Russert. Very tame evening...so far.

After weeks of hearing nothing but horse race from these so-called political experts, now we get to hear them ask horse-race questions to the candidates. How about a single question that would tell us something about how these people might govern? It is shameful the way that the news coverage alternates between incompetence and mournful navel-gazing as to why the coverage is so incompetent. What next - will Tim Russert actually ask the candidates about the reasons why he's asking such moronic questions?

Posted by: scotevan | January 15, 2008 10:00 PM

Race based questions shouldn't have been asked.

wink0151:

I believe Hillary and Obama fighting it out tooth and nail -- spending every last dime they have right up until their convention doors open -- helps ALL right-thinking Americans, not just likely voters ; )

Posted by: JakeD | January 15, 2008 9:45 PM

MSNBC should be ashamed of itself. With so many voters still undecided, they are squandering 2 precious hours of prime-time coverage asking the candidates about comments made in the previous debate, comments made by campaign advisors, comments made by other people, and lies circulated in email. How about an issue, MSNBC? Like, I don't know, how you plan to get out of Iraq, or address the housing crisis? If I were there, I'd be heckling, too!

Posted by: twatson12 | January 15, 2008 9:45 PM

The first four questions were awful. How is this supposed to help voters?

"Race Returns as Topic in Nevada Debate"

Mr Slevin, and his headline writer, labor mightily to lead their readers to believe the candidates are responsible for the topic's introduction. "Race Returns", cute, it's as though it showed up all by itself. I, for one, am very curious why the apparently newsworthy behavior of the debate's moderators doesn't appear in its central role of the story.
