Contested Video Spreads Like Wildfire Online

Updated 1:40 p.m.
By Jonathan Weisman
A provocative video clip alleging to show a longtime friend of Hillary Clinton using a racial slur to describe the citizens of Indiana was sent to political reporters this morning by an independent public relations consultant who favors Barack Obama. Both the filmmaker and the subject of the film excerpt are calling the clip a fraud.

Eric Schmeltzer, a political and communications consultant based in N.Y., says he came across the YouTube video this morning on Digg.com, a popular content-aggregating site. The clip was posted to YouTube today by someone using the moniker "Indy007q" -- clear references to both the upcoming Indiana primary on Tuesday and fictional British secret agent James Bond.

The 37-second clip was purportedly taken from "The War Room," the 1993 documentary about Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign, and displayed white subtitles over fuzzy sound. In the clip, Mickey Kantor -- a long-time friend of the Clintons, former U.S. Trade Representative, Commerce Secretary and Hillary Clinton adviser -- is shown speaking in the most disparaging terms of Indiana voters. At one point the video clip, he uses the N-word to describe white Indiana voters.

Boom. Within hours, the video had gone viral, gracing the front page of the Drudge Report and topping Daily Kos's "Recommend Diaries," among other websites.

In an interview, Kantor called the clip a fraud and angrily threatened to sue whoever posted it for libel.

He didn't deny the first line, where he says, "Those people are s- - t" in reference to poll data he was discussing in the clip with James Carville and George Stephanopoulos, which showed Clinton up 42-40 in Indiana. But Kantor said he was referring to the polling outfit, not the voters of Indiana.

(Kantor may deny he was speaking of the people of Indiana, but others in the past have heard otherwise. A November 1993 article on the movie by Washington Post film critic Desson Howe made note of its realism, saying, "Whether Carville and company are play-acting somewhat for the cameras becomes less important as the film progresses. One can only keep up an act for so long -- especially in the throes of a campaign. Carville's tearful farewell speech to his staff as they close up just before the election, Stephanopoulos's frank talk with a potential blackmailer and a Mickey Kantor comment about the people of Indiana (when it looks as though Clinton's ahead in Dan Quayle's state) attest to this.")

As for the N-word, Kantor angrily said he is a civil rights lawyer. His father was kicked off the Nashville school board for favoring integration.

"I am outraged about this. I would ever ever use that word about anyone at any time," Kantor said. "If I find out who did this, I'm suing them for libel."

D.A. Pennebaker, director of "The War Room," said today the clip is clearly doctored. It is longer than the original, for one, and Kantor never said anything like what is being ascribed to him. He was, in fact, talking about election turn-out and the panic that George H.W. Bush's White House must have been in.

"It's kind of terrifying," Pennebaker said of the wildfire spread of the clip, which has already been removed from some of the websites that were promoting it."That film has been around for 15 years. Many people have seen it, and that concept has never come up before."

Pennebaker is at work right now on a documentary tracking where "The War Room" stars are today, with updates on Stephanopolous, Carville, Kantor and others.

"That campaign was so successful," he said. "I'm surprised the Democrats haven't learned a lesson from it."

But the press can't even focus on the issues because it doesn't fit their political agenda. How about exposing Kantor for the WTO lobbyist that he is. I think we can all see what Clinton's stance is on outsourcing.

How about these facts:

An advocate of free trade, Kantor, as Trade Representative, lead U.S. negotiations that created the World Trade Organization (WTO), such as the Uruguay Round, and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). He also engaged in organizating the Miami Summit of the Americas and three meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, including the U.S.-hosted First Leaders' Meeting. With the European Commission of the newly formed European Union, he expanded the trans-Atlantic market.

CNN and every other "news" organization out there are no better than FOX. When it was about Rev. Wright it was shoot and ask questions later, but when damning video evidence surfaces about Clinton and her character you guys decide to take the "high road" and actually focus on the "issues".

The press endorsement of Clinton and editorial malfeasance to that end is disgraceful. I used to think you guys were pros for the most part. Shame on you!

Hey, the way it always happens for Obama is this: he's behind or perceived to be behind in the polls; Clinton is more popular. Guess what? The racial smears and slurs start.

Doubt it? Go back to NH, after Clinton's very first win. That is when it started and every time a new primary approaches, especially if Obama is behind, some "anonymous" somebodies start a racial campaign. I frankly think the Wright affair was just a ginned-up thing to begin with, by the Obama campaign, to get sympathy and votes.

The man is a Class "A" panderer, opportunist and empty suit. You should read the story about his father. Seems like Obama, Jr. is following in his father's destructive footsteps...sowing discontent simply for discontent's sake, burning bridges behind him as far as they'll go, setting himself up with "insiders" in D.C. to become an even bigger opportunist.

Did Obama sign a document as part of his church that affirms himself to the Black Liberation Theology as expressed by Cone?

Well, if he did, then we know the real source of this race based gutter garbage. Keep the politics about real issues and not make believe fabricated nonsense.

If this kind of attack from Obama keeps up then he is dooming not only his campaign he is putting the Democratic Party at risk.

Shame.

DEBATE! DEBATE!! DEBATE!!!

It's time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP.

Hillary Clinton seemed almost somber at her Pennsylvania victory speech. As if part of her was hoping Obama could have proved he had some chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources.

But it is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up.

Hillary Clinton say's that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Mr. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World.

Mr. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Mr. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes.

If Mr. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human.

Sen. Hillary Clinton: "You know, more people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent. In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination. And it's also clear that we've got nine more important contests to go."

Sincerely

MY FELLOW "BITTER", STUPID, WORKING CLASS PEOPLE :-)

If you think like Barack Obama, that WORKING CLASS PEOPLE are just a bunch of "BITTER"!, STUPID, PEASANTS, Cash COWS!, and CANNON FODDER. :-(

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

Best regards

jacksmith... Working Class :-)

p.s. You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you don't know that the huge amounts of money funding the Obama campaign to try and defeat Hillary Clinton is coming in from the insurance, and medical industry, that has been ripping you off, and killing you and your children. And denying you, and your loved ones the life saving medical care you needed. All just so they can make more huge immoral profits for them-selves off of your suffering...

You see, back in 1993 Hillary Clinton had the audacity, and nerve to try and get quality, affordable universal health care for everyone to prevent the suffering and needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of you each year. :-)

Approx. 100,000 of you die each year from medical accidents from a rush to profit by the insurance, and medical industry. Another 120,000 of you die each year from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don't die from. And I could go on, and on...

Why do people blame Sen Obama for every negative thing that comes out against Hillary? Her supporters blamed Sen Obama when she was questioned about her Bosnia sniper fire lies. They blamed him when she was questioned about her comment, that she played a major part in bringing peace to Northern Ireland. Sen Clinton is a habitual liar. She lies even when it's not necessary to lie.

I am not a part of Sen Obama's campaign, but if I found something that revealed the real face of Sen Clinton and her advisors, I would flood the internet with that info.

What's amazing to me is not whether this video is true or false. Instead, it is the race to give the Clintons the benefit of a doubt and yank videos offline before the public can judge it for themselves. The MSM never gives the Obama camp the benefit of any doubts. Talk about a double standard.

I, for one, given Hillary's "God bless rich people" comment to Bill O'Reilly the other day on fax (maybe you Hillary clones can turn that in2 a hoax as well), and her nineties "screw 'em" rant about working class people in general see this as prove that the MSM is in the Clintons pocket.

Big Brother is here people.

Created by an Obama supporter I am sure, passed on by an Obama supporter definitely and once again the Obama camp goes racist. Don't tell me the dirtiest of tricks are coming from the Clinton campaign ever again. His whole campaign has been based and run in crying racism whenever something negative comes out. It is a continuous daily mantra whenever someone says the black community will not vote if they feel the nomination has been "stolen" from Obama. Is that the only constituency now that makes up the democratic party? This whole race has been sickening with one side getting the blame for everything and the other side getting treated like the second coming. I can fully see why other Clinton supporters will have trouble voting for Obama after listening and living through his campaign along with his supporters.

The Trail notes that the video turned up in Kos diaries posted by users. Some Obama supporters clearly recc'ed up the diary containing the video. The Trail might also have noted that other Obama supporters recc'ed up another diary advising against taking the video to be genuine and claiming it was a hoax. It remains unclear to me what exactly was said in the undoctored/unenhanced audio versions I've seen. Perhaps some reporting could be done. Don't you folks have access to technology.

Also, the folks spamming the thread pretending Obama and his campaign had anything to do with this are degenerates. Where do these people come from?

Finally, how about some coverage of the Magnequench affair? This has been part of Hillary's stump speech all over Indiana and it's important that the media fact check the candidates. That should be your role instead of all this gossip.

Poor job of objective reporting; great job of framing the issue to make a denial look like an accusation and rather than expose a nasty bit of campaign fakery (the clip) to insinuate that Kantor really said what the faked version 'made' him say. . . .
I really did used to think the Post was a good news source -- probably an illusion left over from Watergate days. . . .
The video is not "contested"; it's a fake.
For some more detached reporting, check the Newsweek blog by Romano, which is not only better written than Weisman's piece, it is actually an example of detached (a.k.a., objective) journalism. . . .

Obama is desperate, he knows people are learning what a hypocrite he is and he is trying to paint Hillary as a racist. But remeber it was him who sat in that bigot, unpatriotic and divisive church for 20 years. And just now he feels that he has to separate himself from Wright. What did Wright said different this week that he had not said before. Absolutely nothing. But that church all of the sudden became a liability to him, because he is a user and he doesn't need Wright anymore. He knows that AA are going to vote for him blindly and he is dissing them. He has assiociated himself with terrorists ( Ayers) and criminals ( Rezko), his problems are his own doing and he can't blame them on Hillary. He uses the race card for his own profit and Americans can see him for what he is an elitist, unpatriotic, egotistic user and arrogant liar.

Kantor? Kantor? Isn't Kantor the guy that negotiated NAFTA, fending off "efforts by the automobile, textile, steel and other industries" to protect jobs in America?

Maybe Mickey Kantor was simply stating in a colorful way that Indianans wouldn't mind Clinton's trade deal with Mexico and Canada, that they wouldn't think about it at all.

Posted by: FirstMouse | May 2, 2008 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Let's see, the Washington Post suggests the video of Kantor is the result of a conspiracy to smear Clinton

And we find that, on the other hand, Palfrey's alleged suicide, when considering how high up the food chain her services went - and when we consider one of her employees recently [also] mysteriously suicided, and, after she had iterated on the record several times she would do no such thing, the "morphed from 4th Estate to 5th Column" Washington Post is quite content with the official hogwash?

I guess Palfrey's mother, who had the good maternal sense to raise her daughter to be a pimp, will certainly give us the truth - as soon as she rings out her deceased daughters ATM card.

How much does it pay to be a journalistic pretender and facilitate the destruction of our constitution, allow the rule of blackmail be substituted for rule by the people, and and exalt war crimes, genocide and the fraudulent extortion of Americans?

I hope you guys get top dollar and enjoy while you can - because when this all crumbles down - you not quite ready for prime time shills at the WP will dropped like a two day old enchilada TV dinner and in the cage with those your facilitations have harmed.

Love your cross words - can't wait to see you guys on the dinner table!

So many comments on this blog have'nt a clue to the real truth. They form thier opinion on hearsay and then present it as Gospel truth.
The Truth is both Clinton and Obama are ambitious, both are trying to reach out to voters to gain thier future votes, both are willing to push thier truth, to convince voters they are the one to choose...
The truth is, this is politics and the real truth is the first casualty.
The real truth I look for is, why in the world would anybody want the job of President...it is a 24/7 very unforgiving job, that will require a real statesman to do a good job, not some egotistical dufus like we've had the last eight years.
I'll admit the real truth is hard to find, especially in a heated blog.
Better to judge an alligator on its old habits and performance, not the toothy smile it displays.
Get out, find the truth and vote for the person that has been and done what they claim.

Considering Stephanopoulos and Carville's act during this campaign, why is anyone surprised about Mickey Cantor? They were low-life to start with and they are low-life now. The thing is though; Obama will take the high road on this, though Clinton never would. When asked, Obama should just say: "Mickey Cantor is not a racist.... as far as I know." But he won't. His integrity gets on my nerves sometimes. Thank God we don't have to worry about that with Clinton.

I will be VERY pleased to vote for either one of them ... and yet the extremist supporters are falling over themselves as they try to outdo their rival idiots ....

Get a grip people ....

The Conservatives who have lead this country for a decade have destroyed what used to be a decent middle class existence for us. And while both candidates have their faults; NONE of those faults come close to that of the Conservatives, who have picked the pockets of their fellow citizens since before 2000, and who have proven just how bankrupt their philosophy is through the meltdown of the marketplace.

It is time to focus on the REAL problem: Settle this petty p*ssing contest, and let's move on to the REAL issues, not these manufactured lies.

This stuff is all being parsed out there to create divisions between average citizens all because controversy sells, particularly between these three rather homogenous panders. Regardless who wins in November, we, the people, have to demand honest, accountable government; a clean environment, safe, healthy food, alternative energy, a FDA and EPA not run by the special interest industries and compnies that they are supposed to regulate,a military that is best equiped, is safe on the battlefield, properly, compassionately and respectfully cared for upon their return; stabilizing Social Security, improving public schools; and, implementing economic policies which enable America to once again lead the world in technology development and production. Or, am I missing something? Do we really need our Presidential politics turned into tabloid taudr-ness. Focus people, Focus!

Will someone please explain to me how he would be able to pledge his allegiance to TWO COUNTRIES? There's something strange going on here...more than what his pastor said.

If the Hillary supporters want to beat McCain, and Hillary somehow wins the nomination, you'd better stop mocking the Obama supporters. *I* think the video is doctored, but the way the Hillary supporters behave, I expect this kind of thing from her camp and it lends credibility to these sort of attacks.

Punch myself in the face for a couple hours? If McCain wins the presidency because you're so desperate to humiliate and attack anyone that doesn't fall in line like a zombie, you'll be a perfect candidate for your own advise.

As for dirty tricks, the Obama/muslim thing came out the Hillary camp for those with selective memories and there is no evidence that Obama's campaign had any hand in this leak of this video.

However, for the second remark, "worhtless white ni*****s" is clearly mistaken. I've listened to it a few times with a good pair of headphones and the sound amplified. He does not say "white ni*****s" but clearly "swipe Texas". The rest remains a mystery to me but clearly no racial slur there.

Peter Paul is an admitted cocaine distributer, an indicted SEC violator for stock manipulation, served jail time for fraud, was caught entering Canada using a dead man's identity, and has been fighting the Clintons since 2005.

Paul's fight against the Clinton's is on par with the judge suing the cleaners for $54 million over pants. Don't expect it to sink Hillary.

The media goes crazy for any hint of a story relating to Obama's pastor. People get all sensitive when Obama speaks straight about what is happening in America and again he gets hit by negative spins.
The Clintons are repeatedly involved in issues that disrespect the American people, such as Mickey Kantor's racism, the Paul vs Clinton corruption case, continually out right lying to the people and trying to change the rules to benefit them. They lack the integrity demanded by the top job in the country. Obama has vision and is honest, he can change what is ailing America!

From ABC news:

When "The War Room" came out other folks interpreted Kantor to be impugning Indiana residents.

In The Washington Post's review of the film in 1993, critic Desson Howe referred to "a Mickey Kantor comment about the people of Indiana (when it looks as though Clinton's ahead in Dan Quayle's state)."

And a 1995 story in the Sydney Morning Herald said that "As for the good folk of Indiana, they are still recovering from the 1993 documentary War Room, which revealed the grim truth behind the Clinton election campaign. It showed Mr Kantor bursting in on election night to tell other campaign staffers that incredibly, Mr Clinton was doing well even in Republican Indiana. 'And those people are s---!' he declared breathlessly."

Facts are a stubborn thing. Obama cannot close his 20 year old relationship with Wright because there is so much video evidence against it. On the TV program THE VIEW, Obama declared that Reverend Wright accepted that his view were inappropriate and mischaracterized. That it had offended many people. Then weeks later Wright goes on a national Hate America Press Tour? This was a blatant lie. Or worse, Obama was fooled by Wright which is kind of scary. That a possible next president can be played by a character such as Wright. Check the video evidence yourselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6J7yJ9R5p0

HILLARY 'TOWN HALL' TO BE HOSTED BY EX-CLINTON STAFFER STEPHANOPOULOS
Thu May 01 2008 17:25:20 ET

Just hours before the Indiana and North Carolina presidential primaries, ABCNEWS has offered to air a 'town hall' meeting with Hillary Clinton -- to be hosted by former Clinton staffer George Stephanopoulos!

Embracing and racing through a brave new era of journalism, it is not clear if ABCNEWS will inform viewers of Stephanopoulos's past employment.

Stephanopoulos helped run Mr. Clinton's first presidential election campaign and acted as his press secretary and advisor on policy and strategy before joining ABC NEWS.

An executive at a rival network mocked, "We look forward to ABC holding the next town hall meeting with President Bush, hosted by Karl Rove!"

ABC will air the hour-long Hillary forum live from Indianapolis on Sunday.

"George has interviewed all the candidates time and time again and has put tough but fair questions to each," said a network spokesman. "Expect the same on Sunday."

The network hit controversy last month over the decision to allow Bill Clinton's former press secretary to moderate a debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama -- without any disclaimer.

Obama is scheduled to appear on NBC'S MEET THE PRESS, where he is expected to receive a traditional grilling by host Tim Russert.

http://www.twango.com/media/thepolitico.public/thepolitico.10042

He clearly says "How would you like to be" and the questionable "worthless" part is whispered. Why did he WHISPER? We know when people whisper it's because they dont' want to be heard.

Why was Kantor whispering? Look at the video, he pulls away from the camera to say something. Why? If he didn't say the "worthless" part, then what did he say?

I saw the link in CC's blog. I've googled it, and linked to Sam Stein/Huffington Post and Ben Smith/Politico. I even shopped for the DVD. There's a version of Pt. 9 of The War Room on YouTube in which Kantor does NOT appear to be talking about Hoosiers. In the viral version, he clearly WAS talking about Hoosiers. Now the original movie reviewer says he WAS talking about Hoosiers. That makes me think the Pt. 9 version might be doctored after all.

There's a story here. Good to see the Net version of WaPo get on it -- after two hours.

Uhh, sorry, there's no question about what longtime Hillary friend Mickey Kantor thinks about Indianans in that video. Any attempt to say otherwise is pure spin. Kind of like dodging sniper fire in Tuzla.

Obama is losing! And this is NOT going to change it. It will only hurt Obama further! This Pull the Race Card.... HOAX! Americans have had enough of Obama being the victim! It is Americans who have fallen victim to this fraud.

Obama also wrote, IN HIS OWN WORDS, about his own cocaine use.

What a HOAX to try and take away the REAL issue that is negatively effecting Obama. Obama not only followed Wright for 20 YEARS, but wrote books, HIS OWN WORDS, that clearly show that Wright had influence over him. They are deragotory toward white Americans, "his mother's race" and continues throughout both books. He also states his preference for his father "son of Africa". What about America, Obama?? Read them! And they are REAL and HIS WORDS. Not Wright's and not you tube baloney! His own words and one book self titled by an "inspired sermon" by Wright, The Audacity of Hope.
