A Tragic Tale - But is it True?

By Anne E. Kornblut
Is Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton repeating an anecdote on the campaign trail that turns out not to be true?

If she is, it's because her campaign apparently did not adequately check the story Meigs County, Ohio, deputy sheriff Bryan Holman told Clinton and her daughter during a Feb. 28 campaign stop, about a young pregnant woman who died after being turned away from the hospital for lack of $100. Recently unearthed video from the campaign trail shows that Clinton heard the story of Trina Bechtel almost exactly as she has been repeating it for the better part of a month.

After The Washington Post drew attention to Clinton's oft-told story, officials from a local hospital where the woman was eventually treated demanded that Clinton stop telling the anecdote because it suggested the hospital had been at fault.

"We implore the Clinton campaign to immediately desist from repeating this story," Rick Castrop, chief executive of the O'Bleness Health System told the New York Times; his company runs the hospital where the woman's baby was stillborn.

The young woman later died in Columbus.

But it is unclear whether the hospital in question in Clinton's story is, in fact, O'Bleness.

According to deputy sheriff Holman, Bechtel sought treatment -- he did not know where -- from a hospital and was turned away because she could not make a $100 payment. Hospital officials said they demanded the Clinton campaign stop repeating the story because there are some people in their community who erroneously believed it referred to O'Bleness Health System.

"It's not for certain that it is us, but there are people in our community who believe that it is. We did have the patient, but we're not certain if she went somewhere else as well," explained Lynn Anastas, vice president of community relations for O'Bleness Memorial Hospital and the Health System. "There are a number of neighboring counties that have hospitals; she easily could have gone somewhere else." Bechtel did have health insurance, Anastas said, adding: "We did not turn her away."

Clinton has come under fire for exaggerating about the dangers of a trip to Tuzla, Bosnia, as first lady, putting her remarks about the hospital in the spotlight.

Wait until Tomorrow - SUCKERS! SHE told the whole truth - you Obama supporters are insane!

I am sure that her inability to tell an accurate story is an example of her Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the Tuzla sniper fire.

Seriously though, if Hilary is going to accuse Bush of not doing his homework on Iraq, shouldn't she demonstrate a greater capacity for finding out the facts BEFORE she sets policy?

She lies about her past, she repeats gossip as fact, and she has no clue what her own campaign is lobbying for policies she claims to reject.

Not exactly a stellar record of competence!

It is another LIE from Hillary or embellishment of The Truth! which is just not good enough or the comment from a spokesman who said "we tried to check out the story but we could not confirm all the facts" - is this any compensation to the Bachel Family and the pain and upset it must have caused - NO! and it is not the way a Presidential candidate should behave.

Hillary has made other embodiments which she laughs off on TV Chat Shows, but this one is a disgrace and it is no wonder she has dropped it from her Stage Act!

Shame on You Hillary Clinton!

More important question since the Washington Post is the one that printed this woman's name (not Hillary) did your paper ever contact anyone besides the deputy sheriff and have you ever printed a retraction?

I think that Hillary did the right thing in keeping the story generic. The family did not even recognize their Trina--until the Washington Post printed her name. And you are the ones who named her but did not do any follow up.

This sounds like a case for the ombudsman for me, not for more "Gore is a liar" RNC oppo.

It just goes to show you that all the clintons would say anything, they all are natural born liars. She asks who would we hire for President, I would look at all the campaigns and see how they all ran. From what I see she might have made alot of money, but the way here campaign has been run I sure do not want her running the Government.

Senator Clinton's penchant for misrepresenting, stretching and bending truth earned her the very first Veruca Salt Award at "TheZoo"

and a honorary study in self-destruction, too:

The hospital in question here alleges that Hillary's staff never bothered to contact them in order to vet the story. If that is true, then Hillary's staff didn't just do a poor job vetting the story; they were completely negligent. As another poster aptly reminded us, Hillary also forgot to read the National Intelligence report prior to voting in favor of invading Iraq. If all the above is true, it really does call into question her readiness to take that 3 a.m call. Personally, I am amazed that the press hasn't questioned her and her staff more vigorously regarding their hypocrisy around trying to enfranchise the voter in Mich. and Fla., while at the same time disenfranchise all the voters who cast their votes for thousands of "pledged" delegates.

Here we go again!

This time Jake Tapper, no particular Obama friend, who helped break the Rev. Wright story to prominence, is reporting that in Oregon yesterday, Clinton "mis-spoke" again in comparing her Iraq record to Obama's.

"Clinton on Saturday told Oregonians, "when Sen. Obama came to the Senate he and I have voted exactly the same except for one vote. And that happens to be the facts. We both voted against early deadlines. I actually starting criticizing the war in Iraq before he did."

It's an odd way to measure opposition to the war -- comparing who gave the first criticism of the war in Iraq starting in January 2005, ignoring Obama's opposition to the war throughout 2003 and 2004.

But even if one were to employ this "Start Counting in January 2005" measurement, Clinton did not criticize the war in Iraq first.

Scrambling to support their boss's claim, Clinton campaign officials pointed to a paper statement Clinton issued on Jan. 26, 2005, explaining her vote to confirm Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State.

"The Administration and Defense Department's Iraq policy has been, by any reasonable measure, riddled with errors, misstatements and misjudgments," the January 2005 Clinton statement said. "From the beginning of the Iraqi war, we were inadequately prepared for the aftermath of the invasion with too few troops and an inadequate plan to stabilize Iraq."

But Obama offered criticisms of the war in Iraq eight days before that, directly to Rice, in his very first meeting as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Jan. 18."

I don't blame Hillary for "lying" about this Ohio hospital anecdote-- there was no reason for her not to believe the sheriff. But it does seem as though her staff should have fact-checked the story more carefully before sending her off on the campaign trail to share with crowd after crowd of people. Maybe they just shrugged and told her to run with it, since after all, "words don't matter!" ;-)

Hillary Clinton comes off as sloppy with important details: Why read the intelligence report when you can just go along with everyone else and authorize the war? She is also loose with facts in general.

A lot of the mistakes she's made indicate that she hasn't quite grasped the importance of the internet. Not only can people call her on her lies by digging up old video clips, but then news of the lies spreads like wildfire.

And I agree with the person who said that every time Clinton "remembers" something, it's time for suspension of disbelief.

She's not still in the race because she's a fighter, she's still in the race because she's out of touch with reality.

Has everyone forgotten the mantra back in 1996, "character doesn't matter". The Democrats of America trained the Clintons that lying was just fine and now look what we have. Character has always mattered and the fact that a congenital liar has gotten this far does not speak well of the Democrat Party.

Posted by: parlan | April 6, 2008 11:18 AM | Report abuse

Clinton has shown again and again that she indeed is a person of very poor judgment. We don't have to look far for the tell-tale signs for this. Unpaid invoices in her trail, bad management of her campaign fund, bad management of information and data, donating money to her own foundation just a year before she declared her candidacy and poor showing of her understanding of her situation in Mi and Fl, are some of those signs.

Furthermore, Hillary is, I believe, very much puzzled about the rise of this black man Obama and the fact that he survived the Wright controversy and as a result, is still in denial that this could be happening to her. That is the reason why she is convinced that she will eventually win the nomination, if she just hangs in there. She is convinced that the good old racist white folks of America will soon come to their senses and realize that they can never vote a colored man into the top job. Most importantly, she dearly hopes that those predominantly white supers will see this point and hand the nomination to her. She really is a tragic figure.

dochi1, that's been 'bothering' me since I heard the line come from her quivering, well-rehearsed delivery. What drama! I don't remember book bags from back then either. And I'd love to hear the rest of that story from her.

I just hope she didn't break her cell phone when the bookbag hit the wall.

this is a minor point but Hillary says she threw her "bookbag" agaisnt the wall when she heard of MLK's death. I went to school at the same time and I don't remember "bookbags" being in exsistence back then. In short, I think her whole story is made up and even though it's trivial it shows a pattern of making up lies.

Does Clinton's apparent willingness to play fast and loose with the facts after relying on bad information, which is then passed on to the public, remind you of someone else, someone who sleeps at the White House? Someone named uncurious George.
Kornblut seems awfully defensive of Clinton in this piece. Why is that? And the story is only on her blog, not in the newspaper. Why is that.

Bush had Rove. Hillary has Joseph Goebbels in her camp.

She obviously hews to his line that a lie repeated often enough becomes truth. Sadly, the worst lie she tells herself is that she can win. She can't and thus she won't. Hopefully, with the poll numbers tightening, and the blue collar voters in PA realizing they have nothing in common with little miss rich liar, the battle will end on the 22 of this month.

Stick a fork in her lying behind!!

This woman is pathetic. She is caught in lie after lie, fabrication after fabrication and we are all supposed to overlook her "misspeak" as she likes to call it. Over the past 40+ years I have seen presidential candidates and others for public office who make less gaffes on the campaign trail and their campaigns were derailed and they dropped out, but, not Hillary Rodham Clinton. She just keeps chugging along with all her drippy, feely good stories and "woe is us" liberalism.

How much longer do we have to listen to this insidious woman? Do the gracious thing, Hillary, get out now and spare us anymore embarassment here at home and abroad. They are laughing at you Hillary and it is so unpresidential.

On the OBAMA Laundary List's Author:
I felt sorry for the writer. You got 66 items, but I think there are 660 in all three candidates. Remember all three worked in Washington! I feel bad for you because you look as a mad man full of hatred. Most importantly you are so scared that you moved words around in many of the items, to make them look as true. So YOU are the bigger LIAR! It seams that you are not a Christian yourself(or at least a true one). So change your religion and become comfortable with the truth! - Jesus bless us all.

Maybe we give too much credit to Hillary for her intellegence. I am really not sure whether she is dumb, clever or just plainly mad. She would say anything to exploit the situation to her advantage which often backfires. She and her fat-cat Mark Penn have been very slow in grasping the true situation of her campaign. Well then again, her equally dogmatic supporters have not helped her seeing the truth of her viability either. A tragic farce !

When did the Washington Post become a tabloid? I grew up reading the Post - now I cannot trust you. Where is the journalistic research for this article? None. You just repeat what others sa ywithout caring about the truth.

53.)I Barely Know Rezko - Only 5 Billed Hours - LIAR, you have known him for 17 years, and decided to do a real estate deal with him during a time when he was proven to be under investigation. 54.) My Donations Have Been Checked Thoroughly - LIAR, you only gave back Hsu ($72K) and Rezko (first $66K, then when caught lying $86K, then when caught lying again $150K and now caught lying YET AGAIN OBAMA, it's $250k) their money when publically called on their involvement in your campaigns.

56.) I Disagree With My Church All The Time - LIAR, you still have yet to repudiate Wright, who married you and your wife, and you still donate large sums of money to assist the church in furthering its message - hatred and revenge. You donated in 2006 alone, $22,500 to the church that you so terribly disagree with. That is nearly $500 PER WEEK - that sure is disagreement, Senator Obama.

57.) I Have Clean Connections Despite Rezko - LIAR, you are not only connected to Exelon and Rezko, you are also connected to Hillary PAC supporter Mr. Hsu, AND an Iraqi Billionaire of ill repute, Nadhmi Auchi, who ripped off people in the Food For Oil, Iraqi deal. Wonder what favors Mr. Auchi expects, when Obama leaves Iraq free to be taken over by special interests such as him.

58.) I never heard sermons like Rev. Wright's, that have been in videos all day, You Tube - LIAR! 3 days later during your Mea Culpa BS speech you said "Did I hear controversial statements while I sat in that church? Yes I did."

59.) The Passport Invasion is a conspiracy to find dirt on me! - LIAR. Your own Campaign Foreign Policy Advisor is the CEO of the company that looked into your records. PS - You had them look into yours to hide the fact you looked into Clinton's and McCain's more than a year before!

60.) Rev. Meeks has nothing to do with my campaigning - LIAR. Rev. Meeks appeared in ads for your Senate Campaign, donated to you, and helped raise money, then AND NOW. PS - He also seems to despise America.

61.) My wife didn't mean America is ignorant, she was just using a phrase - LIAR. Again, MicHELLe's comments perfectly sync with Wright's, Meeks', and Farrakhans, both in language, anger, and direction.

62.) I am very Anti-Terror - LIAR. [03/30/2008] One of your good pals is long time radical and terrorist William Ayers, with whom you have been seen in the last 12 months and who has helped the now jailed khalidi, Professor at Columbia who invited Ahmadinejad to the University, to raise money for Palestinian terrorism attacks against Israel. PS - Your church published a pro Hamas Manifesto - guess you weren't there on THAT Sunday either? How lucky for you.

63.) I have the best plan to cure the Mortgage Crisis - LIAR. [03/30/2008] You and your campaign buddy Penny SubPrime Bank Collapse Prizker have had your little fingers full of subprime cash - Obama has taken $1,180,103 from the top issuers of subprime loans: Obama received $266,907 from Lehman, $5395 from GMAC, $150,850 from Credit Suisse First Boston, $11,250 from Countrywide, $9052 from Washington Mutual, $161,850 from Citigroup, $4600 from CBASS, $170,050 from Morgan Stanley, $1150 from Centex, and last but certainly NOT LEAST - Obama received $351,900 from Goldman Sachs. I am sure that cash all came from folks who knew the subprime loan they had was a dream, eh?

64) I played greater role in crafting liberal stands on gun control, the death penalty and abortion - LIAR - [03/31/2008] It was found that Obama -- the day after sitting for the interview -- filed an amended version of the questionnaire, which appears to contain Obama's own handwritten notes added to one answer. Read Obama had greater role on liberal survey

65) I did NOT play the race card: - LIAR - [03/31/2008] Obama was the first to play the race card. According to Phialdelphia Inquirer, Quietly, the storm over the hateful views expressed by Sen. Barack Obama's pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has blown away the most insidious myth of the Democratic primary campaign. Obama and his surrogates have charged that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has deliberately and cleverly played the race card in order to label Obama the "black" candidate. Read more here

66) I did not take money from oil companies: - LIAR - [03/31/2008]
THE FACTS: True enough, Obama does not take money from oil companies. No candidate does. It is illegal for corporations to give money to politicians. Corporations, however, do have political action committees that collect voluntary donations from employees and then donate them to candidates. Obama doesn't take money from PACs. He also doesn't take money from lobbyists.

But he does accept money from executives and other employees of oil companies and two of his fundraisers are oil company executives. As of Feb. 29, Obama's presidential campaign had received nearly $214,000 from oil and gas industry employees and their families, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Clinton had received nearly $307,000 from industry workers and their families and Republican Sen. John McCain, the likely GOP presidential nominee, received nearly $394,000, according to the center's totals.

Two of Obama's fundraisers are Robert Cavnar, the chairman and chief executive of Houston-based Mission Resources Corp., and George Kaiser, the president and CEO of Tulsa-based Kaiser-Francis Oil Co. Source: Associated press via Yahoo News

Yawn. Candidates ALWAYS use stories told to them on the campaign trail. The sheriff said he told her the story. It rings true. Could it be he got it wrong from someone else? Perhaps, but it would not surprise anyone that someone WAS turned away from a hospital if they had a high bill. It illustrates a point, a point that is certainly realistic.

If you are going to post something- don't edit- here is the rest of the FACT CHECK

It's true that Obama doesn't take money directly from oil companies, but then, no presidential, House or Senate candidate does. They can't: Corporations have been prohibited from contributing directly to federal candidates since the Tillman Act became law in 1907.

Obama has, however, accepted more than $213,000 in contributions from individuals who work for, or whose spouses work for, companies in the oil and gas industry, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. That's not as much as Sen. Hillary Clinton, who has received more than $306,000 in donations from people tied to the industry, but it's still a substantial amount.

contributions are from individuals
clinton took 50% more from same sources

As the article concludes: Obama does not take money from PACS but it is far from a perfect system

On the fortieth anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, Senator Clinton gave a heartfelt address on how hard Dr. King's death had struck her as a junior at Wellesley University. She remembers coming home to her dorm room and flinging her bookpack against the wall, feeling "we had lost everything." She had one of those teary-eye moments, and paused ever so dramatically to underscore it and catch her emotions. Very touching; except because of her--as William Safire labeled it--"congenital lying," I don't believe a word of it. This senator no longer garners from me the benefit of the doubt. Any story of hers that she starts out with, "I remember when" immediately sets off cognitive dissonance alarms. She mis-remembered what happened in Tuzla 14 years ago; how can she accurately remember what she did 40 years ago? What is perhaps most troubling of all is not that she is a congenital liar, but that she actually, truly believes her fabrications to be the truth. Like Paris Hilton, Sen. Clinton sits aloft on rarefied throne whereby the accepted rules of human behavior simply do not apply to her. I am convinced she suffers from a major behavioral disorder. Her psychology is complex, and yours would be too if you were married to serial philanderer Bill Clinton. Back in the blue dress days, she said on 60 Minutes that she wasn't "like some Tammy Wynette, stand by your man." ...isn't that exactly what she has done all these years? She is so power mad that she subjugated her own personality and absorbed Bill's continued disrespect just so she could position herself as rightful heir to the presidency, knowing her peer group female voter would feel sorry for her. Now for her to be upstaged by a younger, smarter, quicker-witted opponent, and a junior senator at that, must be particularly galling. She told Gov. Bill Richardson that Sen. Obama "can't win," leaving a clear implication that the reason is because of Obama's skin color. To do this on Dr. King's day of remembrance makes it beyond insulting. Even for a Clinton.

It's called truthiness. Ronnie Raygun did it all the time. He was perfectly capable of delivering his lines with heartfelt sincerity (a B-grade actor after-all) and believing it....even if it wasn't true..Repeat often enough, get the press to print it..presto! It's true!

-Funny how you don't see this article in the WP. Why not at least pretend to be fair and balanced.

Obama's Oil Spill
March 31, 2008
Obama says he doesn't take money from oil companies. We say that's a little too slick.
In a new ad, Obama says, "I don't take money from oil companies."

Technically, that's true, since a law that has been on the books for more than a century prohibits corporations from giving money directly to any federal candidate. But that doesn't distinguish Obama from his rivals in the race.

We find the statement misleading:

* Obama has accepted more than $213,000 from individuals who work for companies in the oil and gas industry and their spouses.

* Two of Obama's bundlers are top executives at oil companies and are listed on his Web site as raising between $50,000 and $100,000 for the presidential hopeful.

Did anyone else see Hillary on Leno's show, joking about being "under fire" at Burbank airport? I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Now she thinks we should all just laugh it off! She 'misspoke' -- lighten up! Get over it! Can you imagine the uproar there would have been if Obama had 'misspoken' like that, and claimed he had dodged sniper fire? For all the fake outrage about Rev. Wright's words, those words came from HIM, not Obama. This lie came straight out of Hillary's mouth, not once, not twice, but at least FOUR TIMES! Yeah, she 'misspoke'.

What it reminds me of the most, is our idiot President Bush, when he pokes fun at the fact that he led us to war over a bunch of lies. You know, when he clowns around, saying "Those weapons of mass destruction must be under here!" and looks under the furniture, and our esteemed Press Corps guffaws and splits their sides over his antics. What a hoot! What hijinx! Now Hillary plays the same game, and does the press care? (Is the Pope Jewish?)

Please, good citizens of Pennsylvania, put an end to our long national nightmare, and send Hillary Clinton back home, so she can finally divorce sexual predator Bill and get on with building her new life. She'll be happier, and so will America.

The problem is that Clinton has too many untruths, half-truths, exagerations, and just plain lies. I am not willing to give her the benefit of the doubt anymore. Way back at the beginning of the campaign, I didn't know whether I would vote for Clinton or Obama. I admittedly jumped on the Obama bandwagon very quickly. Now, though, I can't imagine why I ever even considered voting for Clinton. A commander-in-chief needs to know the difference between a sniper and a little girl with flowers. A president needs to surround themselves with the right people. Hillary's choices, if you go by her campaign staff, make Bushes choices look good (and that's almost impossible)!!! And while this sad story can't compare with Iraq--isn't it the same process--not vetting information? Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton is just too much of these two dysfunctional families.

A California university has developed a fool-proof method to determine if Hillary is lying or not - if her lips are moving, she's lying.

She tells fictional stories on the campaign trail - quel surprise! Clinton couldn't even be bothered to "vet" the NIE before the Iraq vote. Does one truly think she's going to verify the truth of stories that get a rise out of the crowd at campaign events?

If Clinton had any real integrity, she's give a widely-publicized public statement, admitting that the just found out this story is just that - fiction. From what I've read, this anecdote gets the strongest crowd response - these citizens deserve to know the truth before they vote.

This isn't as bad as Tuzla tarmac, but the media and the average voter will digest it as a similar occurrence. Why the bizarre exaggerations?

Okay here we go again.

Hillary shoots herself in the foot and her campaign tries to find some way to blame the media and tie in Obama. You guys are pathetic.

Isn't someone in her campaign supposed to check this? This is like watching the Keystone cops run a presidential campaign. :)

Here's some simple advice in dealing with the media, and because I'm not a high-priced political consultant, I'm giving it away:

Tell the truth and keep telling the truth. It saves you alot of time and money. Once the media realize you're trying to "spin" them, they are going to start to look for inconsistencies in your story, i.e. a negative feedback loop. Don't blame the media; blame yourself.

Sometimes the biggest lies make the best theatre. What's appalling is the repetition of the false story after its veracity has been questioned. Since when is fact checking so hard to do. HIllary clearly cares less about veracity and more about impact. She should just make the stuff rather than twist facts.

Okay, time to STOP now with the "Trout for Obama" trivia and do some real investigative journalism. Hell, does anyone at WaPo even know the names Woodward and Bernstein anymore??????

Also Saturday, Clinton campaign officials acknowledged that an anecdote Clinton has made a staple of her stump speech in recent weeks may not have been true and wasn't thoroughly checked for accuracy before she began repeating it on the campaign trail.

Since competing in Ohio's March 4 primary, Clinton has shared the story of an Ohio woman who worked in a pizza parlor and died after giving birth to a stillborn child. The woman was uninsured, Clinton said, and twice denied medical care at a local hospital because she couldn't pay a $100 fee.

Clinton said she learned of the story from a deputy sheriff whose home she visited while campaigning in Ohio. She told the story as recently as late Friday, at a rally in Grand Forks, N.D.

Officials with O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio, have disputed the story, saying the woman, Trina Bachtel, was insured and did receive care through an obstetric practice affiliated with the hospital, The New York Times reported Saturday.

Hospital officials did not immediately return phone calls Saturday from The Associated Press.

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee acknowledged that the campaign had tried but hadn't been able to "fully vet" the story before she began repeating it on the campaign trail."

Unbelievable ... she's stopped being able to distinguish truth from lies.

These people mean nothing to Hillary. Having convinced herself that she can still win because it would not be fair othersise, this situation true or not is something to exploit.
