Lieberman Points to McCain's Son in Defending His Dad
By Jonathan Weisman
In responding to furious Democratic attacks on John McCain's morning Iraq comments, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) broke a McCain campaign taboo this afternoon -- he invoked the service of McCain's son in Iraq.
McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, has rarely mentioned his youngest son Jimmy's deployment to Iraq, saying he would not use his Marine son's service as a political tool. But Lieberman did just that on a conference call convened by the McCain campaign. Lieberman was responding to Democratic attacks on comments McCain made this morning on the "Today Show," when he suggested the date when troops could come home from Iraq was not so important, as long as casualties had fallen to levels comparable to Japan, Germany and South Korea, where U.S. forces have been stationed for decades, with few incidents.
What has been "most outrageous," Lieberman said, have been Democratic suggestions that McCain is "out of touch with the needs of our troops and insensitive to their families."
McCain knows the sacrifice those troops have made and the burdens on their families, Lieberman said, because he saw it first hand during his father's service in the Navy, his own service and incarceration in Vietnam, his eight visits to Iraq, "and the fact that his son was deployed to Iraq."
When a reporter asked whether the campaign would be invoking Jimmy McCain's service more often, McCain national security adviser Randy Scheunemann said he would not comment. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), who was also on the call, quipped that if Scheunemann wasn't commenting, neither was he.
