Clinton's Busy Nights

By Anne E. Kornblut
WESTERVILLE, Ohio, Mar. 2 - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton makes frequent claims about her experience on the campaign trail and on Sunday she offered a new one: that she spent a night sitting in the emergency watching patients come through.

"Go to the emergency room some night. Sit there. I've done this," Clinton said during her stump speech here, when discussing the need for universal health care.

But if Clinton did sit in an emergency room, it was not during the current campaign, or anytime recently, at least not in public view. A Clinton spokesman said she began visiting emergency rooms when she was the first lady of Arkansas more than 15 years ago.

"She started doing it in Arkansas and has been doing it ever since," said Doug Hattaway, a Clinton spokesman. He said Clinton continued to make such visits as a New York senator but couldn't be more specific about the last time she had done so.

Another claim of night activity on Clinton's part is that she worked the night shift. Her Ohio ad, of the same title, says, "She understands. She worked the night shift, too." One campaign explanation for that: Clinton worked the midnight shift washing dishes at a lodge in Alaska in the summer of 1969, when she 21 years old.

No wonder she is so ready to answer the phone at 3 a.m.

I clicked on this article because I thought it might actually be reporting something substantive, accurate, and fair about what Hillary Clinton is doing. Instead it was the same snearing, cynical trivia which elicits more of the same from readers.

Many of you in the news media owe Hillary Clinton hundreds of apologies for nasty, unfounded judgments expressed for years while the Whitewater investigators were trying to find something to accuse her of. Many people were brainwashed by the media and don't really know why they have picked up such cynical contempt for her. They rationalize their cynicism.

You are not doing anyone a service with this shoddy writing.

From the politically immature to the sole moronaderist, alone in the universe, while bo keeps on talking people to death selling his oratorial matresses. All of you guys are on this page, as usual, breathing hard as you speak about your rock star. While as usual, bo is eloquent but inexperience, talkative but result- challenged. "Don't be fooled" he said. Well a lot of us bo, are not fooled by your rethorics. Oh My God, you guys think this whole running of the country thing should be handed to some debutant?! Go ahead, get us further in the hole than we already are by having the inexperienced in the White House. Is he going to get some advisors like Bush did??
I'll tell you one thing though, there are free rides on the likes of CNN and MSNBC for your faux prophet, but there are no free matresses for America!
Hillary 08!!!!!!!!

Sometimes I wonder if the knee-jerk responses here are posted just to get a rise out of someone. Surely one understands that "...she's worked the nightshift too," was meant figuratively, not literally. And as for the comment that she has "body guards" at taxpayer expense, perhaps it would enlighten that person to know that Obama also has Secret Service protection. (all presidential candidates do.) Really folks, if the Obama supporters - who are supposed to be more educated - have this much trouble with reading comprehension, please, don't let them vote...

This kind of stuff is why both Clintons but especially Hillary just make me nauseus. She's trying to be this for one audience, the poor woman in need of care in the ER, and somethong else to a different audience. The fact is she was a child of high wealth, went to an exclusive New England women's college and has never had to worry about where this month's rent or food is going to come from. That's okay. Most politicians are similar. But she needs to stop trying to manipulate people by being something she wasn't and isn't. It worked for Bill, because it was fairly true. He was from a very common beginning. She isn't and this trying to be everything for everybody doesn't appeal to me and I'm sure a lot of others.

I think the only reason she's pulled any substantial support is from women who want to see a female president, regardless of who it is.
The fact is, I don't have even the foggiest notion of what she would really try to do as President that's realistic.

Perhaps I'm cynical, but this whole thread thread seems to have brought out ALL the nastiness of regurgitated right-wing bigot-babble. And now they get THEIR self-righteous knickers in a twist about "plagiarism"?
The monotonous phrases are word-for-word from hateful propaganda spouted by Rove wannabees. They bombard the American public with endless lies, posting the same junk over and over again.

Where's a good verbal sewage treatment plant when one is really needed?!?

Q: Who do you want answering the phone at 3:00 A.M.?
A: Somebody else.
Or ... isn't that the time the Secret Service brings the drunk, staggering & stumbling husband home?

I found her 'working nights' ad the most insulting aspect of her entire campaign. I worked nights for years, as a single parent, trying to stay up after graveyard shift to be with the kids, hoping the kids colds didn't get worse because you did not have money for a doctor visit and gas to get to work, feeling 40 when you are 30 because of sleep deprivation...yeah Hillary you worked nights, just not the kind of night work that thousands of working people in this country endure every single day of their lives.

I can't wait until she is done trying to "connect" with us.

noahkohn-LOL! Glad some people are out there to keep this RAT Honest! ;~)

BTW-I'm Catholic, let me tell you about our "Confession" thingy sometime :-)

She has done everything and has been all things to all people. She has single-handedly brought peace to Ireland, Knows more about the Middle East and everything else that anyone ever did in the history of the galaxies. We speak of her reverently and only in superlatives and they are wholly inadequate to describe the wonder that is she. She is, as they used to describe Barbarossa's grandson Fredrick the second, 'il stupor mundi', the wonder of the world and that, too, is insignificant. If she were Catholic it would be redundant to canonize her for she is a saint, an angel and let's admit it a god: She is the new trinity. Well, she's something alright.

With her new Nuclear ad Hillary is trying to place fear and stamp out our hope. See (link below) what even her own husband, Bill says about such attacks.

More lies. In the Bernstein book her partial summer in Alaska was spent gutting and removing slime from fish. I wonder why when she got so much publicity identifying with and stiffing a waitress she didn't mention being a waitress.
Her campaign geniuses hadn't thought of it then? GO AWAY

Astonishing that "rat-the," or should we just call him Mr. Templeton [maybe he can figure out the literary allusion], would recommend any course of action to Democratic voters given his obvious and long-standing Republic affiliation. [No, I didn't forget the "...an" at the end; I left it off on purpose, just like conservative commentators call it the "Democrat" party, leaving off the "...ic" at the end.] Furthermore, it is indeed very "rat"-like to intentionally distort Mr. Obama's religion, as he is squarely an American Christian. Maybe we should start calling him "snake-the." If he can't figure out the bibilical allusion, I suggest he get his head out of the blogs (as well as certain portions of his anatomy) and go to church.

Are you TIRED of the Political Backstabbing by Billary and Barack Hussein Obasama?

Want an "Old School Democrat"? A man who dedicated his life to trying to help others?

A REAL Fighter who NEVER lets the odds get him down?

Ralph Nader '08! :-)

Make your opinion of Billary and Obasama KNOWN! Do the "RIGHT" thing! ;~)

Geez, does anyone really think any of the candidates are like us working stiffs. Doesn't mean they can't care about us--the Kennedy's have always been the torchbearers for the underprivileged and I don't think many people are saying, "Boy, those Kennedy's are one of us. They know exactly how it feels."

Because of Obama's background, I'm pretty sure he understands what it means to be the underdog. But that shouldn't be the determinant on how to vote. He and Hillary both care about the common man.

Posted by: amaikovich | March 2, 2008 2:24 PM

These feeble efforts to talk down to the common people by false claims "I am one of you" are painful to watch. Everybody knows she flies around in her airplane while Governor Huckabee uses coach. Everybody knows that she is the only one who has a team of body guards at tax payers' expense just because she is Mrs. Clinton. Give me a break!

Of course, Ob and wife understand the "regular" people as well. Don't hear any backlash how they understand the hardships of us "regular folks"....paying 10,000 a year on their girls activities. Yes, they understand. Wife had a $300,000 job in Chicago...yes, they understand.

HRC never said she had hardships like having to pay for an ER visit. She said she just witnessed what goes on and this is why she is so adament for universal health care.

I have never had to work a night shift....has OB or his wife? At least she did once as a young girl.

You guys are so blinded with hate. Republicans are loving this democratic primary. They will laugh all the way to the White House.

Posted by: ca67klein | March 2, 2008 1:56 PM

Kinda creepy. Was this in between eating lots of peppers and washing her hands?

Posted by: scharb | March 2, 2008 1:46 PM

The ad's reference to working the night shift does not apply strictly to Clinton's work in her 20's. It shows her working late at night in an office, and the implication is that she works hard, no matter how late she has to stay up.
She does have the reputation of being a hard-worker and a conscientious and effective Senator.

Posted by: loracc | March 2, 2008 1:35 PM

She is doing her best to fight back and gain support from the younger voters and others she has been losing to Barack. After all, her back is up against the wall...

Typical Clinton spin...she will say anything to get votes....work the night shift? Puhleeze....went to the ER during the night shift....is this woman real? Did she go with her security detail and then create real havoc in a hospital?

She is beyond pathetic.

Posted by: pflegel | March 2, 2008 1:31 PM

Working the night shift at age 21 for a summer job at an Alaskan lodge sure is different than working the night shift in a factory to put food on the table for a family of five. I bet many Ohio night shift factory workers didn't have the luxury of traveling to Alaska when they were 21.

I wish politicians would quit pretending to be like us "regular" people. Clinton's claim to have worked the night shift is insulting to folks who have worked the real night shift for years, not just for an exotic summer trip to Alaska.

Posted by: chrisduckworth | March 2, 2008 1:23 PM

She has NOT done it lately, OR, She would have a real clue as to what would help the Health Care Industry the most.

Your Recipients for your misguided Amnesty have DESTROYED our System Billary!

THEY, Flood our Emergency Rooms, and our Pediatric and Maternity Wards-

And when they don't pay, the Bills get passed on!

Poser! :-(
