Officer Killed Guarding Clinton Motorcade

By Anne E. Kornblut
DALLAS -- A Dallas police officer guarding the Clinton motorcade was killed on Friday morning after getting into an accident just moments before Sen. Hillary Clinton passed by. The accident quickly overtook Clinton's visit here, rerouting news helicopters to the site on the highway where the officer's body lay, and the senator herself canceled a question-and-answer session with reporters in order to make a brief, solemn statement.

She said she was "just heartsick" about the news of the officer's death. The officer lay crumpled, covered in blood, in the street, the crushed motorcycle on the side of the road, as Clinton and her entourage, including the national press corps, passed through. Clinton later called the Dallas police chief. The event "reminds us once again" of the work "men and women in uniform do every single day," Clinton said.
