NJ: Clinton Wins in Garden State

By Joby Warrick
The Washington Post is projecting that Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY) has won the New Jersey Democratic primary. Clinton survived a late surge by Sen. Barack Obama, who campaigned in the state and nearly erased what had been a commanding lead in the polls for Clinton in the final days before Super Tuesday.

Clinton had been an early favorite to win the state, which lies in her political back yard. She had won the backing of much of the state's Democratic establishment, including Gov. Jon Corzine and Sen. Robert Menendez. Exit polls showed Clinton with an edge among women, older voters and Hispanics, while Obama drew support from an overwhelming majority of African Americans and younger voters.
