Reenergized Clinton Talks Poverty and Healthcare

Updated 9:11 a.m.
By Anne E. Kornblut
HANGING ROCK, Ohio -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in an emotional townhall with working mothers here on Thursday, said that her rival only wanted to provide health insurance to the women's children -- not the women themselves.

"He has a mandate to cover children; he does not have any requirement for adults," Clinton said afterwards at a news conference with reporters.

It was a sharp dig from Clinton just as her campaign was hoping to turn a corner heading into the March 4 contests here and in Texas. Clinton seemed, for the first time in days, to show new life. Fresh off the news that her campaign had raised $35 million in the last month, Clinton said the fundraising "says a lot" about the condition of her campaign. "Contributions are another way of judging" how much support a candidate has, Clinton said. "When people found out we didn't have the resources to compete, and I did put my own money in, it just set off a chain reaction across the country."

In the midst of a strong thematic push leading up to March 4, Clinton wound her way through the Appalachian edge of Ohio to talk about poverty and the economy -- and to demonstrate her gentler side, which was a factor in helping her win her last surprise victory, in New Hampshire on Jan. 8.

At the townhall in Hanging Rock, Clinton listened as downtrodden voters described their hardships. She introduced two women, a single, 21-year-old mother and an older mother of four, as examples of who would benefit from expanding childcare and healthcare programs. It was part of a forceful, if potentially belated, drive to demonstrate that she was far from pulling out of the contest that included not only the fundraising announcement but also proclamations by the campaign that organizations are up and running in Pennsylvania and Wyoming, which have contests in the weeks ahead.

Her events have been downscaled in recent days, taking place in smaller rooms, with limited and sometimes invitation-only crowds that paled in comparison to the massive mobs that Obama was bringing out to stadium-sized venues. But her campaign advisers said it was by design, giving Clinton a chance to look more personable and connect with people. And she did appear at ease, well within her comfort zone of discussing policies and other people's problems -- rather than her struggling campaign.

At her news conference, Clinton declined to criticize the media coverage of her campaign as she and her advisers have done repeatedly in the past. "I'm going to leave that to you, that's your job," she said, asked what, exactly, she felt the media had failed to ask about Obama. "I'm just saying that I'm running my campaign and that's all I can do; that's all I have any control over."

Late Thursday, Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor reacted to news of Clinton's critique of Obama's health coverage plan. "Senator Clinton knows that anyone who wants health care under Senator Obama's plan will have it, and that his plan does more to cut costs than any other that's been proposed, " he said. "President Clinton's former Secretary of Labor even said that his plan would cover more people than hers. The difference between the two plans is that Senator Clinton would force even those who can't afford health insurance to buy it."

vince foster (google) ron brown(google ) Marian wright edelman ( google) find out what hillary's friend thinks about " work for the poor". the message changes to fit the venue . i dont really think about the poor too much because the goverment still taxes as if i am a part of that bracket that makes big money . just research and find out how hillary's 35 years of experience has followed her . she says the experience is there so investigate . just dont forget " senator goldwater or her involvemnet with the black panther movement. don'nt you think the same way we can look on the internent and find information so can the obama campaign , there is a wealth of information the republicans can use . but" obama" continues to take the high road even when he was not the front runner . everything she says she believes in can be researched,. she is definitely "vetted" but for all the wrong reasons. they all lie in campaign speeches to get the
vote , but to have to listen to her use her candidancy and repay whatever the clintons failed to finish in their administration is just to much to bear. politics is a business , maybe not having to much so called experience in washington isnt a bad thing . only then can the candidate can concentrate on real 'change" w/o the baggage

The so-called "progressives" are as nutty as the "right wingers". They talk unity but are the first to burn other democrats.
Obama is turing out to be his own worst nightmare because of the nuts he attracts.

Forgive me, at the end of my last post I meant to say that their attempts to differentiate Callejo and Farrakhan do NOT hold water.

Barack H. Obama will be worst President America could have.... If he wins... Sh*t will hit America BIG TIME...

I'm a Rep. Go McCain...!!

Before going forward with this post, I must admit that I have not read every single post thus far so please forgive me if someone raised this issue already.

Over the past few days in the Dallas area there has been a dust-up that the MSM (the same one Clinton supporters say is so anti-Hillary) has neglected covering. Adelfa Callejo, an 84 year-old Hispanic activist and Clinto supporter, claimed the Obama's problem was that he was black. To read some coverage of it please click on the following link (http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/02/_she_was_asked_by.php).

When Sen. Clinton was confronted on the issue in a TV interview and asked whether she rejected and denounced this woman's comments, she stated the Callejo was entitled to her opinion. The hipocrisy of this is too much! When she made an issue of the Farrakhan denouncement, Obama rejected and denounced him. Now that she's in a battle for TX and faces a similar dilemma, she sidesteps the issue and says that this woman is entitled to her opinion. Before anyone tries to claim that Farrakhan has a higher profile among the black community, let me tell you that, as a black man, I can assure you that most black people don't pay attention to him.

Callejo is a respected community activist in the Dallas area and is regarded as an influential person. The fact that the Clinton campaign released a statement after the fact, is sad. They haver reached a level of desparation that is pitiful. To borrow a line from Sen. Clinton, "SHAME ON YOU" Sen. Clinton! When the time came for you to practice what you preached you hedged for fear of losing some support among Hispanic voters. Additionally, "SHAME ON YOU" MSM! Maybe you've been guilted by the Clinton campaign about coverage bias but to not cover this story is completely wrong!

I can't wait to see the torrent of posts from Clinton supporters trying to differentiate this woman from Farrakhan. Let me save you some time, your explanations do hold water!!!!!

YOU MIGHT BE AN IDIOT:-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

I'm confused. How is Hillary Clinton destroying the Democratic party? I could understand this claim if she was continuing to run with no support. But she has won almost as many delegates as Obama (a 90-delegate difference when both have more than 1,000 delegates is a pretty narrow margin mathematically).

Yes, she has lost 11 elections straight. Even I understand that this is significant. But as we have seen in past elections, it's not the number of states you win; it's the number of delegates. And the big numbers come from winning certain key states: California, Florida, New York, Ohio, Texas. Hillary Clinton has won three of these five big states already. She's polling strongly in Ohio and keeping her footing in Texas.

I support Hillary Clinton, and I would feel incredibly betrayed if she dropped out of a campaign that has remained this close for this long. She obviously continues to appeal to a large constituency; suggesting that she should drop out indicates a wish to suppress the voice of that constituency. That seems more destructive to the Democratic party than anything.

MsRita,

Your whole family changed their minds over a cheesy TV ad? Your vote. Your right. I support you.

LMAO! Hillary has a new ad that state "It's 3:00 in the moring the phone rings...Who would you want to answer the phone" Her face come up with full make-up and bright lip stick.

This women has Multiple Personailty Disorder and I wont vote for her unless she runs for VP.

My brother from Texas called and said you are right me and my wife and kids and dad have changed our minds behind this ad. LMAO! Why fearmongering.

I'm so happy because I have been calling them in Texas trying to change their minds now she did herself.

Change we can believe in? A new kind of politics? Someone who will bring us together? I don't think so.

Response to "gandalf"--

For some reason, Hillary's vote bothers Obama, but he is not bothered by the "yea" votes of Kerry, Daschle, Dorgan, and Dodd. I can't figure that out.

For all of the voters that have been won over by Obama's "opposition" to war, I support that fully. I attended peace rallies before the resolution too, but...

From the Boston Globe, March 22, 2007:

"Obama has also said repeatedly that while he would have voted against the war in 2002 based on what he knew at the time, he could not be sure that classified intelligence reporters made available to senators wouldn't have changed his mind."

I'm a little confused by this argument; how is the daughter of an Ill. drapery seller and grandaughter of a factory worker, and her spouse, a son from Arkansas with no family connections (Bill), "the dynasty," and not, rather, the candidate that the Kennedys and Kerrys tell us that we should elect?

Influenced by the paragon of truth and virtue to whom she is married, Hillary stepped across the line of good judgment and common sense and has suffered a wound fatal to her Presidential aspirations over five years ago.

Why? How?

Hillary Clinton's vote aided and abetted George W. Bush in his frontal assault on the U.S. Constitution when she agreed to authorize him to invade Iraq.

"Our Constitution expressly PROHIBITS an unprovoked and pre-emptive war against any nation in the world. It also prohibits the Congress from delegating the authority to declare a war to the President of the United States. This is one of the major pillars of the separation of powers."

Senator Clinton voted to give President Bush the authority to go to war - AFTER - she discussed with senior Democratic colleagues the likelihood that he would take the authorization and use it to cover an invasion.

Since then, in increasingly clumsy attempts to re-write history, she claims that all she did was to authorize an invasion if all other diplomatic negotiations failed. In this explanation she is once again standing with her finger in the wind trying to position herself for a general election.

Better that she stands for her vote - or admits she was wrong - but again, in the televised L.A. debate, she refused once more to choose on which side of the issue she stands....

She spent over 6 minutes in that debate flip-flopping around on stage in embarrassing fashion simply trying to explain HER war authorization vote. She never did. Finally the moderator had to ask was she "duped by the dope." No, she said, adamantly.

Okay, then WHY did she vote FOR the WAR?

She knew the Democrats would not carry the issue...and a No vote would have cemented her in opposition to the stupid war. It would not have affected the vote outcome. More significantly, Hillary's N.Y. Democratic constituents would have cheered a NO vote!

So,.........Why did she vote YES????

Why did she vote to join with the Republicans and give to George Bush the authority to take this country into a pre-emptive war that has killed and maimed tens of thousands of American soldiers, marines, airmen and sailors?

She brags about her support of children...what about our sons and daughters in uniform? And grandchildren?

Hillary voted to authorize the war in Iraq because she did not want to poison the well from which she thought (way back in 2002) she would have to drink when going up against a Republican in 2008.

She voted "YES" to insulate herself from Republican attack.

In other words,

...she took a position with an eye on HER future - NOT the future of the United States that she now claims as her vision.

She did not think the issue through. Just like George Bush. Ready - FIRE - aim.

Hillary Clinton took her stance on the War with her eye on her political career. There is no other explanation for her vote - unless she actually supported the war and is now ducking that conviction.

Either way - she comes off looking like a cheap politician parsing her answers so as to deflect the truth. But again, remember who she learned from -- she was trained by Bill.

Hillary is guilty of political posturing for the worst possible reason - her own career. The Republicans have their knives and spears sharpened and ready for the thrust.

McCain will simply say, "But Hillary - YOU voted FOR the WAR." "You used your experience and JUDGMENT and voted YES for the language of the bill....

Hillary's experience and judgment failed her in 2002, just as it is failing her now in 2008 in the woefully inept management of her own campaign.

HILLARY CLINTON MUST BE DENIED THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION.

This is an interesting idea, especially if her primary #s remain substantially higher than the Republican nominee, and if this campaign illustrates that the divides in the Democratic party are all too easily exploited. The diversity of the democratic party used to be its greatest strength.

I just read the article and I can't understand how you conclude Michelle Obama is a racist.

It was 1985 and a very very very very different United States. She was a young black woman in a predominately white college and society. This was the same year, I would remind everyone, where Cosby premiered. It was an important shift in racial identity in this country and her thesis illustrates a young woman of color who is attempting to find her voice and place in this changing society. It shows a woman who is balanced in her viewpoint. There's nothing racists or remotely wrong in this, and it appears as if Politico was trying to make a big deal aobut Princeton refusing to release it, yet they got it with just asking the Obama campaign. Maybe that's the lesson. You ask the candidates something directly from Obama you get answers from Clinton you get excuses (tax returns, papers in white house, the list goes on). Nothing here. More Politico straw grasping and no-nothing story to scare away the fringe white vote who might take this to be some kind of, I don't know what, at times all this gets exhausting.

National polls of Democrats and Republicans consistently give Obama a better chance of beating McCain than the Clintons beating McCain. This statistic belies the logic of several of the contorted pro-Clinton arguments that appear above.

Face it, the typical pro-Clinton supporter is a modern version of a royalist, spouting reasons to secure succession for the next family member waiting in line for the throne.

Both Obama and Clinton had their healthcare plans reviewed independently. Clintons would cost $140 billion and cover everyone, Obama's would cost $110 billion and cover half the uninsured. Obama's plan is also considered less realistic for making it optional to sign into, most think this will doom it if implemented. Two articles that should be mandatory reading for all Obamanistas are "How Barack Obama Played the Race Card and Blamed Hillary Clinton" (www.tnr.com); and "Bamboozling the American Electorate Again" (www.thecityedition.com). They lay it all out for those that really want to understand what is happening. These articles are also reinforced by an Op-Ed piece that Geraldine Ferraro did in the NY Times regarding the percentage of "rank and file Democrats" that are actually voting in the primaries (maximum is 30%). Many of the "white man votes" counted for Obama have been cast by Republican men. It is too bad that the Left wing of the Democratic Party will not wake up and smell the Rovian coffee. Blinded by the Left. The Republicans (Brit Hume, Bill Kristol) want Obama to get the nomination. You think there is a reason for that? You can bet the White House there is. The Clintons have beat the right wing before, convincingly. Hillary will be a much more difficult opponent in the general election. One fact in these articles is very interesting: "Republicans for Obama" formed in 2006 to expedite the strategy of Republicans switching parties to vote in the Democratic primaries. In addition: Three former fundraisers for President Bush contributed heavily to Obama to begin his campaign (receipts topping 100 million). Interesting, isn't it? If the Democrats want the White House, Clinton is the only one who can win. Otherwise, think 1972 and four more years of Republican rule.

You do sound reasonable. Here is the problem - we are nominating the most liberal and lest exp. person in the main stream democratic field. Oh yes he is kind of black and was schooled in Islam at a young age (I don't care but ... think)After Iowa teen fun turned into a cult. He also runs on what I like to call 'big lies' - that is things the shift reality not just the normal 'who me' political BS. The 60 senator landslide was a good one. Look how nice I am. He also plays the women B card like no other.

I think I can speak for most of the upset HRC people in saying we would not not feel like this if say Gore (who may have run) or Richerdson made the cut. I don't know how most HRC people feel now but I feel sick.

Democrats have to really really think about what they are doing. How does this selection speak the the future. If this is the wave of the future or present then god help us. I don't know what happened but it feels like Iraq all over - 40 percent are like 'don't do this' and the other 50 percent are going along with some BS. I don't feel like doing more 'I told you so'.(Hillary did not start the war and Obama never did a thing to stop it)

Do you remember Words of Mass Deception (WMD). That is Obama in 08.

Posted by: niksiz | February 29, 2008 5:07 AM

I am looking forward to an exciting and energetic presidential race between Obama and McCain, one which has more sincerity than the Obama-Clinton race. I think both Obama and McCain would be a breath of fresh air after the Clinton-Bush years of mistrust, betrayal and disappointment. Keep Bill Clinton's fingers away from the levers of power, or he will be right back on center-stage going after his old enemies and trying to fix every little thing he wished he did differently between 1992-2000. Obama has a lot of support from Democratic senators and members of congress - they don't want the Clintons back either.

And Republicans should not worry if Obama becomes president and then proposes something radical that the people are opposed to. Remember when the Clintons proposed nationalizing health care in 92-94 - a "mediocre-care for all" plan like there is many European countries? That ushered in the Republican revolution in the house and senate, one of the great Republican victories in the last 50 years.

So the new Clinton Campaign strategy is emerging even further. Have smaller ("more intimate") crowds that can be controlled or hand picked ("by invitation only"). Let's cater to a specific group of voters (women only) just as they have catered to a select group of states (those with larger numbers of delegates and favorable Clinton demographics). Change tactics for who knows how many times already and show the softer side of Hillary Clinton (which worked very well for her back in New Hampshire when she cried for that intimate, ladies only gathering) rather than repeating her performance of less than a week ago when she was practically foaming at the mouth in one case and then in another, decided to take a particularly nasty mocking tone. Top it off by telling lies about her own positions or her opponents' (mix that up a little to keep the campaign interesting. After ranting and raving about Senator Obama misleading voters about her position on health care when he pointed out that Hillary's Health Care program would force Americans to buy it, Hillary now decides to trumpet her program as superior because she would mandate (force) everyone to have it. Yeah - THIS sounds like a winning strategy to me!

Posted by: diksagev | February 29, 2008 3:05 AM

"He has a mandate to cover children; he does not have any requirement for adults," Clinton said afterwards at a news conference with reporters.

Can anyone really be uninformed enough to miss the amazing hypocracy of Hillary Clinton. Less than a week ago, she was screaming and raving about the "unfair tactics" of the Obama Campaign with the mailers that pointed out that Hillary's Health Care Plan would "force" everyone to enroll in her program. She was yelling that "ALL DEMOCRATS SHOULD BE OUTRAGED" and urging Senator Obama to campaign in a manner that lived up to his lofty rhetoric. Now here she is, approximately 5 days later, trying to make her Health Care Plan sound better precisely because she would make it mandatory for all Americans (force them to sign on) and Senator Obama would not! Hillary was right. ALL DEMOCRATS SHOULD BE OUTRAGED! SHAME ON YOU SENATOR CLINTON! Apparently Hillary wants to have her cake and eat it too.

Posted by: diksagev | February 29, 2008 2:44 AM

Hillary Huckabee - that says it all.

Posted by: AnninSeattle | February 29, 2008 2:41 AM

"HANGING ROCK, Ohio -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in an emotional townhall with working mothers here on Thursday, said that her rival only wanted to provide health insurance to the women's children -- not the women themselves."

This is the perfect example of the kind of lies that come out of Hillary Clinton's mouth almost every time she speaks. She is telling these women a blatant lie when she tells them that Barack Obama does not want to provide health care to these women -- only to their children. The truth that anyone who has been paying the least bit of attention to this campaign should know all to well by now is that Senator Obama wants to provide health care to these women every bit as much as Hillary Clinton does. The difference is that Senator Obama stresses making that coverage more affordable for them and then giving them the freedom to choose whether they can afford it and Hillary wants to make it mandatory for them, whether they feel they can afford it on their budget or not.

I just saw a headline when I logged onto yahoo that Hillary is counting on women to make her comeback in Texas and Ohio. She holds one of these women only meetings in every state, as pandering to women has been the heart and sould of her campaign from day one. Sadly, Clinton appears to have no respect for the intelligence of "working mothers in Ohio" (or a lot of other women for that matter) or she wouldn't insult them with her lies, expecting them to not know any better.

One of the common understandings I have always heard concerning political campaigns and women voters is that they have a lower tolerance for lies and dirty tactics than their male counterparts. Hillary has either forgotten this, or she is gambling that women are so keen on making history by electing a women -- ANY WOMAN -- that they will be willing to overlook her frequent lies and dirty brand of campaigning in their zeal to see a woman in the Oval Office within the next year. Perhaps this is why her campaign has been losing votes in every state she campaigns in, and specificaly why she has been losing much of the women's vote.

Both the Canadian and Mexican gov'ts are now salivating and rubbing their hands with glee at the possibility of re-negotiating NAFTA. Are both Senators so sure that it is the Canadians and Mexicans that are now shafting the US economy? I thought I had heard something about two costly foreign adventures draining the treasury but maybe I am getting on and missed something somewhere. Canada is totally to blame for the dismal state of the economy in Ohio. Who could have known that they had schemed all along to twist Bill Clinton's signature arm and force it down on that treaty and force us to accept economic humiliation?
On the other hand, if all the talk about re-opening NAFTA is just campaign rhetoric, then shame on them both for their empty Words.

The ways in which the Clinton campaign and her supporters engage in the sublties of racial politics is eye opening. I really think they don't realize that most younger people just don't think that way any more. They are behind the times once again.

The Clintons blame the media for reporting that Hillary lost 11 primaries in row, as if that isn't news. It's funny to watch the intentional distortion and disingenuous attacks.

They really think people are too stupid to recognize their tactics. They are so resistant to learning this lesson, that they continue the vile tactics even though most other reasonable people in the country have.

Keep up the talking points, it only motivates Hillary's supporters. This race is not a level playing field in the media. Hillary symbolizes the double standard in this country. She has to perform better than Obama, and she has.

Obama habit of voting "Present" in Illinois is a way for him to avoid making a choice. He's very manipulative.

Re-energized my foot! We'll see how re-energized she will feel after March 4th. It will be sweet to have Obama trounce her. I am tired, just like most of America too, in the nonsense this family, the Clintons, engages in. It is time to push this family out of the political business.

For those of you Obama supporters who think you are doing your candidate a favor by posting rude comments, you should think again. You are not putting forth his message of hope, change and unity. If he is the nominee, he will need votes from Senator Clinton's supporters. After reading comments some of you have posted, I understand why they may not want to give Obama their vote. Is that really the message you want to convey??

Barack "Ditto" Obama is a lightweight in foreign policy. He basically answers the debate questions through Hillary's responses. He didn't have one hearing on Afghanistan because he was too busy running for President. It is all about him.

Hillary is VERY Cunning!! She gets ALL her supporters to Contribute $35M and then she can end her campaign and pocket the REMAINDER!! She will Make Multi-Millions off the poor suckers who felt sorry for her and she and Bill can stash another $30M in the Caymans!!

Thank you ALL For Your Support and Keep Those Donations COMING!!

You are right. The donations for Hillary are coming from their piggy banks. Except for you, we know Hillary will make a great President. Retired military, many men, women, grandmothers, college students, nurses, professors, etc. we all realize that Hillary is the best candidate.

on 02/28 Jacade writes, "at this point HRC is overplaying her hand. she is being unfair to her supporters by making them stick with the failing campaign longer than they should." How wrong you are Jacade. Her supporters are not sticking with the campaign because they're being forced to. And in fact, should Obama win the nomination, there will be a huge group of disenfranchised Democrats who believe very strongly in Hillary, and who are very disheartened in their fellow Americans for launching such vicious, misogynistic attacks. If Hillary loses, we all lose. If Obama loses, he can come back in 4 years.

She's lost 11 in a row. Obama would have been told to leave the stage immediately. And Hillary woul've been leading the charge. Shame on you Hillary.

There is something called "anti-incumbency factor". Looks like it has smitten the current incumbents and the former ones as well, like a kind of mass contagion. Vote bank politics and mixing/matching, selective innuendos directed at specific cross-sections of society, scoring brownie points, much as may be hoped, only come with quite the opposite effect given time. You can fool some people for all time, all people for some time, but not all people for all time.

Posted by: mdsubramonia | February 28, 2008 10:55 PM

Here's the real worry:

Dems split over online emotional BS; don't come together; and LOSE BIG to McCain -- which means another FOUR LONG YEARS AT LEAST of Republican damage.

Here's where we now stand:

Clinton-lovers are willing to sacrifice a Democrat in the White House if Hillary doesn't win because of the mean, nasty media. Obama-maniacs (and there are some) are willing to slam Clintonites and/or not vote should Hillary get the nomination. Racist nut-jobs are spreading fear and hate online.

If the Democrats don't pull together and realize that this wonderful political energy is quickly turning rancid, and that both Barack and Hillary have extremely similar policies and goals -- and that either would make an excellent leader, WE LOSE.

DON'T BLOW IT. Shut up your hate. Come together and fall in line. That's how the Republicans win again and again and again.

btw - I support Obama, but largely because I know he can get the Independent vote necessary to beat McCain in November. I truly admire and respect Hillary the person (not her campaign) as well, but know she doesn't have the cross-over appeal necessary.

WE NEED A DEMOCRAT IN THE WHITE HOUSE. But only the Dems can blow such an opportunity. It's happening now...

DON'T BLOW IT. Don't lose your temper. THINK.

Again, it's ironic how Obama supporters state that Hillary and her supporters should give up hope.

The last time I was told to be silent on the blogs and step in line for the good of all was just before the Iraq War.

Hillary is the best candidate for the Presidency. She is smart, experienced, and has a handle of the details. She has the experience on the national scene.

We shouldn't trust our leaders completely. There is many a wary eye on Hillary, but not even close to as many a watchful eye on Obama.

Our founding fathers didn't trust powerful politicians, they were suspicious. They set up Congress and the Supreme Court to keep the executive in check.

Obama burst on to the national scene in 04. Just 4 years later, he is running for President. The last time that someone rose to the top so quickly was with George Bush Jr.!., the man we are so eager to replace.

The founding fathers would not be pleased.

The media says Hillary is divisive, but they have not offered any facts to that Congress would be blatently be opposed to her. There have been no mass declarations from Congressman or Senate memebers that if she reached across the aisle, they would not at least take her hand and talk.

The press's evidence of her divisiveness in Congress is about as much as they gave us for evidence of Saddam's WMD.

The Press, in their loathing for Hillary, has steadily fed the public a diet of Barack's inevitability, and Hillary's demise.

The same press that brought us....the Iraq War.

Having read Ms Obama's thesis, I found it to be what one would have expected from a student writing in the 1980's. She used the terms in use in the 1970's and 1980's and her sample population were products of that era. I kept looking for that "black racist" some of these posters kept citing but they must have been reading (assuming they are capable of reading) something or someone else.

The thesis is only 65 pages long and can be found on politico.com for those who want to read it themselves. There is also an excellent article which summarizes the thesis at the same site.

Jason... Hillary's "trickle down" health care concept is a bit too Reaganesque for me. If she is so confidant that we will all be able to afford her insurance, than she needs to be upfront with the costs -- let's hear real dollar numbers. We're talking about dire financial situations for people... struggling to pay utilities, buy groceries, hang onto their homes. Unless her insurance can be guaranteed to be extremely low priced, it is a BURDEN to these families. I will gladly continue paying the absurd price that I do for my insurance (I'm self employed) if it means that I'm not forcing some family to shut off a utility in order to buy Hillary's insurance.

ebubuk2004,

I'm certain you would know about David Duke, but you don't have a clue about Michelle Obama.

I have read her thesis and enjoyed it as the work of a young black woman grappling with questions of race and belonging in a predominantly white world. The fact that her major was Sociology puts the thesis even more in perspective. Her methodology was impressive and based on sound survey methods.

As a middle-aged white Midwesterner, I can't say I was disturbed or found any trace of racism in her work. I did find a strong and compassionate intellect striving to be honest.

More of the race-baiting, eh, bubu? Your rants are becoming predictable. I can always sum them up in one word:

hate.

Posted by: whatmeregister | February 28, 2008 10:08 PM

I do not think that the Obama thesis is racist, at least from the description here. It's academic and provocative. I say this as a Hillary supporter. It needs to be recognized that Hillary Clinton is running FOR herself, not against Obama, and particularly not Mrs Obama. It would help her if her supporters understood this subtlety.

Posted by: abirla | February 28, 2008 10:05 PM

As an ardent Clinton supporter, I am sad to say but it is all over; HRC is keeping up the energy, but it won't matter much. The media has ganged up against her, and the American voter is not smart enough to discern the truth for him/herself - atleast enough of the democrats are, enough to make Obama the nominee.

But at the same time, the dirty tactics of Obama campaign and the hate filled venom of pimps like Robinson, Rich and Dowd, has turned off a substantial number of Clinton supporters, who will sit out or vote McCain or Nader; coupled with the onslaught of predictible swift boating that will come Obama way, he is toast on Nov 5. Not even the pimping of the Colbys and Gersons can save Obama, and we will have 4 more years of Rethugs who will appoint Alito and Thomas clones to the high court, and we can kiss RoEvWade good bye finally, and we can all pack semi automatics with ur kids lunch boxes.

Posted by: intcamd1 | February 28, 2008 10:04 PM

Someone needs to send this piece to Maureen Dowd of the New York Times. Ms Dowd needs to add the "personable Hillary " to her list of the many faces of Hillary which was in her column yesterday. For those who missed it, the item is below.

"...After saying she found her "voice" in New Hampshire, she has turned into Sybil. We've had Experienced Hillary, Soft Hillary, Hard Hillary, Misty Hillary, Sarcastic Hillary, Joined-at-the-Hip-to-Bill Hillary, Her-Own-Person-Who-Just-Happens-to-Be-Married-to-a-Former-President Hillary, It's-My-Turn Hillary, Cuddly Hillary, Let's-Get-Down-in-the-Dirt-and-Fight-Like-Dogs Hillary."

Whats another "face" when Hillary has so many. You just gotta love that woman!!!! She has no shame.

Posted by: NewEra | February 28, 2008 10:04 PM

dogbite,

If we don't mandate health insurance. We will all pay for the people who don't have insurance and the ones the companies reject. If we are all insured, we can drive prices down. I'm on military Tricare and it's cheap!

Jason,

Money is not everything. A lot of negative info is coming out about Barack now that he's actually being scrutinized. Remember Mitt Romney?

Posted by: brigittepj | February 28, 2008 10:02 PM

If Hillary loses the Primary she should run as an independent. Obama already stated he didn't need her supporters. By splitting the vote she may actually win, and then we can all have real change as she will not be tied to any political party.

Posted by: adyp73 | February 28, 2008 10:00 PM

She won't be feeling so great when Sen. Obama releases his fundraising numbers for Feb. He will have raised at least 15 million more. Indeed, the only reason she released her totals today (before Feb even ended) was because she knows Obama's numbers are going to blow her away again.

And, why is she backing off releasing her tax returns? Doesn't she have an accountant who can release her returns?

Posted by: JasonT910 | February 28, 2008 9:55 PM

Bottom line, Hillary... if you MANDATE that people have to buy insurance policies, you are adding to their burden, not helping to relieve it. I still have never heard any actual dollar amount -- just how much will this "affordable" insurance cost the average working mother? I really resent that this woman tries to position herself as "on my side" when she's a corporate tool working to establish a law that all Americans have to buy a product from the insurance industry.

Clinton Compares Obama to a Blank Screen
Email
Share February 28, 2008 8:15 PM

ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: In an interview with ABC's Cynthia McFadden, Sen. Hillary Clinton, when asked about the Barack Obama phenomenon, used a quote from Obama to describe her opponent. "I think the best description actually is in Barack's own book" Clinton said, "where he said that he is a blank screen and people of widely different views project what they want to hear." Clinton continued saying "he just hasn't been around long enough." Clinton continued saying "But with the blank screen it gives you a chance to just really infuse it with whatever you hope for, whatever you want without knowing."

You can watch the entire interview on ABC's "Nightline" airing tonight at 11:35 pm ET.

Clinton was asked her reaction to the many women around this country who say they feel sorry for her. "I think a lot of woman project their own feelings in their lives on to me." Clinton stressed that it is a hard what she is doing but she gets up every day and thinks about what she is going to do - not dwelling on past mistakes, or what will happen if she loses Texas or Ohio.

brigittepj: "Appearing on CNN, one of its pundits, Donna Brazile, hurled the wild charge that Clinton had likened Obama to a child."

Actually, Brazile said quite accurately that Bill Clinton had called Obama a "kid," not a child. And Brazile is not only a CNN pundit, but also one of Bill Clinton's former advisors in his inner circle, so her denunciation carries the extra authority of knowing the man personally.

You can say a lot about the Clintons, but you can never accuse them of racial insensitivity. Nope, they know EXACTLY how their sly remarks will be received by the audiences they're aiming for. And that makes their tactics far worse than if they were just oblivious dullards speaking without thinking.

John Lewis saw through 'em. So did the folks in the last 11 straight contests Hillary lost, including states of all possible racial makeups. God bless every one of them for showing us that America still stands for something.

Act One - The Politics of Hope

Starring: Barack Obama

The Obama campaign's "fairy tale" gambit was particularly transparent. Commenting on Obama's explanation of why he is more against the war in Iraq than Hillary Clinton, and disturbed by the news media's failure to report Obama's actual voting record on Iraq in the Senate, the former president referred to what had become the conventional wisdom as a "fairy tale" concocted by Obama and his supporters. Time to play the race-baiter card! One of Obama's most prominent backers, the mayor of Atlanta, Shirley Franklin, stretched Clinton's remarks and implied that he had called Obama's entire candidacy a fairy tale. (The mayor later coyly told a reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that she had not intended to criticize Clinton: "Surely you don't mean he's the only one who can use the phrase 'fairy tale,'" Franklin said, in a tone that the reporter described as "mock indignation.") Appearing on CNN, one of its pundits, Donna Brazile, hurled the wild charge that Clinton had likened Obama to a child. "And I will tell you," she concluded, "as an African American I find his words and his tone to be very depressing." With those kinds of remarks--"as an African American"--the race card and the race-baiter card both came back into play. Although Brazile is formally not part of Obama's campaign, her comments made their way to the South Carolina memo, offered as evidence that Clinton's comment was racially insensitive.

All of this:
"...emotional townhall ... sharp dig ...hoping to turn a corner ... Clinton seemed, for the first time in days, to show new life...a strong thematic push ... Clinton wound her way ...demonstrate her gentler side...downtrodden voters described their hardships. ...part of a forceful, if potentially belated, drive to demonstrate that she was far from pulling out of the contest ... she did appear at ease, well within her comfort zone of discussing policies and other people's problems -- rather than her struggling campaign..."

is purely the product of Anne's fevered mind and has no place in a professional news story. That last remark is just pure, unadulterated Heather cat. It never ceases to amaze me this garbage is allowed into print on a legitimate news org's web site.

Michelle O's thesis basically says that race has been an issue for her - why else would she want to write a senior thesis on the subject? Hardly the message that her husband hopes to convey who is campaigning on a platform that is supposed to transcend race but in fact has brought it more into focus than ever before.
Read this interesting article from the New Public by (you guessed it) a Professor from Princeton (I tend to agree with him):

Sen. Clinton has lately been comparing her mandate on health care to the Social Security requirement of full participation.

She should get her facts straight before making such a claim.

FDR's original Social Security program was not universal. Many workers could stay out of coverage and avoid payment into the program in the beginning. For instance, self-employed did not have to contribute. The clergy were exempt. Eventually these were brought into the program, but even today, state and local government employees can opt out of social security coverage.

Sen. Obama's proposal to create the program, but let some who are not covered by employers to decline coverage is very similar to the original Social Security provisions.

Of course, both Senator's programs differ from Social Security as they retain private insurance rather than a government run program. If Sen. Clinton really wants to follow the Social Security model, she should propose a single payer system like Medicare for everyone.

Recent polls suggest that Barack Obama is the most radical candidate to have ever hit the modern political stage.

His supporters, Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan, Retired Trinity United Church of Christ Pastor, The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, indicted influence peddler, Antion "Tony" Rezko, Rashid Khalidi, founder of the Arab American Action Network, along with Bernadine Dohrn and William C. Ayers, admitted domestic terrorists and former members of the Weather Underground, quickly united to assure reporters that the polls were unfounded and were probably perpetrated by the Clinton Campaign.

What is that piece of video on Hillary's web site with the late Ann Richards, former governor of Texas? I read in the NY Times that her sons objected to the use of their mother's image without their permission and the Clinton campaign presumed that the late governor would have endorsed Clinton. Typical manipulative Hillary Clinton behavior! Shame on you, Hillary. Wait til the voters meet you at the ballot box and give you a long time out!

at this point HRC is overplaying her hand. she is being unfair to her supporters by making them stick with the failing campaign longer than they should. additionally HRC's camp can dampen enthusiasm among democrats in the general election by stringing this out. the numbers are against her and she cannot win in a fair manner. if her camp does look to rig the outcome (unfairly) millions of americans will unhinge the co-candidacy of HRC and bill. these tactics simply display a need to seek power- but remain unaccountable to the voters, just like bush. americans need to write to their mayors, congressperson and governor to tell them it's time to unite behind obama, because at this point it's clear HRC and bill are incapable of stopping themselves of an endless campaign.

HILLARY CLINTON ROCKS IN HER ROCKING CHAIR.

The other day, a New York Times poll came out that confirmed what Obama's recent wins also show - that Senator Obama is the candidate best suited to win Independents, play well in Red States, and beat John McCain in November. According to the Times, "In the past two months, Senator Barack Obama has built a commanding coalition among Democratic voters, with especially strong support among men, and is now viewed by most Democrats as the candidate best able to defeat Senator John McCain.... Nearly 6 in 10 say he has the best chance of beating Mr. McCain, double the numbers who believed Mrs. Clinton was more electable."

We just LOVE Hillary and cannot wait to vote for her in Ohio next week. We believe she's the most qualified and most electable candidate in the race. Her credentials are second to none. The Dems are so very lucky to have her. Ohio LOVES Hillary and without winning in Ohio, you can't win the Presidency. Hillary has proven she can win big in the big states that are the must wins for the Dems in November.

We thank Hillary Clinton for a lifetime of public service. Hillary will be a GREAT President!

ebubuk2004,

I read the post you linked to, and I can see no possible basis to conclude from it that Michelle Obama is racist. I did, however, come away with even more respect for her as a scholar and an intelligent, questioning woman of substance. It was also useful to be able to download the actual thesis via the article.

I realize that your aim was the opposite of what you achieved, but you have my thanks for that link. It put to rest any doubts I had that Michelle Obama will make a fantastic and accomplished First Lady.

Hillary has lost. Who says she is "re-energized"? Why, she does! Doubtless this catch-phrase is the result of more focus group polling. Words, outfits, lighting, setting, and/or message is not what cost Hillary the nomination, Hillary is.
