Clinton Denies Plans to Concede Tonight

By Anne E. Kornblut
NEW YORK -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's denied a news report that she plans to concede the Democratic nomination to Sen. Barack Obama tonight amid confusion about the timing of what appears a likely withdrawal or suspension of her candidacy sometime this week.

The Associated Press, quoting sources, said Clinton planned to acknowledge tonight at her rally here in New York that Obama has the necessary delegates to secure the nomination. But shortly after the story was published, the campaign issued a statement saying: "The AP story is incorrect. Senator Clinton will not concede the nomination this evening."

The AP report caught many Clinton staffers by surprise. One said they were operating on the assumption that she would not concede tonight and were working on her prepared remarks as they were trying to knock down the report that she was ready to give up now.

But her advisers, in private conversations with senior Democrats and Democratic aides, have indicated that she recognizes the likelihood that Obama will secure the nomination tonight or tomorrow with the support of additional superdelegates and that she is prepared to yield to that reality.

Clinton aides have said she is still determined not to be forced out on someone else's timing and wants to take time on Wednesday to assess and make the necessary calls to supporters and advisers before conceding. That would put a suspension or withdrawal no earlier than Wednesday.

Another Clinton adviser acknowledged that a possible concession "is a work in progress" and that the discussions are tightly held within the campaign, involving only a few trusted advisers. They include campaign manager Maggie Williams, chief of staff Cheryl Mills and few others, according to campaign officials.

Clinton will speak tonight after the polls close in Montana and South Dakota.

Obama is expected to pick up more superdelegates today, including a group of officials from Montana after the polls close there. But other uncommitted senators have been urged to wait until Wednesday to announce their support for Obama out of deference to Clinton.

For someone to say they are going to vote for Mccain as opposed to Obama they would have to be either extremely uneducated or would have to perhaps be extremely financially and socially conservative. As we all should know, the next president will have the oppurtunity to appoint several federal reserve governors and likely replace a couple of the more liberal supreme court justices. Now It certainly seems plausible to me that some older white people in this country are democrats for traditional reasons but are really financial conservatives and wouldn't mind a good excuse to vote that way- Not sure why they aren't worried about their granddaughters ability to be able to get a legal abortion however.

I will vote for McCain in November to teach these arrogant super delegates a lesson. Clinton is obviously the people's choice because she has the most votes.

Obama is a muslim spy 20 years in the making. i will never vote for him

well, the voters will have 2 choices, obama or McCain. Is Obama a more qualified leader than George Bush? Point to an accomplishment, a piece of legislation, something. Of ya, "if he had been in congress" he would not have voted to go to war. Well, after the fact "W" probably wouldn't have either. So do you vote for another trainee? don't vote at all? or McCain?

"I was going to vote Hillary but now I'm voting McCain." Might as well say, "I was always going to vote for McCain even if Hillary won the nomination." Same freaking difference. No one can prove what you were going to do or not do. Your only aim is to hope to hurt someone who feels differently by spreading useless comments about what you would have done IF...who cares? Go masturbate in private. No one needs to see that.

at the end of the day we will have another republican president. instead of positioning the party for the GE they just pushed pbama to the front line ignoring the populat vote for hillary.
with mccain i will pay less taxes

Posted by: Anonymous | June 3, 2008 7:10 PM

HRC has the popular vote. the people want clinton as president. it is a shame that the party pushed obama down our throat. I am so diappointed with the democratic party - i am done with it. no more money from me.
i am joining the democrats for mccain!!!

Posted by: Anonymous | June 3, 2008 7:07 PM

Vote McCain Hillary People! Clintons and Bushes are the same as McCain anyway. Bush brought you endless war and 4 dollar gas. McCain will keep the trend going. Great choice! Keep your head down and run to your vehicles (giggle giggle). How come Billary are now whining about the "fun part"?

Posted by: Dave Miner | June 3, 2008 7:07 PM

obama has no experience. he was only few weeks in the senate and we really don't know anything about him.
I DON'T TRUST HIM !!!!
If HRC is not the presidential candidate I will vote republican. Mccain at least likes this country.
go hillary run as independent you will win

Posted by: liora | June 3, 2008 7:04 PM

i am educated upper middle class and i support HRC. now that she is out i will vote rebublican. obama is just not ready to be president and i cannot support him. maybe in a few year after having some history in the senate. HRC as VP is not enough for me.

Posted by: miriam | June 3, 2008 6:59 PM

You know, I've just about had it with "the rules." Even Nazi SS Guards had "rules." But some rules are just plain stupid. When a major political party was robbed of an election as ours was in 2000, because the votes were not counted, the same party should never, never, never have painted itself into a corner to not count votes. The battle cry should have been "Never again! Count all the votes." This year, we have the most amazingly stupid collection of convoluted rules ever written. And the result is a large portion of the party's members are angry. As far as I'm concerned, one person = one vote is a basis of democracy, as is the secret ballot. This nominating process has been a sham. Vote against the Democratic Party in November. I am a lifelong Democrat, a Bobby Kennedy Democrat, a Hillary Clinton Democrat, and, it looks like I'll be a John McCain Voter in November. I have no intention of staying home. I will vote. But not for the DNC, their "rules," their sexism, and their collaboration with the mass media to trash a highly qualified candidate. I may be one person. But I see what happened. And I will not participate in the Democratic Party again.

********************************************

To the INTELLIGENT, RATIONAL, HONORABLE HILLARY SUPPORTERS **

Do you really want these MESSAGES to be HRC's LEGACY -

1. RULES are for suckers - agreeing to them and then changing them mid-game is the NEW WAY.

2. If you cannot win on merit, whine, backstab, spread rumors / untruths until victory is yours.

3. Threaten to scuttle the ship if you are not made captain. That shows your deep love for the ship.

Imagine how these precepts (and I could go on) will affect our lives, our society and economy.

SO PLEASE think about it and DO THE RIGHT THING. I started out with a lot of admiration for Bill and Hillary - but gradually I have had to see (and weigh) the pluses and minuses.

Life will go on ... there won't be any miraculous improvements - no matter who is the (non-Con) candidate! Once we jettison our ethics, civility, rational cooperative problem-solving, focus on real issues - this country is toast - no matter who is the leader.

Let us UNITE behind a candidate before it is too late!

** There will always be a "passionate" few who are unable to separate emotional attachment from rational thinking - but I hope that most of you are indeed honorable, fair minded folks!

********************************************

BTW, About Bill's supposed outburst -

Calling a spade a spade ... or in this case ... a sleazeball a sleazeball is IMHO a courageous act that is too rare these days.

Making unsubstantiated allegations and spreading rumors are detestable practices that the "respectable" media now share with the tabloid media.

BTW, I still have some regard for Bill even though I think Hillary needs to graciously concede and support Barack's campaign from now on.

Adding that to show that one can recognize abhorrent practices even when they are practiced on someone you are not supporting.

As then she now looks just as pathetic and everyone wishes that she would just go home(and take that goofy family with her). Saying that he listened to hate for 20 years is silly. How do you know this and if so how has HIS actions reflected this. It was HRC that introduced race, hints that he is muslim, assasination and such. She went to far................
There is a difference between a church sermon and a speech.

Why is that being silly? Why is it now that Obama is distant himself from his own church? What is he so afraid that he has to distant himself?

How can you support someone who has been listening to HATE being preached for the past 20 yrs. Obviously, these informations are falling on deaf ears. And yet, voters are hoping for a better next 4 yrs. What? My votes don't count because I broke the rules?

I voted for Hillary, but honestly, every time she speaks now, I cringe. If my primary was in the last month, I would not have a problem voting for Obama. When I did vote, I made up my mind in the voting booth. I almost had to flip a coin, it was so close. But now, after all the "I am ahead in the popular vote" crap, when Obama's name was not on the ballot, (Because he followed the directions of the DNC, when Hillary did NOT) the racist comments, and the desperate measures, I am fully behind Obama. I hope he can lead us out of the last 8 years worth of mess that the Bush Administration has gotten us into.

The press underestimates how much the public hates Obama and no amount of media pressure can change that. There would be no Democratic support for Obama since he stole the nomination by cutting out two states. The public has spoken and the public wants Hillary for President. Clinton is staying in to win.

Posted by: Sal | June 3, 2008 12:41 PM

The public does not hate Obama. They hate what he stands for. Just like many Russians hated what Lenin and Stalin stood for and many Germans hated what Hitler and the NAZI party stood for.

Those Democrats of morality, honor and ethics need to MAKE a STAND against the DNC Insiders who are trying to HighJack Democracy and who have awarded delegates to a candidate who along with John Edwards took his name off the ballot in Michigan. This is the LARGEST and GROSSEST Miscarriage of Democracy in the short History of your Country. There is no precedent for it. We must Stand up to the FACISTS Who think they can allocate uncommmited ballots all for one candidate and even more. This is a GROSS CRIME. Do not let Carl Levin, John Edwards, Howard Dean and Obama violate the voters and will of the American people. The uncommitted voters should be uncommitted delegates. Since when does UNCOMMITTED mean Obama. Look up the world uncommitted in the Oxford Dictionary which people use in the UK, Continental Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Japan, ... And we all know. Only in the USA DNC Dictionary does UNCOMMITTED mean Obama. Sad distortion of the English language. It is a disrepect to call what we speak in the USA English. We need to call it American, since it has almost no relation to Oxford English when such a simple word like UNCOMMITTED can be so distorted by Howard Dean, Carl Levin, John Edwards, Obama and the DNC Insiders. They would have all flunked their A levels in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada and never made it to the Univeristy. If they had not, the USA (and the Democratic Party) Would not face the Problems it now faces. It shows you what can go wrong by giving an education and a title to uneducated, amoral and unethical people like Carl Levin, John Edwards, Howard Dean, Obama and the DNC Insiders which supported defining the Oxford English word UNCOMMITTED to mean Obama.

Posted by: Aussie2020 | June 3, 2008 1:12 PM

She is NOT ahead in the popular vote:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/06/the_people_have_spoken.html?hpid=topnews

But I don't think she'll have the character or honesty to admit that in her speech tonight - sadly.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 3, 2008 12:57 PM

Does the AP still believe that there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and that American astronauts really set foot on the moon, there is a tooth fairy, that Iraqi soldiers actually took Kuwaiti babies from incubators, that Obama can win the election, that there will be no retrubution for allocating delegates to Obama in Michigan when Obama, John Edwards, Carl Levin and Howard Dean colluded to screw Hillary and Democracy supporters in Michigan, ...
When will the American AP learn to check the facts. They are an embarrassment to every American citizen living and working overseas. But it starts are out so-called top journalism schools and business schools. The top business school graduates brought us Enron business and accounting practices, insiders trading, the sub prime mortage crisis, the student loan crisis, ... and the top journalism schools gives us journalists who have supposedly confirmed weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Iraqi soldiers taking Kuwaiti babies from incubators, Obama leading the popular vote, ... All lies, propaganda, misinformation, ... The Press in the USA has stooped to the lowests levels in the history of the USA. But it is not an oppressive government which has seized control, but private and business interests who not only distort the news, present half truths which are taken out of context and are actually lies and fabrications, like the case in Texas with the children. Now after two months ... If the Press was on the case from Day one, the children would have been returned a long time ago. We need a new generation of business leaders, university professors, journalists and politicans who are American first and who will not fill their pocket books with special interest and lobbist dollars. It is also that way with many university academics and scientists and researchers working for major pharmaceutical companies and even many at the FDA, NSF and NIH. Time to train and educate our children in ethics, respect, and responsibility, character traits which are sorely missing in Washington, among AP journalists, university professors, priests, pastors, ministers, mullahs, ... American really needs to do some soul searching and it can start with the DNC Insiders, Obama, Howard Dean, Carl Levin and John Edwards reexamining the Crimes Against Democracy and the USA by awarding any delegates to Obama in Michigan when Obama and John Edwards took their names off the ballot. How is that for ethics? Take your name off the ballot to stand up for principles, and then demand more delegates than the number of votes who voted uncommitted (many of the uncommitted, were just that, uncommitted, they WERE NOT for Obama, they were uncommitted). But then Obama, John Edwards, Howard Dean and Carl Levin have a very limited command of Oxford English. They have their own DNC Insiders' English dictionary, where Uncommitted means Obama.
They are a total joke and have not only made the DNC the laughing stock in all Democracies of the world, but also make America look like the bloody idiots we are. To let a small group of DNC Insiders highjack the Democratic Party, with the help of special interests, the AP jounalists is exactly what the German people allowed the Hitler Insiders and the German Press to do in Germany, which allowed Hitler to come to power. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN in the USA. Make sure all of the votes are counted and the delegates ARE ALLOCATED ONLY TO CANDIDATES Who got votes. An an UNCOMMITTED vote is NOT a vote for Obama. Only Howard Dean, Obama, Carl Levin, John Edwards and the DNC Insiders would allow such a miscarriage of democracy to occur under their watch. The will do anything to win, just like Hitler and his Insiders in Germany. If they will pull this stunt just to steal the nomination from Hillary, what do you think they will stoop to if they get elected. God Forbid that we ever find that out.
Democrats for McCain, to prevent that scenario from ever occurring.

How fitting that Hillary has found the most appropriate way to spend the final day of the Democratic primary season - refuting an internal leak, sending mixed messages, and putting her undisciplined staff and poor management skills on display.

Her campaign has been a mess...I don't know why anyone expected the final day to be any different.

Oh and Clinton is expected to win SD and at least tie in Montana. Superdelegates are noticing that Obama has lost every race since the Rev. Wright debacle. The press keeps making up stories trying to force Clinton to concede. Yet the polls show she is winning, she has the popular vote and won the swing states. Why would Clinton concede when she is the winner?

The press underestimates how much the public hates Obama and no amount of media pressure can change that. There would be no Democratic support for Obama since he stole the nomination by cutting out two states. The public has spoken and the public wants Hillary for President. Clinton is staying in to win.

For the sake of UNITY in our party, Hillary,
PLEASE let this be over tonight.

This is all spin to let the campaign off the hook and vehemently deny the AP story about concession tonight. Where there's smoke, there's got to be fire. So a Hillary withdrawal is coming. Just maybe not tonight. One more tweak of Obama before it's all over...

That depends on how you define "Concede"...

Posted by: Bill Clinton | June 3, 2008 12:32 PM

Of course Hillary denies it! Hillary will parse words such that her speech tonight will sound like a concession but the trigger words like "concede" and "end" will not be in the speech. Hillary will probably acknowledge Obama may reach the delegate number threshold, but that she has the total popular vote (i.e. more spin and creative math)!

Hillary needs funds to pay off her campaign debts (including personal loans). She has got to be somewhere between $21 to $25 million in debt.
