Reid, Pelosi Call for Quick End to Democratic Campaign

By Paul Kane
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi both have predicted a swift end to the Democratic presidential campaign once South Dakotans and Montanans cast the last ballots of the marathon primary season on Tuesday, signaling that there is little support among the party's institutional leaders for a drawn-out fight by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) to secure support from unpledged superdelegates.

Reid and Pelosi, speaking yesterday and today in separate events during political travels in San Francisco, suggested the race would likely end next week -- a conclusion that almost certainly means Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) would secure the nomination, given his narrow but comfortable lead right now in both pledged delegates and superdelegates.

In an interview this morning with KGO Radio, while promoting his new book, Reid said he spoke this morning about the campaign with Pelosi and to Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean last night. "We agree there won't be a fight at the convention," he told radio listeners, appearing to suggest that Obama would have sufficient delegates to presume victory next week.

Later, at the Commonwealth Club, Reid predicted definitively that the race would conclude shortly after the South Dakota and Montana contests, without specifying who the nominee would be. "By this time next week, it'll be all over, give or take a day," Reid said.

Pelosi, in an hour-long meeting with the San Francisco Chronicle's editorial board, predicted the nominee would emerge within a week of the last votes next Tuesday. "I think it is all going in the right direction," she said in the Wednesday interview, which was published in the newspaper today. She said it would be resolved "in an orderly fashion" as early as next week.

In particular, Pelosi was adamant that the race would not last through August and the convention in Denver.

"We cannot take this fight to the convention," she said. "It must be over before then."

(Click here for the podcast from Pelosi's editorial board meeting.)

Currently, the magic number for the nomination is 2,026 delegates, a figure that Obama campaign officials believe they will be within roughly 10 delegates of after the voting this weekend in Puerto Rico and the June 3 states. That figure could grow if the DNC bylaws panel agrees this weekend to return up to half of the delegate totals to Michigan and Florida, which were stripped of all their delegates because they pushed their primaries into January against DNC rules.

Reid and Pelosi endorsed the idea of giving some partial recognition to Michigan and Florida, but Pelosi -- who chairs the convention -- said some retribution must be exacted from their decision to buck the DNC-sanctioned calendar.

"If you have no order and no discipline in terms of party rules, people will be having their primary in the year before the presidential election," she said. "So there has to be some penalty."

I think it would be great if the people of Florida and Michigan would all become Independents and show DNC that the America people should be the ones to make the rules, not a few stupid power hungry idiots. they did their dirty cover up today to save their own skin, like the cowards they are. They could have had a revote 2 months ago. This will not go away. SENATOR Clinton shoud run as a Independent and take all those votes with her. What a laugh that would be,

I think we as a people have become a nation of ignoramuses. I cannot help but feel sorry for the people who have posted such hate in this column. Democrats do not be fooled by the Republicans who are posting here and saying hateful things about both Democratic candidates. The Democrats are smart enough to recognize that we need change and will come out unified to defeat McCain. The statements that supporters of each Democratic candidates are making right now about not voting for the opposing candidate are being said in the heat of the moment. But when they calm down and realize that they will be voting to end the economic recession, the Iraq war, global warming, povery and lack of healthcare for all, they will vote for a Democrat.

It is unethical to have members of the family at the DNC, how the democratic party can explain that the brother of a candidate is part of the comitte? Is senator Clinton"s Brother part of the DNC? who allowed that? is in that unethical? subjective?

The DNC should ban any individual who uses DNC for fear mongering propaganda in this case against senator Obama as terrorist trying to "highjack the delegates". this behavior violates rules again.

Although Hillary Clinton is now in full-blown damage-control mode, the obvious literal interpretation of what she said is "Hey, if I just hang in there a little bit longer, some bigoted dork will put a bullet through Obama and I'll have a clear path to the Democratic nomination and to the Presidency."

Maybe she misspoke -- although she misspoke similarly at least once before. Or maybe it was a Freudian slip? Barack Obama, charitable as usual, attributed her remark to campaign fatigue, and no doubt that was part of the explanation for it.

Can we really get to sing "Ding, dong, the witch is dead" within the foreseeable future, when Clinton finally-finally quits the race?

Hillary is done. It's over. Face the facts, take a little time to absorb it, and then move on.

She won't be back in 2012 either. With all the garbage she has pulled in this campaign, coupled with the court problems she is having from her 2000 Senate race, she will be entirely out of politics by 2012 and living off fat book royalties.

Can't wait for next week.

Three cheers for Bobo. You are absolutely right. Let this contest go to the convention when wisdom will prevail. Pelosi has been a disappoitment. Now she says, "I will intercede..." Stay out of it Nancy;this is a democracy not an autocracy where YOU and Reid decide. Let all the votes count including Florida and to some degree Michigan. Reid and Pelosi should shut up and let us have a real, democratic convention. Those are exciting times and we should not be deprived of them. Senator Clinton has won half the votes amid screams to drop out. Makes no sense.

STOP THE MADNESS!!

The bottom line is this: if this battle goes on until August, McCain Wins. End of Story. History shows that the party that cannot come together before the convention loses - and that is when conventions are not held the last week of August.

So for all the Clinton supporters who are threatening to vote for McCain, if this mess continues you can just stay home. Your candidate would have sunk the chances for Democrats across the board.

On the subject of respect, how about giving some to Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid, who have done more to move this Country forward in their careers than either Hillary or Bill have.

Posted by: Urbanspin | May 30, 2008 2:13 PM | Report abuse

To all the 2nd wave feminists that claim they will vote for McCain if Hillary isn't nominated:

---All of your daughters are voting for Obama---

---All of your daughters know that the true power of the president does not lie in policy, foreign or domestic---

---All of your daughters know that the true power of the president is the ability to select Supreme Court justices---

---A vote for McCain is a vote for the destruction of everything that you and your mothers worked so hard to achieve---

---A vote for McCain is a vote to denigrate the ability for a woman's right to choose---

Your daughters are ashamed of your actions, your threats and your conduct. You are further pushing the divide you so proudly told us we were destined to overcome. Men in politics are treated exactly the way Hillary is being treated. My mother always told me that women shouldn't be treated any differently than a man, and here you are claiming the exact opposite.

This is the world you will pass on to us, your charges, your daughters in arms. Please listen to your heart. I know you so desperately wanted to see a female president. I know that it has been a dream of yours. But what you are doing now is not worth the damage you are causing to your sisters. You are promoting divide, not unity. You are promoting hate, not love.

I always thought my mother was a revolutionary. But from the words I hear her speak now, she and many of you seem to be as close-minded as the men who kept her suppressed for so long.

I pray that she will not choose to vote for a candidate who has expressed so readily, so viciously that he will seat Supreme Court justices to overturn rulings such as Row v. Wade. It is one of the cornerstones of her feminism, and I see her casting it aside like yesterdays paper - for the sake of refusing to vote for a man who holds almost the exact same views as her preferred candidate.

Your daughters need to know you are still on the side that protects women. The side that fights for women's rights. The side that you held to so dearly, and convinced us, your daughters, was the path to our freedom.

Please don't turn your back on everything you have worked so hard to achieve.

At the beginning of this campaign season I was concerned about the state of our democracy: would the Republicans count all the votes? I spent some time trying to decipher which, if any, Republican candidates could be trusted to do so. It did not occur to me to wonder whether all the Democratic candidates could be trusted to do so or not. I knew that Michigan and Florida had decided to take a stand against the unfair and dangerous practice of letting New Hampshire and Iowa go first: the thought was that by the end of the election one candidate or the other would have prevailed and counting the votes of Michigan and Florida would be moot and their delegates could be seated without disrupting the outcome. It was a matter of civil disobedience to make a point. It has turned out to be a very close race and the principles of Democracy demand that the citizens of Michigan and Florida have their votes counted. By blocking a re-vote for the primary Obama has shown that he does not care about democracy with a small d. The DNC rules committee needs to grant a waiver to both Michigan and Florida as they did for New Hampshire and seat all their delegates with full voting power or fund new primaries in both states or seat half of the delegation but divide the delegates so that Clinton has the same delegate lead that the voters gave her.

Hillary would be the stronger general election candidate. Obama cannot construct a new coalition without the votes of up to a third of the Hillary voters. Obama lied when he claimed that the rules required him to take his name off the ballot, he did campaign in Florida by running ads which appeared there, and he blocked a new primary -- seeking instead to force Michigan to hold a caucus which is discriminatory in that it rewards those whose supporters are most active while disenfranchising those who are disabled, elderly or have to work. (See http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/5/27/92144/7994) Further, the caucus results do not reflect the will of the people as shown in the voting booths. Obama has proposed many phony solutions -- split the votes which is unfair in that it nullifies the voter's choices or move to caucuses or be given more delegates than his share of the votes. None of this will do: we Democrats will be a laughing stock for being unable to even count votes. Because Obama is unwilling to count my vote he cannot count on my vote.

The underlying problem is that the DNC rules, as applied, violate the principle of democracy -- counting every vote equally. If the DNC rules do not permit seating all the delegates with full voting rights as they were chosen by Michigan and Florida citizens I urge that a recommendation be issued to the Credentials Committee urging them to seat all the delegates at full voting strength and that the Rules Committee members pledge to support this if it comes to a floor fight. The will of the people in Michigan was shown by their choosing more delegates committed to Hillary than for anyone else. That needs to be respected. One way to do that would be to seat enough of her delegates compared to Obama's to give her the same delegate lead she would have had if the full delegation had been seated.

Obama made an error of principle when he took his name off the ballot to curry favor in Iowa and when he opposed re-doing the primaries. Yes, his supporters were deprived of an opportunity to vote for him directly but that is the result of his own political choice and should be given no greater weight than a re-do for any other poor political decision. If Hillary had decided not to run in Iowa would a re-do be called for so her voters would see her name on the ballot? Obama's unprincipled choice may have been a good tactical decision but it is turning into a strategic disaster which seems to be characteristic of his thinking.

Yes, this will be politically difficult but adherence to principle demands it.

Funny, I thought the rules said that we Democrats did not have a nominee until the vote at the Convention. Reid, Pelosi and Dean seem to be advocating special rules of their own devising.

The Delegates, both pledged and super, need to remember that they can always change their minds as they learn more about who Obama is and how he operates.

First of all, Reid and Pelosi are just puppets of the DNC, and therefore their opinion on voting should have little importance.

Obama and Clinton have the right to keep campaigning. I don't understand why so many people are so angry about what is going on here. I think this is the first in my memory that we have had a real fight on our hands. It good for the country, and IT SHOULD DEMONSTRATE TO WHOMEVER WINS THE NOMINATION THAT THEY NEED TO HAVE THE OTHER AS THE VP. If the party is truly based 50/50 as it is then, honestly there is nothing else that should be done.

This a republic, we elect people to represent our views. Evidently, our view as the party is that half of it likes Ms. Clinton and the other likes Mr. Obama.

So therefore, logic would say they need to be running mates.

Clinton, is strong where Obama is weak. Obama is strong where Clinton is weak.

It is sad that this duo that represents so much what the US is about cannot but aside there petty differences and do something for the good of this country which is in a desperate state of disrepair.

We all know that when push comes to shove, Hillary supporters will not really vote for GrandPop McCain. They will reluctantly come together and support the party and Senator Obama because we all know that McCain is the absolute wrong direction. It would be that way if Hillary actually was the nominee... Obama supporters would not jump ship once the shock wore off.

I have read the article and can relate to the Democratic leadership on they response to end this fight amongst themselves. Its appears that America has spoken on what they want and spoke LOUD about it, so why is there any need to hold up the process? The Republicans has already begun they fight against the candidate of America (OBAMA) because they already know from 2000 that the laws of this land has guaranteed that the election is won on delegates and not popular votes so what grounds are Clinton going to fight on when she don't get the delegates needed? Let's face the facts of America the conservative south has faded in the city and the city liberals have relocated to the south so it appears now that the same racist JIM CROW thought of yesterday has moved into the BIG Cities and the Big CITIES are crying injustice because WHITE America has come to do what our government has failed to do in our history and thats (UNITE) America.
For to long the names of destruction keeps getting elected because we will not accept change but always complaining about the same crooks in Washington. So Nancy, Harry, and Howard for once in your lives do what is right for the people and give them CHANGE so America can heal its wounds of injustice of experience politicians.

Obama voted against allowing people to claim self-defense if they used a gun in their home.

He also voted "present" on SB 71, which lowered the first offense of carrying a concealed weapon from a felony to a misdemeanor and raised the penalty of subsequent offenses.

In 1999, Obama voted "present" on SB 759, a bill that required mandatory adult prosecution for firing a gun on or near school grounds. The bill passed the state Senate 52-1.

Also in 1999, Obama voted "present" on HB 854 that protected the privacy of sex-abuse victims by allowing petitions to have the trial records sealed. He was the only member to not support the bill.

In 2001, Obama voted "present" on SB 609, a bill prohibiting strip clubs and other adult establishments from being within 1,000 feet of schools, churches, and daycares.

He voted present 130 times.

Because it takes affirmative votes to pass legislation in the Illinois Senate, a "present" vote is tantamount to a "no" vote. A "present" vote is generally used to provide political cover for legislators who don't want to be on the record against a bill that they oppose.

"He is what he is - a liberal Democrat,"
who has made no substantial policies important to Americans. He is hiding his real beliefs behind those present votes. What is he trying to hide form the voters.

Obama's middle-east advisor Robert Malley has been meeting with and in regular contact with Hamas. What are they talking about and why did Obama wait until he was caught to fire him.

Why did Obama have his lead foreign policy man, Zbigniew Brzezinski, travel to Syria and meet with President Assad? What promises did he make on behalf of Obama?

We have learned recently that there are phone banks being run by young palestini men in the gazi strip, calling American voters prior to primaries trying to influence their vote. Who is paying for this and how much does Obama know about it.

What kind of influence would the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr. and other leaders of Trinity United Church have on Obama's policies and how he would conduct his administration. Is there more to his relationship with Farrakhan than we know?

William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, held Obama's first political fundraiser in their home. Is there more to this relationship that we need to know.

Now, we see obama's racist church praising the a racist white priest anti-white hate sermon calling Hillary a white supremist

No, They are saying if after 15 months what else do the delegates want to know. If they can't make up their minds now what are they delegates for in the first place? It is over now vote one way or they other. I heard one SD's say like a month ago that he was waiting to see what he is offered. He wasn't just giving his vote for nothing. That is a sad commentary on the system. You give power to people who make their decisions on who offers, Lets say what it is, bribes, them the most.

And I'll be very happy to have the Clinton felons removed once and for all from the national discourse. Good riddance to Arkansas scum.

A side perk is to see all the Hildebeast Huns thrashing about in denial, spewing inane threats to bolt the party yada yada yada. They can stay p.o.ed for eternity for all I care. ;)

When the clintons begin to NEGATIVELY effect the Democratic "down ballot" vote, then the Pubpahs of our Party DECIDEDLY KNOW it is time to GET THEM OUT!

The following by Dick Morris [WJC former advisor]

"But now time is finally running out for the Clintons. They've stayed at the party too long, and it isn't a pretty sight. But they won't leave gracefully. No way! They still believe that there's a chance to win. And they'll do ANYTHING to make that happen."

Because they just "have to win".

Clinton has taken Kentucky and Obama is right there in Oregon.
The Democratic race for nomination is still very much alive - and most likely to be decided by superdelegates - as CNN points out clearly

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/20/primary.wrap/index.html

If you're tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama

If you haven't done so yet, please write a message to each of your state's superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com

Obama Supporters:

Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It's that easy...

Clinton Supporters too .... !

It takes a moment, but what's a few minutes now worth to get Clinton in office?! Those are really worth !

Sending a note to current Clinton supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Obama supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Clinton, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Clinton. It's that easy...

Whatever colors he is, Obama surrounds himself with divisive, angry people and pretends to be shocked, shocked that they're saying what they always said.

This man is dangerous, and the people he'll bring with him are more dangerous.

He's unqualified, unprepared, has too much baggage in his radical friends and will lose the unlosable election.

Hillary wasn't my first choice, but she sure is now. She's got grit, determination and a helluva lot of courage to keep going in the face of an Obama-adoring media who lost their critical faculties in the face of the rock star of Hope! and Change!

She's all that stands between us and the disaster of such a neophyte's presidency.

I -- and just about everyone I know -- plan to skip the Presidential column and just vote for local Democrats in November if Obama is the nominee.

Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi can't force this one down our throats. I'd rather suffer McCain than Obama's empty rhetoric and divisive associates.

jeffp : Stick a fork in the bottom of our junior senator's ugly pantsuit. That big fat delusional witch is done.

---------------------------------

When the pundits try to make sense of the Obama loss-by-landslide in November they need to look no further than the above posts. In them contain all of the attitude, eliteism and ignorance you need to have to lose an election. Senator Obama's supporters are a vocal bunch. They are young, passionate and very, very dumb. You cannot win an election by pissing off the 49% of democrats who didn't vote for your guy. Nice that you're all so humbled by victory in the nomination. Don't bother calling me in November, I'm going to be too busy to vote that day...

Posted by: Airjoe | May 30, 2008 7:16 AM | Report abuse

What is everyone so upset about? If Obama is getting the nomination in August by such a landslide, then where is the harm in letting Hillary exercize her right to continue to campaign? It seems to me Pelosi and Reid are overstepping their bounds more than a little to decide that they should "step in". Excuse me, but Hillary should be able to campaign if she wants to. Half of Democrats still prefer her over Obama, remember? The DNC and the Obama supporters who no longer even try very hard to hide their Obama bias have done more damage to the Democratic Party than all the Republicans put together. If Hillary is "stopped" then I will vote McCain on principal. The Democrats should be ashamed of themselves for trying to stifle legitimate dialog and trying to ordain the outcome of the nominating process. They don't deserve the White House.

Posted by: lhen | May 30, 2008 6:51 AM | Report abuse

The final primaries will be held. At the convention, the delegates will vote. Nobody HAS TO pull out for someone to win. So if Obama wons, fine, it will happen at the convention. But stop whining and threatening for Clinton to "pull out". It is unprecedented that someone with half the vote (probably more after Tuesday) should be "ordered" out of a race.

Still Hillary even at the eleventh hour can't accept she has lost! and attempts to create more division calling on supporters to protest and trying to find any subject they can throw at Senator Barack Obama, the latest the comments from the Priest, Barack Obama says it was wrong what the Priest said, but this is not good enough for Hillary, she need to stir up even more bad feelings.

Who could have ever predicted that this is how Hillary's political career would end up seeming a sad old bitter lady not willing to accept defeat.

To Democrats: Don't be discouraged by the vile comments about Obama by "supporters" of Hillary. These are obviously right-wing nuts posting as supposed Democrats just trying to cause chaos within' the party. No real Democrat would be saying such ignorant and destructive things. If a few of these comments happen to be by "Democrats" who support Hillary, fine. Let them be bitter and cynical. Let them join the Republicans. We don't need their toxicity in a our party. As evidenced by the primary results, they are a small and diminishing minority. The final days of the pandering, triangulating, flip-flopping, Republican-lite DLC are upon us.

Obama, the 2000 version of GWB, having less popular votes, losing every single important state, is put on top by Peloci, Dean and the rest of DNC bosses.

Obama, whose church and congregation have been smearing and degrading Senator Clinton with the worst foul language, is essentially declaring war on Hillary by refusing to denounce the offensive remarks against Hillary first by Wright and now by Phleiger.

I see this fight go all the way to the convention. Let DNC puts on record denying voices of millions from two big states.

Gallup Poll: Clinton Stronger in Swing States
Gallup Poll: "In the 20 states where Hillary Clinton has claimed victory in the 2008 Democratic primary and caucus elections (winning the popular vote), she has led John McCain in Gallup Poll Daily trial heats for the general election over the past two weeks of Gallup Poll Daily tracking by 50% to 43%. This is another symptom of our instant gratification society. A society that wants its results quickly and painlessly.

Our Puritan work ethic roots continue to decay.

"Spare us any unpleasant debate!" Our society seems to say. The drums for the end of the race started beating loudly in February. Barely two months into the race.

Such sentiment contributed to our invasion of Iraq.

In the past, nominations went to the convention. No one thought anything much of it causing any harm. No quick decisions had to be made. We took our time, we toughed it out.

But in the new millenium, things are different.

It's the internet age, the Ipod age, the cable television age.

We don't like to things because they hard, we like to do them because they are easy.

Hillary supporters have no interest in following Hillary's example if she chooses to support Obama. The rude attacks on her during the last few days give no rationale for supporting a candidate who was imposed on the party by DNC and the media. Without the media solidly behind him, Obama had hardly any chance of being a viable candidate against Hillary. Sorry, the democratic party is going to face a revolt from within unless this injustice is mitigated in some way.

Maybe Pelosi, Reid and Dean should look back on the rules they implemented: the blame for the unresolved situation is squarely on the Rules and Bylaws Committee, The DNC ignored a violation to the nominating calendar by New Hampshire, which was one of four states (including Iowa, South Carolina and New Mexico) granted the right to hold its contest ahead of the Feb. 5 cut-off but was slated to hold the third contest in the calendar. In fact, New Hampshire was second to Iowa.
When the Rules and Bylaws Committee itself decided not to follow its own newly adopted, hard-fought rules and granted a waiver to New Hampshire, it set the stage for the present situation.
Michigan had applied for a waiver and it wasn't granted. The state then held its primary early anyway.
SO what's good for the goose is good for the gander, now maybe NH, Iowa, New Mexico and South Carolina shouldn't have their delegates seated also.

The problem Obama has with white uneducated voters is they never had the fine points of race and racism explained to them by learned professors. Not having a higher education to reply upon they must substitute common sense.

1.They have a very hard time understanding how anyone with any intelligence can sit in a Church for 20 years and support ones friend and mentor week after week, month after month, year after year with his money, family and attendance while listening to Hate American, Hate whites, Hate every thing rants, (with the exception of Blacks and Muslins) and still insist that he has not endorsed and does not believe in the Message, and he has not endorsed and does not believe in the MESSENGER.
2.They do not understand why believing in God, lovering this Nation, supporting the second Amendment, supporting Article IV Section IV of our Constitution against Invasion, and supporting the rule of Law, apparently believing in our Constitution and the Rule of Law, makes them intelligibly inferior, bitter and the object of scorn and ridicule by Obama and his Cult followers!

Posted by: The Oracle | May 29, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

I noticed Rachel Rae caused a lot of flak in the news this morning. One of the early morning talk shows had the hosts showing Rachel's picture with a scarf around her neck, and it was said it was an Arab scarf. THey were laughing and making fun of her. Then later in the day I saw where her sponsor took that picture out of their advertising because it caused such a furor - and the cable news showed a picture of her with the scarf, and the same scarf as an Arab head scarf.

Now, to the point of this situation. I have been on this blog for awhile explaining that Barack Obama has not been truthful about his family's ethnicity and his own ethnicity.

I have pointed out that Barack Obama's father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., was an Arab who was a terrorist in the Kenyatta group. The Kenyatta group pillaged, burned, raped and murdered for their cause.

Now, in Barack's book, he simply says his father had a "wild streak." His father was more than just a wild streak, he was an Arab terrorist. I didn't dub him an Arab, that is how the Kenyan Government has recorded him.

The reason the Rachel Rae ordeal is significant, to me is that many Obama supporters have been ragging me out, saying, what difference does it make if Obama is Arab-American and not African-american as he claims.

It must make a difference, because Barack Obama will not releast his birth certificate. Barack Obama has a long and serious history of lying. When will the American public get the message that this is a serious flaw for a presidential candidate.

Sure, Hillary has embellished a few stories, and I haven't liked her mis-speaks either, but her few mis-speaks are easier to accept than the hundreds of lies Obama has told about his past.

I have been researching Obama for months now, and he has had so many anti-American associations, terrorist associations, and corrupt Chicago Way political associations, including even Antoin Rezko who was a friend and ally of Kadhmi Auchi

If Clinton doesn't have the grace and decency to do what Al Gore did in 2000 to throw in the towel rather than disrupting American society just for some marginal chance that she might eventually win, isn't that all the more reason why she is not fit to be president?

Yes, Pelosi is off the table. Sheehan is showing 9% support vs 66% for Pelosi in the only poll I can find, so as long as she can change the rules to turn 9% into victory, she will win and Pelosi will be no more!

Posted by: LunacyDoesPrevail! | May 29, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Well --- he just needs 36% of the Puerto Rican vote and 57% of the Montana and South Dakota votes along with 51% of the remaining Super delegates and he needs zero delegates from Michigan and Florida - Zero.

If he does get any delegates from either Michigan and/or Florida he needs far fewer Super delegates to clinch. In fact, she could get 70% of the remaining supper delegates and he would still win.

I hear the fat lady warming up.

It will be so nice to end this fighting. The Republicans are the real enemy, so let's get to fighting them.

Obama will win a landslide victory, by mobilizing a massive get out the vote campaign across the nation. Obama doesnt just want to win the election, - he wants a political mandate and a Democratic majority that is filibuster-proof.

Obama is going to win Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio and maybe even Georgia and Nevada. McCain does not even have the support of conservatives.

Finally, we will have a sensible foreign policy and start spending our money to re-build America, not Iraq.

She won't be back in 2012 either. With all the garbage she has pulled in this campaign, coupled with the court problems she is having from her 2000 Senate race, she will be entirely out of politics by 2012 and living off fat book royalties.

SC broke the very same rules as FL and MI. Why do SC voters and delegates get to count? Because Donna Brazile, of the Rules Committee granted an illegal "waiver" to SC.

They all keep saying we have to play by the rules, o.k., let's play by the rules. SC doesn't get to count, either.

Also, I saw a video of Howard Dean in August 2006 in Chicago saying that anyone who paid for campaign advertising in FL or MI would not get any delegates.

Obama/Axelrod very underhandidly did pay for campaign advertising nationwide that played in MI and FL 8 to 10 times a day for two weeks. Also, for Michigan, the Obama camp sent a talking points memo to Wolf Blitzer of CNN and he campaigned for Obama 24/7 telling them to vote Uncommitted and that would mean Obama.

Donna Brazile is an Obama supporter. She has campaigned for Obama and against Hillary on CNN every week. She should be barred from the Rules Committee. So should Nancy Pelosi be barred from running the Convention. Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama and Michelle and Oprah, and Bill Richardson, and John Kerry, and Tom Daschle make me want to throw up. gw.

Posted by: Iowatreasures | May 29, 2008 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Pelosi's actions are entirely wrong & un-democratic.

Pelosi has obviously not read the DNC Rules.

Obama ran Television Campaign ads here in Florida and I and every other Floridian have seen them.

That is campaigning per DNC Rules.

The DNC Rules state that any presidential candidate that campaigns in such a state will 'Lose All 'Their Delegates'. It does not say 'Some', Pledged', 'Auto', or 'Super'' - It Says 'ALL'.

This means if the DNC Rules are actually followed, Clinton gets half her delegates & Obama gets NONE....and you wonder why he privately fought against them counting and publicly came off with his bland statements of 'whatever the DNC says'.

We, here in Florida, know what is going on. The DNC & the Old Political Democrat Guard want back in power at any cost.

We have seen the Same Old Politics in Obama and NO CHANGE WHATSOEVER.

His claims of change to us are a complete farce.

He has fought at every turn to stop our votes.

That is Un-American.

They want you to believe that this is simply 'breaking the rules', but, this is an election - not a football game.

Our Republican Legislature caused this and per the rules, the DNC has the legal right & Obligation to waive any and all penalties for Florida.

I do not know about Michigan, other than Obama clearly stopped a ready re-vote.

The Old Washington Democrat Political Bunch saw an opening that was created by the other Republican Mafia Bunch and are in a mafia like fight for control of our country.

Our Media has also played a significant role in this just like they did when Bush ran for office, and look what we got.

We, here in Florida will vote Republican this fall regardless of what you do and say about Mccain, because, now, we are on to you.

We are realizing that the Media has become a corrupt politcal instrument and we don't like what we see.

Obama's Camp supposes they can use the same politcal map as Andrew Jackson did when he won the Presidency.

That too gave us a corrupt administration that turned on their American Indian Allies, forcing them from their lands, in direct conflict with the Supreme Court of these United States who ruled in favor of the Cherokee in North Carolina (and Georgia at the time). Jackson told the Supreme Court, ''you made the law, you enforce the law' and then proceeded to order our troops to force march an entire nation, men, women, children, old and young, halfway across the country killing thousands.

But, that was then and this is now, or is it?

To quote Forest Gump - 'stupid is as stupid does'.

Posted by: 1ahead | May 29, 2008 9:19 PM | Report abuse

The most democratic solution for both Florida and Michigan is to penalize both states by stripping them of their superdelegates (those party-types who are most responsible for messing up, or failing to prevent the messing up, of this whole thing in the first place) and replacing them with "regular" so-called pledged delegates who will be apportioned according to the voting that took place when it did. That means both states would still get their full allotment of delegates (157 in Michigan and 211 in Florida), but a price for breaking the rules would be paid by those who had the most power to enforce them and not by everyone else.

Even more important, is that the DNC hasn't explicitly said these two states wouldn't be seated. So if Clinton knows there will not be full seating from these states, why does she stay in? I know she says to have the popular vote, but she won't have it unless all the delegates are seated.

Obama is clearly the nominee. The electable argument isn't going to work because if the majority of people wanted to elect her, it would be reflected in this race.
I am not against Clinton but I am against her reasons for staying in the race. Furthermore, I think she is in it to make a "point". Well, point well taken Senator Clinton. Now, step aside for the good of your party and support the nominee.

Abbadotti,

Your state WA had both a primary and caucus. How do you explain the big discrepancy between the low turn out caucus and much more representative primary? Obama got away way more delegates than he really deserved.

FYI realclearpolitics has and "estimate" on caucus votes, even adding the estimate Hillary is still leading the popular votes. If you count Florida and Michigan, any way you slice it, Hillary is leading the popular votes and the lead is only going to get bigger.

Carter and Obama as reported by the late Hamilton Jordon: "But the two have more in common than meets the eye. Both were largely unknown to the nation's Democrats at the start of their election years. Both faced more-credentialed rivals. Both ran as outsiders, vowing to reform Washington. Both relied on generalized promises to raise politics to a higher standard than that practiced by an outgoing Republican administration. Both benefited from early plurality victories over large and divided fields. Obama gained his first and most important win in Iowa with 37.6 percent of the votes, while Hillary Clinton and John Edwards split almost 60 percent evenly. Both Carter and Obama lost several late primaries but held on to the delegate lead they had staked out earlier.

Of course, Obama has yet to win the White House, but it is almost as if Jordan were warning him that his toughest challenge will come when he sets out to govern against the grain of his own party. Because Carter ran against the Washington establishment, he had no claim on their loyalty -- and they easily spurned him, Jordan told his interviewers. Because he sought to appease them by giving the vice presidency to one of their own, Walter Mondale, they scorned him, too! And because he tried to flatter them by giving key places in his administration to some of them, he faced continual rebellions within his own White House and Cabinet.

This is the cautionary tale Obama and his brain trust could find in Jordan's interview. Obama, too, has profited from fragmentation in the Democratic Party that has (wrongly) allowed a long shot, once again, to capture its greatest prize. But if he is elected, he will have to solve the problems of fragmentation that doomed Jimmy Carter. SAD Pelosi and the worse -Reid ineffective as Carter and going down.

VOTE HILLARY ALL THE WAY!

Cori- a Bellingham voter here...
I've been trying to ask this question on all the chats this week and so far no takers. I am going to try Weisman tomorrow...
My understanding is that Clinton's "I have the lead in the popular vote" gambit only works to her advantage if HRC:

1) Does NOT count the votes cast in caucus states such as WA, including those of hundreds of thousands of women. (Thanks HRC, I guess the TWO Saturdays I spent at my precinct and county caucuses make me too elitist for my vote to count).

And then, on top of that, to win the nomination she must:

2) convince the super delegates to throw out/override ALL the popular vote and grant her the nomination, because in her mind coming close means winning.

Don't forget that she also gives Obama ZERO votes for Michigan.

In the words of the Simpson's Mr Burns, "THAT'S democracy for you!"

As far as her "I lead this and I lead that" from her letter to the supers today, check the box in the upper right corner of the RealClearPolitics home page:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/

As of this evening Obama leads in Total delegates, super delegates, pledged delegates, POPULAR VOTE, popular vote INCLUDING FLORIDA, the national polls Obama vs Clinton (+8.5 points). He also is beating McCain in Penn, Ohio, Wis, and Cali and is 9 points closer to him in Virginia (wow, with Obama Virginia is in play, sweet! :-).

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi are pushing to wrap up the Democratic nomination. Not so fast. Florida and Michigan matters. Why not impose a monetary penalty to the Democratic Leaders/Party of FL and MI? Voters in Michigan and Florida are not guilty of this political mess. If Obama is so strong, why not have a re-do primaries in FL and MI according to DNC rules and regulations? Finally, why it was fine/ok for Senator Ted Kennedy to go all the way to the convention against Carter? After all, Senator Ted Kennedy was over 700 delegates behind Carter. That is not the case of Senator Hillary Clinton. This race is very close. Well, I will tell you why Ted Kennedy was able to go all the way to the convention. Because he was a man Because he was a Kennedy. Be fair.

The Michigan and Florida votes were tallied and since Clinton kept her name on the ballot when she was not supposed to, she became the clear winner of those primaries. Clinton supported the DNC's decisions until she realized how vital it was that she get the votes that she herself did not intend the party to count. Her decisions are not based on enfranchising voters, but on giving her campaign an unfounded and unfair advantage.

Since no one has answered my question--how have the Clintons accounted for the caucus states in their calculation of the popular vote--I will assume they have not. That suggests to me that they are attempting to "enfranchise" Florida and Michigan--where she "won"--st the expense of disenfranchising the caucus states where she lost.
BTW, I am from WA, where she lost. I am an Independent who didn't caucus and would have voted voted the Democratic candidate no matter who won, but I am getting very tired of all this infighting. It is very detrimental to the Democratic party.

Clinton supported the DNC calendar and refused to grant Michigan and Florida permission to change their primary dates. Clinton has no justification for arguing to count any votes in those states; it's self-serving and undemocratic, because it went against a democratically elected primary calendar.

How is it that politicians have come to embrace the idea, that it is okay to cancel out delegates, and votes. The long and the short of this is, that one Candidate played the experience card well and kept her name in the elections, the other Candidate was ill served by its election campaign and the end result was that he was left hold the obvious. Now it seems that the Political Boy's Club want to help one of its members with his problem. So what are they doing? They are manufacturing, fabrication election results for him. They continue to say that they want to be fair. If you want to be fair, you levy a heavy fine against the those State Democratic Parties or make sure that those involved in the decision to violate the DNC Charter get banned from participating in the Party's Political activities for 5 years. That is how you play the game and how you keep those Political Animals in check.

Maybe she misspoke -- although she misspoke similarly at least once before. Or maybe it was a Freudian slip? Barack Obama, charitable as usual, attributed her remark to campaign fatigue, and no doubt that was part of the explanation for it.

"We agree there won't be a fight at the convention" means the SDs are united against Hillary on the FL and MI bit. She can fight about it but she will lose.

It's pretty clear that there is a significant amount of personal enmity towards Hillary Clinton, from which Obama has benefited. Novak reported yesterday that many Dems are looking at Hillary the same way Repubs have for 16 years; it looks like SDs aren't too much different in attitude than the party as a whole.

To that extent, then, the whole bit about having an argument for SDs to support Hillary is beside the point; their personal animosity, plus Obama's delegate lead, gives them all the reason they need to go with their heart and oppose Hillary. It would interesting for a reporter to investigate this line.

The Big Change has no substance. We are now seeing the old type politics that Chicago is known for. Senator Obama is a politician, nothing more and nothing less. Can we afford to lose again? Or even worse to put forth someone who has not yet found himself and his political identity? Bush also said he was a "uniter". I have seen no evidence of Senator Obama uniting in this campaign or in his limited votes in either senate. We the people want the process to unfold natually without force from above. Impatience will likely defeat the party.

We can safely say now that Hillary's realistic bid is over (has been for awhile...). Will she agree and drop out, or make a scene through Denver?

2000 The Presidential election was so close
that the Supreme Court decided who would
be our President. We got shafted with
the choice of Bush.

2004 Another close Presidential race is
decided by one state (Ohio). Questionable
voting machine practices tipped the election
towards Bush's favor.

If we stand by, and allow the DNC to
carry on this tradition of raping our
Democracy... WE GET WHAT WE DESERVE!!!

Show up in support of DEMOCRACY - SHOW UP
IN OPPOSITION OF THE Hillary Fascists!!!

DEMAND THAT THEY UPHOLD THEIR 'WORD' -
Our country is a country of laws and
founded on personal and communal
integrity.

We do NOT live in Russia - Our elections
deserve to be fair and balanced. Allowing
Hillary anything out of these two elections
would prove that we are now a Theocratic Corporate Fascist State!

HILLARY AND HER SUPPORTERS ARE ON THE VERGE OF RUINING A LONG POLITICAL CAREER.
IF SHE CAN NOT GET HER FEMALE BACKERS TO GET OBAMA IN THEY WILL BLAME HER.THEN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WILL DISASSEMBLE HER CAREER. SHE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT OR ANYTHING ELSE.TO SAVE HER CAREER SHE NEEDS TO LEAVE WITH GRACE AND DIGNITY. IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT HER SUPPORTERS CAN RUIN HER CAREER. THEY CAN RUIN ALL SHE HAS WORKED FOR BY VOTING MCCAIN. I CAN'T BLEIVE THEY ARE THAT STUPID. THE DNC SENIOR MEMBERS BY SAYING "IT'S OVER" NEXT WEEK HAS GIVEN HILLARY A WARNING.
