Clinton Narrowly Wins in Indiana while Obama Romps in North Carolina
By Chris Cillizza
Sen. Barack Obama won a convincing victory over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton Tuesday in North Carolina and nearly toppled her in Indiana, twin results that could ramp up pressure on the New York senator to reconsider her candidacy for the Democratic nomination.
Clinton claimed a 51 percent to 49 percent victory in Indiana, a margin of just 22,000 votes statewide out of 1.2 million votes cast. The result was badly delayed due to extremely slow counting of votes in Lake County, a northwestern area seen as strong Obama country.
Clinton emerged just before 10:45 p.m. yesterday in Indianapolis, showing no signs of backing down despite her defeat in North Carolina and the uncertainty of the outcome in Indiana.
"We've come from behind," Clinton said. "We've broken the tie and thanks to you its full speed on to the White House."
In his victory speech in Raleigh, N.C., earlier in the evening, Obama made clear that North Carolina had not been the "game changer" that Clinton had predicted it would be.
"There were those who were saying North Carolina would be a game changer in this election," Obama said. "What North Carolina decided is the only game that needs changing is the one in Washington, D.C."
