Obama Adviser Tied to Hamas Meetings Resigns

By Glenn Kessler
An informal Middle East adviser to Sen. Barack Obama's campaign resigned Friday after a newspaper reported on his regular meetings with members of the Hamas militant group.

Rob Malley said he wanted to stop being a distraction for the campaign after facing attacks from the blogosphere for months for allegedly being anti-Israel, a charge he denies. Malley is a former National Security Council aide to President Bill Clinton who is now with the International Crisis Group, a nonpartisan conflict-resolution think tank.

Malley's departure comes at a sensitive time for Obama, who appears to be nearing the Democratic nomination but has struggled to win the support of Jewish and pro-Israel voters. Hamas, which won Palestinian legislative elections in 2006, refuses to recognize Israel and is dedicated to its destruction.

In reporting analytic reports he wrote for ICG, Malley would interview Hamas officials, as well as Israeli, American, European and other Palestinian officials. The reports, which made clear he had met with Hamas, feature recommendations for key players in the peace process. Malley said he informed the State Department before he met with Hamas and then briefed State afterwards on what he had learned.

"To do my job, I have to meet with savory and unsavory people," he said.

But Malley said that after he fielded a call this morning from the Times of London, which asked about the Hamas meetings, he decided he had had enough. "This was a distraction for me; this was a distraction for them," he said Friday night. "It is absurd, but that is what this campaign is about."

Malley decribed himself as an informal adviser who disagrees with Obama "on many things" regarding the Middle East, but he knew a lot of people in the Illinois senator's campaign and so from "time to time would offer advice they were free to disregard."

"Mr. Malley has, like hundreds of other experts, provided informal advice to the campaign," said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor. "He has no formal role in the campaign and he will not play any role in the future."

As a Vietnam Veteran (Captain with the 82nd Airborne 1968-70), I applaud John McCain's courage and patriotism. Those who don't are blind to the strength of character required to face combat. This, however, doesn't mean that he would make a good President. Simply because he showed courage 35 years ago doesn't mean that he can deal with today's complex issues. There's a reason the retirement age is 65. When the phone rings at 3am telling us of a possible 9/11 attack, I don't want a sleepy septuagenerian on the line.

Yeah, just the facts. Jerry Kiley also led "Vietnam Veterans Against John Kerry." He's an MIA activist who thinks the NV are still holding Americans or the remains of Americans over there. He's an equal opportunity bigot.

Look for the complete and devastating distraction of John Mccain over the next months. Come November he will be lucky to get 30% of the vote. Hell, he lost 25% to guys who aren't even running anymore in the last few primaries.

FACT SHEET: Military record of John Sidney McCain III
Both McCain III's father and grandfather were Admirals in the United States Navy. His father
Admiral John S. "Junior" McCain was commander of U.S. forces in Europe - later commander of
American forces in Vietnam while McCain III was being held prisoner of war. His grandfather
John S. McCain, Sr. commanded naval aviation at the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.
McCain III, like his father and grandfather, also attended the United States Naval Academy.
McCain III finished near the bottom of his graduating class in 1958.

McCain III lost five U.S. Navy aircraft
1 - Student pilot McCain III lost jet number one in 1958 when he plunged into Corpus
Christi Bay while practicing landings.
2 - Pilot McCain III lost another plane two years later while he was deployed in the
Mediterranean. "Flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula, he took out some power lines
which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the
son of an admiral.
3 - Pilot McCain III lost number three in 1965 when he was returning from flying a Navy
trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game. McCain III radioed, "I've got
a flameout" and ejected at one thousand feet. The plane crashed to the ground and
McCain III floated to a deserted beach.
4 - Combat pilot McCain III lost his fourth on July 29, 1967, soon after he was assigned to
the USS Forrestal as an A-4 Skyhawk combat pilot. While waiting his turn for takeoff, an
accidently fired rocket slammed into McCain Jr's. plane. He escaped from the burning
aircraft, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors, destroyed at least 20 aircraft,
and threatened to sink the ship.
5 - Combat pilot McCain III lost a fifth plane three months later (Oct. 26, 1967) during his
23rd mission over North Vietnam when he failed to avoid a surface-to-air missile. McCain
III ejected from the plane breaking both arms and a leg in the process and subsequently
parachuted into Truc Bach Lake near Hanoi. After being pulled from the lake by the North
Vietnamese, McCain III was bayoneted in his left foot and shoulder and struck by a rifle
butt. He was then transported to the Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the Hanoi Hilton.

1973 New York Daily News labeled POW McCain III a "PW Songbird"
On McCain III's fourth day of being denied medical treatment, slapped, and threatened with
death by the communist (they were demanding military information in exchange for medical
treatment), McCain III broke and told his interrogator, "O.K., I'll give you military information if you
will take me to the hospital." U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former
POW John McCain.
It was then that the communist learned that McCain III's father was Admiral John S. McCain,
the soon-to-be commander of all U.S. Forces in the Pacific. The Vietnamese rushed McCain III to
Gai Lam military hospital (U.S. government documents), a medical facility normally unavailable
for U.S. POWs.
By Nov. 9, 1967 (U.S. government documents) Hanoi press was quoting McCain III describing
his mission including the number of aircraft in his flight, information about rescue ships, and the
order of which U.S. attacks would take place.
While in still in North Vietnam's military hospital, McCain III gave an interview to prominent
French television reporter Francois Chalais for a series titled Life in Hanoi. Chalais' interview with
McCain III was aired in Europe.
Vietnamese doctors operated on McCain's Leg in early December, 1967.
Six weeks after he was shot down, McCain was taken from the hospital and delivered to a
U.S. POW camp,
In May of 1968, McCain III allowed himself to be interviewed by two North Vietnamese
generals at separate times." May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain
In August 1968, other POWs learned for the first time that John McCain III had been taken
prisoner.
On June 5, 1969, the New York Daily News reported in a article headlined Reds Say PW
Songbird Is Pilot Son of Admiral, " . . . Hanoi has aired a broadcast in which the pilot son of
United States Commander in the Pacific, Adm. John McCain, purportedly admits to having
bombed civilian targets in North Vietnam and praises medical treatment he has received since
being taken prisoner . . ." The Washington Post explained McCain III's broadcast: "The English-
Language broadcast beamed at South Vietnam was one of a series using American prisoners. It
was in response to a plea by Defense Secretary Melvin S. Laird, May 19, that North Vietnam treat
prisoners according to the humanitarian standards set forth by the Geneva Convention."
In 1970, McCain III agreed to an interview with Dr. Fernando Barral, a Spanish psychiatrist
who was living in Cuba at the time.
The meeting between Barral and McCain III (which was photographed by the Vietnamese)
took place away from the prison at the office of the Committee for Foreign Cultural Relations in
Hanoi (declassified government document). During the meeting, POW McCain sipped coffee and
ate oranges and cakes with the Cuban.
While talking with Barral, McCain III further seriously violated the military Code of Conduct by
failing to evade answering questions "to the utmost of his ability" when he, according government
documents, helped Barral by answering questions in Spanish, a language McCain had learned in
school. The interview was published in the in January 1970.

McCain III was released from North Vietnam March 15, 1973
In 1993, during one of his many trips back to Hanoi, McCain asked the Vietnamese not to
make public any records they hold pertaining to returned U.S. POWs. McCain III claims, that
while a POW, he tried to kill himself.

McCain III was awarded "medals for valor" equal to nearly a medal-and-a-half for each
hour he spent in combat
For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded
McCain III, the son of famous admirals, a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished
Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a
dozen service medals.
"McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat," explains Bill Bell, a veteran of Vietnam and former
chief of the U.S. Office for POW/MIA Affairs -- the first official U.S. representative in Vietnam
since the 1973 fall of Saigon.
"Since McCain got 28 medals," Bell continued, "that equals to about a medal-and-a-half for
each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys -- grunts on the ground -- who had more
than 7,000 hours in combat and I can tell you that there were times and situations where I'm sure
a prison cell would have looked pretty good to them by comparison. The question really is how
many guys got that number of medals for not being shot down."
For years, McCain has been an unchecked master at manipulating an overly friendly and
biased news media. The former POW turned Congressman, turned U.S. Senator, has managed
to gloss over his failures as a pilot and his collaborations with the enemy to become America's
POW-hero presidential candidate.

The problem with your post is, you can't deny what has been said about Mccain is not true. He is no more a hero then every other guy who has served. The difference is, he has tried to make a career of it. Truth is, without his father-in-law buying him a political career he would just be a drunk somewhere if he would even still be alive. The guy is a mental case and the last guy would want in the white house. He is I am sorry to say a phony.

Y'all notice that, on any article about the race for the Dem Presidential nomination, the majority of posted comments (and certainly the most emotional) come from the far fringe of the right wing...people that would never ever even consider the possibility of perhaps voting for a Dem?

On this string particularly, seems to be an inordinate number of amazingly similar posts (same language, grammar, syntax and vitriolic spewing of the same tired untruths) from a bunch of never-before-seen names.

It would seem that person might more profitably spend time trying to come up with a reason to vote for the Republican, despite his or her distaste for McCain's historical position on immigration, campaign finance, the religious right, cooperation with the Liberal Enemy, and taxes equal to spending (of course he's trying to repudiate those, especially the last, but we all understand).

Overall, I'm not entirely dissatisfied with what's happened so far. The Rs managed to nominate their only candidate who stood a chance, and I like having the option. In fact, could see myself voting for any of the three survivors (Clinton still, barely surviving).

Positions on free trade and civil liberties push me to McCain, but that's offset by his total lack of realism on Iraq, willful ignorance on healthcare issues, and analysis of each candidate's fiscal plans showing McCain's promotes the largest amount of deficit spending (my major national domestic issues are Fiscal Responsibility, Civil Liberties, Free Trade, and Healthcare).

Notwithstanding the irrelevancy of the last two and the next two months (can we just fast-forward please?), September and October are going to be interesting. Most likely November outcome is a D win, comfortable if it's Clinton (because she has a cap on support), wider if it's Obama.

Eye-Popping Survey By ccAdvertising

It appears that Barack Obama's self-inflicted negative publicity is having an effect on his chances at the Presidency. He may be doing strong in the Democrat Party, but the following survey shows he is not doing so well with the electorate at large.

From May 1, 2008 through May 5, 2008, ccAdvertising completed a survey to a combined total of 90,000 homes in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania (10,000 homes from each state) extracted from the ccAdvertising database.

This survey compared John McCain, the presumptive Republican Nominee for President against Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the final contestants in the race for the Democrat nomination for President. Combined results from respondents to this survey show:

John McCain Versus Hillary Clinton:

John McCain = 40.98%
Hillary Clinton = 42.04%
No Preference = 16.98%

John McCain Versus Barack Obama:

John McCain = 45.90%
Barack Obama = 40.42%
No Preference = 13.68%

I doubt Obama wanted to personally cut ties to him as an informal adviser, but when you have idiots who are still convinced that he is a Muslim and was taught by extremists, then you have to take drastic measures to make yourself look as squeaky clean as possible.

Malley got CLEARANCE FROM THE STATE DEPARTMENT. It was part of his job description to talk to Hamas, in addition to other foreign groups. I guess that's what happens when you work in an agency called the International CRISIS Group.

All the ignorant commenters here should realize that it's not like he was having tea with them and formulating plans to eliminate Israel.

This is typical of baby boomer politics of today. If you can't debate the issues of a candidate, attack his character in anyway possible. Associate him with someone in the past whether it be 5 years, 15 years even 25 years after the facts. Personally, as a baby boomer myself, I am glad to see the reins of political power being turned over to the X'ers. It appears to me that they are thinking a lot like the boomers of the 60's, when we had ideals that weren't so synical!

Say states and Puerto Rico left to vote, thank you for now recognizing Hillary for her strengths, not her gender or race. Remember, it is not too late, despite what the pundits, etc. are saying. Let's save America the land that we love not, necessarily the Democratic Party. If Hillary doesn't get the nomination please either encourage her to start a new party or, if she must remain loyal to the Democrat Party that has thumped her and Bill, write-in her name on the ballot. She may very well win if we all do just do that. Also, as soon as I vote in the KY primary on May 20th, I'm going to go directly and change from a life-long Democrat (55) to Independent. I have had it with our Party. Rise, Hillary, Rise and stay in to the end because Obama will be exposed for the real "empty and dangerous suit" he is. Keep the faith Hillary supporters. We can still do this and save America the land we love, not the Democratic Party.

Obviously, there is something about Obama's foreign policy positions -- and his advisors -- that Hamas finds attractive, thereby prompting its spokesman to proclaim that the terrorist organization "likes" Obama and wants him to be president. I know that Obama did not seek Hamas's "endorsement", but I have to wonder why Hamas "likes" Obama's positions, especially when I read the articles and comments posted on pro-Obama websites like the Daily Kos and HuffPost. There's a lot of Israel hatred there, including individuals who would love to see Israel as a Jewish state destroyed.

Senator Obama's relationship with Mr. Malley has been the subject of discussion in the Jewish press for months. Finally it goes mainstream! But will reporters follow up by asking Senator Obama to answer serious questions? Here are some questions that Senator Obama should answer.

(1) How did Mr. Malley become involved in your campaign and what was his roll?

(2) Your relationship with Mr. Malley has been a matter of public controversy for several months. What steps did you take to handle this controversy? Did you speak with Mr. Malley or inquire about his views and activities?

(3) Who do you consider to be your primary foreign policy advisers?

(4) Which of Mr. Malley's views do you agree or disagree with? Could you explain your position on these issues? (Insert list of issues).

Will the press ask these questions?

"I think it is time already to talk about Mccains cowardice as he denounced his own country while in captivity and ratted out his own fellow prisoners'

when Did mccain denounce the USA? was it after extreme torture on a broken body?

Obama and his nasty wife denounce America after attending the most prestigous schools in America! They are tortured by having the federal govt pay for their education.
their life is hard, hard , hard.
imagine, having to carry their own books, and what's worse, only making 4 million a year. It's SOOOOOOO UNNNN_FAIRRRRRRRRRR!

America would welcome a Black president - one with a brain that's not a media creation.
Sadly, the CORPORATE media and Washington establishment have foisted another empty suit on the American people who allow the CORPORATE MEDIA to shape their opinions.

Obama is a con.

An Obama supporter and spokesperson for the Dem Party said on national TV - working class whites and Hispanics are no longer needed in the Dem Party.
The Dem Party is now the Obamacrat Party comprised of the wealthy, the young, and blacks.

The wealthy and young don't need or want affordable health care - so with Oblahma we can kiss health care reform good-bye!

As loyal Dems sick of the Washington establishment of Pelosis, Kennedys and Kerrys picking another loser just to keep a woman out of the WH- we'll vote for McCain.
Go Hillary!

Obama is contradicting himself! Fires a guy for meeting with Hamas yet says he will sit down with Iran!!!
Who is he kidding?!

Posted by: zazzlin | May 10, 2008 8:18 AM | Report abuse

Obama is an America media creation - an empty suit propped up by the Washington establishment.
So - naturally we wouldn't expect the American media to publish this unless the folks across the pond exposed it.

If the Establishment thought Obama would "change Washington" - they wouldn't be supporting him.
Yet another Obama scam!

The media sold us empty suit Bush in 2000 - and now Oblahma.

I'm sorry to believe that the several thinly-veiled bigoted messages on here are merely a sign of what we should expect out of the GOP and a 'new southern strategy.'

"No wonder Hamas supports an Obama presidency." -- Posted by: Uneven Steven | May 9, 2008 11:18 PM

McCain wants the voters to consider carefully Hamas' opinion?
McCain wants the voters to consider the opinion of a group he denounces?
McCain wants the voters to consider the opinion of a group whose judgment is they can achieve their goals through fanatical suicidal violence?

McCain wants the voters to consider some very strange things.

Next we will find Obama got most of his funding from the middle east funneled through his brothers in Dearborn, MI and Farrakhan

Um, Sherry Kay, I don't think I'd be talking about plants if I were you. Kinda makes you think about the Manchurian Candidate, and I don't think that's something John McCain wants America to think about. Every time I see the man do one of those photo ops in Iraq, I expect him to surrender to the first Iraqi he meets, renounce America, then sell us out for an extra bowl of rice.

Y'know, Barack might call John McCain as a war hero, but I don't. McCain survived, period. He spat on America when signed his captor's letter. He couldn't be bothered to help his fellow POW's when he became a senator. He's a traitor.

I intend to treat McCain's service with the same respect the GOP accorded John Kerry's service. Of course, the big difference between the two is that John Kerry actually is a war hero. But Republicans never could tell the difference between someone in a flight suit playing a war hero and a real one, could they?

Thinking more along the lines of a Colin Powell,...now there, that's a man of color that can assume the White House. As for Mr. O., well, that ship is taking on water fast, and come fall she'll be settling below the horizon..

Kind of like a police officer being discredited because he spends a lot of time with criminals. I guess based on that kind of thinking any foreign diplomat must be foreign agents. After all they spend time in those countries.

No wonder Hamas supports an Obama presidency. They figure that after meeting with his adivors, they'll have an in and he'll be more likely to side with them in negotiations with Israel over controversial issues like the right to return and the final status of Jerusalem.

Steve Charb-You like misreporting facts huh?

In other words, You like looking Dumb, Huh?

Mitt referred to his Father, in a Figurative sense, Although, I believe his Father did actually participate as well.

Then, A Mister Saenz was the Landscaping Contractor Mitt Romney Hired to do his Lawn.

Even as an ACTING Governor, which Mitt was not, he had ZERO Right, or Authority, to verify Saenz's EMPLOYEES legal Status. He would have required Federal Authority to do so. It could be obtained, after training and due commissioning, but alas, Mitt had other things to do(Like trying to become the President to get Federal Authorities out checking on Landscapers and Construction Crews!). Which is, the Presidents job!-Someone tell Bushie! ;~)

It is the lack of Federal Officials handling THEIR Duties, that can ultimately can be blamed on Congress NOT appropriating funding(When, at $1,000/Pop(Or, Mamacita-if the case) would easily pay for itself!).

Finally, I WANT a Politician who REPRESENTS his CONSTITUENTS, and is willing to Change a Stance if the People want it, or if he is shown a better option.

THAT, in a Nut-Shell, is MY "Pelosi" with Juan McAmnesty, and HIS Crazy in the Head Notion, it is the "Juan McAmnesty Show".

SIMPLY put; What part of we said: "NO AMNESTY MAC", doesn't he understand?
