McCain's Declaration of Independence

By Howard Kurtz
The Ad: John McCain stood up to the president and sounded the alarm on global warming five years ago. Today he has a realistic plan that will curb greenhouse gas emissions. A plan that will help grow our economy and protect our environment. Reform. Prosperity. Peace. John McCain.

Analysis:There is nothing subtle about this ad: the Arizona senator is explicitly trying to distance himself from an unpopular president. And his chosen issue is climate change, which just happens to have special appeal for independent voters.

McCain broke with President Bush last month in proposing mandatory curbs on greenhouse gas emissions -- a step the administration has long resisted -- along with emissions credits that polluting companies could trade. McCain's approach calls for a 60 percent reduction in emissions by 2050, compared to the 80 percent cut being pushed by his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, and many scientists.

The commercial, with a soft-voiced female narrator, begins with speeded-up images of polluting factories and traffic yielding to a setting sun. It ends with an image of McCain as the western outdoorsman, wearing a work shirt and baseball cap as he stands on a mountain ridge.
While McCain is using global warming to neutralize Obama's charge that he's running for Bush's third term, he angered environmentalists this week by proposing to lift a ban on offshore oil drilling.

Unfortunately you don't know how to research and read or you are basing your facts on right wing propaganda. McCain was a prisoner in Vietnam, but he was given special treatment, signed documents discracing the USA and nearly refused to leave there when they were released. All of this is from every single one of his American co-prisoners. It's even on film that he signed documents to nix the USA!

McCain's wife has alot of issues, but let's look at his previous wife, abuse and marriage. Have you researched that Mary? Please do.. you'll find he was a wife beater, slept around on his wife (with the current wife) and then dumped her like a hot potato after her car accident... left stranded, broke and with kids! That's the thanks she gets for waiting for him for many years while a POW.

And I have done 14 years of the US Army and going on 27+ years of federal service with the DoD... I can honestly say that the GOP is about as corrupt as it ever will be... and four more years of McSame will possibly turn this country into a Fourth Reich and with a constitution that is toothless, worthless and each one of you will be thrown the terror scare tactics whenever they think they need power (or regain it). The Democrats are not much better... but FAR better than what the GOP have to offer.

Lastly, these polls are a GOP scare tactic, trickery. There is true competition between McSame and the Democrats (Obama)... it is all the GOP shill tactics to get their base back! Quit reading only the main stream news.

@ Realist2008:

you wrote: "McCain needs to get elected and keep the liberals who are destroying our country out of the Presidency."

It's a conservative administration that's been in power for the past eight years, champ.

Here are some of the highlights of the Bush administration, with regard to "destroying our country:
1 - The doctored "intelligence" and subsequent invasion (and continued occupation) of Iraq
2 - The failure to anticipate or properly help in the restoration of New Orleans
3 - Abu Ghraib
4 - Warrantless wiretaps
5 - Relying on China to fund our staggering debt so we can continue to engage in war
6 - Forsaking stem cell research and other critical aspects of science and innovation
7 - Embracing free trade and the global market to the detriment of our own economic self-sufficiency
8 - A callous disregard for any environmental concerns (which are neither a hoax nor a fantasy but supported by science, which the Bush administration abhors)

The base of the GOP has moved so far to the right that it is considered "independent" to merely recognize the reality of climate change.

When will the Neo-Cons understand that true lasting change (i.e. either domestically or internationally) does not come from bombs, bullets or more drilling. Innovation and individualism is what Americans are all about so why all the subsides for oil companies? Regardless of who wins the Presidency oil prices are continuously going to increase. America needs to begin a new energy revolution and lead the world with its technological advantage before we lose it.

the wind blowing his shirt's flaps are hilarious... what a joke indeed

McCain has already proven he is smart. He married a good looking wealthy woman with big breasts and who owns beer distributorship. Good looking and she is a pilot, too. LUCKY MAN.

Nice try, my friend. McCain's record as a Bush sympathizer is as plain as the nose on your face. And this was after Bush dragged him behind the shed in S. Carolina and had his way with him. What a tough guy! Sorry, my friend. The time to stand up against the Bush Crime family is long past....and you didn't do it when it counted.

McCain needs to get elected and keep the liberals who are destroying our country out of the Presidency. Obama does not have one iota of useful experience and yet the liberal media has given him a free pass when it comes to challenging him on anything (character, experience and reality) It's all about being PC with this guy..we can't attack him in anyway shape or form for we will be labelled racists! Bunk! Challenge his credentials BEFORE it is too late!

This ad is really creepy. It starts out with frightening imagery and intense, uncomfortable music. Then the soothing words "John McCain". It seems like an obvious psych 101 trick to me- John McCain will sooth the feelings of anxiety that you have about the uncertain state of our world.

Texas has off shore drilling and by the way, we win Texas are doing just fine, thank you. Our state continues to have increase in population, people moving here from other states because we have JOBS. We also have lots of beaches and shore land which we take care not to have trash and litter as the debri from ships in the Gulf of Mexico is cleaned up; we also have volunteer groups who clean some beaches. Off shore drilling is not anti-environment. Norway get their oil from off shore drilling and it's very safe. Would anyone say that Norway is not an environmentally friendly country?

This country is losing its focus and deteriorating very fast. All of the ideals, morals, honor, ethics, patriotism, family, country are going by the way side. Our ancestors who made this country the greatest country in the world would be horrified to see all the crime, misguided people who live here now. Now we have a man who is a radical, ultra liberal running for president, one with no experience, with a silver tongue and friends who are our country's enemies. Too bad future generations will not know what it is like to grow up in a fairly safe, family-orientated country. It's bad enough now, but electing Obama will be tragic.

This is a joke, right?

Never seen millions of frustrated, angry Americans demonstrate in the streets, like they do in Europe and the rest of the world? If the U.S. grants amnesty and gives citizenship to 12 to 30 million illegal migrants, as Senators Obama and McCain propose, those naturalized citizens could possibly add 120 million U.S. and foreign-born relatives to the U.S. in the next 20 years, who all consume energy. Haha yes McCain is such a champion of "green" causes...funny this ad didn't mention his call to end the ban on oil drilling.

only an idiot with his head in the sand would think that the Israel Hamas truce came out of pure aerial bombardment. Negotiating and actually talking to your enemy is by far the first and most important step in building a lasting peace. Consider Nixon and Regan and their negotiations with the Russians and Chinese.
Bombing Iran will not bring the evil terrorist to their knees, it will, as can be seen in Iraq / Afghan, energize the extremist minority and cause their numbers to swell.
Obama will win the foreign affairs contest if he sticks to the logical argument he has already put forward.
Bombs simply cant win wars anymore.

There might be global warming. Is it caused by CO2 or something else? In chemical reactions no atoms are lost or gained therefore we have as much carbon now an in the beginning. It is just in a different form such as a gas instead of a solid. If CO2 is the problem then we need to remove the CO2 from the air by reforestation and eliminating and carbon based energy generation. This could be done neuclear and other forms of electircal generation. Leaving the carbon base for automotive use until that can be replaced also.

Thanks Howard for reminding us that 5 years ago McCain had a good idea. So, what did he do? Nothing. That is usually what McCain does! This man of action will put us all to sleep. Listen to his speeches. McCain has very little substance, my friends.

Posted by: DenisR | June 17, 2008 12:33 PM

Bush has a wide stance. McCain is in the next stall.

Posted by: D MINER | June 17, 2008 12:23 PM

As angry as I am at both parties for congressional inaction and partisanship it isn't too hard to understand when you read the inane childish barbs by the public. McSame, Cindy and drug use etc.

The future of our country depends on our citizens using common sense and voting for people with clearly stated plans and goals. Failed ideas of class warfare, tax the rich to make things better for others have never worked, no matter how eloquent the speaker.

Posted by: scottm | June 17, 2008 12:21 PM

the truce is going to last? haha - naive!

Posted by: you think | June 17, 2008 12:19 PM

The biggest problem with the "global warming" issue is that it is too narrow. The real problem is obvious when one take a step back to look at how our actions are affecting the environment in total. We are clearly damaging our environment. The important question is are we destroying it, and can it recover?

Posted by: Javalation | June 17, 2008 12:14 PM

Actually McCain's nuclear power plant plan is spot on. Its the main reason, I'm considering jumping from Obama to him.

Posted by: Titus | June 17, 2008 12:12 PM

Cindy McCain's drug addict history is coming soon to a cinema near you.

Posted by: Sallym | June 17, 2008 12:11 PM

Global warming hoax?? Maybe it's better to buy into that one instead of the Iraq WMD hoax....

Posted by: Hugo | June 17, 2008 12:04 PM

Officials: Israel, Hamas Agree to Truce.

Funny how that happened with no negotiations, huh?

Seems the world keeps catching up with Obama, just a year or so behind.

Maybe McSame should ask him what we should do next.

Posted by: Obama 08 | June 17, 2008 11:51 AM

Too bad McCain has bought into the global warming hoax. If the world thought the earth was flat, I guess the practical politician would need to pay lip-service to that also.

To help the planet surf with www.treehoo.com the web that plants trees for most of its profit fighting global warming and climate change! It's nice, it's good and it's free. Can you ask for more?
