Dan Balz's Take

The Content of Their Characters

GOP presidential candidate John McCain, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

By Dan Balz
Barack Obama and John McCain have shown remarkable resilience and political skill in navigating to the starting line of the general election. But their victories also underscored another reality as they begin the general election. Neither is a wholly finished candidate.

Obama and McCain share an important attribute, which both demonstrated in winning their party's presidential nominations: perseverance in the face of adversity and challenge.

The Republican race turned on the question of who would be the last candidate standing. It's easy therefore to describe McCain's victory as one in which his rivals had as much to do with his success as he did. But the reality is that McCain's comeback from a descent into near-irrelevance 11 months ago was as much the result of personal fortitude and resilience as it was the mistakes of others.

Few other candidates would have, let alone could have, weathered what he and his campaign went through. For anyone who doubted his resolve -- and given his experience as a Vietnam POW, there can be few doubters -- McCain again showed a fundamental character trait that cannot be underestimated.

"Senator McCain's number one quality during the primaries was his unique ability to manage the high profile crisis his campaign experienced when it imploded around him and still effectively communicated his core themes to Republican voters," wrote Republican strategist Ron Bonjean.

As John Weaver, McCain's former top adviser put it over the weekend, "The most obvious strength exhibited was perseverance, as he gutted out a tough win in New Hampshire literally on his back. No creative strategy; no fancy messaging; just an old warrior taking to the political battlefield. Clearly this is an important trait in any successful President, as they have to navigate dark days from time to time. However, the positive trait 'perseverance' can turn into its more negative cousin 'stubbornness' and we've seen recently where that can lead the country."

Obama's steadiness as he fought off early doubts about his message and strategy, then weathered a series of controversies, is just as remarkable, given his limited experience on the national stage. Staring down the Clinton machine certainly did toughen him, as he said in the closing days of the competition with Hillary Clinton.

"At no point did he seem intimidated by the process, the large stage he was playing on or the much heralded Clinton team," Weaver noted. "That should serve him well in the general election and serve the country well if he is elected. The other was discipline. All campaigns ultimately reflect the character traits of the candidate and the Obama campaign has been the most disciplined in either party."

"He has remained remarkably consistent in style, tone, and message for 18 months -- despite the pressures of pundits second-guessing him and opponents picking at him," Democratic strategist Donnie Fowler noted in an e-mail message. "Clinton, in contrast, was constantly tinkering with the brand and her strategy."

Democratic pollster Mark Mellman pointed to another strength of Obama's, as shown in the primaries, which is a talent for inspiring people to act. "Without followers there are no leaders and inspiration is the most important tool leaders have with which to create followers," he wrote. He added, "Obama's ability to lead and inspire was central to his victory, against formidable odds, demonstrating that strength like few others ever have."

Obama's inspirational qualities represent a clear challenge to McCain. The Arizona senator's life story is one that will rouse many Americans, but his performance as a candidate day in, day out, may not. The contrast between Obama and McCain on the final night of the primary season was stark, and unnerving to many Republicans.

What are the major questions the two candidates must answer over the next five months?

For McCain the economy looms as a major test. "His number one challenge will be to effectively communicate in a clear and meaningful way how his policies will turn the economy around," Bonjean wrote.

Mellman agreed. "The big question is does he have competence or even the interest in economic issues that are animating most Americans," he wrote. Noting that McCain remains mostly identified with national security issues (and campaign finance as well), he added, "Does he have the ability to broaden his passions to incorporate the issues ordinary Americans care most about?"

Scott Reed, who ran Bob Dole's campaign in 1996, agreed that the economy is a big test for McCain, but put Iraq as an even greater question mark around his candidacy. "The biggest question will be if voters, especially independents and Reagan Democrats, are willing to accept his direction on Iraq."

Obama emerged from the primaries stronger -- and weaker. He is stronger in that he was toughened by the long fight with Clinton; weaker in the sense that his flaws became more obvious. "He did not wear over time (shown by his stumble across the finish line)," Fowler noted.

Obama won, barely, half the Democratic vote, and in the final months ran slightly behind Clinton. Latinos, women and working class whites -- all either core elements of the Democratic base or vital to winning the White House -- have shown resistance to his candidacy.

More broadly, can Obama put more details into his message of change? More than any other candidate, he tapped into the mood of the country with his promise to change Washington. Banning lobbyists' contributions to the Democratic National Committee is a symbolic step but not one that will fundamentally alter the way Washington does business.

Obama could face more scrutiny about what he intends to do to deliver on that promise. He will need a substantive agenda to go along with his lofty rhetoric and a clearer sense of his priorities as president.

After almost 18 months of non-stop campaigning, Obama and McCain may seem familiar figures in America's living rooms. But there is much more for each to reveal over the next five months.

If John McCain is elected, I'm sure before he dies in office, he'll sell the U.S. to Israel for one dollar. Joseph Lieberman will then have his life long dream fulfilled by being named the President of the United States of Israel. His first action as President will be to nuke all of the original Israel's enemies in the Middle-East.

Can't you read English? I said "You therefore voted for Bush in the PREVIOUS election" (i.e. 2000).

Will you answer my question now? It was:

Would you say that GWB is "one of those rare Americans who answered that call and has continued to answer the call"? If not why did you vote for him?

Posted by: A_Brit | June 10, 2008 4:54 AM

I feel McCains pain. Running for President twice and getting screwed twice will be hard to accept.

TOP 10 LIES by BARRY HUSSEIN

Posted by: Nadeem Zakaria | June 9, 2008 5:01 PM

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hey Nadeem trie looking a little further for the truth, it just might set you free.

There is going to be a tsnuami hitting the U.S.A. in November and I suggest you invest in a life vest and buy that cave in Idaho. Better hurry though they are becoming a hot commodity on the right. Don't worry the rest of us will be just fine under President Obama.

Below are all the truths behind the lies. A lesson to be learned, if it smells to good to be true...it's garbage.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/50lies.asp

Selma Got Me Born - LIAR, your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 - Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965.

This criticism is based on an overly-literal interpretation of Barack Obama's 2007 speech in Selma, Alabama, which we covered in a separate article.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/saywhat.asp
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Father Was A Goat Herder - LIAR, he was a privileged, well educated youth, who went on to work with the Kenyan Government.

These attributes are not mutually exclusive: Barack Obama's (biological) father was all of these things at different times in his life, as Obama described in his book, Dreams from My Father:
[My father] was as African, I would learn, a Kenyan of the Luo tribe, born on the shores of Lake Victoria in a place called Alego. The village was poor, but his father -- my other grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama -- had been a prominent farmer, an elder of the tribe, a medicine man with healing powers. My father grew up herding his father's goats and attending the local school, set up by the British colonial administration, where he had shown great promise. He eventually won a scholarship to study in Nairobi; and then, on the eve of Kenyan independence, he had been selected by Kenyan leaders and American sponsors to attend a university in the United States.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Father Was A Proud Freedom Fighter - LIAR, he was part of one of the most corrupt and violent governments Kenya has ever had.

We are unaware of Barack Obama's ever having claimed his father was a "proud freedom fighter." Obama has written (and spoken) at length about his father's returning to Africa from America to work for the Kenyan government, with that country's political turmoil eventually leaving him a "bitter drunk" and "a defeated, lonely bureaucrat."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Family Has Strong Ties To African Freedom - LIAR, your cousin Raila Odinga has created mass violence in attempting to overturn a legitimate election in 2007, in Kenya. It is the first widespread violence in decades.

As we discussed in a separate article, Kenyan politician Raila Odinga has recently claimed to be Barack Obama's cousin, but there is no substantive evidence documenting his claim, and the two men share no meaningful familial connection.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Grandmother Has Always Been A Christian - LIAR, she does her daily Salat prayers at 5am according to her own interviews. According to the New York Times: "I am a strong believer of the Islamic faith," Ms. Obama, 85, said in a recent interview in Kenya.' Not to mention, Christianity wouldn't allow her to have been one of 14 wives to 1 man.

The author seems to be unaware that Barack Obama, like most people, has two sets of grandparents. Obama was speaking of his maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, not his paternal grandmother.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Name is African Swahili - LIAR, your name is Arabic and 'Baraka' (from which Barack came) means 'blessed' in that language. Hussein is also Arabic and so is Obama.

The author seems to be unaware that many Swahili words and names are of Arabic origin (just as many English words originated with other languages). "Barack" is a Swahili name that entered the language via historical trade and cultural ties with Arabia.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Never Practiced Islam - LIAR, you practiced it daily at school, where you were registered as a Muslim and kept that faith for 31 years, until your wife made you change, so you could run for office.

The topic is already covered in our separate article about the (false) claims that Barack Obama is a Muslim.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My School In Indonesia Was Christian - LIAR, you were registered as Muslim there and got in trouble in Koranic Studies for making faces (check your own book).

The author seems to be unaware that Barack Obama attended more than one school in Indonesia, one of which was a public school that included Islamic religious instruction among its curriculum, and one of which was a private Catholic school.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Was Fluent In Indonesian - LIAR, not one teacher says you could speak the language.

We are unaware of Barack Obama's ever having claimed he was "fluent" in any Indonesian language (beyond the level of competence that could reasonably be expected of the non-native child speaker he was at the time he lived in that country). He did acquire (and apparently still has) a passable command of Bahasa, as Time magazine noted in a 2007 article:
When prominent Indonesians visit the U.S., the first person they want to meet is Obama, says Parnohadiningrat Sudjadnan, the Indonesian ambassador to the U.S. "Back home people think of him as one of us, or at least one who understands us," he says, adding that they are delighted to find that Obama speaks passable Bahasa, the language spoken in Indonesia and Malaysia.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because I Lived In Indonesia, I Have More Foreign Experience - LIAR, you were there from the ages of 6 to 10, and couldn't even speak the language.

Barack Obama did live in Indonesia for four years as a child, and he could in fact speak the local language passably well. Whether his time in that country provided him more "foreign experience" is argumentative, but Obama himself is far from the only person to suggest that it might:
Some would argue that his childhood experiences, as well as his mixed heritage (his father was Kenyan, his mother from Kansas), gives him a better inner compass on foreign policy than most Americans. They cite the pioneering work of Ruth Hill Useem, the late sociologist of Michigan State University, who spent her career studying what she called Third Culture Kids -- the millions of U.S. children (an estimated 20 million since the advent of mass air travel) who have been carted abroad by their missionary, diplomatic, corporate or military parents. These frequent-flier kids don't spend enough time in their adopted countries to become fully bicultural, but they take pieces and add it to their home values and traditions -- creating millions of "Third Cultures." Studies have shows that kids who have spent time abroad are more likely to go to college, to relate to one another despite the influences of vastly differing cultures, and to latch on to one aspect of their culture -- in Obama's case African Americanism.
I Am Stronger On Foreign Affairs - LIAR, except for Africa (surprise) and the Middle East (bigger surprise), you have never been anywhere else on the planet and thus have NO experience with our closest allies.

Barack Obama has lived in, traveled to, or otherwise spent time in countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Whether his experiences make him "stronger on foreign affairs" is argumentative, but again, Obama himself is far from the only person to suggest that it might:
"Living abroad does give you a wider view of the world," says Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Adviser under Jimmy Carter, and a Polish-American who spent four years as a child living in Germany with his diplomat father. Obama is "a person with genuine sensitivity of world affairs," says Brzenzinski, who is supporting Obama. "It's not the conventional mouthing of culture sensitivities." Brzezinski points to Obama's greater willingness to meet leaders of hostile nations and his early resistance to the war in Iraq as examples of his superior intuition on foreign policy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Life Magazine Article Changed My Outlook On Life - LIAR, Life has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn't, and never did, exist.

In Dreams from My Father, Barack Obama writes of a childhood experience occurring on a day when his mother dropped him off at a library on her way to work, and he began thumbing through issues of LIFE magazine:
Eventually I came across a photograph of an older man in dark glasses and a raincoat walking down an empty road. I couldn't guess what this picture was about; there seemed nothing unusual about the subject. On the next page was another photograph, this one a close-up of the same man's hands. They had a strange, unnatural pallor, as if blood had been drawn from the flesh. Turning back to the first picture, I now saw that the man's crinkly hair, his heavy lips and broad fleshy nose, all had this same uneven, ghostly hue.

He must be terrible sick, I thought. A radiation victim, maybem or an albino -- I had seen one of those on the street a few days before, and my mother had explained about such things. Except when I read the words that went with the picture, that wasn't it at all. The man had received a chemical treatment, the article explained, to lighten his complexion. He had paid for it with his own money. He expressed some regret about trying to pass himself off as a white man, was sorry about how badly things had turned out. But the results were irreversible. There were thousands of people like him, black men and women back in America who'd undergone the same treatment in response to advertisements that promised happiness as a white person.

I felt my face and neck get hot. My stomach knotted; the type began to blur on the page. Did my mother know about this? What about her boss -- why was he so calm, reading through his reports a few feet down the hall? I had a desperate urge to jump out of my seat, to show them what I had learned, to demand some explanation or assurance. But something held me back. As in a dream, I had no voice for my newfound fear. By the time my mother came to take me home, my face wore a smile and the magazines were back in their proper place. The room, the air, was quiet as before.
That no matching article may yet have been found in the pages of LIFE magazine does not mean that Obama saw no such article; it may simply mean that, writing decades after the fact, he misremembered the title of the magazine he was viewing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Won't Run On A National Ticket In '08 - LIAR, here you are, despite saying, live on TV, that you would not have enough experience by then, and you are all about having experience first.

Senator Obama never stated categorically that he would not run on a national ticket in 2008. He at one time said that he had "no plans" to run for national office in 2008, the standard response virtually all politicians give to press inquiries when they have not yet formulated (or do not wish to reveal) their plans for upcoming elections.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Was A Professor Of Law - LIAR, you were a senior lecturer ON LEAVE.

Barack Obama was indeed a professor at the University of Chicago's Law School, a fact verified by that institution itself:
The Law School has received many media requests about Barack Obama, especially about his status as "Senior Lecturer."

From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The title of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the title of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School's Senior Lecturers has high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Was A Constitutional Lawyer - LIAR, you were a senior lecturer ON LEAVE.

Between 1993 and 2002, Barack Obama worked as a civil rights lawyer with the Chicago law firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Didn't Run Ads In Florida - LIAR, you allowed national ads to run 8-12 times per day for two weeks - and you still lost.

In August 2007, major Democratic candidates signed a pledge to not campaign in Florida because that state had moved its primary election up to 29 January 2008, one week earlier than the Democratic national rules allowed. In January 2008, the Obama campaign launched national television advertisements on CNN and MSNBC that were also shown in Florida. Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton maintainted that they had asked CNN and MSNBC to pull Florida from the ad buy, but those networks said they could not.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Won Michigan - LIAR, no you didn't.

Senator Obama never claimed to have "won" Michigan, save for an interview in which he misspoke and mentioned the wrong state name. In accordance with the agreement mentioned in the previous entry, Barack Obama's name didn't even appear on the Michigan ballot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I won Nevada - LIAR, no you did not.

Senator Obama didn't claim to have "won" Nevada (a state that holds caucuses rather than direct-election primaries); he noted, correctly, that although Senator Hillary Clinton tallied more overall votes at the Nevada caucuses, he actually picked up more national delegates from that state:
Mitt Romney took Nevada's Republican caucuses, while Democrats debated whether their party had rendered a split decision. New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton won the vote count among those at the caucuses, but Illinois Sen. Barack Obama claimed a slight advantage in national convention delegates on the strength of his showing in rural areas.

Obama said in a statement released by his campaign that he came from 25 points behind and nearly beat Clinton today because he did well across all of Nevada -- "including rural areas where Democrats have traditionally struggled."

Obama's campaign said his performance in rural areas of the state helped him win a total of 13 national convention delegates, versus 12 for Clinton.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Don't Take PAC Money - LIAR, you take loads of it.

Senator Obama didn't say that has never accepted money from political action committees. (He used PAC money in his previous U.S. Senate and Illinois state Senate races.) He pledged that he would not accept PAC money for his 2008 presidential bid, a pledge that he has upheld.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't Have Lobbysists - LIAR, you have over 47 lobbyists, and counting.

Senator Obama did not claim that he doesn't "have lobbysists" [sic]. He stated that he does not employ federally registered lobbyists, and that if he were elected President his administration would not include any such lobbyists.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Campaign Had Nothing To Do With The 1984 Ad - LIAR, your own campaign worker made the ad on his Apple in one afternoon.

A widely-circulated spoof of Apple Computer's famous 1984 television advertisement for their (then-new) Macintosh computer was not created by an Obama campaign worker. It was, as explained in a statement issued by the managing director of Blue State Digital (a firm contracted to provide technology services to the Obama Campaign), created without authorization by an employee of that company:
Statement from Thomas Gensemer, Managing Director, Blue State Digital

On Wednesday afternoon, March the 21st, an employee at our firm, Phillip de Vellis, received a call from Arianna Huffington of "The Huffington Post" regarding the "1984" video currently circulating online. Initially, de Vellis refused to respond to her requests. He has since acknowledged to Blue State Digital that he was the creator of the video.

Pursuant to company policy regarding outside political work or commentary on behalf of our clients or otherwise, Mr. de Vellis has been terminated from Blue State Digital effective immediately.

Blue State Digital is under contract with the Obama Campaign for technology pursuits including software development and hosting. Additionally, one of our founding partners is on leave from the company to work directly for the campaign at headquarters.

However, Blue State Digital is not currently engaged in any relationship with the Obama Campaign for creative or non-technical services.

Mr. de Vellis created this video on his own time. It was done without the knowledge of management, and was in no way tied to his work at the firm or our formal engagement [on technology pursuits] with the Obama campaign.

I have spoken with David Plouffe, Sen. Obama's campaign manager, to inform him of this action and am appreciative of his understanding and ongoing support of our work.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Have Always Been Against Iraq - LIAR, you weren't in office to vote against it AND you have voted to fund it every single time, unlike Kucinich, who seems to be out gutting you Obama. You also seem to be stepping back from your departure date - AGAIN.

Senator Obama expressed opposition to the war in Iraq well before he gained a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2004. (The vote that authorized U.S. military action in Iraq was held in 2002.) He has since voted in the Senate to authorize funding for that war, for reasons he defended in a February 2008 Democratic debate:
The two Democrats exchanged pointed words over each other's records on the war in Iraq, which contrast sharply even as economic and domestic concerns become dominant in the race. Clinton voted in 2002 to authorize the invasion, which Obama opposed from the start. After Obama again touted a high-profile antiwar speech he gave in Chicago before the war, Clinton pointed out that he, like her, had subsequently voted for war funding, and that their records on Iraq were similar since he came to the Senate in 2005.

"When it wasn't just a speech, but it was actually action, where is the difference?" she said. "Where is the comparison that would in some way give a real credibility to the speech that he gave against the war?"

Obama shot back: "Once we had driven the bus into the ditch, there were only so many ways we could get out."

McCain's back room homosexual exploits with Graham and Charlie finally will be exposed by Graham enemies in South Carolina as part of the ongoing campaign to unseat him from congress.

McCain is a fraud, a mean overly sex old fart who cannot be trusted and will sell the soul of the country for the benefit of his cronies.

Do any of you know the correct term of the "breathalyzer" device Obama was trying to describe? I can give you a hint: It starts with an N.

All of you waiting for the "bombshell" video of Michelle Obama to drop, you will be waiting a very, very long time. Unlike you, the MSM in the US and abroad actually do (for the most part) their homework before speaking, so that they sound somewhat intelligently at times. Yes, there is a put-down in there. Yes, I am saying you sound stoooopid.

For all of you who are waiting for some negative god to prove what you want to believe...i.e. Obama is the scum of the earth.....if there was something to find regarding Ayers, Rezko, Father priest, middle east connections....The CLINTONS would have found it and exploited it. And if not the Clintons, the MSM would have bacause it sells papers and it gets major name recognition. Its politics after all!

Comparing McCain's military service and Obama lack of is like comparing an apple to an orange. McCain is nearly 80 years old. There has been only two "wars" since Obama was born and nothing as bad as Vietnam....which we still see the affects of. If you are going to dislike Obama, at least have a logical reason. Otherwise, call the spade for a spade because if you take away his color and his name, you just have another white man and this election would be ignored like the last few, which is why we had Bush for 8 years. Nobody cared.

If you are holding on to negative feelings about a Trinity Church, you have issues, serious issues. Because you know almost nothing about what is going on there and further, you do not want to know. Just like the full context of what was said was ignored, and just like any honest discussion about race has been ignored. Just like most on this post have not read and UNDERSTOOD the letter Obama wrote to Trinity resigning. Look in the mirror 'cause it ain't pretty!

Selma had problems before 1961. Assuming that Selma did not until the first march in 1963 is ignorant. Questioning why a persons parents got together but not questioning why gas has doubled since 2004, the beginning of Bush's last term in office is plain dumb.

Regarding Trinity church, would you continue to support something that is hurting you? Silly people. And you question Obama's judgment?

What exactly are the real qualifications for President? How did Bush fulfill these qualifications, not once, but twice?

Never have I heard of people disliking or hating people because their opinion is different. Never have I heard of people hating someone because you don't like the church they go to. Never have I heard of people hating someone because you don't some of their friends. Never have I heard of people hating someone because someone else lost a campaign race.

I thought the only time it possibly could be appropriate to hate someone is if they did something personally to you! We don't know McCain, Clinton or Obama.

What could be termed racist? Smearing someone as a terrorist because of their name. Smearing someone as a liar because why he said his parents got together. Smearing someone as a terrorist because they performed a "wonder twins" fist bump. Going as far as to create Youtube videos in an attempt to spread fear about a person. Deliberately inciting fear by using in all caps a person's name to make reference to terror. Deliberately stating "facts" about a person because you made it up, or if you do not have evidence or after it was proven to be incorrect. (See Grace yelling in all CAPS below.)

Doing these things may not necessarily make some racist, but it definitely makes them bullies, liars, mean, nasty, ugly, fearful, puny, cowardly, ignorant and repulsive.

Politicians have an excuse for doing this....it is called POLITICS. What are your reasons?

And there are some Americans who believe Obama is Muslim. Just read this blog to know that.

And all, including descendants of Ham, are equal in the eyes of God who know Him. And mentioning something as off the wall as that comment is racist inciting.

And for the person who wanted to know the middle names of Barack's daughters.....you know as well as I do that a simple google search gave you the answer. And you know that the middle names are all american and not 'weird or foriegn.'

And Publius, you are not performing a public service with your rhetoric.

Why do some politicians succeed in defeating stronger rivals, while others often fail?
This is a question that all politicians, including Barrack eventually face. Whether you're a start-up taking on giants like Hillary or McCain the basic problem remains the same:
How do you compete with opponents who have size, strength, and history on their side?
Please permit me to share with you a little advice on how the Barrack team, wip Hillary - Bill baby mama. We used what I learned in business school called the Judo strategy.
It is as simple as turning your compotators' strength to your advantage. We did it to Hillary and will do to McBush.

Obama is a wily and arrogant and dishonest manipulater who lacks loyality towards old friends and co-workes. He is also a youth manipulator and an unnatural guy who cannot take a free debate. He must have a lot of time to prepare and he will absolutely not be ready at 3 AM. He is also afraid of his wife Michelle and his mother. He has shady fiends who he has swept under his dirty carpet. He is a naive and empty load-mouth spoild by his mother. He has not anythink of lasting value during his 47 years. He has been bribed by Tony Rezko and .....

Hopefully these true Characters will be fully unmasked before August and Obama replaced by Hillary Clinton.

Two members of Barack Obama's vice presidential-vetting team met IN SECRET Monday with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Why IN SECRET? Because OBAMA is a cowardly liar.

Matt,

So what makes McCain a hero - being POW? He was just one lazy cat who got caught and conspired with the enemy to be freed. He was never a good warrior as he claimed to be. All he did was just punk out on his colleagues because he wanted to come home and marry his rich new girl friend. Sorry for his poor wife who waited for him for five years.

The American people don't want a President that will punk out again - the Senate is enough for him.

Balz, are you out of your mind? Let's compare the "adversity" these guys have faced: years of torture in a POW camp vs four months in the Democratic primary. Yeah, they're equally tough.

This is the kind of incredible nonsense that leads everyone to conclude that the media is on the Obama payroll.

Disgraceful.

So the "European observer of American politics" thinks Obama is better than FDR or JFK? What a joke...

Posted by: Nadeem Zakaria | June 9, 2008 8:27 PM

Barack Obama has divided the Democratic Party. Obama, his associates, and the DNC leadership has repeatedly offended the white working class, women, and non-black races. Who would not be offended by Rev. Wright or Rev. Flegler? Reading the blogs, who would not be offended by hate speech towards women or non-black voters? If a white candidate associated with people who made racist and sexist speeches (that were loudly applauded by Obama's church) would that candidate be embraced?

Face it - we are all going broke and going broke fast. In 2009 I do not want a student driver with a learner's permit driving this nation. Particularly one that changes his mind and his position from day to day and surround himself with advisors who are inexperienced (at best) to downright scary (at worst). Which brainchild wrote the speech to the Israeli lobbyist that promised to give the capital of Palestine over to complete Jewish control? Please!

In 2009 I want a steady leader who can drive us out of a war and a recession quickly and decisively. A leader who has the experience to make hard decisions and take the heat for those decisions. A leader who is fiscally responsible and is committed to cutting government spending. I am less concerned about choice than about our national survival. We need a leader who can drive us to prosperity and not poverty - and I believe that John McCain is hands down the best leader to get us all there together!

'Obama's steadiness as he fought off early doubts about his message and strategy, then weathered a series of controversies, is just as remarkable, given his limited experience on the national stage. Staring down the Clinton machine certainly did toughen him, as he said in the closing days of the competition with Hillary Clinton.'

May I respectfully suggest that campaigning against the Clintons for a few months hardly compares to the character test posed by years of command experience in the US Navy, and five years as a personal guest of the Hanoi Hilton thugz.

Also, may I respectfully suggest that there are no captains promoted in the US Navy by virtue of affirmative action.

Today, I am proud to announce that our presidential campaign will be the first in a generation to deploy and maintain staff in every single state.

The network of volunteers and the infrastructure built up during the historic primary season -- on behalf of all the Democratic campaigns -- have given us an enormous and unprecedented opportunity in the general election.

We need to register new voters and bring people back into the political process. We need to reach out to Independents and Republicans who know that our country cannot afford another four years of George W. Bush's disastrous policies.

And we need to overcome the three-month head start that John McCain has had to raise money and build support.

As in every presidential election, some states will be more competitive than others, and we will scale our resources accordingly.

But unprecedented grassroots energy during the primary means that the list of competitive states will be longer than ever before -- and it will include states like Virginia and Montana that aren't traditionally within reach for a Democratic presidential candidate.

And in every single state, our staff will build volunteer capacity that will provide help where we need it and impact races up and down the ballot this November.

Every day counts -- voters head to the polls in less than five months. This is your opportunity to shape the election by helping to launch our unprecedented 50-state campaign now:

The monolithic presidency has proven disastrous. While we hesitate to admit it, the presidency is functionally impotent. Without a cooperative legislature and judiciary presidential ambitions are virtually DOA. Barack Obama is an inspiration, he's a cheerleader and a motivator. He doesn't bludgeon you with details because that's not his job. His job is to motivate and inspire all Americans to do the hard work necessary to regain America's footing on the world stage. And we all know what work needs to be done, whether we'll admit it or not.

Same way you negotiate with potential suicide victims, and tothers threatening to do harm to themselves and others. Communication dos not preclude military strike --it simply provides a first alternative -- what was it your "god" used to say "Trust, but Verify."

Only a foolish ideologue would eschew communication with an enemy if violence might thereby be avoided. Many is the time that conversation led to a mutual agreement and then to a standdown from the brink. I was in GITMO in 1961 --- I'm glad Kennedy had the forbearance to engage the Russians with words instead of the nuclear weapons both sides were ready to use.

Rasmussen New Jersey-- Monday, June 09, 2008

Barack Obama holds a solid lead over John McCain in New Jersey in the first Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the state since the Illinois senator clinched the Democratic Party's nomination last week.

Forty-eight percent (48%) of likely voters in the Garden State favor Obama, as opposed to 39% for Mr. McCain, six percent (6%) for a third-party candidate and six percent (6%) undecided.

The results show that Hillary Clinton voters already are moving to Obama's column since the previous Rasmussen Reports survey in late March. At that time the Democratic nomination was still being hotly contested, and McCain held a statistically insignificant lead over each of his two potential rivals.

If you recall there were many Hillary supporters who were saying Obama could not win states such as NJ in the general since he lost it in the primary. Dumb.

And we see where Bush's policy of not talking to Muslim leaders has gotten us. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is 10x the leader George Bush will ever be. And at least Ahmadinejad ignores a segment of the country (i.e. black people).

And whose to say appeasment doesn't work? Is your solution to blow up the whole world? People often associate appeasement with Munich and Neville Chamberlain. Well people like Hitler are 1 in a 1,000,000. If Chamberlain wasn't dealing with Hitler, Chamberlain would have achieved "peace in his time." Similarly, Obama will create peace in our time by talking with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other Muslim leaders.

Those who don't see this viewpoint are xenophoic or racist or both.

As a Muslim living in America, it gives me hope that someone with the name Barack Hussein Obama is the Democratic nominee. It says a lot about the progress America has made.
Hopefully, Barack remains true to his Islamic roots and puts an end to the mistreatment of Muslims living in America. Barack should end the despicable practice of profiling individuals merely because they look "Arab." Ironically, most of these individuals detained are often Sikh and don't even subscribe to Islam.
Barack should bring greater awareness of Islam and greater tolerance.

Indeed his willingness to speak with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a step in the right direction. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad challenged President Bush to a debate, but Bush recognized the weakness of his position and refused. The world will not be a safer place by not talking to "terrorists." Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is an intelligent man who has done great things for the Iranian people.

Hopefully, Barack Obama will foster good relations with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Iran, the future powerhouse of the Middle East.

All I ask is that voters have, being a good American as one of the factors in their decision for who should lead this country. Selfless service is something not is not sexy, glamorous, or something that will make you rich, but it is a something that makes for great leaders.

We are living in extremely difficult times. We need a leader who will put America first and is strongly committed to serving the American people.

Obama hasn't indulged in any race baiting. He has run an inclusive campaign.

Criticims of the comments you mention were indeed widespread - from people offended by them, not from the Obama campaign. I thought the latter showed an awful lot of restraint.

Personally, although it may not have been meant that way, I found the "hardworking white Americans" and "Robert Kennedy" comments extremely offensive. Really, really, really offensive.

I did not hear criticism or much comment from the Obama campaign so much as I heard outrage from people offended by them. The smart thing would have been to back off of them and apologize, even if nothing was intended.

They were offensive enough (whether meant that way or not is irrelevant) to upset a lot of people. I have lived in the South all of my life, and this sounded WAY too much like the race-baiting campaigns I've heard for an awful lot of years - anybody remember "Macaca"?

May not have been meant that way - but it pushed a lot of buttons. Those hit a ten on my "offensive-o-meter."

This "whitey" video is absurd and disgusting. The desperate Hilary lovers were duped by come "clever" Republicans who claimed they had this video showing Michelle ranting about white folks using the term "whitey". There have been claims that it was going to released several different times and nothing. I think the latest is that it is now being held by Bob Dole (no kidding) and will be released one week before the vote in Nov and it will "destroy" Obama and that's why the superdelegates need to come to their senses and bring Hillary back. It is sad that some people are so desperate to win they can be duped into believing anything.

Obama's race-baiting is a major reason this Dem family is voting for McCain!

Jesse Jackson ran for president twice and never engaged in race-baiting or falsely accused his opponents of racism.
BUT - Jackson ran on issues and solutions.
Obama made his Race a central part of his campaign.

Obama never once stood up for the Truth: It really did take Pres. Johnson to implement Dr. King's goals.
Robert Kennedy really was ASSASSINATED during the Dem primary in 1968.
Hillary cited polling data - the white working class wasn't voting for Obama - and she was declared a racist.

When people are accused of racism merely for citing polling data and historical facts - that's fascism. Obama style.

NObama!

Posted by: Obama was a Muslim | June 9, 2008 6:23 PM

Susan, you're just flat wrong.

First of all, he's 46, so outside of your supposedly damning age range.

Second of all, he's not Muslim. He never has been Muslim. And even if he had been, there are millions of peace loving Muslims out there. "There shall be no religious test for office" is written into our constitution by the founding fathers (smart guys) who knew that characterizations such as yours were dangerous to a healthy democracy.

The extremists want nothing more than for John McCain to be elected because his hard line stance makes it much easier for them to recruit people against us. Someone who is rational and open to dialog is much much harder to hate and that kind of world outlook will make us more, not less secure. Instead of trying to "kill the terrorists" we should remove the reasons for there even being terrorists. This is not to say we will not need strong defense, we absolutely do. But as long as we're on the defensive, we're losing whether we want to admit that to ourselves or not. McCain will keep us perpetually on the defensive in wars we cannot win, Obama will ensure that such wars are never again necessary.

There is no "whitey" video. Here are some facts:

1. Michelle Obama was not a speaker at the event where the mythical video was supposed to have been taken. Her supposed speech was made up.

2. The event did not take place where the mythical video was supposed to have been taken. The location was made up.

3. The people who supposedly were talking with Michelle Obama on the mythical video .. well they weren't at the event. Their presence was made up.

4. There was originally claimed to be a transcript of the video. It turned out to be a blog post, speculating at what might have been said. The transcript was made up, a blog post.

5. There was originally claimed to be an incriminating response from the Obama campaign about the mythical transcript of the mythical post, which turned out to be another blog post. Also made up, in other words.

When the National Review online (quite a conservative web site) describes this as follows "The preponderance of the evidence now suggests that there's nothing there." - and did so a week ago, with no new supporting evidence - let's face it.

It's made up. There is no evidence whatsoever that Michelle Obama every called anyone whitey. Period.

Your arguments have multiple failings. The Mexican American War has been over for more than two centuries. You guys lost - its over. I'm tired of Hispanics and their Reconquista talk. Your people come into this country illegally, and take jobs away from other hard working Americans. Additionally, you make no attempt to be American.
Its well known that Hispanics hate black people. Look at Alberto Gonzalez. Bush was foolish enough to put one of your own in power and look what he did.
What Rev. Wright said was right on. Obviously you're ignorant, but I should expect that from you especially coming from an outsider.
Chicano pride is a joke - this is America. All you care about is your own. Your time is never.

"I think the Rupublicans are going to release the whitey video in October."

Yeah, it will take them that long to get a third-party group of utterly shameless neo-Swiftboaters backed by Scaiffe, with no direct connection to McCain (plausible deniability), to paste it together and edit it it to look like maybe she's saying "Whitey." Then they have to stick Farakan in the background waving a pitchfork while Sharpton burns a flag. It's all very complicated, not as easy I'd you'd think.

Guess what, another liberal loser. I vowed to never vote for another liberal loser. Clinton's gone and I now have the liberal loser left. Obama's use of racism and sexism, and his lack of character sewed it up for me.

As a Mexican voter, I was extremely hurt when I heard Rev. Wright's speech saying "God Da*n America." I have worked hard to be in this country and to hear someone say that, brought tears to my eyes. This was Obama's mentor and he flip-flopped. At first he refused to disavow him, then later he did when he thought it was politically expedient for him to do so.
Mr. Obama is not the sort of person we want running this country. He continues to marginalize Latinos and he pushes black rights at the expense of all other minorities include those who work hard to be a part of this country. Obama is clever in making it seem like others are injecting race, when it is himself. He also thinks race relations is only about whites and blacks.
This is the politics of old. Latinos are the largest minority in America, and generally we work hard to be in this country and live the American Dream.

That's of course because the Democratic majority is too slim to override Republican filibusters and vetoes.

Which is why if America wants a change, it has to both vote for Obama AND vote out obstructionist Republican congressmen and senators.

Thanks for reminding me to point that out.

This is the problem with our military today. People get shot and they get a medal. People get captured and they get a medal. Shoot, in Vietnam, people used to shoot themselves in the foot so they could go home. I guess those people got a medal too.

Only in the military do people get medals for not doing their job right. Hey maybe I should injure myself at work or work for my rival company. Then maybe I'll get a medal today. WOW, reading some of these pathetic Republican views and ignorant rants is really embarrassing to say that some of them are Americans with no sense.

How can John McCain be a "WAR HERO" when thousands of American soldiers were POWS in various wars and they were not considered or touted as "HEROS", except by those of us that give each and every soldier that distinction of our own. John McCain destroyed three US jets during his trials as a pilot, destroyed a US carrier, USS Forrester killed and wounded hundreds of American soldiers on that ship from his BLUNDER, caused millions of dollars worth of damage to the ship, equipment, ammunition, and personnel, this was covered up by the Pentagon because John McCains father and grandfather were Admirals in the Navy and John couldn't make the grade and this would create an embarrassment to the military and to the McCain legacy. Although, John McCains service to our country is greatly appreciated in a time of war, John McCain spent 5 1/2 years as a POW then went straight into politics, where is John McCains EXPERIEANCE in foreign relations? How did John McCain make such a STUPID decision to give The Penguin and Muttly the votes to go to war in IRAQ? Why did McBush and the Republican IDIOTS really want war with Iraq instead of going after al Qaida in Pakistan and Afghanistan,? OIL, my friends!

What ever happened to going after those RESPONSIBLE for the 911 attacks on our country, instead somehow turned into a LIBERATION project for Iraq? Tell us about that Republicans and McBush! Why does Daddy Bush's, Zapata Oil/Pennzoil and Halliburton have dibs in Iraq, run the show on those wells and we are paying $4+ for gas?

Why are WE paying for the Iraq war instead of the Iraqi government, John McSame? Where is the investigation for $9 Billion US tax dollars that went to fund the military in Iraq and that money is still unaccounted for?

No, we don't need John McSame for president, his ignorant stance on the war in Iraq and Iran, the economy, and the structure of our country is not needed by this Elitist, who never had to work was silver spooned ALL his life, married a loving woman, she gets cancer he dumps her and then comes Cindy the home wrecker. Umm, what happened to LOYALTY, JOHN? What has John McCain done for the military active duty and vets since 1981 when he first came into the senate and NOW 2008? NOT ONE THING only speeches! John has voted against every bill that has favored our great servicemen/women as vets and active. votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=53270&type=category&category=66&go.x=12&go.y=11

It really all comes down to these points:

1. McCain is STUCK with the NEO-CON criminals in his party who will follow him like rats throughout the whitehouse, and in appointment to government agencies... Think: "Brownie".

...Obama rejects the NEO-CON philosophy of "ideology-trumps-policy" and isn't beholding to either.

2. McCain is funded/owned by lobbiests

...Obama rejects all lobbiest money

3. McCain will stay in Iraq without an effort to lewssen our footprint or leave.

...Obama will leave Iraq and fight AlQaida terrorism where it starts - Pakistan and Osama Bin Laden.

4. McCain will not do anything to win back our allies.

...Obama's primary win has already brought kudos to the american voter from our allies who despise Bushco's lies and hubris, and refuse to help us in Iraq as a result.

5. McCain is from the baby-boom generation who's timeand ideas have passed.

...Obama is the next generation. Race and gender don't matter. Only positive, powerful and strong, peaceful, scientific, and economic progress matter.

The differences are indeed stark.

vote Obama in '08!

Lots of thoughtful analysis in the comments section. Jesus Christ. These soulless right wing bloggers need a nap, and a better candidate. John McCain doesn't excite them because John McCain isn't very intelligent. He's been in Washington thirty years, and I'm supposed to swoon over that? Not going to happen. But to all of these fascists posting racist garbage on here, I'm willing to bet that most of you live in "lily" white towns with less than forty black families. It's funny. Republicans run and hide from blacks in the city and they resist any social programs that might, inadvertently, help a black or brown person. And you wonder why we have kids dying in Arabia? Because the supporters of this messianic crusade have no ideas, no philosophy, they take their marching orders and revert to McCarthyism whenever their leaders' policies fail them. But I just don't get all the black fear. Most of these racist toolbags don't even live near or around black people. They're just afraid to challenge what their parents and grandparents have force fed them all their lives. It's really too bad because you're just being used by your country club leadership to attack people --black, brown, white, gay, liberal-- who earn as much as you do. You're the reason this country looks like it does right now. It could all change if you'd realize you're racist sentiments are being exploited so that "lily" white Republicans can give tax breaks to the 10% of income earners, to which you do not, and will not ever belong. And that's what Republicans want: You to stay right where you are, and to yell n*gger when you're goaded. Or you know, you can grow up.

And I think many of you can tell why it's time for my city to leave the Union. You don't like us, and we don't even need you.

Chevy,

You need to get your facts straight, boy. Obama never threw his grandma under the bus. YouTube his speech and listen before reaching for any beer. It might change your perspective on issues that are black and white. In fact, Obama has class. He gave his Revving Rev the benefit of the doubt until went beserk at NPC. To quote Mr. Obama, he said that: I can no more disown his just like he didn't disown his grandma who had issues of blackphobia. What he meant was that there is a generational issue at play where older folks tend to have blackphobia while the young ones are embracing their counterparts. That is why they want change via Obama.

Barack Obama should challenge John McCain in states that have traditionally voted Republican.

For McCain, this means his people have their eyes fixed chiefly on Wisconsin, Michigan, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, which add up to 51 electoral votes. Obama's softest targets would appear to Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico and Virginia, which add up to 34 electoral votes.

Posted by: Zaza | June 9, 2008 4:49 PM

Okay. Compare Obama's participation in his own presidential campaign to McCain's years as a POW to illustrate they've both got strength. Sure. They sound like equally harrowing experiences.

Obviously, it was Obama's lack of intimidation that caused him to play the race card at every turn.

And he was certainly consistent when he uninvited Wright to speak at his campaign announcement, then said he couldn't disown him, then disowned him. Just about as consistent as he was on his position on Jerusalem - which is as consistent as he was on his claim to be against the Iraqi war, before he said he and Bush had the same outlook on it and before he cast all those votes that were the same as Clinton's and McCain's.

If a candidate doesn't have strength and character, but is beloved by the media, no worries, some eager writer will find a way to manufacture strength and character for him. Obama doesn't even have to play his own shell game. The media does it for him.

Posted by: Kase | June 9, 2008 4:41 PM

Publius,

Glad to hear that you are a student of American civics. Unfortunately, the United States is all about popular demagoguery. It has been since President Jackson and more so since the direct election of Senators. The 24-hour cable news cycle makes popular demagoguery even more important to get elected. I am looking for the candidate who will use popular demagoguery to get elected, but is intelligent enough to act in the best informed manner.

Your first post's emphasis of "look beyond his color and his name" implied that all I did was look at his color and his name. This argument typically implies that white voters for Obama vote out of a sense of liberal guilt than understanding of his policies.

With regard to capitol gains taxes, it is very likely that an earlier position of his was overtaken by new information. I find this reassuring. Plus, the United States is not in need of tax reductions. In fact, we need revenue increasers in order to pay off the war debt. Last year, the United States paid $23 billion in interest payments alone from war debt. To accomplish that, there will need to be systematic tax reform to simplify the tax code and make the United States more competitive. No candidate has promised that, but at least Mr. Obama will not recklessly cut taxes more.

When it really comes down to it, I don't care about the Rev. Wright stuff. Nobody runs for public office if they "hate" America. Mr. Obama acted correctly in his timing and decision making to separate himself from Rev. Wright. His personal loyalty to him allowed for one more chance at the National Press Club which Rev. Wright flubbed because he became an egomaniac searching for a national broadcast camera.

I am not going to comment on the Selma thing because I have not read the full statement or seen the context. Was he saying that his parents met at Selma or that his parents got together in the same spirit as the whites and blacks marching together in Selma.

Go figure!!

Obama had embraced and participated in his church for numerous years, and only now, after pressure is mounting on him does he choose to leave.

Obama did the same for Rev Wrong after his insane speeches surfaced on the net. Obama embraced him while throwing Grandma under the bus. Again only after pressure mounted did Obama throw Rev Wrong under the bus with Granny.

K30a, I'm still not sure where you are going with the girls' middle names. If the reply is correct that the older daughter's middle name is Ann, you now know why. Or at least I'm assuming so, based on the name. Senator Obama's late mother's maiden name was Stanley Ann Dunham and she went by Ann.

He clearly comes from a family where they pass on names (unlike my family where we each get a new one). For example, his name is the same as his dad's and that is obviously how it was chosen. Somewhat more unusually, his mother's first name Stanley was the same as his grandfather's (her father's). I can see why she decided to go with Ann.

Is there really an American voter out there who would actually select the next leader of the free world based on his kids' middle names? Picture me shaking my head in disbelief.

A LETTER FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION

Republican McCain-Bush represents further failures across the pond. Are Americans asleep while the Republicans continue their nightmarish destructions? Europe and the World must speak now regarding the Republican McCain-Bush problem.

MISSION ACCOMPLISH\ED? REPUBLICANS MISINFORMED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THAT IRAQ WOULD WELCOME AMERICANS AS LIBERATORS.

Once again Republican greed is hurting their country. Will Americans wake up to reinstate Democracy and take back their country from Republican Wall Street Super-capitalists, sellouts and Treasury raiders?

This person needs a job. This individual seeks an executive position. He will be available in January 2009, and is willing to relocate.

RESUME

GEORGE W. BUSH
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20520

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Law Enforcement:
I was arrested in Kennebunkport , Maine , in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver's license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been "lost" and is not available.

Military:
I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.

College:
I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. I was a cheerleader.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE:
I ran for U.S. Congress and lost.
I began my career in the oil business in Midland Texas , in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn't find any oil in Texas . The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock.
I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money.
With the help of my father and our friends in the oil industry (including Enron CEO Ken Lay), I was elected governor of Texas .

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS :
I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union . During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America .
I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money.
I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history.
With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida , and my father's appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President of the United States , after losing by over 500,000 votes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT:
I am the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record.
I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week.
I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury.
I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history.
I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period.
I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.
I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market. In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues.
I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My "poorest millionaire," Condoleezza Rice, has a Chevron oil tanker named after her.
I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President.
I am the all-time U.S. and world record -holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations.
My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. history, Enron.
My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.
I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or prosecution. More time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip-offs in history. I presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed.
I presided over the highest gasoline prices in U.S. history.
I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts.
I appointed more convicted criminals to my administration than any President in U.S. history.
I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States Government.
I've broken more international treaties than any President in U.S. history.
I am the first President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission.
I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law.
I refused to allow inspector's access to U.S. "prisoners of war" detainees and thereby have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention.
I am the first President in history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. election).
I set the record for fewest numbers of press conferences of any President since the advent of television.
I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one-year period. After taking off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure in U.S. history.
I garnered the most sympathy ever for the U .S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the U.S. the most hated country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.
I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the record for protests against any person in the history of mankind.
I am the first President in U.S. history to order an unprovoked, pre-emptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. Citizens and the world community.
I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families in wartime.
In my State of the Union Address, I lied about our reasons for attacking Iraq and then blamed the lies on our British friends.
I am the first President in history to have a majority of Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security.
I am supporting development of a nuclear "Tactical Bunker Buster," a WMD.
I have so far failed to fulfill my pledge to bring Osama Bin Laden to justice.
RECORDS AND REFERENCES:
All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my father's library, sealed and unavailable for public view.
All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view.
All records or minutes from meetings that I, or my Vice-President, attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public review. I specified that my sealed documents will not be available for 50 years.

Hello Chevy,

Obama did not put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem.

And yes now he has been instructed on proper protocol and now wears his flag pin and places his hand over his heart.

It is funny how Obama is becoming a puppet. If he really felt he didn't need to show his "patriotism" by wearing a flag pin or placing your hand over your heart, why does he do it now. Seriously Obama, if you believe this, stick with it.

Obama grow some balls, if you win, you're gonna have bigger issues coming your way.

Her husband made racist comments, and her supporters are tired and old. No wonder, they subscribed to the politics of old that were are trying to move away from.

We cannot bring about change by putting this lame pigeon on the ticket.

I support Obama because he represents change. I am sick of people who are influenced by political pundits. This is a movement people. There is more to life than winning elections (that is the politics of old).

Obama can change the face of politics and America. We don't need old geezers like McCain or racist white women and men like Bill and Hillary Clinton running the show. Its time that we embrace the fact that America is no longer the racist white country we used to be.

You need to worry about the country you live in about your safety than some terroist group coming to get you. Where have you gotten this nonsense of bring back the old welfare system?
I'm so sick and tired of people harping on the poor in this country. Until, you get to know some of the hard working individuals in this country cooking your burgers and cleaning your place of business
then you don;t have a right to comment about the welfare system. The system is there to help people to get a leg up on maybe some bad decisions they've made in there lives. Yes, I know some abuse the system both black and white but that is a small amount who have used the system only once or twice in their life time when they needed it. Your fear is just that yours and you don't need to spread it, be fearful by yourself. We made it through the Bush years and we will survive yet another eight with Obama as President. Your way of live will not be affected unless you decide to have it be affected in some small minded fashion.

1. 1968 Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed by: A Muslim male extremist between the ages of 17 and 40.

2. In 1972 at the Munich Olympics, athletes were kidnapped and massacred by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

3. In 1979, the US embassy in Iran was taken over by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.
4. During the 1980's a number of Americans were kidnapped in Lebanon by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

5. In 1983, the US Marine barracks in Beirut was blown up by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.
6. In 1985 the cruise ship Achille Lauro was hijacked and a 70 year old American passenger was murdered and thrown overboard in his wheelchair by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

7. In 1985 TWA flight 847 was hijacked at Athens, and a US Navy diver trying to rescue passengers was murdered by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

8. In 1988 , Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

9. In 1993 the Worl d Trade Center was bombed the first time by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.
10. In 1998, the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

11. On 9/11/01, four airliners were hijacked; two were used as missiles to take out the World Trade Centers and of the remaining two, one crashed into the US Pentagon and the other was diverted and crashed by the passengers. Thousands of people were killed by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the of 17 and 40.

12. In 2002 the United States fought a war in Afghanistan against: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

13.. In 2002 reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered by: Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.

Now, do you really see a pattern here to justify profiling Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40? Why would anyone be suspicious of Muslim males between the ages of 17 and 40?
So, to ensure that we Americans never offend anyone, particularly Muslim fanatics between the ages of 17 and 40 intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile . .

Except that: they must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, secret agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winner, former Governor Joe Foss, and pretty ladies but leave Muslim Males between the ages 17 and 40 alone lest they be guilty of profiling and offending anyone bent on killing us.

NOW HEAR THIS:
some of the People of the United States want to elect, to the most Powerful office on the face of the Earth, namely:
The Presidency of the United States of America,
a Muslim Male Extremist between the age of 17 and 40.

A_Brit,

If you must know, I supported Senator Kerry in the last election. Unfortunately, he was publicly assasinated by the Swift Boat Ads. I am not a supporter of either Rudy Guiliani, Hillary Clinton, or former President Bill Clinton, but they were also similarly the victims of a sensational media.

Posted by: RangerDan | June 9, 2008 3:48 PM

ADS,

Interesting straw man arguments.

I was making a general comment. Never once did I saw you were one of those Obama supporters influenced by what you call "liberal guilt."

If you look at Obama's experience and policy positions and find what your looking for, I congratulate you. All I'm asking is that people make informed decisions at the polls and not be caught up in the popular demagoguery that our Framers and yes the "real" Publius warned against.

Obama has been vague on his economic plans. This is consistent with his campaign strategy. It is much easier to sell a message of nice-words such as hope and change to disillusioned people. Its also easier to flip-flop on your policy when you are vague (e.g. his flip-flop on the capital gains tax). Obama is one of the most liberal senators (when he is actually doing his job and showing up for the votes). From his vague economic plans, he'll probably do the typical increase services paid for by increased taxes that he will disguise as a tax on only the rich when it will in reality - hurt all Americans.

In regards to the comments about Reverend Wright and the Trinity Church. When the Reverend Wright footage first came out, we saw: the whole "God D*** America", a white government gave black people AIDS, the United States brought 9/11 upon itself, et cetera. At this time, Obama refused to disavow Reverend Wright or the church. Months later, Reverend Wright goes in front of the National Press Club and the NAACP. He makes essentially the same comments. The only new comment he makes is something to the effect of, "Barack is a politician, he will say whatever it takes to get elected." Now, Barack has a problem, and now Obama disavows the Rev. Wright. Months later, his advisors recommend that Obama also disconnect from the church, which he does.

This is my problem with the above actions. I'm not arguing Rev. Wright's points are wrong (that's not at issue). I'm not arguing whether the church was good or bad (again that is not the issue). My issue is this. If Obama really believed Rev. Wright and the church was really that bad, he would've disconnected from both entities immediately. He had good things to say about both the Reverend and the Church. If he really does really believe they are positive influences especially the church, Obama should have stood by them. But he has not, this shows an extreme lack of loyalty, personal courage, and intestinal fortitude.

Additionally, you did not respond to Obama's bastardization of the civil rights movement and fabricating stories of Marking the anniversary of the March 1965 "Bloody Sunday" in Selma, Ala., Obama, speaking at a church, said his parents got together "because of what happened in Selma." Obama was born in 1961.

If all you got is mocking comments about my admiration for writers of the one of greatest political writings, the Federalist Papers, then you really got NOTHING.

Any man who uses racism and sexism to get elected has no character.

Any man who promises to be above the fray then helps start the fray has no character.

Any man who calls all whites racist, even his grandmother who raised him, has no character.

Any man who calls small town white workers bitter, gun toting, religious fanatic, and racist has no character.

So let's see . . . in 1999/2000 we had Al Gore (VP for 8 years, senator and congressman prior, served in armed services for Vietnam, though could have gotten out, rich son (Tennesee)) -- versus W. (Texas gov. for 2 years, failed oilman and bailed-out owner of the infamous Texas Rangers, seemed to have other priorities (like VP Cheney) during Vietnam, rich son (Connecticut)).
Who had more experience then? W took the throttle for 8 years and did this much damage, anyone is better, and I would definitely go with Barack Obama at this point rather than flip-flopper McCain . . .

I echo Silk's criticism of Gobama. First of all, McCain is an opponent of torture and promises to close Guantanamo. Two, unlike Obama, McCain has a distinguished congressional record of implementing bipartisan change. Three, to suggest that McCain lived a life of privilege contradicts his life story. Instead of spending his early adult years in Harvard Yard, McCain lived in the Hanoi Hilton. Time to for Barack to begin filling in the dots and qualifying the change he promises.

This is the change I cannot believe.

When I was a boy, I was taught that George Washington was the father of our country and Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.

Today, when I ask my son about George Washington, he says George Washington owned slaves. He does not know who wrote the Declaration of Independence, but he does know that Thomas Jefferson had a black mistress.

I am not for censorship, but (due to the emphasis on revisionist history) I have the feeling that the wrong things are being emphasized in today's schools. I understand why people are afraid of nationalism, but you do want to instill at least a bit of some national pride in today's youth. Other people are willing to die for their country, I'm not quite sure how many people today would answer President Kennedy's call of, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Senator John McCain is one of those rare Americans who answered that call and has continued to answer the call. Today, people have forgotten the importance of being a great American - hopefully those people are in the minority.

Lynn E - weren't you on the NY times board posting dozens of messages on your no vote for Obama. You seem to have a lot of stories to support your "reasoned" decision to vote for McCain. You should stop at Salon.com next and tell them the "african family" story.

Posted by: LAC | June 9, 2008 2:55 PM

Publius (I still find your chosen alias to be ridiculous),

Why are you so quick to judge me as solely being a supporter of Mr. Obama because of liberal guilt? While it is true that some American's will not vote for Mr. Obama because of race (20% of the population over the age of 35 and only 6% of the population under 35 will not vote for Mr. Obama because of his race), nobody is crying out that all people opposed to an Obama presidency are racist.

I am a skeptical liberal. New federal programs are not the cure all, but they should not be discounted. I have judged Mr. Obama by his policies. He has a better understanding of economic issues, health care, and education policy than John McCain. On foreign policy, what is being called naive by conservative commentators is actually very realist opposed to the neo-conservativism that John McCain embraced after 2001.

Your comments about Mr. Obama's former church leave out numerous details. The church performed an incredible amount of community service. Any social conservative who wants religious institutions to play a more significant role in social services should take note of that. Further, according to other church goers, Rev. Wrights public comments at the National Press Club were far beyond any normal sermon he offered at the church. Mr. Obama made the correct decision to leave the church after the Rev. strayed.

[about what Ranger Danger says with respect o McCain turning down an opportunity to be set free from a prison camp in Vietnam] That neither makes any strategic sense for the Vietnamese, nor does it make McCain look especially intelligent. However, while it feigns an attempt to lend him some "patriotic" credentials----it would be far more patriotic to get free and fight another day than to allow one's self be subjected to torture like that. But HEY if that's your idea of a good president---knock yourself out at the ballot booth.

But what I find particularly interesting is how truly hostile many McCain supporters are right now---and they sound a whole lot like the Bushies did when this war biz got all fired up. There were no rational arguments being heard---the rationale was all bare knuckles waved in the faces of different opinions...

Go Obama Go!

DEMOCRATS HATE OBAMA BECAUSE WE DO NOT KNOW HIM OR TRUST HIM.
THE LIBERAL MEDIA LOVES HIM BECAUSE HE DEFEATED THE CLINTONS AND BECAUSE THEY THINK HE CAN SPEAK AND LOOKS GOOD. HE STUDDERS TOO MUCH.

NOW THAT THE PERSONALITY CONTEST IS OVER. WE NEED TO ASK TOUGH QUESTIONS.

1. HOW DOES OBAMA PLAN TO GET OUT OF IRAQ?
2. WHY DOES HE WANT TO SELL AMERICA'S INFRASTRUCTURE LIKE TRANSPORTATION TO THE MIDDLE EAST SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUNDS?

OBAMA WANTS TO SELL OUR RAIL SYSTEM CSX THAT TRANSPORTS AMMUNTION FROM ALLOUR MILITARY BASES TO TCF(THE CHILDREN'S FUND). THIS NON GOVERNMENTAL AGENCY WILL THEN BE IN CHARGE OF SHIPPING AMMUNITION THROUGH VARIOUS CITIES AND NEAR OIL REFINERIES. THIS CAN BE ANOTHER POTENTIAL 911.

3. HOW WILL HE PAY FOR RESTORING THE OLD WELFARE SYSTEM? CLINTON REFORMED IT NOW OBAMA PROMISES TO RESTORE IT.

4. HOW WILL OBAMA STIMULATE THE ECONOMY?
5. WHAT WILL OBAMA DO TO RESTORE THE CLINTON VOTERS WHO ARE NOW VOTING FOR MCCAIN?

OBAMA IS AN EMPTY SUIT. AS LONG AS JOURNALISTS TREAT HIM AS SUCH THEN AMERICANS WILL NEVER KNOW ABOUT HIM. VOTERS WILL PROJECT THEIR OWN IMAGE OF HIM AND HE WILL RUN A HORRIBLE WHITE HOUSE. HE IS GOING TO GIVE AMERICA AWAY TO THE SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUNDS OF THE MIDDLE EAST. SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUNDS ARE HEDGE FUNDS FOR OIL PUMPING NATIONS. WE PAY $4.99 FOR GAS IN CALIFORNIA THEN THE MIDDLE EAST TAKES THOSE PROFITS AND COMES TO AMERICA TO BARGAIN HUNT. THEY ARE PURCHASING OUR TANSPORTATION INSTITUTIONS, BANKING INSTITUTIONS, AND OUR POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS LIKE THE WHITE HOUSE AND OBAMA.

I have a family from an African country I help out and see weekly. They have been in the United States for several years. Yesterday, the youngest girl, about 11, tried to con her brother out of soft drink by claiming he wouldn't want it because the seal was broken (she broke it). Teasing her, I took it and drank a sip out of it saying that I would take it since no one else wanted it. She screamed and tried to take it away from me, screaming "Racism!" She was joking, but that's what we're going to get during this election campaign for any democrat who won't vote for Obama and even in the general election. Some people learn it early and quickly.
What a headache. She did try to ask me if I was going to vote for Obama and I said I hadn't decided who to vote for. She mentioned that "everybody likes Obama, except for racist people." Oh, of course! There can't be any other reason, can they! It seems like the Democratic party split people into two and they think with a touch of their wand everybody is just going to come back. It just isn't going to happen until after the election or longer if something better doesn't come along in the form of a new party. Maybe it was just time to leave and go in a new direction.

Enter Obama, a man masquerading as a man of change when he represents the worse of the politics of old - lies, duplicity, machinations. He will say anything to get elected:

Marking the anniversary of the March 1965 "Bloody Sunday" in Selma, Ala., Obama, speaking at a church, said his parents got together "because of what happened in Selma." Obama was born in 1961.

When news first broke out about Rev. Wright, Obama refused to disavow his connections with Rev. Wright and the Trinity Church. Some time elapses, and when Rev. Wright goes in front of the National Press Club and the NAACP and makes essentially the same comments, the media stokes this story into a frenzy. Obama's response is he will now disavow the Reverend (emphasis, these were essentially the same comments). Some time elapses, and his advisors believe his connections with the church may be a liability - Obama finally disavows the church.

So what is it ADS? You say you want a candidate who is flexible. I will give you that. Obama is definitely flexible. He will say whatever it takes to get elected.

If Obama is so much about change, and if he firmly believes that the Trinity Church is such a great church (as he has said), he should stand by it, support it. But no, he's willing to leave his friends and mentors in the dust.

If this is how Obama treats his "friends" and the people who helped him get to where he is now, imagine what kind of leader he will be.

Obama will speak at the anniversary of Dr. King. Dr. King said, do not judge a man by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character. Obama's character is definitely wanting for morality, loyalty, and judgment.

I'm waiting for the Obama supporters to make excuses for Obama. Go ahead and give me the typical, Americans are racist, they won't vote for a black candidate or there's some ignorant Americans who believe Barack Obama is a Muslim.
What's probably even more troublesome and dangerous are Americans who give Barack the benefit of the doubt because he is black and are so caught up with the color of his skin and his unique sounding name that they forget the "real" qualifications for President.

Who is the racist - The individual who looks at Barack Obama's experience, policy, and positions and decides not to vote for him or the individual who is so caught up with Obama's color and name, and insists on calling everyone who doesn't support Obama a racist?

The wife U.S. Republican John McCain callously left behind
By Sharon Churcher

Now that Hillary Clinton has at last formally withdrawn from the race for the White House, the eyes of America and the world will focus on Barack Obama and his Republican rival Senator John McCain.
While Obama will surely press his credentials as the embodiment of the American dream - a handsome, charismatic young black man who was raised on food stamps by a single mother and who represents his country's future - McCain will present himself as a selfless, principled war hero whose campaign represents not so much a battle for the presidency of the United States, but a crusade to rescue the nation's tarnished reputation.
Forgotten woman: But despite all her problems Carol McCain says she still adores he ex-husband
McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.
But there is another Mrs McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator's presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain's three eldest children.
And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain's first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.
She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam's infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.
But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.
When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons
had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.
Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.
Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.
For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

Golden couple: John and Cindy McCain at a charity gala in Los Angeles
Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. 'I have no bitterness,'
she says. 'My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn't the reason for my divorce.
'My marriage ended because John McCain didn't want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.'
Some of McCain's acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to 'play the field'. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.
McCain was then earning little more than £25,000 a year as a naval officer, while his new father-in-law, Jim Hensley, was a multi-millionaire who had impeccable political connections.
He first met Carol in the Fifties while he was at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. He was a privileged, but rebellious scion of one of America's most distinguished military dynasties - his father and grandfather were both admirals.
But setting out to have a good time, the young McCain hung out with a group of young officers who called themselves the 'Bad Bunch'.
His primary interest was women and his conquests ranged from a knife-wielding floozy nicknamed 'Marie, the Flame of Florida' to a tobacco heiress.
Carol fell into his fast-living world by accident. She escaped a poor upbringing in Philadelphia to become a successful model, married an Annapolis classmate of McCain's and had two children - Douglas and Andrew - before renewing what one acquaintance calls 'an old flirtation' with McCain.
It seems clear she was bowled over by McCain's attention at a time when he was becoming bored with his playboy lifestyle.
'He was 28 and ready to settle down and he loved Carol's children,' recalled another Annapolis graduate, Robert Timberg, who wrote The Nightingale's Song, a bestselling biography of McCain and four other graduates of the academy.
The couple married and McCain adopted Carol's sons. Their daughter, Sidney, was born a year later, but domesticity was clearly beginning
to bore McCain - the couple were regarded as 'fixtures on the party circuit' before McCain requested combat duty in Vietnam at the end of 1966.
He was assigned as a bomber pilot on an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Tonkin.
What follows is the stuff of the McCain legend. He was shot down over Hanoi in October 1967 on his 23rd mission over North Vietnam and was badly beaten by an angry mob when he was pulled, half-drowned from a lake.

War hero: McCain with Carol as he arrives back in the US in 1973 after his five years as a PoW in North Vietnam
Over the next five-and-a-half years in the notorious Hoa Loa Prison he was regularly tortured and mistreated.
It was in 1969 that Carol went to spend the Christmas holiday - her third without McCain - at her parents' home. After dinner, she left to drop off some presents at a friend's house.
It wasn't until some hours later that she was discovered, alone and in terrible pain, next to the wreckage of her car. She had been hurled through the windscreen.
After her first series of life-saving operations, Carol was told she may never walk again, but when doctors said they would try to get word to McCain about her injuries, she refused, insisting: 'He's got enough problems, I don't want to tell him.'
H. Ross Perot, a billionaire Texas businessman, future presidential candidate and advocate of prisoners of war, paid for her medical care.
When McCain - his hair turned prematurely white and his body reduced to little more than a skeleton - was released in March 1973, he told reporters he was overjoyed to see Carol again.
But friends say privately he was 'appalled' by the change in her appearance. At first, though, he was kind, assuring her: 'I don't look so good myself. It's fine.'
He bought her a bungalow near the sea in Florida and another former PoW helped him to build a railing so she could pull herself over the dunes to the water.
'I thought, of course, we would live happily ever after,' says Carol. But as a war hero, McCain was moving in ever-more elevated circles.
Through Ross Perot, he met Ronald Reagan, then Governor of California. A sympathetic Nancy Reagan took Carol under her wing.
But already the McCains' marriage had begun to fray. 'John started carousing and running around with women,' said Robert Timberg.
McCain has acknowledged that he had girlfriends during this time, without going into details. Some friends blame his dissatisfaction with Carol, but others give some credence to her theory of a mid-life crisis.
He was also fiercely ambitious, but it was clear he would never become an admiral like his illustrious father and grandfather and his thoughts were turning to politics.
In 1979 - while still married to Carol - he met Cindy at a cocktail party in Hawaii. Over the next six months he pursued her, flying around the country to see her. Then he began to push to end his marriage.
Carol and her children were devastated. 'It was a complete surprise,' says Nancy Reynolds, a former Reagan aide.
'They never displayed any difficulties between themselves. I know the Reagans were quite shocked because they loved and respected both Carol and John.'
Another friend added: 'Carol didn't fight him. She felt her infirmity made her an impediment to him. She justified his actions because of all he had gone through. She used to say, "He just wants to make up for lost time."'
Indeed, to many in their circle the saddest part of the break-up was Carol's decision to resign herself to losing a man she says she still adores.
Friends confirm she has remained friends with McCain and backed him in all his campaigns. 'He was very generous to her in the divorce but of course he could afford to be, since he was marrying Cindy,' one observed.
McCain transferred the Florida beach house to Carol and gave her the right to live in their jointly-owned townhouse in the Washington suburb of Alexandria. He also agreed to pay her alimony and child support.
A former neighbour says she subsequently sold up in Florida and Washington and moved in 2003 to Virginia Beach. He said: 'My impression was that she found the new place easier to manage as she still has some difficulties walking.'
Meanwhile McCain moved to Arizona with his new bride immediately after their 1980 marriage. There, his new father-in-law gave him a job and introduced him to local businessmen and political powerbrokers who would smooth his passage to Washington via the House of Representatives and Senate.
And yet despite his popularity as a politician, there are those who won't forget his treatment of his first wife.
Ted Sampley, who fought with US Special Forces in Vietnam and is now a leading campaigner for veterans' rights, said: 'I have been following John McCain's career for nearly 20 years. I know him personally. There is something wrong with this guy and let me tell you what it is - deceit.
'When he came home and saw that Carol was not the beauty he left behind, he started running around on her almost right away. Everybody around him knew it.
'Eventually he met Cindy and she was young and beautiful and very wealthy. At that point McCain just dumped Carol for something he thought was better.
'This is a guy who makes such a big deal about his character. He has no character. He is a fake. If there was any character in that first marriage, it all belonged to Carol.'
One old friend of the McCains said: 'Carol always insists she is not bitter, but I think that's a defence mechanism. She also feels deeply in his debt because in return for her agreement to a divorce, he promised to pay for her medical care for the rest of her life.'
Carol remained resolutely loyal as McCain's political star rose. She says she agreed to talk to The Mail on Sunday only because she wanted to publicise her support for the man who abandoned her.
Indeed, the old Mercedes that she uses to run errands displays both a disabled badge and a sticker encouraging people to vote for her ex-husband. 'He's a good guy,' she assured us. 'We are still good friends. He is the best man for president.'
But Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel - even by the standards of modern politics.
'McCain is the classic opportunist. He's always reaching for attention and glory,' he said.
'After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.'

Comparing McCain's lifetime of "perserverence in the face of adversity" to Barry O's is a JOKE! McCain looked evil in the face for over 5 years of torture and lived to tell about it and still contribute to society.

What has Barry Hussein done? Run out of pot one day and "perservere" in order to find more? Have his friend and mentor get out of the locked cell in the basement and speak publicly?

The WAPO is so far up Hussein's behind it has caused blindness.

Do not expect the press to uncover the truth about Obama or McCain. The forces behind these players are media corporations themselves. If McCain wants to uncover Obama, it will have to be up to him.
Whatever issues there are about McCain , it is going to be up to Obama.
The press does not usually follow truth, but power.

Atticus,

As a woman, and a feminist who has spent my life fighting for women's rights, and an Obama supporter, I object to your stereotyping Obama supporters as sexist.

Yes, McCain and the repubs badly want to divide us, and they're doing all they can to stoke the fires-- but voters will not be fooled this time. We will stand together, black, hispanic, asian, white, male, female, young, old, all of us-- to take back our country from the lunatics who have stolen it.

It was a difficult campaign because we are passionate people, but we have never been confused about the importance of winning this election.

We cannot afford John 100 years war McCain,or four more years of failed Bush policies. No more illegal, poorly planned wars, no more US involvement in torture, no more being spied on by our own government, no more corporate welfare, and shipping our jobs overseas.... no more secret meetings with oil companies to design our energy policies. No more tax breaks for SUV and Hummer drivers. No more neo-cons on the Supreme Court.

Women will not allow the election of John McSame.

Senator John McCain is a great American. When he was a POW, the Communists discovered John McCain was the son of one of the top U.S. commanders. They offered to release him early (to show that elite Americans receive preferential treatment). John McCain refused and said that he would not be released while his fellow comrade in arms were still held captive. The Communists tortured him brutally for this. To do this day, John McCain still cannot lift his arms up over his shoulders.

McCain knows about sacrifice and putting his country first.

Obama has done nothing for the service of this country. He is an opportunist. As a freshman Senator, he was rarely present for important votes because he was "too busy" pursing his own personal agenda. On the Iraq vote, Obama constantly derided Clinton for voting for the war - well Obama wasn't even there for the vote.

America needs someone who not only shows up for the job, but cares about America and what it means to be a leader of this great country. A leader is the ultimate servant. The President's role is to serve the American people. Obama knows nothing of service. Look past his machinations. McCain is the epitome of selfless service and is a true leader.

Posted by: RangerDan | June 9, 2008 2:09 PM

I admit to not seeing any challenges Obama has had to face that were unusual. He was lucky to be raised by a white set of grandparents rather than a black one; he lived in Hawaii, not Watts. He has done well to be sure, but the challenges were not particularly more difficult than for most other men. As for McCain, he was brought up in privilege and one might think that would have made him weak. He showed strength.

Publius (do you really think that highly of yourself?),

If you read the comments posted by John, C. Jones, et al. you would have read what I was responding to.

The great myth of the presidency during election season is that only presidents that are firm in their positions make good presidents. That it somehow displays a strength that is superior. This is absolutely false.

Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, all altered their positions and policy tacts based on the facts in front of them. Mr. Obama does that as well, but in this age of one liners fit to print, it is impossible to display the full rational thought that goes into important decisions.

When Mr. Obama speaks, it is very clear that he is an intelligent person that is committed to making decisions in the best interest of the United States and that protect the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Mr. McCain is committed to these as well, but he has not demonstrated the same intellectual fervor that is required in these complex times.

"More broadly, can Obama put more details into his message of change?"

Obama's campaign to date has done far more than to offer "details" regarding his message of change, although the details, too, are available for anyone to see. His campaign has served as a living example of his message. Those of us who have contributed to his campaign in various ways - money, phone banks, post card projects, etc. - have understood from at least as far back as Iowa that WE ARE THE CHANGE.

Before you start talking about Kool-Aid, think about it a minute. Obama's message is that the American people, not the lobbyists, should be running our country. Still following? He ran a grass-roots, bottom-up campaign, raising more money than any other candidate - from over a million and a half individual donors. When you are one of those donors, you know exactly where Obama's support is coming from.

He has also consistently emphasized the fact that we, the people, are the only ones with the power to change the way our government works. Remember his idea about giving everyone a seat at the table for reforming our health care system - and conducting the negotiations on C-Span in full view of the American people? That's an example of bringing transparency to government, an important component of making our elected officials accountable to the people, accountable to us.

Dan, if you're still unclear about Obama's vision of changing our government, you haven't been paying attention.

You are equating the struggles of an American hero who after years of torture in an enemy POW camp declined to be released without his men coming along, against the "struggle" of somebody who is still complaining that his student loan was a pain in the butt, but who has suffered no other recognizable adversity.

Are you on crack?

All you DEM and Obama haters. Keep living in the past and your nagativities while the rest of America moves on.

All you Clinton supporters - remember Roe vs. Wade. Do you honestly want to go backwards and let McSame dictate to you what to do with your own body.

Think straight and support President Obama.

Clinton on the ticket will spell disaster for the Democratic Party.

The only reason why people voted for her is because of her associations with Bill and to make history of picking the first female President. These are not solid reasons for picking the president.

Hillary and her misspeaks will only ruin the Obama campaign. No Clinton.

ADS - read the comments below. They say nothing about Barack being a Muslim. There is no talk of a conspiracy.

Look beyond his color, and beyond his name, and look at his positions (and in many instances, his lack thereof). This is what I and other Americans do. And what we find is a wholly inexperienced candidate who has contradicted himself on numerous issues and on other issues, refuses to take a stand.

Let me reiterate, look beyond Barack's color and his name. What do you find? If you see the qualifications for running the United States of America, by all means vote him. If not, look elsewhere, but do not fool yourself and use race and his name as a crutch.

Eighty-five percent (85%) od ASmericans tell pollsters that they do not like the path on which the current administration has taken our country.

EIGHTY-FIVE PERCENT!!

Obama understood that and understands that still.

He speaks eloquently about change in dozens of explicit policy discussions --- thozse who are really interested in hearing/reading his opinions and plans have but to click onto his website or google the topic(s).

After a frantic and desperate search though his entire 46-year life the only thing his detractors and opponents can come up with is a crazy preacher.

All the rest is total nonsense (Muslim, communist, unpatriotic, Ayers synpathizer, Rezko connections) and/or hyperbolic exageration.

There are no skeletons in Obama's closet --- and the wild-eyed and frothing of reactionaries who claim otherwise are slipping into a hysterical cacophony of noise that is embarrassing to behold.

Obama is what we need to right the ship of state and lead this country back to a high road of American values - like telling the truth and respecting the rule of law and seeking justice for all.

If you do not like him --- vote for Mccain.

But stop with all the stupid character assassination nonsense.

Stand up and fight for McCain like Americans --- stop the sneaky distortions and outright lies.

If you cannot beat Obama with an honest campaign on the issues -- deal with it.

Eighty-Five percent of Americans want change.

Gobama: your comments are a disgrace to good Obama supporters everywhere.

My apologies, on his behalf, to all Clinton supporters. I have a sneaking suspicion he/she is no Obama an supporter at all but Repub troll trying to sotke the fires of division.

Hillary has done what no one woman has before, and is to be congratulated and honored. I would have voted for her if she had won then nomination.

Here's one Obama supporter who can't wait for Hillary to win it in 2016.

From the comments on this message board (and comments from voters following the West Virginia primary), it appears that Mr. Obama's biggest hurdle will be the rush to ascribe a conspiracy to his background that will plant a sense of doubt into many voters whether or not they believe the conspiracy.

Mr. Obama's personal history and biography has been put before the public in full. Media accounts have shown all of it as well. However, the stories of being a secret Muslim, attending a fundamentalist Islamic school, and his belief that Rev. Wright's sermons are all truth are conspiracies that are alive and well.

As we learned when Dan Brown published "The Davinci Code," Americans love a good conspiracy. That coupled with the fact that tens of millions in the United States do not have the intellectual curiosity to discover the truth on their own could be downfall of Barack Obama.

Gobama,

Interesting sexist commentary. Your comments are typical of Obama supporters. Also, I'll give you a tip, you can't insult, ridicule, and attempt to humiliate someone, then expect them to embrace you with open arms.

Its also interesting how on the march for "progress" for black civil rights, people are trampling on the rights and concerns of other minorities: women, Asian Americans, and Latinos.

Enter the new Democratic party - a sexist, racist institution that will only continue to divide America in these increasingly troubled times. At the helm is Barack "Liar" Obama.

Hillary supporters need to stop whining. Your candidate lost - fact it, its over. To rephrase Ms. Clinton's words, go back into the kitchen because you have no place in politics.

America no longer needs your kind of politics. Now be a good sport and take your place, on your knees supporting the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama.

Clinton supporters, get over it - its our TIME now.

HOW OBAMA "WON"

Even though Obama's past reeks with associating with shady characters, terrorist supporters, and a racist anti-American "Pastor", sexism, race, and the "Wright baggage" not being known during the first 11 primaries overrode Clinton's support of more astute people. Then the media in effect gave Obama millions of dollars worth of free advertising by mostly giving him a free pass. This because they did not want to risk being accused of playing the race card. Also Obama outspent Clinton by far on ads, and he still beat her by only 2%. Without the above Clinton would be the nominee today.

That Obama received the above support to achieve the position of democratic candidate for the Presidency does not speak well for the democrats or even for America. Too bad.

Most thinking americans are leaning towards libertarianism and a third party option. While it did not happen this time around, it will eventually happen. McCain for these people is the better of two evils. McCain can be influenced to make bold economic changes in america. Obama wants to inflate welfarism without taking care of the weakening dollar, inflation, or new age lite corporate fascism. McCain realizes the world is still far from being civilized and just. Obama does not know how to fight or stand firm against determined enemies, this is why Obama will lose.

Sorry, to break the bad news: he is a liar, and just a puppet of the Capital behind him.

He was a show on the stage, hired by Ariel and co. Capital, and the well paid organizers were successful to steal all caucuses and some primaries.

His parents Rosenberg style Soviet sympathizers or worse.

He went on an undeserved affirmative action tour to colleges, and qualifies as the twin of Condoleeza Rice, not too bright, but a genial show.

Obama was a disgrace in the debate. The war authorization is such an empty argument.

Bush and McCain make more sense than my liberal friends, after the surge.

And on Iran, the junta is playing a good chess, and Obama and co. is outgunned by the mullah`s corrupt money.

Posted by: Obama's Middle Name: Liar | June 9, 2008 1:13 PM

You are uninformed. Obama has a freak show around him.
He is the hand-picked superstar of the corrupt Daley machine of Chicago.

Once Rezco is convicted, and now the nomination is complete, the Republicans will ensure that Osama is asked all the questions about where all the campaign funds came from--the board appointments and of course the $3.5M that Rezco laundered from the Iraqi billionaire from London.

Stay tuned.

Obama`s media machine (Axelrod: Google: the secret side of Axelrod) is without scruples and scary. Despite Obama`s bizarre pastor(s) and other racist, anti-American associates, Obama`s machine has managed to sell the message of hope & change not to the well-educated, as they would have the masses believe, but to the worst educated and most naive, the latter being the younger demographics.

Obama has already proven himself corruptable, a liar and ignorant, tossing around comments as it suits his agenda at the time, including the recent Ausschwitz faux-pas. He is not a positive presidential prospect.

American`s are naive , I agree. If a person as Obama can prosway a tremendous number of people to vote for"change" without any preconditions is very dangerous. The problem with american public is , if the leftist dislike like Bush for example, they`re going in for a"CHANGE".The reality is a president can`t do anything without congress approval. So look in the Obama`s "change". First he wants the taxes to increase, doesn`t matter how he explaines it, # 2 he`s for govermental universal health insurance, which Hillary tried and didn`t pass and it won`t work in USA/we want to chose insurance/, # 3 he wants to dictate how the teachers were be paid/is communism/, # 4 he has no idea how to deal with the outside world/ he`ll talk to anyone, maybe Bin Laden, he has no expirience and most of his talk is empthy. He has no accomplishments at all.So the masses running to vote for him, but in the end there will be no "CHANGE" even in our pockets.
