After Officer's Death, Clinton Cancels Event

By Anne E. Kornblut
FORT WORTH -- After a police officer guarding her motorcade died in an accident in Dallas, Sen. Hillary Clinton canceled a rally here, telling hundreds of voters that it would be inappropriate to campaign in light of the event.

"Because of this tragedy, I know you understand ... we can't have a rally," Clinton said.

She began speaking before her traveling entourage even arrived, then quickly said goodbye; Clinton planned to visit the family of the officer instead of holding the event, her aides said.

Several bewildered supporters wandered away from the canceled event asking reporters what had happened.
