Making the Rounds

Obama, Obama, Obama - the Sequel

Updated 6:50 p.m.
By David Montgomery
Barack Obama's campaign is enjoying another hip, tuneful, B-list-celebrity YouTube moment -- this time with an overt appeal to Spanish-speaking voters -- courtesy of musician will.i.am.

The new video, called "We Are the Ones," comes days before the critical Texas primary, where some polls suggest most Latinos favor Hillary Clinton.

The video is based on a line Obama delivered in a speech: "We are the ones we've been waiting for," and it features folks like Jessica Alba, George Lopez, Luis Guzman, Ryan Phillippe, John Leguizamo, Kate del Castillo, Malcolm Jamal Warner and Macy Gray.

Alba, who is pregnant, says in English, "I would like to see, um, a cleaner earth, for my child that I'm bringing into the world very soon."

In Spanish, Lopez says that Obama "represents a change, he represents hope." The Spanish phrases mixed in with English ones include the refrain, "This is our America, my American, your America."

More important than the bold-face names and the spoken words, perhaps, is the vibe: Ambassadors of youthful diversity, carrying themselves with scruffy downtown chic, filmed in black and white. It's just a little jarring, though, when the actors open their mouths and the sound of a crowd chanting "Obama, Obama" seems to come out, as though the individuals had been taken over by the collective.

The work is reminiscent of will.i.am's previous pro-Obama effort, released in early February, "Yes We Can," which had more than 11 million hits on YouTube as of yesterday. Director Jesse Dylan -- Bob's son -- worked on both. The only Spanish in that first work, though, was "Sí se puede."

The battle for the Latino vote has inspired several Spanish language music video tributes to Obama on the Internet, including a reggaeton tune, a corrido and a cumbia.

Not to be outdone, the Clinton campain this week released its own Mexican cumbia, a Latino campaign theme song called "Hillary, Hillary Clinton," and featuring noted Tejano musician Johnny Canales. Latino supporters of Clinton in the Washington area also created a Spanish music video, called "Oye Hillary."

Your ignorance and cretinism are what make people around the world lack so much respect toward americans. You definitely are those people who think that America evolve around a trailer park and foxnews and that is all about guns and NASCAR.
I would suggest you to go back to where you come from.

By the way, Aren`t you supposed to in jail for being sexual predator(inmate 567845)?

I wonder if OMAR Bradley was an unpatriotic Muslim traitor?

Posted by: light_bearer | March 1, 2008 10:39 AM

For anyone who follows that sort of thing:

Is Jessica Alba only a B-list celebrity (even among males age 18 to 25)?

Posted by: JakeD | March 1, 2008 9:50 AM

Of course, flarrfan (I preferred Topps baseball cards myself). I would not vote for Hillary DIANE Clinton in a million years. Don't forget that said "aide" has been alleged to be her lesbian lover too.

Posted by: JakeD | March 1, 2008 9:26 AM

"It's not just that, r.mary65, but Barack HUSSEIN Obama could be a secret Muslim agent"

And what about the personal aide who is constantly at Hillary's side, who reportedly spends more time with her than anyone else? My understanding is said aide was raised as a Muslim and may still be, and that said aide spent formative years in Saudi Arabia, the real home of Wahabism and Islamic fundamentalism, and has unsurpassed access to one of the three remaining serious presidential contenders. Are you concerned about that?

Posted by: flarrfan | March 1, 2008 8:42 AM

To show the media bias and their sleeping on the watch ( no hardcore reporting as in SNL skit) , can someone explain how Michelle Obama's salary at the University of Chicago jumped from $120K to $320K overnight after Obama gets elected to the senate in 2005.

WOW A FRIEND EMAILED ME THIS MORNING TO TELL ME THAT OBAMAS GOOD FIREND(BILL AYERS) DONATED TO HIS CAMPAIGN ALSO, HE WAS ONE OF THE UNDERGROUND WEATHERMAN THAT BOMBED THE NEW YORK CITY POLICE HEADQUARTERS IN THE 70"S WOW REZKO BILL AYERS WHO ELSE IS ON HIS PLY LIST? THIS IS SCARY PEOPLE TO THIS DAY OBAMA IS BUDS WITH HIM. AYERS SAID BACK THEN AND TO THIS DAY THEY SHOULD HAVE BOMBED MORE PLACES THIS IS SCARY. YOU GUYS SHOULD WATCH HANNITY HE FINDS OUT ALOT WE DON'T KNOW ABOUT

I'm not picking sides in terms of whose songs are better, but it is interesting to see what will.i.am and Johnny Canales are doing.

How long has it been since well-known musicians were writing songs supporting presidential candidates? I don't remember it ever happening in my lifetime (since 1976).

Posted by: cakemanjb | March 1, 2008 12:02 AM

I also have not heard the usual stirring "where I was on 911 and what it meant to me" speech from Barak like I have from many. Was he urging caution about war then too? Probably on the fence or we would have heard about it huh?.
In times of crisis to come; I am more sure of an immediate, tough but responsible response from Clinton.
When Bhutto was assassinated I thought Edwards and Clinton showed proactive courage and conviction pressuring to keep the Pakistan elections on schedule. Obama seemed flat footed offering only condolences.
I know what Obama thought about Iraq as a state senator nominee, I do not know how he will respond in many critical times as President

Posted by: CliffinWA | February 29, 2008 11:42 PM

It is like Bush getting the Turkish troops in Iraq crisis right. Proves anyone can get lucky.
I wonder how BO would have reacted.
Seriously, I have noooo idea, and that is my concern.
Maybe I am just mad Obama knew there were no WMD when I was fooled! Were you not fooled by the State of Union Address where Bush said Saddam was trying to buy nuclear material and suggested the possibility of a dirty bomb by Bin Laden? When 900+ bits of information supporting this need for war came slowly out I was fooled, but BO looked into the crystal ball... ooh, the heck with Barak lets elect the crystal ball if we are going to base it on one and only one (not even a vote) dissenting opinion of a STATE legislator.

Posted by: CliffinWA | February 29, 2008 11:18 PM

For Clinton to have the resounding comeback she needs a sea-change must occur. It can only come if voters see Barak is a one-hit-wonder playing the Iraq war tune for more than it is worth and see a surer, steadier hand in Hillary Clinton.

Words take their meaning in part from the context in which they are used. The use of Obama's middle name in certain contexts is an obvious appeal to people's bigotry. I imagine there are contexts in which this would not be the case. It is no use to pretend that the name Hussein is relatively neutral, such as is the case with other middle names cited on this blog. The name is loaded with cultural associations. It's disingenuous to argue otherwise. Or maybe just silly. Obama is not a secret Muslim. He says he's not; the press says he's not (when pressed, even Fox News says he's not). Is it really credible to suggest conspiracy theories about secret brainwashing, Jake? If you care about how others regard your ideas, you need to back away from conspiracy theory talk and fear mongering. Karen9: I assume Mr. Obama has no problem with his middle name, but I doubt he feels very comfortable in an environment where people are using it against him cruelly. It's about context, not about pride in his name. After all, 'Obama' isn't exactly an anglo name, and it sounds like 'Osama.' Obama has made his name into the most popular name in the last 11 primaries. Quiet a feat, I would say. I bet he could have done that with Hussein, if he had wanted to. Guess using one's middle name to run a campaign isn't a likely choice. But let's quit talking about the peripheral stuff and start talking about things that matter, about substance. We need to make our decisions based on Obama's policy statements and our sense of him as a person. Watch him; listen to him; read his books. Then talk.

Wow Barack "Fear Bomb" Obama makes a song out of a line "xeroxed" from a dead woman that I'm sure he never met.

Priceless!!!!

Posted by: brigittepj | February 29, 2008 10:09 PM

Why does Obama distance himself from his middle name? I have never heard of a canidate that is publically ashame of his middle name. That his middle name can not be used unless you are called a racist.

If a man is not proud of who he is then he is not who he says he is. Beware!

Obama was given his ancestral name, Hussein, by his father as a pledge of pride.

It is unbelievable that the potential nominee for the Presidency of the USA is shame of his name and it is politically incorrect to use it.

There is something wrong with this picture. Why is it racist to use his middle name?

If a man fears his own name how can he stand toe to toe with our countries enemies?

How can he face the riggers of the Presidency?

Obama supporter set me straight!

Also from Wikipedia:

As a Navy fighter pilot, McCain flew the A-1 Skyraider (the predecessor to the A-10 Warthog) and the A-4 Skyhawk; he was shot down over Vietnam on October 26, 1967 and remained a POW until March 15, 1973. He was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.

From me:

John SIDNEY McCain -- American Hero.

Posted by: JakeD | February 29, 2008 8:26 PM

observer08:

John SIDNEY McCain went to school as a kid in New London, Connecticut, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and various other stations in the Pacific Ocean; McCain attended whatever naval base school was available -- after World War II was over, the family settled in Northern Virginia, and McCain attended St. Stephen's School in Alexandria, Virginia from 1946 to 1949. Another two years were then spent following his father to various naval stations. In 1951, McCain enrolled at Episcopal High School, back in Alexandria. Altogether, he attended about twenty different schools during his youth.

Please let me know which of these schools you are claiming were "Soviet training schools" (or, are you claiming that about the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland?).

Some of Hillary's goose steppers are in for a real shock. No matter what you type, what she does, what she says, or how badly you want her to win...Hillary will never be president. She has lost, not only 2008, but 2012 and 2016 also. Her campaign was fueled by the false hype that led so many to endorse her prematurely. That will not happen again; next time around she will be meaner than ever, if that's possible.

I guess it's not surprising these days that some Americans are blog-bashing Barack Obama; not for his credibility, his education, years as a State Senator nor even his experience, but the bashing is really about his being. His non-majorityness that is ever present when you involk his full name or see him in person. It's a shame how we as Americans have become so narrow minded we honestly believe these negative images that we are told to see about this man. It doesn't seem to matter what it is, we believe it! Now as of late it seems we have been suckered into believing that anyone with an Arab name is not to be trusted. It appears fear mongering has returned and it is at its peak these days. Moreover, it seems there are some people who will do anything to become president, even attack someone who is honestly trying to make a difference. But I guess it's time for us as a people to return to not using our brains and begin relying on our emotions to lead us into oblivion (again).

I will agree with you that there are no MADRASSAS in Indenosia (sic) -- Indonesia OTOH is the most populous Muslim-majority nation on earth, with almost 86% of Indonesians declared Muslim according to their latest 2000 census -- let me know if you have any other questions.

Flaming is the hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users. Flaming usually occurs in the social context of a discussion board, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or even through e-mail. An Internet user typically generates a flame response to other posts or users posting on a site, and such a response is usually not constructive, does not clarify a discussion, and does not persuade others. - excerpted from Wikipedia

To IVDRAGONLADY: Hillary did not right this song. It was written for her. And if I recall, Obama is copying everything from someone else. Now he has his own song in spanish. Hillary came out with an ad this morning, Obama called it praying on people's fears then used the exact same inference. What is it with this guy doesn't he have anything of his own? Anything original?

The face of American Politics is changing for the better - grassroots involvement and transparency in government. We have Barack Obama to thank for the changes. Thank him for all the new voters joining the democratic party. Thank him for getting the law passed that allows us, the American public, to see where the campaign money is coming from. Thank him for having the ability to lift us up when everyone else wants us to put our heads down and follow along. Thank him for inspiring us to want to be a part of something greater than ourselves. Thank him for taking on the democratic party and the Clinton machine. Thank him for wanting to change the face of Washington. Thank him for wanting to raise our standing in the world to where it belongs - honest and filled with integrity. Thank him for NOT believing in the invasion of Iraq. Thank him for not being one of "them".

Posted by: dwr1979 | February 29, 2008 6:09 PM

you know....these references to Obama being a Muslim is soooo sleezy. That's he not, is not the point.

The point is that you are a f#%cking Nazi...thinking that it would make any difference whatsoever if he were a Muslim.

Try exchanging "Muslim" for "Jew" in your posts, and see how they read exactly as a Nazi screed.

I don't care what your religion is: you're a Nazi!

Posted by: kevinlarmee | February 29, 2008 6:08 PM

JakeD: Your feined ignorance of the reason why emphasizing Barak Obama's middle name fools no one. You are hoping to flame the blantant falsehood that Barak Obama is a muslim. You know that the people of America are prejudice against muslims. Your goal is too transcribe that prejudice onto Mr. Obama. What your doing is disgusting because you are not only knowingly trying to spread misinformation, but at the same time enflame bigotry. You are the lowest form of person and should be ashamed of yourself.

Jake,

The issue is that you seem to be implying that the fact that Obama's name is 'Hussein' has some real meaning. This is a lot like saying that the fact that your middle name is 'Moore' means that you share the ideology of filmmaker/liberal ideologue Michael Moore. While it may be true that you share Moore's political leanings, it is totally reasonable to assume that you do. Meanwhile, we know that Obama does not share Saddam Hussein's political leanings.
