A $55 Million Month for Obama

Updated 3:43 p.m.
By Matthew Mosk
Sen. Barack Obama continues to rewrite the book on presidential fundraising.

Today his campaign announced he raised $55 million in February from more than 700,000 contributors. That surpasses the $44 million haul Sen. John F. Kerry brought in after securing the Democratic nomination in March of 2004. All but $1 million of Obama's money was for use in the primary.

But the way Obama raised the money -- largely through small contributions that flowed in over the Internet at a pace of nearly $2 million-a-day -- represents the new model for presidential fundraising in America. Obama's campaign reported today that $45 million of that total came in from online donors.

Clinton appears to have caught the same wave, raising $35 million in February, most of it online. But as he did in January, Obama managed to keep one step ahead of her on the fundraising front. The money allowed him to vastly outspend Clinton in the closing weeks of the March 4 contests, putting about twice as much money into television advertising in Texas and Ohio.

The Obama campaign said the added value of this brand of fundraising has been its ability to convert online interest into not only money but also volunteer time. "More than a third of those new online donors in February went on to engage in volunteer activity," a campaign press release said. That included planning their own offline events, making phone calls from home, and joining local grassroots volunteer groups.

Are churches or other 501(c)(3) organizations playing any roll in the solicitation, collection or distribution of the contributions to either Obama or Clinton? HMM.

I hope the Dem delegates, super delegates & DNC power brokers set down and add up the electoral votes of each of the states and what candidate probably take the electors in Nov. against a Republican. Some states such as MASS will go Dem even if Ted Kennedy is on the ticket. Is it thought that MS, WY, SC, NC, UT, etc will go Dem? Not likely, even if Apostle Paul is on the ticket. Sober up folks. Who can win the electors to nail the presidential election? The Democrats are handed a great opportunity here. Pray that we don't toss it away.

"Hillary is going to be an incredible President. Brilliant, informed, articulate and capable. Honest and a life full of integrity. Change and leadership you can trust."

Thinker, you had me there, until that honest and full of integrity thing. Hillary has just as much honesty and integrity as your average long-term Washington politician. Namely, more than, say, Chaney or DeLay, but less than Obama or your average corporate executive. Not to say Obama is totally honest or integrity-laden, he just hasn't yet had the time in DC to become completely sullied.

Has anyone asked or investigated whether all these small online donations to both candidates are, in fact, coming from small donors? Considering how easy it is to automate things with e-mail and the net (think spam), who's to say that enormous chunks of these 40-50+ millions raised are not, in fact, coming from a handful of wealthy donors looking to sidestep federal campaign rules? How hard would it really be for, say, the owner of a large bank to set up 100,000 dummy accounts under false names, and have each transfer $100 to their candidate of choice, all without having to reveal his involvement? I am in no way saying this HAS been done, I just want to know if anyone is considering and preventing such an action.

I'd also like an investigation (with teeth, preferably) to check out how well (if at all) the security loopholes and irregularities with automated voting machines have been fixed in the last 4 years. From what I read before, during, and after the 2004 elections the devices made by Diebold et al were fatally flawed, insecure, and totally opaque with no oversight of their coding or operation, and no reliable second-checking mechanism. Why are we trusting our future to these companies?

GAME OVER.

If you can't win in Ohio, you can't win the Presidency.

Obama outspent Hillary by 3 to 1 in Ohio, yet he won only FIVE out of 88 counties. Ouch. The five counties Obama won are the areas with high black voting blocks, the only group of voters that Obama won.

Obama is unelectable. It's that simple.

Barak Obama's Accomplishments:

1. Bought a cheap house with free garden, saved 300k.
2. Successfully delayed 15 parking tickets for over 20 years (think how much gain he could have made investing it)
3. Invented a way to vote on tough issues without jeopardize his political future (voting present, he should patent it)
4. Secured most campaign funding among all candidates from big insurance co.
5. Successfully (for a while) fooled US voters on NAFTA rhetoric.
6. Made people faint in rallies. (repeatable results)
7. Made his wife feel proud of US for the first time.
8. Successfully held on to the subcommittee chair position for over a year without holding any hearings.

Your blatant discrimination along with your other racist partners is showing full force. You're just like a cocker roach that runs and scatter when the lights are turned on! You don't have the heart to crawl around while the lights are own, so you hide your racist and biggots beliefs in the closet. It certainly shows your cowardness. If you read you'll see that Obama's supporters are not only 95% of the black voters, but also 52% of white educated, intelligent $$$ males (not the redneck, uneducated, broke rural men who would never vote for a black man because of their hatred, fear and jealousy), young and vibrant college educated folks-both black and white, white women who make $50,000 or more and educated, and more. So your comment reaks of ignorance and stupidity just like your character..Get out the gutter with your candidate!

Have any of Hillary's Democratic opponents, including Obama, sought more detailed answers from her about stories such as:
• Norman Hsu and his bundling of money for her campaign?
• How "dishwashers, waiters and others" poured "$1,000 and $2,000 contributions into Clinton's campaign treasury?"
• Bill's trip to Kazakhstan with Canadian magnate, Frank Giustra, that netted Giustra $3 billion and Bill's foundation a $131 million contribution from Giustra?
• How powerful foreign donors to Bill's presidential library, such as the Saudis, may pose a serious conflict of interest to Hillary's foreign policy actions as president?
• How Bill's tangled ties to an investment concern of Clinton friend, Ron Burkle, and it's dealings with Dubai may yet, again, threaten to compromise Hillary Clinton's execution of foreign policy as president?
• The fact that with all of these questionable financial dealings, the Clintons have been unwilling to release their tax returns, especially in light of Hillary Clinton claiming that the $5 million she lent the campaign was "her own money?"
• And, finally, though we, as Democrats, don't care who Bill schtupps (and, no, none of us believe he has kept his fly zipped the last seven years), you can be damn sure the Republicans will be digging hard (no pun intended) to see just what Bill has been up to since leaving office.

So has Hillary really been vetted? Shouldn't she be fully vetted on these stories and others for no other reason than as a public service to the Democratic Party? (The same logic Camp Clinton continually throws out for its "vetting" of Obama.)
Shouldn't the press be asking her about these stories and their potential impact on the race, should she garner the nomination? Shouldn't Democratic superdelegates take into account these items that may present themselves in "full bloom" during a race versus John McCain in the Fall?
Is $150,000 (since returned) from Tony Rezko more important than hundreds of millions of dollars in secret transactions?
I think for the sake of the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton needs to be fully vetted.
I am sorry. I am not taking her or her surrogates at their word that there are "no surprises" and that she has been "fully vetted."
The facts are, she has not. Certainly not to the extent she will be on these stories -- and more -- in a general election versus John McCain.
Let the "vetting" begin.

For me the kicker is Clinton's campaign comparing Obama to Ken Starr (the Whitewater special prosecutor) for just suggesting that she release her tax returns. My goodness. There must be something hiding in there for her to go so ballistic over the suggestion that she release her tax returns. Could it be Bills money connection to Ron Burkle or perhaps Frank Giustra and the Khazakstan deal. Don't you think we have a right to find out just what is or is not hiding there before the party nominates her? We don't want a scandal in October just in time for the general election. She went on and on about the press not vetting Obama, well now she should step up and get her tax returns out there, plus all those tens of millions of dollars to Bill's Library that came from places like Saudi Arabia.

You guys seen the photo of Hillary and Bill with Rezko? How about the multiple reports today about the Clinton camp giving the "wink-wink" to the Canadian Embassy NAFTA about the same time Obama did.

What is worse, Obama being involved with Rezko and tipping off Canada, or Clinton jumping all over Obama for what he was doing while doing the exact same thing?

Could you Rezko folks actually post a single item that Obama has done with or for Rezko that has been deemed illegal? or required censure? have you seen the statement by the seller of the house that there was nothing funny about the deal? Do you know that there were three back and forth offers before the Obamas and the seller agreed on the price of the house?

Now let's get on to Hillary and Bill and THEIR Rezko... Marc and Denise Rich. Was Clinton censured for his pardon of Marc Rich? Did Denise Rich give heavily to the Clinton library? How much money were Hillary's brothers paid by people that then received pardons from Bill?

See, some people actually do research to get FACTS. Rather than just use innuendo, I prefer to get corroboration before posting dirt on people.

Has anyone else noticed how Obama always looks down when he's thinking and answering questions? Does anyone know about investigations training and how guilty people have body languages and act and ... look down and up alot ... avoid the eyes of the person they are talking to when they are covering things up? They are busy thinking up the story. Busy being careful. He isn't very fluent in Rezko questionings - he's pretty darn careful and then... he changes the subject and make it what he wants to talk about. Such a politician. And who knows what else.

Hillary is going to be an incredible President. Brilliant, informed, articulate and capable. Honest and a life full of integrity. Change and leadership you can trust.

The Clintons are an embarrassment.

Shouldn't Democrats have a presidential candidate they can be proud of ... like we were in the past, before Bill Clinton?

Integrity, honor and accountability should not be rare in politics; we need to strive to make them the minimum price of admission, if we are to move our country forward.

Integrity, honor and accountability are just what the Clintons have not provided, and will never provide.

Robert F. Kennedy said politics was an honorable adventure.

It can be again.

Here is about the best news item you can find on YouTube regarding Obama in Chicago with Rezko. Notice how he does not answer and avoids answering - SAME AS HE DOES TODAY. Brief little answer, just believe me and leave it at that. This man "dismisses" the media and the questions he is being asked during this interview By The People. He is smug to think he can have this job without answering. Here is the Chicago news piece. He hasn't changed. Thinks he can just tell you all to go away. Don't we have that now - aren't we just getting rid of this? He has alot of nerve. And the Republicans have this new piece, so it isn't Hillary or Democrats beating up on the little kid. This is his life, his choices, his bad judgment - he can't seem to take responsibility for anything or to answer FULLY. Bad new. Someone tell him he can go home now. To his 1.6 million dollar house while eleven buildings in his neighborhood were run by this slum lord. Why didn't he know about them? What was he doing? Just taking his paycheck? How did he afford a 1.6 million dollar house?

I'm amazed how often these comments sections are used for everything but commenting on the story. Instead of slinging insults at each other, how about considering the following:

1. The democratizing effect the internet has on political fundraising. People being worked to death, with no spare time to speak of, can now essentially go to www.mycandidatesname.com, click the big "Donate" button on the home page, and send off the money in less time than it would take to find an envelope. A greater correlation between popular support and funds appears. Politicians spend slightly less time calling fat cats for contributions and more time serving the people, who are now also contributors. Influence is spread out.

2. Little, if any, time has been devoted to the effect this flood of money has on the media market. As with any commodity, when there's more money available to buy it, the price goes up. What's the role of the advertising companies and the media who sell the time or space to display the ads in inflating the cost of running for office? If the price goes up sufficiently, does all this vox populi cash just put us back where we started, forcing candidates to go hat in hand again to the corporations? Should public good trump free market principles and a fee cap for these services be put in place? Is a company's bottom line worth the increased risk of corruption that comes with money in politics?

It'd be worth seeing a discussion on this instead of the usual slander, insults and flying spittle that usually takes place here.

Remind me again how much he outspent Clinton in Texas and Ohio. It's time for the Obamaphiles to realize that the most important factor in running for the presidency is your qualifications. Obama is qualified as a gifted motivational speaker who can turn a poltical rally into a revival meeting. But that's about it. The job of the presidency of the US requires quite a bit more.

If the superdelegates look at message boards like these ones, they'll see that Obama supporters more often than not act like immature jerks making personal attacks at anyone who doubts their saviour's divinity, rather than discussing the issues.

The final reason is that Obama's supporters will drop him like a rock once it dawns on them that he's not the saviour they think he is, but just another politician who tells one thing about an issue to one group and the opposite to another.

Great site with information regarding Obambi and Rezko. Obama is a consummate politician. Eleven years in Chicago politics ISN'T NEW AND DIFFERENT!!

He "distanced" himself from his pastor and "spiritual" adviser Rev. Wright because he's a religious nut who supports Farrakhan, and he has "distanced" himself only since the criminal charges from Tony Rezko - his "material" and "monetary" adviser and donor. $189,000 worth of Rezko money to his campaigns. Mr. Obama knows money, and politics and schmoooze. He prides his smug self in it. Fools.

Here is a site to see: http://rezkowatch.blogspot.com/2008/02/how-close-were-barack-obama-and-tony.html

Excerpt:

Rezko, after all, built part of his fortune by exploiting the black community that Obama had served in the state Senate, and by milking government programs meant to benefit black-owned businesses. But Obama took Rezko's money even after the businessman was sued by the city of Chicago for failing to heat his low-income apartments, and even after Rezko was caught using a black business partner to obtain a minority set-aside for a fast-food franchise at O'Hare Airport. ...

Citizenship is a responsibility, not a right. Be informed. Get informed.

Herald & Review, Sept. 9, 2004:
Obama said the United States benefits enormously from exports under the WTO and NAFTA. [Obama] said, at the same time, there must be recognition that the global economy has shifted, and that the United States is no longer the dominant economy.
"We have competition in world trade," Obama said. "When China devalues its currency 40 percent, we need to bring a complaint before the WTO just as other nations complain about us. If we are to be competitive over the long term, we need free trade but also fair trade."

Hillary can never be an effective President that is "for, of and by the people". She is a true politician with only self driven political ambitions. Why did she run for Senator of N.Y. state approximately 6-7 years ago? Was it because she had this intense desire to perform public service? Absolutely not. She knew that to have a shot at the Presidency she would have to have some credentials. She had no political service credentials prior to that. She did not have access or influence to the presidential political situations. She had NO prior political experience period. Now she claims to have vast experience. Technically she has less than Obama. She will lie, mislead Americans on a public forum, such as a national news program, about her credentials or her oponents facts. Then when confronted she will still deny, deny, deny. Then only off the air, and not on a national forum will she retract her statements, only when she knows noonw is listening / watching. Ever wonder why the Clinton library is currently not available to the public? This was done to hide the facts of her activities during Bills administration. If she claims she was at the White House during some major decision making time, but her library records show her being in Europe with Chelsea, you won't be able to prove it until AFTER the Democratic Convention. So, how do you like being manipulated by a pro. Let me use some descriptive words of this politician, liar, manipulative, deceptive, arrogant and self-serving. This type of politician will tell/promise you anything to get elected, once elected will do whatever they please to better enrich themselves and their political friends (old favors)because they think they know best regardless of the quality advisers available to them or the publics wishes, will only focus on getting re-elected, then will only be concerned about how they will go down in history. I would prefer a President that WORKS for me. That follows our wishes and those of our advisers, that knows what it is like to live in an environment that the politicians have created, Clinton has never had to worry about her financial stability, food money, credit card payments or losing your home, have a child TAKEN to serve in a war that should never have been, with this she cannot say to anyone that she knows our pain, knows how we feel, knows what we are going through etc. etc. B.S., B.S. B.S. Give me a candidate / president that works for the people. The peoples financial strength at home is what makes this country what it is. Think about it, if our country was not the financial power that it is, it could not pay for the military or wars. With no money we become a third world entity. All of our governments activities are paid for by the taxes paid in by the people. If the people are not stable and successful, then neither is our government. We need a candidate that is new, with no political baggage, nor concerns about how history will record his actions. The primary concern must be about our people, their financial stability and lastly their security ( because this will be taken care of when the previous items are performed successfully). No Billary.

Who voted for Hillary in OH? Here is an example from JPOST comments section and the rest was from Archie Bunker voters.

5. Calev is right
Like many (but not all) Orthodox Jews around Cleveland, my wife and I are McCain Republicans. Because Ohio permits cross-over voting, we voted in the Democratic primary for Hillary. This was NOT because we love (or even admire) her, but because we fear that Obama would negatively affect Israel, along with our son who lives in Israel and our daughter who is about to make aliyah. But did our votes have an impact? Not really. Nor will they likely have an impact in November -- when we vote for McCain. There are too few Jews to affect the outcome, except in highly aberrant votes like 2000.

It is time that POST should put an end to these instant postings. Most of this is pure RUBBISH dished out by OBAMA supporters who have lost their minds completely. If the POST does not allow every letter sent to it to be published in its print edition for the sake of editorial integrity, why is it allowing these OBAMA nut heads and Hillary haters to make postings accusing Hillary of killing dozens of people, including one shot minutes before his plane crashed. Is there anything more absurd than this one?

NYT has a policy of moderating reader's online comments and because of this it is always a pleasure to read those comments even if one may have disagreement with the substance of the argument. WP by not doing its job has opened up floodgates of rubbish to be poured into cyberspace. I think this must be stopped NOW. If Obama hugging WP staff has no time for moderating these comments, then there should be no comments at all. Dear WP--do not reduce yourself to be a trash can. If you can't manage your site, please shut it down.

Here is a REALLY great link to Rezko connection with Obama. The land deal is clear. The seller wouldn't sell the house without the land. Rezko was needing to hide money from investigators. Rezko had his wife buy the land and later sell it to Obama. Obama knew all the time the money was being kept hidden this way. There was also something about the price of the land and the price of the house 1.6 million dollar house for much less. It's all pretty convoluted. And I'm sure we'll be hearing more about it. Certainly hope so before he ever gets to a general election. He's already vulnerable in a million other ways.

Here is the site with Rezko info. One Degree of Separation -

The worse enemy Obama has is OBAMA HIMSELF!

The Prophet is hunted by his own words and double talking.Check what Obama said on NAFTA debating Keyes:

"While some people believe NAFTA has been good for U.S. farmers, the trade results could have been better, Keyes said. NAFTA negotiators said the United States might lose manufacturing jobs but would become a service economy, but now those service jobs also are being exported, he said."

"Obama said the United States benefits enormously from exports under the WTO and NAFTA."

If you believe that almost 200million dollars came from Obamas' tiny regular folk supporters - you ARE as naive as your Pied Piper. As a matter of fact the "brag" a few months ago was that his campaign began with small supporters and now he's tapping bigger ones - of course, since he had tiny caucus state momentum a few weeks ago. Now that he's gotten down off his circus float routine he's a bit more visable for the empty suit that he is. I'm interested in how much "street" money is being sent to him and if they get all the required names and addresses of the donors. He's tapping the big donors now, as well as twisting the arms of black politicians in the back room. That's nasty. No one should feel required to vote for him because he's black. It's the black-like-me card he trotted onto the stage with Oprah. It's really sleezy and doesn't ask you to vote for me if you think I'm the best candidate. It's vote for me if I look like you - and if you don't, you may not be elected the next time you run. That's TOM DELAY politics - and he is in criminal court for his arm twisting in the halls of DC. There isn't anything "different" and "new" about Obama. He's an eleven year Chicago politician with a real smoooth line to feed you. That's a great place to learn. And he didn't do much of anything there. Nothing new and different, nothing earth shattering and "government changing". No big news coming out of Illinois for those eleven years about anything he did. Never heard of him - in ALL THAT TIME. Mr. Obama is a song and dance, a channeling act of dead people he only WISHES he could be as great as. He's a real smooth act. Here, go see for yourself. I think you'll enjoy this:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080306.wleakupdate0306/BNStory/National/home

"Opposition MPs called for the head of the Prime Minister's chief of staff, Ian Brodie, Thursday after it was revealed an offhand remark he made to journalists preceded the leak of a confidential diplomatic discussion that rocked the U.S. presidential campaign."

"Mr. Brodie, during the media lockup for the Feb. 26 budget, stopped to chat with several journalists, and was surrounded by a group from CTV.

The conversation turned to the pledges to renegotiate the North American free-trade agreement made by the two Democratic contenders, Mr. Obama and New York Senator Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Brodie, apparently seeking to play down the potential impact on Canada, told the reporters the threat was not serious, and that someone from Ms. Clinton's campaign had even contacted Canadian diplomats to tell them not to worry because the NAFTA threats were mostly political posturing."

Martinedwinandersen actually has something there. Hillary would screw us over and if McCain actually gets it you can forget about America! He would send the U.S. so much farther into debt we would have to pay millions of dollars per person which none of us would have because the taxes would be so high and the country would collapse! What happened to the original ideas that this country was built on? Remember, staying out of everyone elses business and worrying about our own citizens before some other country's citizens? Obama actually gets the fact that the current way things are going is screwed up! Bring back real America! Obama '08!

That is an outrageous amount of money that could be put to better use caring for the poor - the very ones the Democrats claim they want to help. As a former community organizer, Obama should know better. Tell me, what is the purpose of raising such money? And how does this prove that Obama is the better candidate? It's shameful that political candidates are taking in this kind of money at a time of economic uncertainty in America. What in God's name are we doing?!

You haven't seen nothing yet. It will be higher in March.

Not only that, in 2010 we will raise money for Rendell's opponent and make sure he is OUT. That's right, we are now going to use the tactics used by some groups exclusively for far too long!

Geez, enough with the battling between Clinton and Obama supporters. Either of them would be infinitely superior to McCain.

All I want to know is why Hillary Clinton is heaping extraordinary praise on her would-be Republican opponent, John McCain? In the unlikely event that she becomes the Democratic nominee, how is she going to backpedal from all of this high praise? Two or three weeks ago, I would have been happy with either Barack Obama or Clinton, but no more. There is no longer any way I could be happy voting for Clinton.

PET PEEVE: Stop with the "Commander in Chief" BS. Before George Bush incessantly used this term to make himself sound important, you rarely heard the term used by anyone, let alone by the president about himself. Clinton has latched onto the term now, too. Enough. Why would anyone want to imitate Bush?

Hillary has been vetted for as long as she's been in the public eye, not only vetted but hounded and persecuted, blamed for everything from suicide in prison cells, to property deal collapses and the inability of married men to keep their snake in their pants. Until now, the Press has given Obama an easy ride. That's about to change.

Posted by: dhayjones | March 6, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

90% of that 55 million came from donations of $100 or less. Obama's campaign is not being funded by lobbyists and big money fat cats. The only folks "drinking the kool-aid" are the ones who think that he not going to win the nomination.

Hillary doesn't want her working-class supporters to know how rich she and Bill have become and where it is coming from. Release your tax returns! A very basic request, not an "attack". She made a big deal about Lazio dragging his feet on this during her Senate race in 2000 so what is taking so long now?

Question:

Another 55 million to be wasted. Too many people were fooled by this snakeoil salesman. What has he done before that qualify him to be president?

I am sorry, you Obama fanatics, but your idol is only a gasbag that will deflate in a pinprick. he has no worthy accomplishment to back his candidacy. He is too green to be trusted with the security of the people.
What has he done in the Senate? What has he done in Chicago? He doesn't even have any understanding of how politics work. He preaches CHANGE but what do you change? How can you change Washington when you are surrounding yourself with the same people?

If you Obama fans believe that you can beat John McCain because of HOPE and CHANGE
then you are in another world. You may not even recognize your idol when the right wing dirty tricks people are finished with him. I can just say goodluck to all of you if he becomes the nominee.

This amazing and historic fundraising is a phenomenal source of both money and effort for the Obama campaign. This is the reason that he was able to dramatically close the huge gap of 20 points by which Clinton was leading him in both Texas and Ohio only two weeks ago. The real story of these primaries is how the most well-connected and famous Democrat of the decade (Clinton) contrived to almost lose both these races to an outsider with no name recognition and few connections (Obama). This portends well for Obama's effort in Pennsylvania in which he will have seven weeks and perhaps 50 million dollars more to bring his case to the people.

Of course he is behind Clinton in Pennsy at the moment, but time (and money and energy) is on his side.

The Democratic party should be very worried that all of Obama's enthusiastic supporters will just sit on their wallets if Clinton is the nominee for the fall election. Her nomination will galvanize the GOP ranks and depress the Democratic donors, giving John (100 years in Iraq)McCain the presidency.
