Obama to Sub for Kennedy at Wesleyan Commencement
Updated 4:59 p.m.
By Shailagh Murray
Sen. Barack Obama will deliver the commencement address Sunday at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, filling in for his ailing friend Ted Kennedy.
Kennedy, who was diagnosed this week with brain cancer, asked Obama to stand in for him. "Considering what he's done for me and for our country, there's nothing I wouldn't do," said Obama in a statement.
The Democratic front-runner had previously planned to take the day off.
"Throughout the last week, Senator Obama has offered his support to Senator Kennedy including stepping in to deliver the commencement address at Wesleyan University," Kennedy's office said in a statement. "Senator Kennedy accepted knowing it would be an historic opportunity for the school and all those attending, including his daughter Caroline Raclin who is graduating and his son Ted Jr. who is attending his reunion. He's enormously grateful to Senator Obama and the support he's received from all of his colleagues this last week."

My other point, Carolyn Grace, is it is just the height of stupidity for you to correct someone's impression of what "this is about". How the hell do you know?
Posted by: Anonymous | May 23, 2008 1:15 PM
Thanks, I hate explaining.

Carolyn Grace:
That's just someone making fun of a certain Washington Post reporter who is in love with the way Obama (as she describes it) "glides" through a room ...
Posted by: JakeD | May 23, 2008 10:54 AM
The request came from his friend Senator Kennedy. How is Obama making that political? Really your ignorance is amazing. You must be one of those who would prefer to reject a black man working in your interest to vote for someone who will bleed you dry with more of same. Just as long as the person is white...it's all that matters. You are the type of American that makes us all ashamed but you are free to hate.

To the person giving the lesson on Wesleylan vs Wellesley....What was the point of that?
Posted by: Lanette | May 23, 2008 7:44 AM
WELLESLEY IS NOT WESLEYAN.
WELLESLEY = ALL GIRLS
WESLEYAN = CO-ED LITTLE IVY

What do you mean by the way "he glides"? Are you talking about the strides he takes when he walks? Has it now come to making fun of the way Senator Obama walks? Is that all you've got?
This is about a friend helping out a friend that is very ill and he and his family have done a lot for this country. They have sacrificed 3 sons, one in war and two gunned down in their prime serving this country. Senator Obama is helping his friend Senator Kennedy. He didn't ask Hillary to do it, did he?

Greenfun,
Every vote? Really? You might want to rethink that ridiculous comment.
You and the other Hillbots are the dregs of this nation. How can you be so blind? Everyone just sitting back watching our country get hijacked by megalomaniacs. And like the sheep we are, we just sit back and watch.

To All concerned Democratic Party Members:
Below is a link to ALL of the 200+ uncommitted superdelegates who have not decided! It's time that we as democrats put an end to the PROPAGANDA and DISENGENUOUS campaiging of the Clinton campaign and their staff members. They are using Florida and Michigan to overturn the will of the voters and pledged delegates. The three remaining states will not change any math and at this point, BARAK OBAMA has earned the NOMINATION and to play these ugly games are pitiful. PER ARIANNA of the Huffingtonpost, "WE SHOULD NOT TELL HILLARY CLINTON TO STAND DOWN BUT WE SHOULD TELL THE REMAINING UNCOMMITTED SUPERDELEGATES TO STAND UP AND SHUT THIS THING DOWN"....It is unfair that leaders of the DNC have allowed this unjust treatment of Obama and the pitiful campagning of Hillary. She has injected race, class, and sexism into this primary campaign in hopes of successfully getting what she demands - - THE NOMINATION! We as democrats must contact these uncommitted superdelegates and demand that they take a stance NOW. The link is http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/2008/01/superdelegates-who-havent-endorsed.html. You may also get the link the visiting the "HUFFINGTON POST" at www.huffingtonpost.com. Let all of us that a have a voice, speak NOW Or forever hold your peace! We will not let them steal the nomination from Obama or continue to hurt his chances of winning the General Election!

Ted knows Obama and Clinton the best, and his choice of Obama tells A LOT. Thank you Ted for what you and your family have done for this country. America is simply a better place because of you.

What an opportunist.
Clinton is campaigning on counting every single vote. But also that every Democratic delegate should be focused on who can win in November.
Obama is campaign on disenfranchising voters so he can win, regardless of whether he's got the strongest case for November, which he does not.
Posted by: greenfun | May 22, 2008 5:38 PM
He's got HUGE hands. Have you seen them?

Barack Obama is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.

I salute Obama. This is the mark of a friend and of a great man.

Hillary went to Wellesley, his is Wesleyan. It's a lot of the same letters, but a different college.
This is a nice bit of support from Obama.

I'm 35, and have been following politics for quite a while, and I've never been so disappointed with a politician I've admired and respected. Yesterday's tactics weren't just wrong, they were offensive. For that matter, they seem to be part of a deliberate strategy to tear Democrats apart and ensure a defeat in November.
For several weeks, I've appreciated the fact that Clinton considers herself the superior candidate, and has kept her campaign going in the hopes, from her perspective, of saving the party from itself. But after yesterday, it's become impossible for me to consider Clinton's intentions honorable. Her conduct is not that of a leader.
Instead of trying to help bring the party together -- Election Day is 24 weeks away -- Clinton went to Florida to argue that if Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee, his nomination will be illegitimate. And if the DNC plays by the rules Clinton used to support, it's guilty of vote-suppression -- comparable to slavery, Jim Crow, and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe.
It is disgusting for HRC to co-opt the Civil Rights struggle after weeks of transparent appeals that whites won't vote for the black guy which JUST SO COINCIDENTALLY took form during the Appalachian primaries (which conveniently occurred after North Carolina, the last state with a large black population)
It really is disgusting, and yet another nail in the coffin of what used to be Bill and Hillary's positive legacy to the party. She is now being openly mocked across the media and political spectrum. But I'm sure mentioning that is "sexist", and that everyone criticizing the joke her campaign has become is sexist as well.

What a great show of support for a friend.
May God bless and keep Barack Obama as he continues to hold his head high in this world of ignorance and racism.
May God bless and keep Ted Kennedy and family as they begin a very serious and personal journey.
Human Being For Obama

What is wrong with him steping up to the plate for someone who has been diagnosed with a serious disease? He did'nt offer to do it, he was asked. If he had refused you would said he was a terrible person for refusing to help someone who had supported him.
God help a friend of yours if they ever need you. Its apparent what you'd say. "You're on your own budddy".
Stop the nonsense America!!
He did not know that Kennedy was going to get sick and he did not know that he was going to be asked.

Geniuses, Hillary graduated from Wellesley, a women's college in Massachusetts. Wesleyan is a coed university in Connecticut.
Posted by: J.D. | May 22, 2008 4:32 PM
Way to go Obama filling in for Ted! For you dumba$$e$ that think Ted Kennedy is faking brain cancer, you make me sick. Cancer is nothing to second guess if you have known someone who had it.
But it is ironic that Obama will be speaking at Wesleyan College, the very same college that Hillary graduated from.
Posted by: AJ | May 22, 2008 4:30 PM
This isn't a political move. Obama won't gain much by going to Wesleyan. As an alumni, I can tell you that he will be preaching to the choir. Obama is simply helping out a friend in need.
Posted by: Lisa8 | May 22, 2008 4:28 PM
Isn't that Hillary alma mater?
Of course, the attention will be on Obama, not the young people graduating. But it will be cool to tell your friends and family that Barack Obama spoke at your commencement.
Honestly, I'm not impressed. It's a non-event.

I forgot to lead with an obnoxious, patronizing "Sigh,".
Sorry!
Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2008 4:27 PM
I feel so sorry for the cultists and campaign operatives who only think Sen. Obama is filling in for Sen. Kennedy for altruistic reasons. Thank God there are those individuals who see Sen. Obama as a politician who is happy to stand in for a "great exposure!"...no compassion just politics.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2008 4:26 PM
...unless it's "great exposure". But, then it might be crass and political.

It seems awfully thoughtless for Kennedy to ask the busiest guy in the world to work his day off.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2008 4:22 PM
Good for Obama...this is great exposure!
Posted by: Lillian | May 22, 2008 4:20 PM
Do you really have the time, and more important the energy to scrutinize every single event...come on..the man is ill ans he asked a friend to take his place. Please!
Posted by: mel | May 22, 2008 4:19 PM
This is absolutely great.
Ted Kennedy was there for Obama, and now he will step in and help him. It's a relatively small thing, but it is important. I am proud of Sen. Obama for helping his friend and ally.
I also hope Sen. Kennedy can enjoy his time at home sailing and working out the things he needs to address right now. I am happy he made the choice to bug out for a while before beginning treatment. It was the smart thing to do. Godspeed, Senator Kennedy.
