Pelosi Comes Out Against Proposed Gas Tax Holiday

By Jonathan Weisman
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) lent her name to the growing chorus of Democrats opposed to a gasoline tax holiday proposed by Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain.

Pelosi said this afternoon that Congress will not consider a suspension of the 18-cent federal gas tax this summer.

"There is no reason to believe any moratorium on the gas tax will be passed on to consumers. That's first and foremost," she said. "Second, it will defeat everything we've tried to do to lower the cost of oil," noting that Democrats have been trying to shift the nation to alternative fuel sources, not promote gasoline consumption.

Hillary Clinton cannot pass anything without the blessing of congress and the president right now. She knows this but is using it to gain the "stupid" vote or as some might say the uneducated white vote. Come on people wake up!

Obama is worried about the price of arugula at Whole Foods while working Americans struggle to pay for health care, gas, and food! I guess the weak dollar is making it harder for him to afford Brie . . .

Obama is a liberal out of touch elitist. I'm just waiting for him to take up wind surfing or take a ride in a tank.

Queen Bee Pelosi had no idea.

By Clinton saying a windfall tax on oil companies would pay for her loony plan, she killed any possibility that it would ever pass in time for Memorial Day. Even if it did, Bush would never sign it.

Nancy Pelosi, is right in what she came out to say about the gas tax. What I would propose is simply this: l). Park your vehicles for one week 2). Use your public transportation for a week. Public tranportation would be cheaper that what McCain/Clinton is suggesting. If you do the above, the Oil Companies will lose. Just that simple. McCain/Clinton are PANDERING to all of us. Do Not vote for these two people (McCain/Clintons).

Pelosi is a consummate politician and will go with what helps her retain her position as Speaker of the House.

Posted by: Katherine | May 3, 2008 1:42 AM | Report abuse

Nancy Pelosi is right in what she said on the tax relief that McCain/Clinton is proposing. We the people will gain nothing with this proposal that McCain/Clinton is suggesting. Please DO NOT fall prey to the PANDERING. Remember, either candidate is not the President Yet. I am definately voting for Senator Obama. He has already been to my state ( South Carolina) and have proven that he is above the McCain/Clinton people. She says that he has not been VETTED enough. I think that with him running against three candidate (Clinton, Clinton, McCain) and their surrogates, he has surpassed all of them. I feel that he has been truly VETTED by all three people that he is running against. And all the while I thought that there are only TWO. And remember that Hillary has already said to "screw" them. Such words. But, then again she knows how to drink shots of "liquor and beer". Oops, SNIPERS are coming.

So Speaker Pelosi reiterates what every economist, expert, and editorial board has said - that his gas holiday proposal is a complete crock - and what do we see in response o these boards? Idiotic class warfare.

Here's a tip, folks. When everybody with more than half a brain agrees that something is a stupid idea and isn't going to work, maybe we should stop calling names, and listen. It's not going to save us more than a couple of bucks, it's going to royally screw up revenue to road projects we desperately need, and the oil companies are going to adjust ther prices to match. Even the people who claim to be for it are only saying so because they think it will get them votes. They don't think for a second it will actually work.

In short:

We. Are. Being. Played.

If the voting public falls for this ridiculous, simplistic pandering, we deserve the leadership we get.

Nancy Pelosi is just a rich woman born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She hasn't a clue what the working class people are up against. Most of the congressmen and woman have never held a real job. They are not in our SS# , they have their own which is protected so that it will be there when they need it. Which most of them won't . She spends too much on her face lifts and by they way how much more can they stretch that wrinkled up old hags face and reattach it . Obama wants to cut the tax's cuts and tax everyone with a new global tax. These jokers in congress and all the way down to the state lever need to all be thrown out and never should any of them be able to vote in pay increases for themselves. The american tax payers should be the one's to do that once every 4 yrs. Who ever heard of getting a raise when they are not doing the job voters told them to do. It's time to clean house and get their payroll down to our level. They are not worth a pot to #iss in.

There is no way for the government to determine if a reduction in federal gasoline taxes is passed on to consumers unless you adopt Nixon styled wage price controls.

Furthermore, the federal gasoline tax is small relative to the increase in prices over the last few years.

BTW a $30 savings is about right if you do the math:

12,000 average miles driven per vehicle per year or 3,000 during proposed summer gas tax holiday

3,000 / 21 average miles per gallon = 143 gallons of gas.

143 gallon * $0.184 federal gasoline tax = $26.13 in savings

Don't use facts or logic on these McClinton people, they don't care about no stinking facts.

Posted by: Boston | May 2, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

If you ake 18 cents off all summer and lose thousands of jobs and have insufficent money for highway repair what kind of sense does that make?

That is the same as paying a low fee on a credit card for a year while racking up a big debt. When the year is over you have pay the real interest rate on a big debt you can't afford.

Wake up! Get real! This is how we got into this mess.

Posted by: Val | May 2, 2008 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Do the math. Unless you drive a motorcycle 18 cents a gallon would far surpass Obama's $30 for the summer. And what would that mean? It could mean something a little extra to lift the spirits in these dispirited times - maybe even a movie for the kids or a special food at the store they had been avoiding because of cost. OR two more tanks of gas so they could get to work.

Senators Clinton and McCain did not propose it as a "fix" for the energy issue - but to give a little relief to working families.

Nancy Pelosi takes every opportunity to bash whatever Senator Clinton proposes.

While is true that growing China and India economies press on oil prices, the fact is that an economic crisis in this country leads to other countries crisis worldwide, so the demand would constrain and we'll see prices get down again. If not as much as we'd like, but in some level.

And it's surprinsing to see that despite high prices, still demand don't constrain. But it will do as economic crisis deepens

Posted by: Anonymous | May 2, 2008 11:36 AM | Report abuse

The main reason to high prices of gasoline lies in suply doesn't equal demand given the growht of China and india economies. So it not flattering potential voters and short term measures as the gas tax holidays you solve the problem. Much less the dependence on oil the country faces.

It's true it beats working people of lower incomes, but it is also true that it would increase consume of gasoline to those with higher incomes, which can lead to higher prices.

The time has long due: we ought to tighten our belts because we've abused of oil and gasoline consume. Otherwise, there are only two ways to hit the gasoline prices, new source of energy or decreasing demanding. Or both.

RAT-The - this information may be helpful for you. I eat a lot of spicy, greasy, and fried foods, and in the past - maybe half a year ago sometimes when i sit down for a long time i feel something wet and it's just like water - clear and has no color and I don't notice it until I feel it or see it on my pant leg. It smells awful, and last time I saw my doctor I told him about it. He looked and he said there's nothing wrong.
It started to bug me, because I would be at a resturaunt then after I sat for a long time and got up I would notice a poop smell it was like I was wetting my self, but from my butt.

I know that that the warts must be very uncomfortable for you.

I have heard that Olestra can do that, it is a product used in some potato chips which causes anal leakage.

Another possibility is that you could have IBS. I have cut and pasted an article I got of a proctological site, I hope the information helps. I would really go and see a doctor and get a more thorough exam. Obviously, if your Doctor is saying nothing is wrong he is mistaken. Here is the article:

Anal Seepage

What is anal seepage?

Anal seepage is a condition where mucus, blood and/or small amounts of feces may leak out of the anus into a person's undergarments. The leakage is generally small quantities, but it may occur intermittently thoughout the day. The leakage is not associated with an urge to defecate, but may cause uncomfortable itching in the anal area and embarrasing stains and odor. Anal seepage may be worse after eating certain foods that make the stools softer.

What causes anal seepage?

Anal seepage is usually associated with a disruption in the lining of the anus and/or rectum. The most common problems are internal hemorrhoids and rectal prolapse. Anal fissures and inflammatory bowel disease are also causes.

What should I do if I think I have this problem?

Tell your primary care physician about the problem. Hemorrhoids and fissures can sometimes be treated with simple, local therapy. A colorectal surgeon or urogynecologist can be consulted if necessary.

Hope you find out what is causing it soon. Good luck

Definition

Anal warts, also known as condyloma acuminata, are small warts that can occur in the rectum.

Description

Initially appear as tiny blemishes that can be as small as the head of a pin or grow into larger cauliflower-like protuberances. They can be yellow, pink, or light brown in color, and only rarely are painful or uncomfortable. In fact, infected individuals often are unaware that they exist. Most cases are caused by sexual transmission.

Most individuals have between one to 10 genital warts thtat range in size from roughly 0.5-1.9 cm2. Some will complain of painless bumps or itching, but often, these warts can remain completely unnoticed.

Causes and symptoms

Condyloma acuminatum is one of the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States. Young adults aged 17 to 33 years are at greatest risk. Risk factors include smoking, using oral contraceptives, having multiple sexual partners, and an early coital age. In addition, individuals who have a history of immunosuppression or anal intercourse are also at risk.

Roughly 90% of all anal warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) types 6 and 11, which are the least likely of over 60 types of HPV to become cancerous. Anal warts are usually transmitted through direct sexual contact with someone who is infected with condyloma acuminata anywhere in the genital area, including the penis and vagina. Studies have shown that roughly 75% of those who engage in sexual contact with someone infected with condyloma acuminata will develop these warts within three months.

Treatment

According to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the treatment of all genital warts, including anal warts, should be conducted according to the methods preferred by the patient, the medications or procedures most readily available, and the experience of the patient's physician in removing anal warts.

Treatment options include electrical cautery, surgical removal, or both. Warts that appear inside the anal canal will almost always be treated with cauterization or surgical removal. Surgical removal, also known as excision, has the highest success rates and lowest recurrence rates. Indeed, studies have shown that initial cure rates range from 63-91%.

Unfortunately, most cases require numerous treatments because the virus that causes the warts can live in the surrounding tissue. The area may seem normal and wart-free for six months or longer before another wart develops.

Electrocoagulation, a technique that uses electrical energy to destroy the warts, is usually the most painful of the procedures done to eliminate condyloma acuminata of the anus, and is usually reserved for larger warts. It is done with local anesthesia, and may cause discharge or bleeding from the anus.

Follow-up visits to the physician are necessary to make sure that the warts have not recurred. It is recommended that these patients see their physicians every three to six months for up to 1.5 years, which is how long the incubation period is for the HPV virus.

Carbon dioxide laser treatment and electrodesiccation are other options, but these are usually reserved for extensive warts or those that continue to recur despite numerous treatments. However, because HPV virus can be transmitted via the smoke caused by these procedures, they are usually reserved for the worst infections.

For small warts that affect only the skin around the anus, several medications are available, which can be applied directly to the surface of the warts by a physician or by the patients themselves.

Such medications include podophyllum resin (Podocon-25, Pod-Ben-25), a substance made from the cytotoxic extracts of several plants. This agent offers a cure rate of 20-50% when used alone, and is applied by the physician weekly and then washed off 6 hours later by the patient.

Podofilox (Condylox) is another agent, and is available for patients to use at home. It can be applied twice daily for up to 4 weeks. Podofilox offers a slightly higher cure rate than podophyllin, and can also be used to prevent warts.

Trichloroacetic and bichloroacetic acids are available in several concentrations up to 80% for the treatment of condyloma acuminata. These acids work to cauterize the skin, and are quite caustic. Nevertheless, they cause less irritation and overall body effects than the other agents mentioned above. Recurrence, however, is higher with these acids.

Bleomycin (Blenoxane) is another treatment option, but it has several drawbacks. First, it must be administered by a physician into each lesion via injection, but is can have a host of side effects, and patients must be followed carefully by their physician.

Imiquimod 5% cream is also available for patients to apply themselves. It is to be applied three times weekly, for up to 16 weeks, and has been shown to clear warts within eight to 10 weeks.

Finally, the interferon drugs, which are naturally occurring proteins that have antiviral and antitumor effects, are available. These include interferon alfa 2a and 2b (Roferon, Intron A), which are to be injected into each lesion twice a week for up to eight weeks.

Prognosis

Once a diagnosis of anal warts has been made, further outbreaks can be controlled or sometimes prevented with proper care. Unfortunately, many cases of anal warts either fail to respond to treatment or recur. Patients have to undergo roughly six to nine treatments over several months to assure that the warts are completely eradicated.

Recurrence rates have been estimated to be over 50% after one year and may be due to the long incubation of HPV (up to 1.5 years), deep lesions, undetected lesions, virus present in surrounding skin that is not treated.

Prevention

Sexual abstinence and monogamous relationships can be the most effective form of prevention, and condoms may also decrease the chances of transmission of condyloma acuminata. Abstinence from sexual relations with people who have anal or genital warts can prevent infection. Unfortunately, since many people may not be aware that they have this condition, this is not always possible.

Individuals infected with anal warts should have follow-up checkups every few weeks after their initial treatment, after which self-exams can be done.

Sexual partners of people who have anal warts should also be examined, as a precautionary preventive measure.

Finally, 5-flourouracil (Adrucil, Efudex, Fluoroplex) may be useful to prevent recurrence once the warts have been removed. Treatment must, however, be initiated within 1 month of wart removal.

Key Terms

Electrocoagulation
a technique using electrical energy to destroy the warts. Usually done for warts within the anus with a local anesthesia, electrocoagulation is most painful form of therapy, and can cause both bleeding and discharge from the anus.

Pelosi is right about one thing. We wouldn't see any of the tax cut showing up at the pump. Here's why, and the oil execs have admitted this in testimony before congress. They adjust the price of gas at the pump to influence the amount we demand. Their "bean counters" set prices so we'll buy almost all they can produce and at the cost that will keep us from wanting more than they can deliver. So - if the government eliminates 18 cents worth of tax, the oil companies will just keep raising their prices to compensate. Only with a tax cut, the oil companies will make even more profit. So, if we won't save anything, and the oil cos. will profit, please tell me how this makes any sense.

For those of you who think this case has been thrown out or is irrelevant:

"In the landmark civil fraud case against Bill Clinton in Los Angeles, where the former President is charged with defrauding a Hollywood dot com millionaire to help Hillary Clinton obtain more than $1.2 million from him for her 2000 Senate campaign, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aurelio Munoz ruled on Friday, April 25, 2008 that Hillary Clinton would not be required to testify in a sworn deposition as a material witness in the case until AFTER the November election!." (paulvclinton.com)
Here is the kicker - the judge is a Bill Clinton appointee!

Since the media is refusing to reveal/report the Paul vs Clinton fraud case in court right now, we need to create our own movement and flood every blog with information from the case.

For those that don't know - Google Paul vs Clinton and hold on to your shirt with what you read!!

What is wrong with people. We have more power than we realize in dealing with the high cost of gas. We can start by carpooling. We did it in the 70's when we were faced with the same problem. People traded their gas guzzlers in for compact cars. We need to take a page from the Montgomery bus boycott. When people stopped riding the bus it financially crippled the public transportation system. By the time it was over people could sit wherever they wanted. Sure it was an inconvenience, people were literally walking to work. Today, we look to the government to solve all our problems. We demand everything but we're not willing to give up anything. We need to organize, ban together, ride a bike, catch a bus, shuttle, get a smaller car, sacrifice! If we as a nation cut down on our gas consumption, oil producers will have to cut the cost of it.

Forget about the gasoline tax rebate.
Its time to get tough with all the politicians, the president, democrats and
republicans. Tell them we want a Manhattan type project immediately to get us off the gasoline kick and into hydrogen
driven cars. Spend the billions here instead of Iraq and get all the brains at
the top universities working on this project. How do we get their attention?
Easy as eating pie. Get the word out to
the media that WE ARE GOING TO FLUSH THE
POLITICIANS DOWN THE TOILET UNLESS THEY
START DOING SOMETHING. THEN ON A GIVEN
DATE/TIME (say at 1500 hours on a Sunday)EVERYBODY IN
THE U.S. START FLUSHING THEIR TOILETS UNTIL
THE WATER PRESSURE IS SO LOW THAT EVERYTHING COMES TO A STANDSTILL. THE
POLITICIANS WOULD HAVE TO GET ON THE TELEVISION CHANNELS AND SAY THAT THEY HAVE
HEARD US AND WILL DO SOMETHING IMMEDIATELY.

I find it grimly amusing whenever I see a woman poster claim that if Hillary loses the nomination, she'll vote for McCain in November rather than Obama. If you want to put another anti-choice Republican in the White House and see him add another couple radical right justices to create a permanent (at least during most of our lifetimes) pro-life majority on the Supreme Court, be my guest. Roe v. Wade will be overturned by 2010 at the latest if that occurs--you do realize that, right?

But if you do vote McCain instead of Obama this fall, then please, PLEASE don't ever again spout on about how women make intelligent and informed decisions and are ready to be president--I don't wanna hear it! After all, your vote will completely disprove what you say. If you can't get past pettiness and spite and realize what's in your (and your daughters', and your sisters', and your friends', and the country's) best interests, then you deserve to lose the right to choose. You're proving you're too stupid to be trusted with that responsibility.

Personally, I think the number of self-obsessed and foolish women is far smaller in real life than they are on this board. At least I'm hoping so, for all our sakes.

If we really want to get the attention of the oil companies perhaps a popular movement to nationalize them as part of the election year debate would help reel in their rampant greed. Fear is a great motivator.

In the meantime, the rich get rich and the poor take public transit.

Forget the summergasoline tax debate. All
that has to be done is reduce the speed
limit to 55 MPH. It will save millions and
millions of gallons of gasoline and reduce
prices. Another alternative turn all the
gas stations - just that - gas stations.
Just buy gasoline. Perioed! Don't buy candy, soft drinks, water, junk food, etc.
When the oil companies see their golden goose just drying up they will reduce gasoline prices. Gas stations now practically sell everything but GASOLINE.

Nancy Pelosi is exactly right. The summer gas tax holiday idea is sheer idiocy and will not benefit the driving public one iota.

If the 18 cents per gallon gas tax is rescinded and the tax burden is shifted to corporate oil as Hillary has suggested, then Exxon et al will be paying an extra 18 cents per gallon tax directly to the government. And how will they make it up? By raising the price per gallon by, ummm... 18 cents! Gee, so the price remains the same and the only difference is whose tax return that 18 cents per gallon winds up on. What's even worse is that, unlike most of us, the oil companies will DEDUCT that 18 cents per gallon as a business expense, thereby lowering their own tax bill and DECREASING the amount of total revenue generated to the government while INCREASING their own bottom line.

I'd expect such fiscal idiocy from Sen. McCain, as he is self-admittedly hardly an expert on how the economy works. But for Hillary Clinton to adopt McCain's horrid idea (and this after shrilly criticizing Obama for correctly noting in an interview that the Republicans were the real party of ideas during much of the Clintons' previous eight years in office) is the most naked and cynical kind of pandering. What's refreshing is that, while some simpletons may blindly applaud this sham, the superdelegates are beginning to see just what kind of emptyheaded policies they'll have to deal with if Clinton becomes the nominee. Hillary can fool some of the people some of the time (like she's trying to do with this sham proposal), but she can't fool the ones who matter most now--the ones who'll be deciding in Denver. Ironic that she's make such a damnfool misstep when she finally has Obama reeling just a bit. But then, the Clintons have always been their own worst enemies.

I can't believe some pro-Hillary supporters are saying? Write-in Hillary's name in November if she is pushed out?!?!

Hillary is already out. She's just too stubborn, like GW Bush, to realize it. Look at Obama's statistics. Obama is ahead in pledged delegates, total popular vote, more states won, and more campaign funds raised.

If Hillary had Obama's statistics, Hillary supporters would be yelling for Obama to drop out! Saying that he can't win the nomination! Slick Willy would be out touting this as well!

No one is forcing Hillary out yet. Hopefully the primary results after May 6th will allow her to just drop out.

Another reality the tax savings would be about 5%. Hell, many people will get as much as a %10 savings just emptying their trunk and checking the air in their tires. It is easy to get better mileage and that is money in your pocket a lot more then $28 over three months. People have to smarten up and learn to take care of themselves.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 1, 2008 6:05 PM | Report abuse

In all reality, gas prices will never return to old prices. $4.00 or $5.00 a gallon will become the norm and people better get used to it. The hope is it will stop at some point but $8.00 a gallon gas is not out of the question in the near, maybe very near, future.

YES WE CAN!

the constitution doesn´t prohibit caping oil prices. Not when the entire economy is dependent on oil.

Is it unConstitutional? Let the courts slowly work it out, over the next year.

Meanwhile Americans can fill up for $2.50 per gallon.

Any Congressperson against capping gas will be thrown out of office.

There is a saying, "No one ever went broke over estimating the intelligence of the public". Politicians make it their stock and trade. They know no matter what they say or how stupid it is, a certain percent of the people will buy it. Sellers make millions on late night TV with pitches to the stupid public.

"Based on 90% of the above comments from ignorant small minded fellow citizens regarding what works and what doesn't, I have small hope for this country's future. Are you all so addicted to oil that you refuse to understand the source of repair and construction highway funds?

We all pay taxes to keep this country as great as it is, so populist demeaning and weak thoughts about saving an average of $18 for the entire summer seem ludicrous.

"It's economics, stupid." -Bill Clinton

A pointed attack against Bush Sr.'s economic policies of the late 80's, an attack that allowed him to beat the incumbent presidential nominee.
However, it seems that recently the Clinton campaign has decided to throw economics under that proverbial, relentless, bus. The same bus that has recently claimed so many Obama supporters.

For Clinton, a candidate who's whole platform is based on creating 'working policies' for the working class, it has come down to pandering for votes. It's my hope that the American public understands the economical implications of such a policy. A policy that takes away nearly $9 Billion in revenue from a Government facing $9 Trillion in debt. Cutting taxes is obviously not the road to a national surplus. Depleting highway funds by $9 billion appears to be the road to another year of deficit spending, an un-paved road at that.

I commend the Obama campaign for standing up for what is economically appropriate, and not sinking to the Clinton-McCain level. A decrease in taxes by $.18 cents a gallon will have very little impact in the short-run, but in the long run will prove to be counterproductive.

With that being said, it appears that the economy will be the political talking point of the summer. With almost certain stagflation looming on the forefront of every American's mind, the candidate that can most appropriately address these issues in the general election will prove to be very formidable. It seems that McCain, regardless of how un-realistic his proposals actually are, may be winning over important demographics for the 2008 election.

Why don't you listen to people who understand economics for a change, we're trying to help you. The tiny bit of change you get now will cost you more in the long run. 51.) My Donations Have Been Checked Thoroughly - Lie, you only gave back Hsu ($72K [Yes, the same Hsu, Obama supporters try to tie Clinton to]) and Rezko (first $66K, then when caught lying $86K, then when caught lying again $150K and now caught lying YET AGAIN, it's $250k) their money when publically called on their involvement in your campaigns.

54.) I Have Clean Connections Despite Rezko - Lie, you are not only connected to Exelon and Rezko, you are also connected to Hillary PAC supporter Mr. Hsu, AND an Iraqi Billionaire of ill repute, Nadhmi Auchi, who ripped off people in the Food For Oil, Iraqi deal. 55.) I never heard sermons like Rev. Wright's, that have been in videos all day, You Tube - Lie! 3 days later during your Mea Culpa speech you said "Did I hear controversial statements while I sat in that church? Yes I did." FLIP-FLOPER
56.) The Passport Invasion is a conspiracy to find dirt on me! - Lie. Your own Campaign Foreign Policy Advisor is the CEO of the company that looked into your records. Could it be that you had them look into yours to hide the fact you looked into Clinton's and McCain's more than a year before!
57.) Rev. Meeks has nothing to do with my campaigning - Lie. Rev. Meeks appeared in ads for your Senate Campaign, donated to you, and helped raise money, then AND NOW. He also seems to despise America as much as Rev. Wright.
58.) My wife didn't mean America is ignorant, she was just using a phrase - Lie. Again, MicHELLe's comments are perfectly in sync with Wright's, Meeks', and Farrakhans, both in language, anger, and direction.
59.) I am very Anti-Terror - Lie. One of your good pals is long time radical and terrorist William Ayers, with whom you have been seen in the last 12 months and who has helped the now jailed khalidi, Professor at Columbia who invited Ahmadinejad to the University, to raise money for Palestinian terrorism attacks against Israel. PS - Your church published a pro Hamas Manifesto - guess you weren't there on THAT Sunday either? How lucky for you.
60.) I have the best plan to cure the Mortgage Crisis - Lie. You and your campaign buddy Penny 'SubPrime Bank Collapse' Prizker have had your little fingers full of subprime cash - Obama has taken $1,180,103 from the top issuers of subprime loans: Obama received $266,907 from Lehman, $5395 from GMAC, $150,850 from Credit Suisse First Boston, $11,250 from Countrywide, $9052 from Washington Mutual, $161,850 from Citigroup, $4600 from CBASS, $170,050 from Morgan Stanley, $1150 from Centex, and last but certainly NOT LEAST - Obama received $351,900 from Goldman Sachs. I am sure that cash all came from folks who knew the subprime loan they had was a dream, eh?
61.) I played greater role in crafting liberal stands on gun control, the death penalty and abortion - Lie - It was found that Obama -- the day after sitting for the interview -- filed an amended version of the questionnaire, which appears to contain Obama's own handwritten notes added to one answer. Read Obama had greater role on liberal survey

Thanks Nancy P. for confirming to all of those IDIOTS who thinks that they are going to benefit greatly by saving #30.00 on gas while at the same time rising the gas tax prices and taking billions away from infrastructure just so that their dumb a** can save a few da** $$$$ on gas. We are all leaking and trying to stretch that weak a$$ dollar...Thanks to GWB and those dumb a$$ Republicans...They sure know how to prey upon the idiots and retards!!! Clinton has finally followed suit...Another example of how she really feel about Indian (Hossier folk) go to www.Huffingtonpost.com. Don't even bother explaining they just want to hear what they want to hear. "Please lie to me and the rest of the time I can keep my head in the sand"

quote
Why don't you people understand that a 'gas holiday' from Memoral Day to Labor Day 2009 would only save you about $28 total over that summer period. Those taxes are set up to pay the cost of infrastructure like road and bridge repairs throughout the US. Too, for that $28 savings you think you might get, realize that the oil companies and ultimately gas companies (owned by the oil companies)will offset the savings with higher gas prices! We need an alternative energy source instead. Don't fall for the political pandering by Hillary or McCain.

I am not a Washington Post employee paid to start these blogs with inflammatory and ridiculous comments to invoke reaction out of people. Needless to say, I disagree that my comments are inflammatory and ridiculous.

Cutting the tax is just vote pandering. The price of gas will just rise up to where it was with the tax in place, and the oil company will pocket extra billions in profits. The era of cheap oil is over.. what is our plan to deal with that? Anyone?

These weak and uncreative efforts by the government to shore up the economy will accomplish nothing and do more damage than good.

The small tax rebates will be spent on products that are made in China, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Singapore, India and others insuring that the money ends up in other economies. People will have a new HD flat screen TV but they won't have jobs to keep the cable turned on. Worse yet, the government didn't have the money to send out so they had to borrow it or print it adding to inflation resulting in the people paying for it anyway. The gas tax proposal will not put enough additional money in anyone's hands to make a difference.

If the Feds had simply given the money to the already existing Rural Utilities Service to be distributed as grants or zero interest loans to be distributed to utility companies for implementing renewable energy infrastructures, it would have turned the economy around. The private sector would have invested in the manufacturers creating more jobs and IPOs. More jobs would have been created in the utility sector. Pollution would have been reduced. Our dependency on and involvement in foreign oil would have reduced. The price of oil would have dropped. Taxes could be reduced and, last but not least, the government would have gotten its money back.

Instead of shoring up monarchies in oil producing companies, the money could be invested in the automobile, fabric, and utensil industries as well having exactly the same effects and further reducing our carbon footprint.

It's such a no brainer that you have to question the government's intentions.

So even though the gas holiday tax has no chance of passing in congress or of working in the first place, Hillary will still keep touting it to try to gain the votes of those white blue collar workers whom she apparently believes are so stupid, they won't see through her pandering. I'm a white blue collar worker in Indiana and I know a line of bull when I hear it. Obama may not have all the answers but at least he knows HOW to tell the truth--something Hillary Clinton has no clue about.

Nancy Pelosi
Madam speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to put a Windfall Tax on all stock market profits (including Retirement funds, 401Ks and
Mutual Funds!)

She quotes...'We need to work toward the goal of equalizing income in our country and at the same time limiting the amount
the rich can invest.' When asked how these new tax dollars would be spent, she replied: 'We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help, along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profit taxes could go a long way to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as 'Americans.'
