Obama Faults McCain on Lobbyist Influence

By Matthew Mosk
BILLINGS, Mont. -- Sen. Barack Obama accused Republican Sen. John McCain of running a presidential campaign bought and paid for by lobbyists, and criticized him for waiting more than a year before addressing the conflicts of several key advisers.

During a speech at a local high school here, Obama said voters should be concerned that "after nearly three decades in Washington, John McCain can't see or won't acknowledge what's obvious to all of us here today -- that lobbyists aren't just part of the system in Washington, they're part of the problem."

"The fact is, John McCain's campaign is being run by Washington lobbyists and paid for with their money," Obama said. "Senator McCain has been a candidate in this race for more than a year, but it was only in the past few days, when stories surfaced publicly about his lobbyist aides and their clients, that Senator McCain took any action to curb their roles."

The remarks were Obama's sharpest to date on a subject that has put McCain on the defensive. Obama first waded into the discussion yesterday, following McCain's decision to remove several lobbyists from his campaign over the past week and questioning the Republican senator's judgment. That brought a pointed response from McCain aides, who said in an e-mail to reporters, "If Barack Obama is going to make associations the issue, we look forward to the debate about Senator Obama's associations and what they say about his judgment and readiness to be commander in chief."

They then noted that, "Just a few years ago when Barack Obama was beginning his career in politics he was launching it at the home of William Ayers, an unrepentant domestic terrorist who his chief strategist said Senator Obama was certainly friendly with."

Obama, in turn, sharpened his comments on the issue, telling the crowd here that one of McCain's advisers had been lobbying for big energy companies, and that two others had done work "for the military regime that's stopping aid from getting into Burma."

"And just yesterday, Senator McCain's national finance co-chair had to resign after it was revealed that he lobbied Senator McCain and others on behalf of the government of Saudi Arabia," he said, eliciting boos. "I'm glad Senator McCain is taking these steps. But it's noteworthy that two of the most influential corporate lobbyists in Washington have taken time off to run his campaign. And they are still at the helm today."

I look forward to the debates between Obama and McCain. McCain has already gotten many of his "facts" on Iran and Iraq wrong. Meanwhile, Obama's extensive knowledge of history, global culture and constitutional law will help him soar over McCain in any debate. And Obama has the right type of intuition and sense of morality. McCain might have been a POW, but that doesn't mean he has what it takes to be president. He almost seems senile at times.
Go Obama.
Repubs, Independents and Dems ALL for Obama.
Yes, we can.

"McCain":

As your namesake would know, John SIDNEY McCain "accepted" Barack HUSSEIN Obama's offer re: public financing the very next day. It is Obama who is trying to back out of the deal now.

I have no idea why (or, even IF) Republicans make the emotional argument about McCain being a POW as an automatic qualifier for him -- I am registered Independent myself -- therefore, I asked John those POW questions because HE was making fun of McCain not being able raise his hands above his shoulders. Next canard?

Dear Fellow Americans,

Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is facing and will face very critical and substantial
"Challenges" in coming, months, years, and next
decade[s].

It is very essential as well as critical that we pick
our next
President keeping in mind the following criteria.

1. A candidate who has a clear and candid " Vision
and Mission" for our Nation.

2. A candidate with " Strong Character and Stable
Integrity" in-spite of adversity during our present
election process.

3. A candidate with sound and sustained
"Presidential Temperament" and " Judgment".

4. A candidate with little "Washington exposure"
and "real connectedness with people and future
generation".

5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than
"Tears us Down".

6. A candidate not based on sexism,
racism, regionalism, and ageism and as well as "
attempts to bring us together "

In my professional, political and personal opinion,
the only candidate that meets the all above
characteristics and has shown constant and consistent
coolness, calmness, and connectedness { PRESIDENTIAL
TEMPERAMENT } is Senator Barrack Obama.

As an independent registered voter since 1980. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,
and second Bush in 2000 and In the process last
interest in Washington politics and I stopped voting.
Getting disinterested and disgusted in our political
process and stopping voting that was a very bad
decision in any circumstance, particularly under
present circumstances.

This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let "Washington" stay the same.We can not afford our
Greatgreat Nation to become less than what we are,
what we were and what we can be?

We need to send clear, careful and candid message to
the world and some time 24 hour partisan divisive
media,
that WE the American people will set the agenda for
our future and America will be back.

These partisan media outlets are trying to deprive,
dupe, and derail us and our Nation in getting it right
this time. We not let it happen this time or in
future.

Some of these partisan media and pundits are trying
their best
to deny us better future and continue focus our
weaknesses and generate bitter future for us and our
Greatgrand Nation. { Our Greatgrand Nations people
are persistently and constantly subjected to this
Psychological Terrorism" without common people's
knowledge. The
common and regular people do not have time to see
thru and sort thru this psychological terrorism
perpetuated
by some of these partisan media outlets. I find it
tragic, unfortunate, and sad [ Probably they do not
care about our Greatgrand Nation ].

We the Americans should not and would not to allow
Some these partisan media outlets psychologically
terrorized, traumatized and silence us this time or
any time in future.

I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President.

Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, friends,fellowships, faith, funds,foundation,
fun, and future with fairness and freedom and without
fear, favor, or failure .

We can not afford to lose any of above. Let us stand
up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand Nation for
centuries to come and regain our world economic,
moral, and power status back.

God Bless our Great grand Nation and its diverse
people.

Our Greatgrand nation needs present and future
stability, security, safety,sustained progress and
restoration of our due status in this perilous Global
World at the all levels.

Why would Obama or any other candidate want public financing when he is doing much better through internet contribution and not making it a tax burden on the American public? No one including Obama expected the success they've had raising money. The reason McCain and GOP are having such a problem with it, is because the Republican brand is so damaged, they can't generate the amount of money Obama can and are afraid they won't be as competetive.

Ayers was a "terrorist" 40 years ago, he is now a well respected college professor, while McCain's lobbyist/advisers are still servicing questionable clients. Of course McCain didn't know about the problem, until the media brought it up. He's used to doing deals to help his wealthy friends. Look up the recent land swap to help his donors get govt land ready for development, Keating five, or his forced relocation of over 12,000 Native Americans to give the coal rights to his big coal buddies.

Barack HUSSEIN Obama did agree to accept public financing and then changed his position to what you've described ("I am getting TRUE public financing" and USA Today OpEd backtracking). You don't have to believe me though:

"Obama replied 'yes' in September 2007 when asked if he would agree to public financing of the presidential election if his GOP opponent did the same. His spokesman now says that he never gave such a pledge, and Obama himself has attached several conditions, including regulating spending by outside groups."

Obama is a fraud.
1. Not respecting the national anthem/American flag is a gigantic disrespect to everyone in American history. I do not care if he is ashamed of what America has become because of the war in Iraq. Obama is free to expatriate if he is ashamed of America. I'll even buy his plain ticket.
2.Associating with very suspicious characters (Ayers/Wright, etc.) should make everyone in America suspicious about Obama's judgement of character.
3. Obama threw is Grandma under a bus after the Reverend Wright scandal when he should addressed the issue at hand: Rev. Wright. He should have said, "Rev. Wright was wrong, I'm sorry if he offended anyone, I do not agree with him, so let's move on..." But instead, he chose to embarrass his grandma. Oh, Obama, if you were my grandkid I would pinch your ear and give you a good slap in the kisser.
4. After he claimed he could not denounce his so called spiritual mentor, a mere two months later he denounces Wright for giving him bad PR. Sound to me like Obama only wants to be around people that make him look good. I wonder if Grandma got on TV and stated her case about her racism if Obama would give her the boot in two months. Nah, maybe she'd get a couple extra days, since she actually is family...

Hope? Change? Obama is a crooked politician, and folks that fall for his charisma and rhetoric and fail to realize that he is very vague about actual plans are just plain foolish.

And for anybody that thinks Obama deserves the presidency because of his color and that black people have been oppressed-Read your history books, people. Women have been oppressed since the beginning of time.

I personally would like to see a Clinton-McCain showdown. But I will probably have to hear Obama being whistful and articulate about his non-specific plans. Great. Bruce Springsteen is inspiring and charismatic--Let's all vote for him in 2012!

Also, there is a reason Obama is shifting his focus to discussing the war and trying to link McCain to Bush, and that is because it is the only way Obama will win. If he tries to attack McCain on anything else, people will realize that the war is the only thing particularly right-winged about McCain, since he is notorious for working together with Democrats. What's this?! A Republican that is willing to work with Democrats? It's unheard of! But yes, such a creature exists, and his name is John McCain. All of the Democrats that do not trust Obama, you can vote for McCain with a clean conscience.

When I think about Obama, I see someone whose words do NOT match up with his actions.
When I think about John McCain, a Vietnam veteran whose was tortured for years because he wouldn't sell out his fellow troops, I see someone with integrity.
I also see someone who will be willing to work with Democrats and Republican alike, so that things are more fair.

This country is the best country in the world because we are free to be and do what ever we want. This country does not need to change, rather, its people need to learn to compromise and cooperate with one another, and McCain can show us how it's done, and unlike Bush, he will know what to do with the war in Iraq and bring our troops home with dignity.

Posted by: JakeD | May 19, 2008 5:08 PM
--------------------------------------

Jake, get a clue. The public IS financing Obama's campaign. 1.5 million donors so far at an average of $96 per donation. THAT is public financing at it's best.

Posted by: suekzoo | May 19, 2008 5:26 PM | Report abuse

I am convinced that many who support Obama do so because they don't know much about him. Little by little, the press is reluctantly releasing more information, and the more we learn, the more we realize that he is NOT the candidate of "change" or "unity." He is, in fact, the exact opposite. For example, how can someone claim to be a "uniter" when their religion is based upon racism, i.e. black liberation theology. Here is a statement from James H. Cone, one of the founders of black liberation theology, about the nature of Obama's religion, and you tell me if it is consistent with "unification."

"Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community. Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love."

If all Americans understood even this single issue, then much of his support would dry up overnight.

JakeD:

Let me take a shot at the Rev. Wright association with Obama. There seems to be an assumption that Obama was in the pews for every Sunday service for 20 straight years. I think that's where part of your argument is flawed.

Rev. Wright became corrupted with attention, but the fervor in which CNN and especially FOX played the sermons were enough to paint Rev. wright as a villain and what Republicans seem to thrive on as someone who is anti-American. Rev Wright flat out changed from the person Obama knew 20 years ago. Wright took a role upon himself that he was going to be the great black communicator behind Obama. I think it's fair to say that Obama stayed naively loyal to him and was probably sensing that the angry black man persona that Rev. Wright and many black pastors allow themselves to get whipped up into, was not the image of the campaign.

For someone to be in your life that long, as Obama said, you want to give them the benefit of the doubt. Some of these comparisons should and could be made between McCain, Rev Falwell, Pastor Hagee and Rod Parsley with some of their "hate" speech.

Rev Wright felt justifiably attacked and instead of apologizing or recognizing what he was saying was utterly reprehensible, he clearly let his ego -- like a great majority of Christian leaders do that have a large congregation -- get in the way of common sense. That's not Obama's fault.

When Rev. Wright had a chance to take a step back, even though Hannity and Fox were playing his sermon non-stop on all their shows, including Cavuto which is a finance oriented show, Wright showed just how human and capable of erred judgement he was. His "performance" at the NPC was the straw and to me here's what ended the relationship:

1)He basically called Obama a two bit politician.

2)He threatend him "I'm coming after you" and because of Rev. Wright's ties to Farrakhan, some zealots very likely could have construed it as a similar message to kill Malcolm X.

I'm far more concerned about an unrepentant Charlie Black whose company represented an oppressing military junta that is killing off its own people for political propoganda and John McCain's association with Charles Keating who defrauded and ruined more lives than the rantings of a pastor. As much as you don't want to admit it, Rev. Wright has actually done some redeemable things in the community, but it doesn't excuse his diatribe.

If it were not for the lobbyist financing McCain's bid, he would have been broke a long time ago and out of this race. How many times has he ran for President as a Republican, he is a decorated war hero and he couldnt even defeat a draft dodger and definitely not the brightest President we ever had for the Republican nomination. Then GW embarrased him and his family in South Carolina and rubbed his nose in it. What does Maverick McCain do when he gets the nomination and chance to say FU to GW, he gets on a plane and flys to DC for a photo op with him. LOL

One way to get around campaign and finance reform, is to make sure you have a PRENUP with younger rich heiress wife, who benefits from your tax breaks, so you are protected and she can file her own taxes and you can fly for cheap on her daddy's company plane and say OH, I won't be disclosing my tax records publicly when she is trying to be First Lady, but I am Proud to be an American every day of my life. That's easy to do when you live off of daddy's company, and don't have to worry about filling up your car at $4.00

The real American Dream is Obama and his wife Michelle, no one gave it to them, they went out and earned it, and if people want to be inspired by something those are two people who worked hard and had faith in themselves and each other and look at what they have been able to do againt the Clinton name and legacy.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion Obamamama...just realize that by talking like how you are only makes you look bad. There are plenty of ways to get your point accross so that people actually LISTEN to what you have to say, rather than pass you off as a troll.

I'm not judging you...you are, as I said, of course entitled to think and say whatever you want. If you really want people to take your message seriously, however, I suggest you find a different way to share it.

Back on topic, does anyone else want to discuss whether Sen. Obama will now abide by his pledge to accept public financing for the general election campaign?

Posted by: JakeD | May 19, 2008 5:08 PM | Report abuse

Your light is a train:

Here is an article from last month. Add it up. Just the amount received from bundlers who gave the maximum $2,300 each equals over $62,000,000, and that doesn't count any donations received by bundlers who gave less than the maximum. I know it's hard to face; it was hard for me, too, when I first found out.

ARTICLE ABOUT OBAMA, WHERE HE GETS HIS MONEY, AND THE FACT THAT HE HAS BEEN USING GEORGE BUSH/KARL ROVE TACTICS FROM THE BEGINNING (Please use the link below to read the whole article) -- The Washington Post -- April 11,2008 -- Obama gets plenty of money from big donors too: "Sen. Barack Obama credits his presidential campaign with creating a 'parallel public financing system' built on a wave of modest donations from homemakers and high school teachers. ... But those with wealth and power also have played a critical role in creating Obama's record-breaking fundraising machine, and their generosity has earned them a prominent voice in shaping his campaign. Seventy-nine 'bundlers,' five of them billionaires, have tapped their personal networks to raise at least $200,000 each. ... Donors who have given more than $200 account for about half of Obama's total haul, which stands at nearly $240 million. ... The bundler list also sheds light on those who might seek to influence an Obama White House. It includes traditional Democratic givers -- Hollywood, trial lawyers and Wall Street -- and newcomers such as young hedge fund executives, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Chicago-based developers and members of the black business elite." They have helped the campaign recruit more than 27,000 donors to write checks for $2,300, the maximum allowed. Donors who have given more than $200 account for about half of Obama's total haul, which stands at nearly $240 million. The use of bundlers was perfected by George W. Bush, who in 2000 and 2004 set some fundraising records that Obama has shattered. Bush established a competitive hierarchy of "Rangers" and "Pioneers," with tracking numbers to monitor fundraisers' progress and silver cuff links and belt buckles for high achievers.

Hey I've Seen The Light,

the things you state are not facts but utter lies. for example you write:

He has received upwards to $100,000,000 by PAC rules, but it's still special interest money.

a quick google search on this shows that your claim is false.

finally there's someone who wants to stand up against corporate america and lobbyist influence and all the nay-sayers can do is try to smear him. it's sad.

There is no more public financing then to to get donations of a $100 dollars or less from 1.5 million donors. You have to prove to them you are worth the risk. And Jakd how much would you bet that wright was preeching HATE and Anti American slurs for 20 years? You are so cock sure but would you put up $30,000 dollars let's say to prove how sure you are? Again, the GOP scurry about trying to find something to pin on Obama, or in the case of lapel flag pins, not pin on him!

Here's how the GOP sounds: blah, blah, blah, Rev. Wright, blah, blah, blah, Barak HUSSIEN Obama, blah, blah, blah, William Ayers, blah, blah, blah, supports terrorists, blah, blah, blah, non-patriotic, blah, blah, blah, not fit to be commander-in-chief, blah, blah, blah...

...While former US Generals and Military strategists from the Pentagon have endorsed Obama and have said he would lead this counrty BACK to the great position WE ONCE HAD in the world!

In the other corner we have McCain, who has decided to step out of the shadow of George Bush... just what this country needs! another 4 years of Bush and the republicans ruining our great nation. Has anyone in the GOP noticed the gas prices, home mortgage crisis, iraq as a new vietnam, a more destabilzed middle east, a stronger iran, a falling dollar, job loss to overseas factories, corporate and ceo scandal, Cheney's Halliburton lining its pockets from no-bid contracts with US tax dollars, outrageous deficit and trade debt, teachers underpaid under 'no childen left behind' or should i say 'no child left untested', outrageous costs for college education??? will any of GOP step up and tell me why I should vote for McCain under the history of the Bush Administration's last 8 years? I'm listening...

Shirl: If Obama is the Democratic nominee, he will again be fighting two battles at once. He will be fighting the Republicans, AND he will be fighting the millions of members of his own party who will never vote for him. It's going to be an uphill battle that he will likely lose.

What I find amazing in past twelve months of political rhetoric is that the only negative comments directed at Ron Paul were regarding his unwavering and consistent adherence to the US Constitution. They did not have anything negative to say about him, so they labeled him as 'crazy'.

Posted by: swansend | May 19, 2008 4:39 PM | Report abuse

I am a former Obama supporter. When he first came on the scene, he inspired me with his message of hope and change. Then, when I started finding out more about him, his armor started to rust. First, I realized that he was routinely dishonest about many things. He says he doesn't accept money from special interests, but then I found out that he uses the same fundraising method developed by Karl Rove for George Bush, called "bundling." This gets around the PAC rules, but it's still special interest money. He has received upwards to $100,000,000 by this method so far. Also, a friend of mine turned me on to the story of how he stabbed his friend and political mentor, Alice Palmer, in the back to gain his first office. The more I found out, the more he looked like the typical politician, except probably worse. Then, when I found out he attended a racist and anti-American church for 20 years, and considered the racist and anti-American pastor to be his "mentor and spiritual adviser," that was enough for me. Now, I will vote for Hillary Clinton, if she is the Democratic nominee, and if she is not, I will vote for John McCain. Obama, fool me once . . .

Obama is fighting two huge battles at the same time, with McCain attacking him and Hillary out to knock him off. Listen to her campaign appeal AGAIN TO WOMEN, using the gendered emotional language of abuse--"a slap in the face"--to get the women out to vote against him. AND we know Obama has been a gentleman throughout!! Hillary is moving the goalposts AGAIN--raising the numbers of delegates, saying that only certain votes count. Her attacks have created a climate of misery for all Democrats. The Party needs to declare victory for Senator Obama NOW in order to win in November. I hope the good people of Oregon REMEMBERED to mail in their votes for Obama!

Go Obama! Reveal how the "wheels have fallen off of the Straight Talk Express" over the past 7 years!

We all know what's coming for Obama over the next 5 or so months from McCain and the GOP, i.e. Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, and flag pins.

Once all the lobbyists in McCain's campaign are forced to leave McCain won't have very many senior people left.

As long as Obama focuses on the campaign themes that got him thus far along with his recommended policy fixes for the federal government, McCain will look like an older and dumber "GW Bush"!

Posted by: AJ | May 19, 2008 4:29 PM | Report abuse

What is McCain doing?? His best response is that stupid crap about Ayers? If the rest of the election goes like this last week for McCain its going to be an Obama blowout in Nov.

Posted by: Independent | May 19, 2008 4:26 PM | Report abuse

It's all fair game. McCain has based much of his appeal on his supposedly "clean" record on ethics and lobbyists (or at least since his last scandal...). With scores of advisers dropping away every week from his campaign due to their lobbyists ties, it presents a bad image. And a scenario where Obama can easily launch some barbs.

JakeD,

You ask why would Obama "remain a member of Rev. Wright's hateful church for 20 years?"

But I ask you, what makes you think you know anything about that church besides a few YouTube videos? For you to comment on the past 20 years of that church with such obvious knowledge of the facts, you must have been there every day to verify the hate, right?

Or no, have you just ASSUMED to know the facts? If I am to follow your logic... look at the HATE spewing forth from some of these Christian-Right fundamentalists, those MUST be the views of the Republicans who are now inseparable from that demographic, right???

I'd say it's time to leave religious leaders out of election news so we can focus better on the candidates themselves, yes?

When John McCain decided he wanted to go into politics, he started searching for people who could help him get there. One of those people was Phoenix-based banker Charles Keating, a friend of McCain's father-in-law who eventually became close friends with McCain.

Keating helped finance McCain's congressional campaigns over the years, giving McCain hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions and free plane rides. In return, McCain and four other Senators aided Keating as he embezzled millions of dollars of American taxpayer money.

John McCain and Charles Keating stole $3.4 BILLION from American taxpayers.

Please explain, in your professional, political or personal opinion, why a candidate with "Strong Character and Stable

This comment by Obamamama is so completely ridiculous. Either written by a right-winger trying to play on the fear mongering that the republican party has been trying to use against Barack (there is a c in there) over the last year or by somebody that obviously has never heard Obama speak.

I almost don't know where to start with my response; you are so far off the mark with your comments. Educate yourself. He speaks to us about breaking down racial and political divisions. He talks about overcoming past and present problems by coming together.

Barack has never said "GOD D*** America". Maybe you should listen to what the man says and believes, and stop forcing ignorant thoughts (and I use that term loosely) on others.

Dear Fellow Americans,

Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is facing and will face very critical and substantial
"Challenges" in coming, months, years, and decades to
come.

It is very essential that we pick out our next
President keeping in mind the following criteria.

1. A candidate who has a clear and candid " Vision
and Mission" for our Nation.

2. A candidate with " Strong Character and Stable
Integrity" in-spite of adversity during primary
election process.

3. A candidate with sound and sustained
"Presidential Temperament" and
" Judgment".

4. A candidate with little "Washington exposure"
and "real connectedness with people and future
generation".

5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than
"Tears us Down".

6. A candidate not based on sexism,
racism,regionalism,and ageism.

In my professional, political and personal opinion,
the only candidate who meets the all above
characteristics and has shown constant and consistent
coolness, calmness, and connectedness { PRESIDENTIAL
TEMPERAMENT } is Senator Barrack Obama.

As an independent registered voter since 1980. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,
and second Bush in 2000 and In the process last
interest in Washington politics and I
stopped voting. Getting disinterested and disgusted in
our political process and stopping voting that was a
bad decision in any circumstance, particularly under
present circumstances.

This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let "Washington" stay the same.We can not afford our
Greatgreat Nation to become less than what we are,
what we were and what we can be?

We need to send clear, careful and candid message to
the world and some time 24 hour partisan hateful media
to set the agenda for our future.

These partisan media outlets are trying to deprive,
dupe, and derail us and our Nation getting it right
this time.

These partisan media and pundits are trying their best
to deny us better future and continue focus our
weaknesses and generate bitter future for us and our
Greatgrand Nation. { Our Greatgrand Nations people
are persistently and constantly subjected to this
Psychological Terrorism" without our knowledge. The
common and regular people do not have time to see
thru
and sort thru this psychological terrorism perpetuated
by these partisan media outlets.

We the Americans should not and would not to allow
these partisan media outlets psychologically
terrorized, traumatized and silence us this time and
any time in future.

I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President.

Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, friends,fellowships, faith, funds,foundation,
fun, and future with fairness and freedom and without
fear or favor.
