Pfleger Describes a Life Fighting Racism

Note: Please upgrade your Flash plug-in to view our enhanced content.

By Ed O'Keefe
It wasn't long ago that the Rev. Michael L. Pfleger of Chicago was preaching the virtues of racial harmony and the need for society to address racism in a direct manner. In late April, the Chicago-area Catholic priest told The Post's Hamil Harris, following the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's incendiary speech at the National Press Club, "Beyond the presidential election, until we deal with racism in America, we're not going to build the America we all hope for."

Pfleger, who said that he'd known Wright for 25 years, described his life as being about "trying to deal with that sin in a country that doesn't want to deal with it."

"What I hope that might happen is that we might decide as a country for maybe the first time, to honestly look at America. Look at the racism that is alive and well in America, and say, 'Do we have the courage to deal with it honestly and truthfully?'" he had said. "That's what I hope will happen."

The remarks show a different side of the controversial pastor, who drew national attention and condemnation yesterday for remarks made during a guest appearance at Barack Obama's Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago last Sunday, where he blasted Obama's rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in blistering and racially charged language.

The remarks were so harsh that Obama felt obliged to disavow them, just as he had disavowed Wright's previous racial comments from the same pulpit.

Try again...The people who still support Obama even though he has been repeatedly exposed as an endorser of white and Jewish racism - and a supporter and friend of terrorists are either in serious denial or are threats to our national security as well.

Unless I think he absolutely needs my vote to survive, I intend to do a write in of Hillary Clinton (I have to ask my county election committee how to do it still). I'd rather have a Democrat than a Repub, so I'll support Obama if FORCED to, other than that, this African American woman still intends to cast a November ballot for Mrs Clinton. The hell with you Obama people who would not support her if she were the candidate. At least I'll do the right thing if he needs it.

Hey, Rubiconski: get your own website and deify Obama. How many 'friends' of Obama's must he express surprise and disappointment in by them revealing their 'hidden' opinions? The man is like Milli-Vanilli; a contrived, slick marketing package dressed up in black and chanting Hope/Change/Unity while mouthing empty platitudes in response to any serious questions. Hello, Obama, is anybody home???

The observations of and comments about the link between Father Pfleger and Senator Obama were unbelievable. Ridiculing anyone is not advisable but the late night show host and Saturday night live do it all the time as a matter of fact that is their appeal. Does thepublic know that the Clinton's developed a comprehensive deceptive plan for returning to the White House and they have been scheming and working relentlessly putting the building blocks in place for years? Do they know that Senator Clinton looked the people of New York in the eyes and told them she wanted to be their Senator while all along she was laying the foundation for a run for the Presidency? Do they know that she has no plans to create or manufacture jobs for the Hardworking "White People" of Western New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia? Do they know that she used them as she and the former President have and continue to use whomever and whatever tactic that plays on people's fears not their hopes and dreams? Do they know that Governor Richardson, Professor Reich and others close to the Clinton's could not take it anymore because they believed that they paid their dues in the nineties and finally said here we go again and got out? Do they know that most of what Father Pfleger said was true? Specifically, do they know that Senator Clinton, the former President and many of her supporters like Howard Wolfson feel that she is entitled to the nomination and the presidency for a host of reasons including those outlined by Father Pfleger and they are angry and befuddled that the neophyte stole their dream? Do they know that the Clintonites never thought for a moment that honesty, thorough comprehensive organization, strategic and unselfish planning, vision and commitment to working collaborative and collectively with all members of the American electorate was a viable approach? Do they know that Senator Clinton and her supporters did not either encourage or allow the American People to have the Audacity To Hope and dream of a better life unless she is the democratic nominee? Do they know that it was THE NOVICE WHO SAID YES WE CAN AND IT RESONATED WITH THE ELECTORATE? Do they know that these are powerful words in times of trouble? Please remind the public of FDR and his Fire Side Chats and JFK and his messages of hope and challenge. Do they think that these leaders were empty suits or did they give the American People something to "cling to" during very difficult times? Specifically, hope and the belief that we can have a better life if all of us put our shoulders to the wheel and work toward common goals. Can the political analysts and the media help the public see the forest or are the trees blocking their vision? Father Pfleger is not Senator Obama's problem he is our problem.

Are you kidding me? This Pfleger,Wright and Barrack's old buddies, are a bunch of nut jobs!
You would have to be a complete fool to not see that Obama is really playing the college kids and elites like a fiddle. Believe me if he got in to office, you would see Aires,Wright, Pfleger and the nation of Islam all up in the white house trying to tear down this country. They are all within arm's length from becoming the next canditate. They can hardly wait, like suprise birthday party members hiding in a big closet ready to jump out and shock us all. They can hardly contain themselves and keep their hatred and racist agenda towards whites under control until Obama is elected. I believe their biggest problems are they have slipped up throughout the campaign and showed the racism, and elitest ways in their language. Now Obama's buddy, father Pfleger has made sexist, and racist insensitive statement direct toward Hillary and white people. The latest slip was Pfleger said the rapist would have to pay for what they have done to people of color. Now, if you don't get it after observing and hearing the hatred from the pastors, his wife's slip ups and David Aires then you have to be really dense or so racist like Wright and the other nutty Priest that your judgement is clouded. Lastly, anyone that keeps comparing McCain and Obama's preachers are flat out dishonest. McCain did not sit in their church, Obama, however, did and has supported their radical cause by still giving them money!

Obama is a phony, playing up to elitist and dopey college kids that are just following the herd!

One thing is right, and that is white people with common sense will not vote for obama! Hopefully the common sense will be the majority.

Ofcourse the congregation would be eager to celebrate a counter-punch specially delivered by a visiting white priest from an entirely different Christian denomination....as if to say "see we are not crazy, everyone thinks this way" The media's handling of the Wright controversy is directly responsible for this; the congregation is only retaliating in the only way it can for a solid month of nationally televised defamation of the church and its founding pastor. Hillary was only too eager to pile on.

On-the-other-hand Mr. Pledger was likely paid-off to hurt Obama. None of it makes sense, duplicating Wright's theatrical performance, 1 week before critical primaries, the choice of Trinity, picking a fight that was never his to begin with and specially when it is nearly won. And there was a camera in the audience that posted in two days to Youtube. The intended audience was the national media! His long-term mutual support with Obama is flimsy when compared to what he could get for his ministry in such a high stake drama...that is perfectly legal! Classic Chicago-style politics.

The sheepish democrats that get sucked in to this crap need to start thinking.

Note to Hillary - Quit......There is no way you will win. You see, you need votes of individuals like myself and that isn't going to happen. I see the same "slickness" embedded in your campaign and how your staffers handle themselves. I don't think you or your husband would know truth unless it came wrapped in a $10,000 "contribution". Yes, you are better than any Republican, but that isn't saying much. Obama is a breath of fresh air, where you, well, just cry. I'm sorry, but crying in front of TV cameras isn't what I want in a leader, especially considering the world we live in. The way your husband has chummed up to George Sr., tells me that you are the LAST person that I want to see in the WH. You defend lobbyists and you defend accepting their money. Quite simply, that is indefensible and morally wrong. What worries me the most though is that you see nothing wrong with it. So, for the good of the country, QUIT!

Obama is one of the most racially divisive figures in American politics in the last 25 years. Publicly, he speaks in soaring rhetoric and platitudes, and privately, the Axelrod-Gibbs-Plouffe triumvirate engages in dirty, back-room, old school Chicago politics, playing the race card whenever possible.

Obama has never united anybody. He can't even unite his own church, and he's torn the Democratic party asunder, and we're supposed to believe he can unite the country? I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid, thank you.

I am not buying it for a second. If you really wanted to bring an end to racism, you wold not participate in this sort of divisive talk.
Let's not even get started with the misogynist aspect of his little tirade. Who is the guy who comes out and denounces this treatment of Clinton-Obama, no not a chance. It was Mccain- in a very respectful and kind manner. Ok Mccain, you are looking so good to Clinton supporters. The Democratic party burned our candidate. Obama supporters have been horribly rude, and they are all going to learn a few lessons the hard way. You've got my vote, and so many of my fellow Clinton supporters votes as well.

Obama is nothing more than a racist and an anti-semite. It's surprising that the media hasn't asked the hard questions to Obama himself about these issues. The man has failed to distance himself from these preachers and even helped one obtain Federal funding.

How could this man have been in Reverend Wright's church all those years and not have heard all of the racist and anti-American comments that the guy made? He knew the guy for 20 years so he obviously was aware that this man was racist.

Obama has also said he'd be willing to negotiate with terrorist groups and countries that support it like Iran. You'd think that Obama supporters would wise up already and see that this guy is bad news. Are they just mindless sheep or do they honestly believe in Obama's campaign of racism, anti-semitism and sexism? It seems to me that if they're willing to vote for and follow him then they must share his views.

The Democratic Party has certainly shown that they have no problem backing this guy and are even ignoring his campaign of hate. The Democrats would be safer going with Hillary. She may have made a few mistakes but I don't see her campaign surrounding itself with these types of characters that Obama has.

The media needs to stop acting like Obama supporters and start asking him the hardline questions. Obama keeps saying he's about change and it's the worst kind. Just say NO to Obama.

The Blue Haired Ladies Follow Hillary to DC

Hillary has ensured that every American with a television set has heard about her female oppression. She has, according to her and her minions, suffered terribly at the hands of the white male media, white politicians, and even Barack Obama himself. Exactly what Obama has done to Hillary is unknown.

Hillary is not being honest with her blue haired ladies. She has told them that they can make a difference.

That is what Hillary's blue-haired ladies are trying to do tomorrow. But, I still don't understand what she wants them to do. Why are they going to D. C.? Do the blue-haired ladies really believe Hillary has been discriminated against?

I don't believe she has had that many doors (if any) slammed in her face because she is a woman. Hillary is so rigid and insistent that she would take the darn door off the hinges and kick it out of sight.

I wonder if these women understand Hillary? Or, do they feel sorry for her because she's gotten herself in a big mess and doesn't know how to get out of it? Sometimes that can happen too. Hillary is so driven by her obsessive compulsiveness, her delusions, and her inability to know how to stop. Her boundaries are all messed up. She can't tell the difference between winning and loosing because any normal person would know that they lost the race a while back.

Experienced politicians would have given up the ghost and gone back, in her case, to the Senate. But not Hillary. She has lumbered on but I still can't figure out where she's going and why she's going to wherever in hell she's going. A tongue-twister, huh? Well, she's a tongue twister and a piece of work too.

Assassination Talk Shows Hillary's True Colors

When Hillary Clinton invoked the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy as a justification for staying in the 2008 Democratic presidential race, she revealed how desperate she has become.

Clinton's latest assassination comments further reveal the contradictions regarding her candidacy. She cannot have it both ways. Hillary Clinton cannot claim to be a feminist whose candidacy has fallen victim to misogyny, yet engage in raw, unabashed appeals to white-skin solidarity, and endorse military aggression against innocent women and children in Iraq and Iran. Red meat, testosterone and hubris dressed in a pants suit do not equate to feminism.

Touting her civil rights record while waiting for her Black opponent to be slain, Clinton does nothing but debase the public discourse and show her true colors. It suggests an unhealthy desire for power at all costs, and at the very least, a sore loser with sour grapes over a poorly-run campaign.

Most of all, it suggests that Clinton has a lot on her mind these days, and no good can come out of what she has been thinking.

I was shocked by these comments (to say the least). They were incredibly racist and sexist as well. It surprises me that Obama talks about unifying the country and bringing about change when he attends this church. I was surprised by the clapping and cheering that came from the pulpit. It was really just sickening.

Obama needs to remove himself from that church. Otherwise, he's screwed for November (as if he wasn't already with the narrow coalition that he has). The more that I learn about this man and the more that I research his record, I find him less appealing. Things like this certainly do not help. Even though I am a Democrat, I'm not sure I could vote for him. I would rather vote for McCain.

Why in God's name did Obama seek spiritual advice from not one, but two, racist clergymen, for over 20 years? Why is he still a member of the church that his own supporter, Oprah Winfrey, has quit in disgust? Does the fact that Obama scrubbed Pfleger's name from his website indicate that Pfleger is no longer a spiritual advisor? ...C'mon, Washington Post -- start asking real questions.

Pfleger is right. Hillary has made numerous plays for sympathy with tears, coughing fits, and Lewinsky lament--All within 24 hours of a vote!

Hillary does feel entitled to the presidency! She stayed with a serial cheater that she does not love in order to become president. She sees now that it will never happen, and the gloves are off.

Hillary speaks of hard working white people and assassination, yet it's Obama "going too far" when a pastor makes largely true, if not polite, observations. When Hillary hits out, it's: Politics is a contact sport and/or If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. But when she is hit, she is instantly a victim looking for pity and sympathy.

Problem here is that the educated idiots did not bother to ask what change he is talking about. Jackie:

Then by all means, stay away.

You clearly have a complete misunderstanding of this country, and a very blind view of the problems in Europe (I would hate to be a Turkish immigrant in Germany or a Algerian immigrant in France, and trust me, I can go on!).

Yes, we Americans can argue loudly and even profanely. The point is that we acknowledge and talk about our problems. We don't hide them and then pretend to be "shocked, shocked that there is gambling going on here!" Moreover, you ignore the fact that we Americans, as individuals, are the most generous people on the planet. No other country, and I mean no other, has a more generous population (no, I'm not talking about Foreign Aid, I'm talking about individuals!).

The penultimate point: as diverse and opinionated as we are, when challenged: we come together.

So, by all means, please, stay where you are.

It is not racist to talk about racism.
It is not racist to talk about white supremacy.
It is not racist to talk about white privilege.
Waving your hand in church when you are moved by someone talking about racism does make you a racist.
Being angry is not being racist.
Being angry about racism is not being racist.
Being angry about the past racism is not being racist.
What IS racism is telling people they are Un-American if they talk about racism.
What IS racism is telling people they are Un-American if they are angry about racism.
What IS racist is being a voyeur to black churches and calling them haters.
What IS racist is a plenty of U.S. history.
What IS racist is condemning people who want to talk about racism in the U.S.
What IS racist is any insistence that race be an unspoken, untouchable, invisible issue

That said, the pastor talking about Clinton is not making a very solid argument when he pretends to read Hillary Clinton's heart AND soul. But this is church, where pastors are performing orators, not sedate philosophers. They illustrate ideas in dramatic ways. It doesn't make them racists or hateful or un-American. If fact, they are arguing over what the meaning of America is in the first place.
Conservative white churches talk in their own dramatic terms.

We've all seen the edited version of Pfleger's rousing speech, but have you seen the full uncensored, unedited version? http://www.236.com/news/2008/05/30/rev_michael_pfleger_does_stand_6843.php

I'm Canadian...and I'm scared to death that Americans are going to refrain from electing a true leader - someone who can bring the US back into the international community - based on "guilt by association" and other racially charged tactics.

Seriously. What is wrong with you people?

If I only knew!

I can tell you this though: Most of these posters are miserable dim-witted with nothing better to do with bigoted nostalgia.

Go Barack 08!

to ALL the idiots saying "bye bye barry" and other redundancies, please stop and THINK (that is, if you're capable). you are probably the same freaks who were CONVINCED that rev. wright would sink obama, "just words" would sink obama... hate to break it to you, but this too shall pass. get used to saying HELLO to PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!

we are TIRED of media-manufactured DISTRACTIONS, and thank god, we're in the majority.

by the way, father pfleger was right.

First, I believe there should be a separation of state and church. These reverends should not have this much clout over an election of presidency of a secular Republic. Thank the right fanatics by weakening the wall of separation.

wow there are some ignorant trolls on washpo blogs. why don't you people go post on conservative blogs or blogs run by the KKK. we don't need your vitriol here.

Hillary "entitled"? I bet a lot of women think Hillary had to work a lot harder than many men to get where she is. I believe she was one of about 9 women in a class of 300 at Yale.

I thought church sermons were intended to lift people up - not drag others down. This crazy Father Pfleger ranting, raving and race baiting while the folks in Obama's congregation hoot, holler and applaud.

This is church?

This is where Obama takes his daughters?

Well Manolete, I can see you have really studied the candidates and there platforms.(sic) I guess In your opinion Hitler would be a better president than Obama. It is intelligent folk like you that allows the ignorance of racism to thrive in America.Hopefully god has seen fit that you not be fruitful and multiply.

The content of Fr. Pfleger's speech was right on the money... except for the unjustified attack on Sen. Clinton, for which he owes an apology (if he has not already given one.) For the record, I am a white Obama supporter.

First Obama is a muslim.. big problem for him
Then he is not black enough.. he is doomed to fail
later he is too black.... unelectable
then he is a Christian but of course with a clause....still a bigger problem for him/guilty by association
Obama follows the DNC rules..he has disenfranchised Michigan and Florida
Obama condemns his pastors comments.. he did not go far enough
Obama disown his pastor...little too late
Obama calls a lady sweetie... he is a chauvinistic sexist clown
Obama beats Hillary free and fair... he is an arrogant bastard somehow he is still at fault for winning
Come in Rev. Pfleger all hell broke loose.. no wait he is white..then of course Obamas new pastor who introduced Pleger to the pulpit is the guilty one, Obama by default because of this is guilty (ask Fox news Hannity)

Obama seems to be wrong in everything he does except of course pulling the biggest upset ever in American politics. Only the brainless would not respect that.
or maybe it's just folly to be sane in our world

Senator Obama did not "disavow" the remarks by Pfleger, he said merely that he was disappointed. I find it strange that The Trail and so many other MSM blogs and news articles and opinion pieces never miss a chance to go after Senator Clinton but can't even bring themselves to report on Pfleger's outrageous remarks without showing this guy's wonderful side.

Posted by: B.N. | May 30, 2008 4:19 PM | Report abuse

What Pfleger said was no where near the level of what Hagee, Parsley, or Wright have said. Anyone thin-skinned enough to think it measures up to those does not belong in politics. This apologizing for every minor slight trend is out of control.

Here we go again.........Barack Hussein's family and friends are racist, radical extremists and sexist, and can not help themselves expressing their hate for America and non-black Americans.

Barack Hussein has developed close relationships over most of his life with individuals and organizations that practice their religion of hate towards white men and women and are pursuing a black supremacist ideology and destruction of America.

Barack is really a TROJAN HORSE, he seems innocent and presents an image of peace and unification, BUT as we now know, he is hollow and hides within a group of extremists waiting for the night, to come out of their hiding and destroy our country.
See what their true agenda is: blackradicalcongress.org.

Here we go again............We can be fooled once, twice, but we can not be fooled all the time!

Hillary or McCain is the only choice for americans that love and are proud of America!

I agree that we have larger, even more "exciting" issues to formulate opinions on. There are a complete variety of them that a great portion of us are affected by.

At the end of the distractions, nonsense coverage amidst all of the major issues that deserves all of this intense of amount of focus, I do expect our troops to Come Home ASAP! We need to get started on "fixing" our gas issue. I hope the media will focus more intensely on the issues from various angles. We are in 2008, and this is a very important year after the past two consecutive terms we have experienced! I hope the media will not discredit this year's presidential process with So Much concentration of nonsense coverage. Enough!

As for this, I believe people will do well to acknowledge the various forms of "isms" that exists, and make attempts to help do better.

Get rid of Hagee, Parsley, Wright, and Pfleger.

There can only be one answer to the likes of Wright, Pfleger and Obama. We need a George Wallace or a Strom Thurmond like person as McCain's VP. McCain in 08!

There aree 2 parts to the Rev's comment: the first part having to deal with the generational privileges enjoyed by white people which cannot be denied even if america does not want to acknowledge it;
the second part is sexist and misogynist which is reprehensible.

FOX is showing a clip that includes the "Rev" saying "A Whole Lot of White People are Mad Too."
- while MSNBC's clip STOPS just short of that remark. Is MSNBC Omitting that remark because it so Sharply Highlights the major CAUSE of Obama's ELECTABILITY PROBLEM; VOTERS are mad about Obama attending a racist church for 20 years?

NEXT Questions: Why is MSNBC, CNN, the TV Media NOT asking Obama: Why did you Vote FOR the Cheney Energy Bill? Why is The TV MEDIA NOT telling you anything about the Cheney Energy Bill? Why did MSNBC CUT the sound to Clinton's speech as soon as she said the words: Cheney Energy Bill?

Why is The MEDIA NOT covering the NEWSPAPER NEWS about Obama? Like the following, for example:

CHANGE NOBODY CAN BELIEVE IN:

Obama Supporters, Please Tell Us HOW Obama can WIN a Presidential Election, WHEN the TV MEDIA Starts REPORTING
THIS--REAL--INDISPUTABLE---Newspaper NEWS:

Obama's whole campaign is based on
ONE BIG LIE:
***CHANGE***
He didn't make.

Obama claims 7 years experience in the Illinois legislature - Working Across the Aisles, Bringing people together to get good CHANGES passed -as exemplified by 26 good bills with his name on them.

A Chicago reporter says all 26 bills were passed in ONE Year and they were NOT Obama's.

http://wweek.com/editorial/3418/10516/

EXCERPTS:
But what's interesting, and almost never discussed, is that he built his entire legislative record in Illinois in a single year.

Republicans controlled the Illinois General Assembly for six years of Obama's seven-year tenure.

Then Emil Jones Jr. (became the Senate Majority leader), He became Obama's kingmaker. Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.

During his seventh year in the state Senate, Obama ... sponsored a whopping 26 bills including many he now cites in his presidential campaign when attacked as inexperienced.

Working Across the Aisles/
Making CHANGES = ZILCH

Taking Credit for Other People's Work/
INTEGRITY = ZERO

(Obama's book "Audacity ..." Shows:
Democrats had Majority Control of the Illinois Senate when those bills were passed. They were passed during his last year in the state Senate.)

QUOTING OBAMA:
"After two terms during which I labored in the minority, Democrats had gained control of the state senate, and I had subsequently passed a slew of bills, from reforms of the Illinois death penalty system to an expansion of the state's health program for kids. I had continued to teach at the University of Chicago Law School, a job I enjoyed, and was frequently invited to speak around town."

The Rev. in Obama's most recent Rev. controversy - in his "sermon" ridiculing Senator Clinton said: "A Whole Lot of White People are Mad Too." He's right about that; a whole lot of people viewed Obama's 20 year attendance at a RACIST church as an indication of his own outlook -resulting in him becoming not very popular with the VOTERS at the polls. Given fresh evidence of the racist hateful, nature of Obama's church - it's Obvious that he's UNELECTABLE.

What about sexism? Oh, I forgot, he is a representative of our misogynistic paternalistic religions. What can one expect? Steeped in the depths of woman hatred is to be expected.

It is good that Pfleger fights against racism. I assume that means racism as it applies to peoples of color only. Now, let him mature some more and recognize the sexism he lives.

I am so tired of the religious men who spout hatred and venom. I think it is time they recognize the separation of church and state constitutionally mandated in our nation. It seems that the most hateful statements of this presidential campaign are spoken by men of the cloth, paragons of hatred and exclusion. Whatever happened to the Christian value of inclusion.

Posted by: jaimetre | May 30, 2008 3:27 PM | Report abuse

All the more reason to keep religion and religious leaders out of politics! People of every faith have a responsibility to participate in our democracy but I am sick of the attention religious leaders are getting. With the economy, war, etc., we've got bigger issues to attack!

Posted by: sharon | May 30, 2008 3:19 PM | Report abuse

"Beyond the presidential election, until we deal with racism in America, we're not going to build the America we all hope for."
--------

I agree. Until the Irreverd Pfleger sets aside his white hatred, and treats all people as children of God, more hatred will generated and passed to new generations.

Bye bye Barry, you are a really sick man...
