Terrorism Takes Center Stage as Obama Responds to McCain Camp's Charges

Updated 3:54 p.m.
By Alec MacGillis
It was only a matter of time, but the McCain and Obama campaigns today engaged more directly than ever before on one of the central disagreements between them -- the high stakes question of how to pursue Islamic terrorists.

This morning, McCain advisers attacked Barack Obama's comments in an interview yesterday with ABC News, calling them "dangerous." Obama had pointed to the prosecutions of the extremists involved in the 1993 World Trade Center attack as proof that the U.S. legal system was capable of bringing terrorists to justice, and the McCain camp charged that this betrayed a pre-Sept. 11 complacency and belief that terrorism could be addressed using law enforcement tools alone.

Two hours later, the Obama campaign responded that Obama's confidence in U.S. civilian or military courts to try suspected terrorists did not mean that he believed in an exclusively law enforcement-based approach to hunting terrorists. In a conference call with reporters, Sen. John Kerry (who faced the same soft on terror charges in his 2004 presidential campaign) and former counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke noted that Obama is proposing a comprehensive approach that includes military measures, including a possible invasion of Pakistani border areas if the U.S. has a solid tip on Al-Qaeda whereabouts and Pakistan refuses to act.

In fact, Kerry -- who had considered McCain as a possible vice presidential runningmate in 2004 -- and Clarke noted, McCain and other Republicans had criticized Obama for that very suggestion of military action in Pakistan. And, they pointed out, Obama's call for granting habeas corpus rights to individuals held at Guantanamo Bay was upheld by the Supreme Court last week.

Kerry and Clarke went on to criticize McCain's approach to fighting terrorism as ineffective and outdated. McCain's approach, they charged, had relied too much on the military, diverted resources and attention from Al-Qaeda and aided terrorist recruitment. Meanwhile, the circumvention of the U.S. legal system in handling suspected terrorists had undermined America's standing in the Muslim world.

"This is really an important day in marking a real line between John McCain's policies and Barack Obama's," said Kerry. "The McCain campaign has defined a road to defeat and, frankly, to more disastrous policies that haven't worked... [McCain] has fully embraced, willfully and openly, the failed policy of the Bush administration of the past seven years. He is really defending a policy that is indefensible."

Kerry added: "John McCain is Washington's biggest supporter for worst foreign policy decision of our generation. He failed to learn the lesson of 9/11 and we're paying for that failure today... He is continuing a legal approach that has violated our Constitution, failed to prosecute terrorist, failed to bring them to justice, failed to have verdicts, failed to bring them to jail, and failed to lead the world. If you want to talk about going backwards... John McCain has done that."

In the McCain campaign's attack this morning, 9-11 Commission member John Lehmann argued that the 1993 trial impeded intelligence gathering by placing under seal some findings about the suspects that then-CIA director George Tenet later said would have been helpful in pursuing Al Qaeda before Sept. 11. Tenet "personally told me he did not get to see the evidence that would have linked some of the perpetrators to Khalid Sheik Mohammed," the mastermind of 9-11, Lehman said. "Dots would have been connected well before."

While not endorsing that dramatic claim, which goes beyond the findings of the 9-11 Commission's report, Clarke conceded that there "clearly was a mistake at some level" in the decision to seal evidence collected in the trial."

But, Clarke continued, future trials of terrorism suspects could easily correct for that by making certain evidence available for intelligence use. He rejected another McCain claim, that bringing terrorists captured abroad into military or civilian courts would complicate matters by requiring adherence to rules for collecting evidence and maintaining a chain of custody. "Playing by the rules can be done and has been done," Clarke said.

Notably, Clarke did appear at one point to back up a key Republican talking point, that Iraq is now the key front on terrorism. Democrats have tried to argue in recent years that many of those battling and killing Americans in Iraq are homegrown insurgents, not Al-Qaeda warriors. But Clarke said that Al-Qaeda had not attacked on American soil since Sept. 11 because it had instead decided that it was easier to attack America in Iraq: "They've killed 4,000 and wounded 25,000," he said, contradicting the Democratic case that many if not most casualties have been inflicted by non-Al-Qaeda Iraqis.

But Clarke was fully on message with his charge that McCain's attack today was a "Karl Rove strategy" and "straight out of the Republican playbook."

"I'm frankly a little disgusted by some of the attacks of some of my friends on the McCain campaign to use the same old tired tactics of the past several campaigns, trying to paint one party as weak on terrorism and completely distorting the record of pone party, to drive a wedge for partisan advantage and to frighten Americans," he said.

Do you notice how the liberals have never PROVEN Hussein had no ties to 9/11?

LOL Newcomb! You tell it like it is! If Osama/Obama/Obeaner had his way all the troops would be back home right now and Iraq would be in the hands of the Iraq people who already hate us. Bush has taken measures to protect us while Clinton never did anything except stick fags in the military because he was your typical liberatard! People need to WAKE UP! Ostupama doesn't even want to wear a damn flag pin! That's how much he hates America! Is that who we want to run the country! Another typical libby!

To Lawrence G. Borne
Your right on one count "Obama has none right"
If our current policy is not working, and most nations don't like us, why then have there been fewer terrorist attacks on our soil during Bush's term than Clinton's?
If they dislike us why do so many want our business, invest in our country, immigrate both legally and illegally. So we are so arrogant that we provide freedom to millions of people who want a better life, one where they do not get stopped by police on their way to vote, one where if you do not bribe the local government they shut down your business. One where they get to express their religious beliefs (except if they are standing behind the Democrats nominee)

I like most of my veteran brothers and sister believe that diplomacy first, second and third, when all has failed war, but let it be ruthless and effective. This is one of the painful lessons McCain learned in Vietnam(a war brought to you by the Democrats) and I have sadly seen that when Barack Hussein Obama has commented about our service members he is very nonchalant and glib. The more he who's his true colors the more and more I distrust him to represent the American values I hold dear to my heart, and have sworn to uphold in oath.
But because our enemy does not give in we should just pack up and go home give up the fight.

And Michael no it does not gall us republican could not balance the budget, it bothers us that he could not be fiscally responsible. 9/11 happened on his watch but the planning and opportunity to stop it happened under Clintons ever so vigilant eye, oh wait he was to busy with cigars, interns, impeachment proceeding, and his wife own financial woes. To take care of the hardest job on the planet.

Foreign Policy exsperience, well lets look at something here. McCain was a prisoner of war yes, does that mean he has practical Foreign Police Exsperience? No. Obama has none right? Well if what our Government is doing now is not working, which it isnt maybe we should look at another way of doing things.? If McCain thinks he can use Foreign Policy thats been put in place by the Bush administation then we are screwed, we dont need more screw ups and head for another World war. Most of the Nations dont like use because of Bush's attitude, thats one of a DICKtator that thinks his oppinion is the only one that is correct. Thats an attitude of arogance. you can't just say I'm right this is a narrow minded way of doing things. We must be open minded and willing to work with other leaders, rather than try to force our ideas upon them. No one likes to be told what they are going to do. Sure being strong is good but we can't force things thats the fastest way to get a negative responce.

C00ner might I recommend you shut up? The 90s were hell where liberals ran the country and flocked through the streets. Until not too long ago intelligent design wasn't even considered a reputable science because the liberals hated the idea of anything that proved God's existence. I agree with Former Marine you should be sent out to Iraq since you think the demoRATS are so great.

Posted by: Republican and proud | June 18, 2008 8:21 PM

I know it's galling for Republicans to admit that the last president to balance the budget was a Democrat, but that's reality. Bush has been adding half trillion a year to the federal debt for the last 8 years. And yes, Clinton was far from perfect, but 9/11 happened on Bush's watch and the Iraq War was a neocon wishdream cooked up in the early 90's. So, I don't think the Republicans have any room for lecturing the Democrats on foreign policy or anti-terrorism.

Posted by: Michael | June 18, 2008 7:11 PM

Oh yeah, almost forgot. There was a little incident that happened after 2000... It was called the WTC ATTACKS.

Thank god we had a president with a spine that actually went after our enemies. Unlike Clinton that let Osama bin laden camp out in the middle-east for a few year. After we were attacked. Twice.

Unbelievable.

In 2000, we had a budget surplus of $230 billion under Democratic leadership, the economy was expanding, gas was $1.70 a gallon, and all we had to worry about was the president's philandering. In disgust, we elected GW Bush and eight years later all we have to worry about is $5 gas, two wars, a faltering economy, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, inflation, etc. etc. Time to get the Democrats back in power. Obama reminds me of Clinton, minus the bimbos.

Posted by: Michael | June 18, 2008 7:11 PM

Jay Leno didn't say that, you just attributed that to him like when some with that racist speech you guys "credited" Michael Richards with.
Plus that's a completely retarded argument considering we had that stuff ten years ago, so nice try attempting to credit Bush for that stuff. Especially the one about "religious freedom". Hah.
It's more like 21% that still believe his crap, by the way. Learn to count.
Still, I have to give you credit, Americans are ingrates, especially the ones who have family members that died in Iraq. The next time some ungrateful mother crying about her dead son, remind her that she has clean motels.
Get that Bush out of your mouth.

No matter what your political convictions are, this is a eye opener.
What a thankless people we are!!!

Jay Leno on President Bush (Surprising)

Jay Leno wrote this; it's the Jay Leno we don't often see....

As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I
ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and
it seems to hit the mark.

'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some
Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the
source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are
Unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the
Country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of
the citizenry just aren't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle
dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?''

A.. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours
a day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning
in the summer and heating in the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a
job?

D.. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at
any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the
last year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from
the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Oceanwithout having to present
identification papers as we move through each state?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we
Would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying
cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency
workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a
helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who
own a home.

J.. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate
Case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and
use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your
family, and your belongings.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen
TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and
A bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against
Attack or loss.

L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs
or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where
90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious, social and political
freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. Yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war
and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31
percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the
nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to
bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who
has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the
spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander
in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show?
Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you
couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be
glad?

Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually
caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was
failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day. Make no
mistake about it.

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve,
and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently
no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to
refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than
honorabe discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable''
dischargeafter a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69
percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds
it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car
crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade
at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit
corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to
defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask
why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about
how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this
way......Absolutely Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the
bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have
as country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the
most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day,
or at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes,
tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms
tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird
flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God
out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

This just in:Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women's headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.

WOW and the Dem's think the Republicans are going trample on thier civil liberties.

Does anyone wonder,
who will the soldiers in Iraq vote for?

Getting killed by snipers and IEDs is really getting old.

Posted by: McOld | June 18, 2008 4:27 AM

Jim might I recomend you shutting up? Being there on 911 is nothing to brag about frankly I wouldn't go anywhere near New York on account of the smell. In case you forgot 911 is why we're in Iraq because it's the war on terror which was started back on that grim day, other wise known as the war on us from the terrorist muslims. Keep Osama out of office! Vote against liberal terrorist values!

Posted by: Republican and proud | June 18, 2008 12:54 AM

Nice post Jim. Some people just don't get it. All they see is a black man and say no way. They don't understand that our country is on the line. I don't believe for a minute that those buildings on 9,11 fell on their own. We have some corrupt people running the show, and they need to be locked up.

Posted by: Mike | June 17, 2008 11:34 PM

Will you Ding Dongs stop screwing up the page. It takes 20 minutes to get to the bottom.

Posted by: Mike | June 17, 2008 11:24 PM

I am a firefighter here in NY and was working on 9-11. I'm saddened and horrified that this was used to start a war while the criminals who made that day happen are still romping around freely. The Bush Administration has been so corrupt that it's just shocking to me that anyone would back it in any way. I will be voting for Senator Obama. Even though there's dozens of you fellow voicers that clearly have no proof of your lies. If you really love your country don't lie about an elected leader. If you know of a truth then speak it loudly.

I don't trust McCain, even though I used to really appreciate him and his views. Now his views are no more than the Republican party views that are corrupted. If he is elected you can say goodbye to what you think of as The United States, and say hello to a corporate controlled fascist state.

Posted by: Jim | June 17, 2008 11:23 PM

Impressive and insightful post, Lisa --
thank goodness you were not too lazy or stupid to articulate your views. What a loss that would have been for people reading through these comments. One might hazard a guess that you are a Republican.

So here's the real question of this election. Will people enthused and positive about Obama's candidacy outnumber those who the GOP will try to drive to the polls using deception, fear-mongering, lies and race-baiting. Clearly, no one is going to bother going to the polls out of enthusiasm over voting FOR McCain.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 17, 2008 11:15 PM

Man it's funny the way these Clinton nut jobs try to get something on Obama but always come up short. Everytime Obama talks to someone you have a hundred people digging into their past. It always turns out the same way, Obama did nothing but gets blamed for it anyway. You people need to try harder than Rezco, Wright, Johnson, Rich, Michelle, Aiers, your making fools of yourselves. Compared to Hillary and McCain Obama is a saint. Do you really think we care if someone Obama knows gave someone else Obama knows a loan. If your friend owned a bank and was going to knock a point off the interest on a loan are you going to say no. It's not against the law. Wake up already, Hillary tried the smear factor and look where it got her. Go Obama.

I worry more about Bush and his Skull and Bones buddies setting up an attack on us more than the terrorists. That's exactly what he did to get us to go to war. Right now they are trying everything they can to stay in Iraq to get that oil. We may even see an attack before election day. Bush and his cronies are on some kind of world order mission. The EU is part of that mission. Looks like they were delt a blow when Ireland didn't fall for it yesterday. Did you see that lady that was the first to get a chip put in her arm. It's part of the Bush world security order. These people are nuts, and will do anything for money. Those people that are locked up in cuba are show people. Bush would have let them go after their fake death. He don't want them tried in civilian court because they might be found guilty and spill the beans on Bush's little set up. This is going to be one great election, things are starting to come out of the closet already.

For the record, I'm not a neocon nor was that simply rhetoric, it was a valid comparison of this election and that of 1976 and how we can learn from the past or make the same mistake and change at all costs because of an unpopular administration.

Now Obama needs to turn his attention to another member of that committee - Eric Holder, a former No. 2 in the Clinton Justice Department who played a key role in processing the infamous last-minute pardon of the notorious tax-cheat fugitive Marc Rich. ... As for Holder, he helped push the pardon on behalf of Rich's lawyer, former Clinton White House counsel Jack Quinn - whose help he reportedly sought in trying to become attorney general in an Al Gore administration. The pardon deal completely bypassed prosecutors in the case, who were irate when they learned of it. Even Democratic pit bull Rep. Henry Waxman said the Rich pardon "set a double standard for the wealthy and the powerful."

There's _NO_ way I can vote for McCain after this. He may not be Bush, but what good is that when he plans to continue with all the evil things Bush has done, like torture?

By doing such despicable things, we become no different than the evil we're supposed to be fighting!

Rendell, who plans to campaign on Obama's behalf and raise money for him, said tonight's event in Philadelphia is a joint fundraiser for Obama and the cash-strapped Democratic National Committee.

But in a sign of the urgency to raise campaign cash, Rendell said Obama didn't want to reschedule tonight's fundraiser, even though the governor warned him that many Philadelphia donors were headed to the New Jersey shore for the weekend.

Rendell said Obama told him: "We don't need the people. We just need the checks."

Gotta say though, McCant sure does a smooth job of switchbacking, every policy idea, every idea ever to pass his way he gets behind, then stabs in the back..Sounds like a perfect senior for the job

It doesn't take much experience to pick up the phone and send a bunch of our soldiers to war. However, it takes a moron to get 4100 of our soldiers killed for oil. I'm tired of talking about 9.11 because Bush let it happen. He may have even set it up. Those morons are trying to tell us that a plane hit the pentagon. When they were asked what happened to the plane they said it burnt. OK. A whole jumbo jet burnt and vanished into thin air. All the bodies vanished to. Bones and all. No black box, no engines, no tail section, totally gone. They even ran across the street and confiscated all the security tapes that shown what happened and got rid of them. Bush is a murderer.

A few unplesant truths about NObama..

Don't Tell Obama, McCain: Conventions Taking in Corporate Cash
2008-06-10 00:01 (New York)

By Jonathan D. Salant
June 10 (Bloomberg) -- John McCain, who wrote the law
banning corporate donations to the political parties, and Barack
Obama, who refuses lobbyist money, will be nominated for
president at conventions largely funded by industries whose
Washington clout they've railed against on the campaign trail.
Convention organizers in Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul,
hosting this year's quadrennial gatherings, are seeking donations
of as much as $5 million each, part of an effort to raise $100
million between them from private sources.
The corporate cash, from companies such as AT&T Inc. and
Visa Inc., may undermine a central focus of the McCain and Obama
campaigns.
``The conventions are a place where money and influence can
flow,'' said Bob Edgar, a former Democratic U.S. representative
from Pennsylvania who now is president of Common Cause, a
Washington-based group pushing for tougher ethics rules. Obama
and McCain ``have decided out of expediency that they'll be
silent on some of these issues until they get elected.''
It wasn't supposed to work this way. The same Watergate-era
campaign finance law that provides taxpayer money to presidential
nominees does the same for national conventions. This year, each
party will get $17 million from the government, plus another $50
million for security costs.

Lobbyist Influence

While Obama backed the Republicans' 2005 energy legislation
that included $11.6 billion in taxpayer subsidies for oil and
utility companies, he has taken aim at the influence of lobbyists
from the energy industry as well as those representing health-
care companies and Wall Street.
``We can't afford to settle for a Washington where our
energy policy, and our health-care policy, and our tax policy is
sold to the highest-bidding lobbyist,'' Obama said in a May 3
speech in Indianapolis.
Xcel Energy Inc., which owns electric utilities,
UnitedHealth Group Inc., the largest U.S. health insurer, as well
as a law firm lobbying for private-equity firms and hedge funds,
are all donors to the Aug. 25-28 Democratic convention in Denver.
Lobbyists for those groups can get credentials to both
conventions or related events, allowing them to mingle with
lawmakers acting on legislation important to them.

Farm Bill

McCain has also pledged to curb the influence of lobbyists
as president and has banished them from his paid campaign staff.
``I upset the special interests and Washington lobbyists
when I fought for ethics reform and to stop union bosses and
corporations from writing million-dollar checks to political
campaigns,'' McCain said at a town-hall meeting in New Hampshire
last November.
Archer-Daniels-Midland Co., the world's largest grain
processor, benefited from and lobbied on a just-passed
legislation renewing farm programs for five years, a bill McCain
criticized. ADM is supporting the Sept. 1-4 Republican convention
in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
AT&T and Visa are also among the 23 companies that are
helping to fund both conventions, according to the host
committee's Web sites. AT&T wants immunity from lawsuits for
helping the government wiretap Americans without warrants. Visa
opposes efforts to restrict its ability to raise interest rates.
Xcel, UnitedHealth and ADM have also given to both conventions.
Company spokesmen said the donations are given to
participate in the political process, not because of pending
legislation. The candidates declined to address the unrestricted
convention donations.

Obama on Lobbyists

Jen Psaki, a spokeswoman for Obama, said ``Barack Obama has
done more to curb the influence of special interests and
lobbyists than any other candidate in this race.'' McCain
spokesman Brian Rogers didn't respond to several requests for
comment.
Officials of the convention host committees say the donors
are motivated by civic pride. ``They get that it's good for our
cities and our state,'' said Cynthia Lester, president of the
Minneapolis-St. Paul committee.
The connections between the candidates and the companies go
beyond the conventions. One of McCain's $250,000 fundraisers,
lobbyist Wayne Berman, counts AT&T, UnitedHealth and Visa among
his clients.
In February, by a vote of 67-31, the Senate endorsed
granting immunity to the phone companies. McCain voted in favor
of immunity; Obama opposed it.

Sidley Austin

While Obama doesn't accept donations from lobbyists, he does
from others in law firms that lobby. One of his biggest sources
of campaign cash, Sidley Austin LLP, was paid $6.7 million last
year to lobby by clients such as Eli Lilly & Co., which has given
to both conventions.
Obama's ban on lobbyist donations doesn't apply to
convention contributors such as Brownstein Hyatt Farber & Schreck
LLP, which lobbies for Apollo Management LP, a private-equity
firm, and Citadel Investment Group LLC, which operates hedge
funds. Both are fighting efforts to tax carried interest -- the
fees received for managing investments -- as ordinary income.
Lobbying expert Rogan Kersh, associate dean of New York
University's Wagner School of Public Service, said the corporate
money could muffle the candidates' campaigns against so-called
special interests.
``Corporate underwriting has become as much a part of party
conventions as funny hats and long speeches,'' Kersh said. ``But
in a campaign devoted to change, both parties' much-proclaimed
reform candidates will have their halos tarnished by the
corporate largesse.''

Since when did Kerry have an epiphany? Was n't McCain his first choice to be his running mate; until McCain told Kerry to go **&& off, at which point, Kerry turned to Fat cat lawyer Edwards.

And Gore, the same Gore, who thought Lieberman was the best man to be the President should some thing happen to him.

These two guys have no clue how to pick people to the top jobs in the country.

Now suddenly we are supposed to listen to Kerry and Gore on who we should vote for?

McCain "riding the wings of environmentalists through the primaries"

Ha, yeah, you can't win a republican primary without the environmentalist vote. Thats the funniest thing I've heard all day. Conservatives do care about the environment though, just don't want to shut down the economy just in case something might happen.

Just listen to McCain and you will see that he is almost exactly like Bush. If you want four more years of this mayhem then cast your vote for McCain but if you want a change from the tired old Bush regime then give Obama a chance. Bush, from day one of his presidency wanted to drill for oil in ANWAR, now McCain after riding the wings of environmentalists through the primaries, wants to drill in ANWAR. If you want to continue the old Bush rhetoric of scare tactics concerning the safety of this country cast your vote for McCain.

asked "And how does being a POW qualify him for President?? "

It doesn't, if that was the extent of his experience it would be dumb to elect him president. His POW experience was part of his military experience which qualified him to be the Navy's liason to the US Senate which qualified him to run for US Senator, which he was elected and is now serving his FOURTH 6 year term. Obama is about halfway through his FIRST term, most of which he has spent campaigning instead of obtaining the necessary experience for a run in 2016 or 2020, the point in time where he might have the necessary knowledge needed the be CEO of the USA

CHANGE without substantive policies = Jimmy Carter '76

Another Obama control freak trying to divert attention from the truth. Obama was "picked up" by Rezko as he left Harvard. Obama got in Harvard because of a Malcom X attorney sponsoring him to get in.

Rezko has been Obama's political Godfather for all the years Obama campaigned for Illinois senator and U.S. Senator. Even Michelle Robinson (Obama) was involved with Rezko. Michelle worked in Mayor Daley's corrupt Chicago Way office and brought Barack into the fold in 1991.

Barack Obama wrote letters on his Illinois Senate letterhead that netted fourteen million dollars to Rezko from taxpayer monies for low income housing.

Barak Obama also sat in on business meetings with Rezko to influence potential investors.

Barack Obama also provided "drop in service" for Rezko when foreign investors came to Chicago, including Nadhmi Auchi, who was Saddam Hussein's closes ally in Iraq. Obama also helped Auchi got into the country, somehow, when he was banned from coming here.

You can say all you want that Obama is innocent, but he isn't. He has very problematic anti-American relationships, and domestic relationships, and corrupt Chicago Way political relationships.

You can stay in denial all you want, but the truth will come along anytime now. gw.

Obama got $300,000 discount on his house from Tony Rezko.

Now we learned that his surrogate Chris Dodd also got sweet heart deal on his mortgage from the king of sub prime lender - Country Wide.

What a phony change we can believe in!

Obama is the best choice for President. He has integrity, character, right age, and experience as a lawyer, organizer, State Senator, and US Senator. Both he and his wife are well educated. He has the credentials that it takes to make a good President. McCain is too old and his mind is not keen and alert. Obama has a keen and alert mind. Who wants someone almost senile to be President. McCain needs to be relaxing and enjoying retirement in his old age rather than stressing his mind out over performing Presidential duties.

All the campaign promises from Obama is only on paper. He will have very limited options if he got elected. Iran nuclear scientists will obtain enough nuclear material for a bomb before 2009. If they successfully test a bomb, all bets are off the table for the US and Iran. The Israelis are considering bombing the Iranian nuclear facilities alone before all this happens, if the US cannot get the problem resolved before too late. It is not a matter of if this will happen, it is when. In Jan. 2009, the new president will be facing an Iran determined to retaliate against Israel and the US. The only thing Obama can do is either to negotiate a term to surrender to the Iranians, or see half the world's energy supply been cutoff.

Mr. W. vs the Law

Sir,

War Is Law Enforcement.

You investigate and identify the correct criminal suspect (or nation). You capture or kill, interogate, and punish or release the suspect/nation.

We pursued and captured the wrong suspect/nation. We incorrectly judged and killed him and we have no idea where the actual criminal is at this point.

Those are the facts Mr. W.

Rightwingers preach fear, fear, fear, as a diversion, so that they can continue to rob the country blind. And I mean that "rob" literally.

McCain promised a civil campaign. So much for already abandoning one promise to the people in our country.

What happened to the GOP, which long ago stood for human rights and more recently for respect for the Constitution and fiscal responsibility? Most Republicans have abandoned all three since the Reagan era, if not earlier.

In a way one may feel sorry for McCain and the Republicans. With such very low approval ratings for Bush, the unpopular war in Iraq, high inflation, tens of millions of people without health care insurance, they know their only chance to keep the White House and minimize losses in Congress is to pursue massive fearmongering, smear tactics and avoiding discussing domestic issues.

The only question is will the Republicans fool enough voters again? Given the sea change in the approval ratings of Bush compared to four years ago, their perverse strategy should fail.

aBigSAM asked:
"Why did McCain attack Obama for saying he'd talk to Hamas when McCain said it himself a year ago, and today Israel announced that it reached a truce agreement with Hamas via "talks?

Why did McCain attack Obama for his willingness to talk to Syria? Just last week, Israel announced its plans to engage Syria in talks and to open an embassy there? It talking to Syria is such a bad idea for the US, why is it a good idea for Israel?"

You wanted a republican TROLL to answer, I lean to the right, so I'll give it a shot.
The debate was over PRESIDENTIAL LEVEL talks with Hamas, which McCain opposes despite a quote which was taken out of context from a CNN interview. Obama supports dignifying a terrorist organization with a meeting with the leader of the free world, the most powerful person on the face of the earth. This automatically gives credibility to the leader and allows for an additional recruitment tool. Amidst the prospects of a possible truce between Israel and Hamas, why would Obama allow Hamas to feel justified in their cause by legitimizing them(find me where PM Olmert has met with the leader of Hamas, Israel does not dignify that terrorist organization with a meeting with their leader). McCain does not oppose talking or communicating, if you will, with Syria or Iran. There are diplomatic communications that occur constantly between Hamas, Israel, the US, Syria, Iran, Iraq (Hussein era) and every other country in the world. Whether you want to believe that or not, there are always diplomatic communications occurrig between parties in almost every conflict/situation, that's what ambassadors are for. What is being debated is PRESIDENTIAL LEVEL talks with these countries/groups, that is the issue that we need to stick to and the issue that Obama is flat wrong about. Its not "floated" that republicans are better at national security, a strong national defense and free market have always been a priority of conservatism, while government programs and spending have always been priorities of liberalism. Which would you trust with a dangerous would and a slowing economy? You ask those question with such a self-imposed moral authority that assumes that you know everything and we're a bunch of idiots.Read up a little more and smell your own farts a little less, smug prick

Posted by: ATLCT | June 17, 2008 7:57 PM

Posted by: James | June 17, 2008 7:54 PM

I do agree with Obama that for the most part the American Legal System could handle most of the terrorism cases and that the laws we've enacted or ignored has been to our detriment. We've lost moral ground because of the way the Bush Administration acted. I really think McCain is stuck with policies that he doesn't even agree with. He knows that legal torture in the US means legal torture of Americans in other states. I'd hope that both these candidates would think more about making terrorism laws that don't undermine the value of American Government.

The big take away from this exchange is the fact that McCain has NeoCons from PNAC like Randy Scheunemann playing an active role in his campaign.

As a life-long Republican, I think McCain would be well-advised to jettison extremists like Sheunemann, Kristol, and Kagan from his advisory council and get some realists in place. Otherwise I might just have to hold my nose and vote for Obama this election cycle.

The last thing we need are 8 more years of foreign policy disasters and when it comes to foreign policy disasters people like Sheunemann are part of the problem. If McCain wants to get some distance from Bush he would be well-advised to keep distance from Bush's most ideological foreign policy advisers.

Certainly I am republican...but you say I am making up facts...name one. Watch the video...he says States.

I'm not making up anything. You saying that is you trying to make people think I am lying...clearly based on the video I am not.

Look, I am not real happy about McCain...I certainly don't like Bush...I for one am FOR people having opportunity, FOR people having accountability for their own actions, and strongly AGAINST corruption. Obama stinks of corruption, and that's why I don't like him. Not saying McCain is perfect...just saying he has more of a record to prove who he is.

One question zephyr99...did you watch the video? Obama clearly says 57 states. This is not an argument...it' there for the world to see.

Again, how many of you out there could ever possilbly image making that kind of mistake? It's like saying "I'm running for President of Canada"...it just wouldn't happen.

The Dem Congress IS doing its job. It's keeping Bush at a stalemate. I'm figuring thats why you are so red in the face with your rants. Thats about all we can hope for given there is no supermajorty in the Senate nothing can happen as long as Bush holds veto power.

You need to pay attention and quit throwing out random things you claim are 'facts'

Posted by: John, Seattle WA | June 17, 2008 7:20 PM

Look, one thing I don't know for certain is that what exactly the ties are between Rezko and Obama other than it looks pretty suspicious.

One thing I do know is that the reason I do not like Obama has nothing to do with race. Maybe other people are racist (including the black people that like him) but I for one could care less about his color, and everything about who he is, what he says or doesn't say he'll do and whether or not I think he's honest.

I personally think that if everything else were the same, I would rather vote for the black man. The only good thing about Barack being elected is that people can't play the race card as much. I know there's racism in this country, but I also know a lot of that aren't racist are called racist - i.e. the Republican party.

The Republicans have failed miserably in the misadventure in Iraq and in efforts to apprehend Osama bin Laden. What else is there to say on the subject? It's time for a change.

Let's face it, John McCain is old and washed up. What is he going to do for four years in the white house but just hold a title called president. He has no new ideas of his own. He's running the same type of campaign that Bush ran against him in 2000. He is the biggest flip flopper I've even seen in politics. COME ON PEOPLE..WAKE UP! I really believe that the people against Obama are against him because he's black and they just can't stand the idea of a black or half black man as president.

In response to the charge earlier regarding Republican interest in fighting for the "mantle" of George Bush:
You certainly must be joking, right? Your assertions are not only stunningly inaccurate... they are completely and utterly misleading and false. Furthermore, it is astounding to read most of the comments pertaining to this well written article. The majority of you here have completely missed the point. The enemy has been emboldened by successfully turning our laws and judicial system to their favor, not ours. Critical evidence under seal prevented our intelligence community to do it's job and all you can talk about is the glory of "progressives" and Michael Moore? What really scares me is that it appears that the majority of you actually believe what you have written. You have written only what you have heard... not what you have concluded after much critical thought.

Be advised that you are the laughing stock of those who seek to bring this nation to it's knees and destroy all that you have known... all that you have loved, or tried to love. Your charge of conspiracy by your government, against you, is baseless and displays a level of ignorance and folly displayed only by those who follow the demogogue. You are, at best, progressive Myrmidons being lead to the slaughter.

"One thought...what if John McCain made Hillary his VP choice? I don't like Hillary but I think McCain president over Obama makes up for the Hillary VP...what say you?"

I say you're an idiot. No one in this country wants another four years of criminal Bush policies, which of course John "Butt Kisser" McCain would follow to a fault.

John McCain is the candidate the Repubs shoved forward as the designated loser, just like Mondale was to Reagan in '84.

Obama is the man. Time you thought of your country, instead of anti-Constitutional corporate fascists like Bush and McCain. They're an embarrassment to this nation's entire history.

Posted by: SteveCO | June 17, 2008 7:02 PM

McCain showed by numerous comments before and during the invasion of Iraq that he was naive and delusional. He acknowledges he knows nothing about economics.

Elect McCain president and there will be another four to eight years of essentially Bush-Cheney policies, neglect of domestic issues, more Americans without health care coverage, the rich getting richer, the middle and working classes struggling with high inflation, the war in Iraq going on and on. With his recent contempt for the Supreme Court decision. McCain also does not seem to offer any changes in the Bush policies of trampling on civil and constitutional liberties.

Posted by: Independent | June 17, 2008 6:59 PM

Barack Obama..."We have been to 57 states and have a few more to go to..." That's embarrassing no matter how you look at it. I love that as he goes on he catches himself on how many more states he has to visit, but doesn't catch the fact that the last time I counted, we have 50 states.

People will defend him and say it was a slip of the tongue, but can you really imagine there ever being a time where you would say, even by mistake, that there were 57 states?

Keep talking about change....blah, blah, blah. People also said that a democratic congress would change things too. Is that why their approval rating is even lower than the presidents...now that's embarressing. I for one am not a big George W fan - in fact I'm happy he's almost done...but I sure hope Obama is not elected...our gas prices will never go down. He sai himself that he's not disappointed about the cost of gas, just how quickly they rose.

Please don't say I'm trying to smear him...I'm just using his own words. Between his own words and his associations...we'd be fools to elect him.

One thought...what if John McCain made Hillary his VP choice? I don't like Hillary but I think McCain president over Obama makes up for the Hillary VP...what say you?

"But this is who Obama is. He is the professorial candidate. And that is exactly where John McCain wants him to be."

You sound like ex-Confederates, whining for the Lost Cause and hoping like Jeff Davis to make an impossible comeback.

McCain is toast. Every day he says something increasingly stupid and irritating about terrorism or Iraq specifically.

If I were a Republican, I'd be crying baby tears right now, because McCain doesn't have a snowball's chance in Hell to win the fall election.

People are tired of war and corporate criminals. That's all Bush, Cheney and *McCain* are about. Corporate fascism. Period.

Obama will win in a landslide.

I'd like to thank McCain for his courageous announcement that he intends to carry on the Bush policy of disregarding outdated principles like due process, the presumption of innocence and habeus corpus. We, the people, much prefer to rely on you, the government, to decide for us who is a terrorist and use more modern methods, like tortured confessions and indefinite jail without trial, to protect America's core values.

Posted by: taxpyer | June 17, 2008 6:51 PM

Half of this article is about Richard Clarke, who has been angling for a Democratic appointment since everyone realized he really F'd up, (along with many others).. notice how quickly he pointed out "it wasn't me ...it was Bush.. and Clinton".

The other problem is that Obama pointed out that we should have pursued the terrorists in the same fashion we did after the first WTC bombing, and how did that work out for us? yes we have a small group of those responsible in jail...although bin Laden was involved in that as well. But we were hit 6 times after that..right?
and outside of Iraq and Afghanistan we haven't been hit a single time since 9/11. Which policy is working? Not perfect.. but working

Did you bother to read Citizenwells article or just throw your "na, na, na," out there the same way Obama does when he doesn't know what he is talking about, or if he knows he is wrong. He doesn't allow reporters to have follow up questions, and that is why - Obama is a pathological liar that "Na, na, na's" his way out of his past bad relationships, bad judgements. gw.

Posted by: Iowatreasures | June 17, 2008 6:40 PM

Someone pointed to Obama's article in the WSJ today and said he is thorough.. well i got about 5 paragraphs in, and gave up. I had hoped you were right and the article would make sense, and be a good economic policy/plan...but after a few paragraphs, it is 100% obvious that Obama has NO idea what he is talking about in regards to economics, and is just pandering to get votes. Let me break it down by the quotes from the article.

1. "Globalization and technology and automation all weaken the position of workers," he said

- Seriously? Yeah it weakens the position of unskilled workers in jobs that have been out of date since the early 80s. I'm sorry, but an economy can't grow if we refuse to accept globalization, technology, and automation.

2. "He didn't say how deeply he would cut the rate, but said it could be trimmed in return for reducing corporate tax breaks, simplifying the tax system. With existing loopholes, he said, "How much you pay in taxes as a corporation a lot of times is going to depend on how good your lobbyist is." With "a level playing field," he said, the rates could be reduced."

- I didn't know lobbyists got you out of paying taxes.. i thought that is what you paid good money to Accountants and lawyers for. Lobbyists try to get laws passed in your favor.. i guess that could mean tax laws.. but the lobbyists aren't really out there for that. Corporate tax laws are pretty much lobbied by the corporations and voters. And now he wants to lower taxes on corporations, but raise them on individuals who make more than 250k a year? so all the small business owners will be hit hard, and the BIG businesses will go on .. i guess its better than raising taxes for all.

3. "While Sen. McCain has argued that tax cuts -- particularly on business -- spur growth, Sen. Obama rejected that as flawed economics. "I've seen no evidence that...would actually boost the economic growth and productivity," he said."

- Thats great that he hasn't seen that evidence, but every economist in the world has.. yes there are more factors that contribute to positive economic growth, and cutting the deficit is one of them, but raising taxes only slows economic growth, its cutting domestic and international spending, and a reduction in dependance on foreign imports that will help the most.

Did you really read the article and in-between the lines? Because they said that like Clinton Obama is promising economic policy that will be shelved as soon as he hits the white house. They finished up with a correlation to "Carter's Second term" wow Carter was really great with the economy, or can you not recall the last time people sat in line for gas?

So, the Republican Juggernaut might want
to give it's Prime Presidential Candidate,
Senator John Mccain more than just a Tuneup. How about an overhaul, beginning with greasing his already sticking transmission, with some serious grease.
As the old FDR mantra goes:"Only Thing We
Have to Fear is Fear Itself". That includes the ignorant masses who continue to believe that not only George W. Bush is our president, but also that Senator John McCain is a man of principle. Most of the
fearmongering isn't radiating from the
Democratic/Obama Camp, but from a corrupt
few who have over the last eight years brought our country almost to its knees.

Posted by: Jet-Man | June 17, 2008 6:34 PM

Obama released 3700 Obama control freaks onto the internet to fight off "smears." Where was Obama when his camp was smearing our revered Clintons of being racists?

You Obama control freaks call everything anyone says about Obama as "racist," or "fear mongering," or "distractions (Rev. Wright)" etc.

Well, we aren't buying the Obama corrupt Chicago Way M.O. of eliminating the playing field so he can run unopposed as he did in Chicago.

So far, he has gotten away with that with Hillary, also, but we still have a little time left before the Convention to make people see what they are getting into if they make Obama the nominee of the Democratic Party.

I am not for McCain, so don't label me as a republican. I am a free thinking American who worries about an Obama presidency.

I don't want to see an angry (giving the finger to Hillary and to reporters and also I saw an old photo of Obama doing that to Michelle - they were both angry as H**l. But the Obama's are angry, they are immature, they are inexperienced and they are trouble - with all their anti-American, domestic terrorist, corrupt Chicago Way alliances and friendships - that goes for Michelle, also.

Michelle worked in the corrupt Mayor Daley office where they dished out millions of dollars to crooks like Antoin Rezko. Michelle brought Barack into the Daley fold in 1991. She married Barack in the radical, separatist church, The Trinity in 1992. Michelle's father was Daley's precinct captain. "Birds of a feather . . ." gw.

I think Obama is on the right track.

Old McPops is a little lost as his 'new' advice seems to contradict his old. Does he even know what his handlers are doing with him, or is this just a case of him being pushed around uncomprehending? Its what you see in many old age homes? He is sprouting more and more Bushism's and does not connect the dots of a failed and very unpopular Pres and his own campaign.

Obama could almost do anything and it would be better than the Bush failures and his lowest ever approval ratings. Talking to Iran etc. may work. It hasn't been tried by Bush and diplomacy is as old as politics. For Bush it would be radical and maybe out of his capacity. For Obama is would probably mean success.

Posted by: Joe | June 17, 2008 6:31 PM

Obama will not win McCain's game.

John McCain is calling Obama naive and soft on terrorism. He says Obama's proposals are dangerous. This is all typical Republican tactic--simple, direct attacks that take no intelligence to understand and which evoke strong negative emotions.

And Obama is responding with his academic team: John Kerry and Richard Clarke. Certainly they will do a superb job of explaining in detail exactly what Obama will do as President. Question is: who will listen? Obama already has the academic vote. He doesn't need to impress that crowd.

In fact, it'll take the average voter about 5 seconds into a Kerry or a Clarke dissertation speech, and ole' beer-belly Joe's eyes'll turn blank. The guy you want to answer McCain should be something of a James Carville clone. Carville knows how to simplify matters; he'll stick a knife into WHERE it matters.

But this is who Obama is. He is the professorial candidate. And that is exactly where John McCain wants him to be.

G8tr, Obama's name was mentioned, often, in the Rezko trial. See Citizenwells report of June 15, 2008 below:

While the Sinclair allegations have always been a serious matter
and part of the puzzle picture of Obama, I have always maintained
that the Sinclair story did not happen in a vacuum and fits well
within the context of Obama's life and associations.Remember Stuart
Levine, a close associate of Rezko, admitted to a long time drug
problem and hosting regular drug parties with male friends.

Another serious and troubling aspect of Obama's associations was
revealed in the Tony Rezko trial. Rezko was convicted of 16 of 24
counts of corruption. Obama and Rezko have a long and close
association. Obama and Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich were
mentioned frequently during the Rezko trial. Blagojevich was
mentioned more and may be the next person indicted as well as
being impeached. Obama endorsed Blagojevich.

Consider the following articles from the Chicago Tribune. If you
are an Obama supporter, this is a long established newspaper
that has been covering the rezko trial, Obama, Blagojevich
and the next phase of government indictments, in their move to bring
to justice, the players in Illinois corruption.

Rezko trial prelude to more indictments:
"The Justice Department's prosecution of Antoin "Tony" Rezko was always about prelude, never about climax.

Yet, after 7+ years of a Republican administration, we find ourselves with a huge deficit in the trillions of dollars, our economy is in the tank, we have not seen the capture of Osama Bin Laden, we are less safe thanks to a bungled war in Iraq, and our standing in the world is severely compromised thanks to Bush's inept cowboy diplomacy.

Our country does NOT need more typical GOP rhetoric that McCain is offering. We need C-H-A-N-G-E.

But that's beside the point; Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner... so that kinda makes your quote irrelevant.

Back to the issue. The biggest point that is made about the Iraq war is the lack of knowledge and experience in the Bush White House. I agree with this. Bush never served in the "real" military. Neither did his vice president.

The focus of our efforts have to be where Bin Laden is which is Afghanistan not Iraq. When you go for Bin Laden you are going to be up against al-Qaeda which may mean attacking Pakistan. If you focus on Iraq how in the world do you expect to get Bin Laden.

How you can attack Obama for the stupidity of Bush escapes me. What we need is leadership that focuses on real problems not Iraq which was conjured up by Bush/Cheney/McCain. al-Quaeda was never the object of Bush when he attacked Iraq for they were not there but in Afghanistan.

This debate seems to have highlighted some legitimate differences between the candidates rather than just partisan ones. It's always refreshing when that happens. I wonder which candidate will synergize first.

McCain had the gall to accuse Obama of having a "9-10 mentality" and the Republicans like to float the idea that somehow they're better at fighting terrorism and national security.

My question for McCain AND the Republicans is, if you're so good at fighting terrorism, then why in the hell was one of Bush's first acts as President the firing of Richard Clarke and the disbanding of the Terrorism Task Force that Bill Clinton had formed?

If the Republicans are so great at fighting terrorism, why did George W. Bush fail to recognize the significance of the NIE Report entitled "al Quada is a serious threat to the US" which contained information that operatives in the US were training to fly jet liners?

Why did McCain attack Obama for saying he'd talk to Hamas when McCain said it himself a year ago, and today Israel announced that it reached a truce agreement with Hamas via "talks?"

Why did McCain attack Obama for his willingness to talk to Syria? Just last week, Israel announced its plans to engage Syria in talks and to open an embassy there? It talking to Syria is such a bad idea for the US, why is it a good idea for Israel?

Why did McCain attack Obama for his willingness to talk to Iran's leaders when our ally in the region, Iraq, has just met with them to conclude some deals? So a country that we're supposedly trying to protect is engaging in talks that we're excluding ourselves from? What sense does THAT make?

Obama has already been asking why we went to Iraq before finishing off bin Laden in Afghanistan, so I won't ask it here.

Go ahead you GOP trolls attacking Obama here. Answer THESE questions, ok?

there have been many attacks by terrorists since 9/11, including our embassies, most recently the american embassy in Yemen. Of course the slogan "fight them in iraq so you don't have to fight them over here" sounds simplistic, therefor available for comprehension to the rush limbaugh mind, but in fact america and our allies have suffered horribly since 9/11 - Madrid and London were only the biggest - are those countries not our allies? or is it ok in the minds on republicans to kill the brits and the spaniards? This crap that we haven't suffered an attack since 9/11 has got to stop. The republican policies have caused an INCREASE in terrorism. thank you very much!

Full of self interest, we invaded Iraq and opened up a civil war. Lots of others folks, full of self interest, have now piled on.

It's a bloody, immoral mess, and we Americans are responsible--like it or not.

Could someone prove me wrong?

Posted by: Kate | June 17, 2008 5:58 PM

Bottom line, McCain is the Senate's most dedicated supporter of the Bush foreign policy. (He only disagreed with the Pentagon's military strategy, not the policy of going into Iraq.) That policy has been one colossal blunder after another. It has put the U.S. into its lowest point of influence in the world than at any time in the last half century. McCain promises to continue to follow that policy. I have yet to hear him describe one major change he would make in U.S. foreign policy.

When Obama is President, will peace suddenly rule the planet? No, but he can't do worse than Bush has done in the past or McCain promises to do in the future.

Posted by: bgjd1979 | June 17, 2008 5:58 PM

How can anyone think that Obama is "different". Obama's friend who is now going to jail buys the lot next to his to make the sale possible...later his "friend" sells Obama a small portion of that lot making the lot un-developeable and unsellable. Obama later helps his "friend" get government contracts for low-income housing. How can anyone think that Obamas hands are clean? His friend is now going to jail...I wonder if Obama should be as well.

Posted by: James | June 17, 2008 5:57 PM

Why all the pandering
While he was a senator in a Dem Congress they allowed the housing/mortgage to run amuck
The Dems promised change two years ago what has changed inflation thru the roof, unstable markets, can you say "foreclosure", yeah they have been promising change change change since like for ever the only thing they change is their social agendas.
The Dem's had a chance pre 9-11 to take our Osama Bin Laden and choose to change how we deal with Terrorists and let him roam free and make threats to American Soil.
The Dem's fought wars against Muslim extremist in the Balkan's lest you forget THEIR WARS
As Saddam Hussein Rattled his saber, and compliment Osama for his great work against the infidels, the Dems ignored the pleas of millions of Iraqis and Kurds who wished for Freedom of Oppression.
Why Does Barrack Huessien Obama pander to the left while stumping for votes, but when he is alone with the Elite of his party attacks them viciously.

Why do Dem's get disgusted when Republicans use their tactics, all the while using theirs, The Dems refusal to let Florida and Michigan voters have the freedom of for the people by the people, for that matter their little "Super Delegates" should scare anyone who is just has just one little vote. Just because their Party leaders say the rules are the rules, does that make it right. I know if Howard dean trampled all over my constitutional right to vote, I would not take it lightly and rally behind his candidate. If they could accomplish such a travesty during the Primary what would happen if they had 2/3 of congress and the white house.
I may not be old but the Democrats at every election promise change, yet they are the ones who only point the problems right around election time.

So if McCain is another Bush is Barack Hussein Obama another Clinton or another Carter? Just because Barack Hussein Obama can attack our current commander in Chief and say McCain's name after he says Bush A. does not make it true. B. is an old ploy if there ever was one. (Should I say Osama's plan for our American values is X not another Osama/Obama tactic that is not going to work.
Barack Hussein Obama has resorted to name calling MCSAME.
What nick name should the republicans come up with for a man who is ashamed of his middle name, his pastor, his church, and his wife is not proud of her country?
Since Barack Huessien Obama walked away from his religion, because of a little bad press, what bad press would cause him to walk away from other basic American Values?

Posted by: J Newcomb | June 17, 2008 5:56 PM

Finally we have someone who wants to bring reason and national security issue to the mid east discussion. Our enemy lies in Afghanistan and the Pakistan border to the east. This obsession with Iraq comes from an unwillingness to back down after a series of stupid decisions were made in Iraq. Why leave the Iraq situation in the hands of those who made the mistakes. McCain is in no hurry to extricate us from there even though al-Qaeda is concentrated in Afghanistan and environs.

John McCain offers more of the same Bush failures of policy and judgement. Obama is dynamic and willing to be aggressive (in Pakistan border area) but not so where our national interest does not lie (Iraq).

Ok...

I just read that Megabam (Obama) claims the GOP has failed America and that's why Osama Bin Laden is still free!

That's why since 9/11/2001 we have had ZERO ATTACKS on the U.S.

As far as not capturing Bin Laden, maybe Megabam (Obama) in all of his experience in wisdom can enlighten us on how to capture him. Does he have information on the capture of Bin Laden?!?!?! He had better start cooperating with us and tell us what he knows to bring the U.S.A.'s #1 enemy to capture!

Wow, pretty vile comment considering the "unity" that is supposed to be commencing within the democratic party. Hillary supporters, you can see that Obama's supporters don't care about your opinion on this election, just about their "golden boy" and "change we can believe in, but not really knowing what that change means, but Obama says it and he can do no wrong, so we'll take his word for it" The McCain camp would love this "very insignificant and tiny ball of rejected and displaced angry Hillary supporters" that number in the millions. Honestly, most would probably identify with McCain if they knew him beyond the misrepresentations on the internet and media. Give McCain a look on the "real" issues before you jump on the Obama bandwagon. Somebody has to at least question the substance of his policies before this country "anoints him king".

Is there anybody that has violated our Constitution more than the Republicans? The Democrats in the last 6 months have refused the right to vote people in Michigan, and Florida their excuse? We set up RULES.

Is there anybody who is gladder to stick our children with the bill for our pre-lost "war on terror" than McSame? The Clinton's wars were great for the economy, and great for creating beds of terrorism, playacting enemy does real well ask the French pre WWII.

Is there a stupider, war-losing, Islamophobic, liar than Bush?

Maybe a little education yourself will help "Stupider" lets put this into perspective for you US losses in Iraq 4000+ Islamic Extremist 200K+ Maybe you could tell me how many US solders lost their life under Clintons terms in Office? How many American lives were lost during the Battle of the Bulge Approx 81,000 So KLEM is GW winning yes, would the Dems surrender and accept defeat yes. which is the Dumbest plan, which plan would screw up our national security?

Why is it when the country more than likely vote for a Democrat did they have to find the most leftwing liberals to represent themselves, and yet out of the other side of their mouth they talk about bringing America together? While the Republicans voted in a candidate that has a proven record of not being an extremist.

Where was the Obama love bump after he "won" the nomination? The guy is a fraud and smell of a fraud can't be hidden with pretty speeches.

McCain finished in the bottom five of his Naval Academy graduating class. Obama specialized in international relations in college. McCain wore the uniform to his credit, Obama was never required to.
Some of the best Commanders In Chief in U.S. history have been non-military men. Let's see Obama's proposed cabinet and McCains, and compare the two. Finally, what kind of role would Cheney (Halliburton) and Rove have in a McCain administration?

Posted by: Bob | June 17, 2008 5:46 PM

Clarke knows all.... And Bush/Rice refused to listen!!!

Posted by: Andy | June 17, 2008 5:44 PM

Senile McCain's age is showing more and more these days. He's incoherent half of the time and outright wrong the rest of time.

Posted by: Senile McCain | June 17, 2008 5:44 PM

"Notably, Clarke did appear at one point to back up a key Republican talking point, that Iraq is now the key front on terrorism. Democrats have tried to argue in recent years that many of those battling and killing Americans in Iraq are homegrown insurgents, not Al-Qaeda warriors. But Clarke said that Al-Qaeda had not attacked on American soil since Sept. 11 because it had instead decided that it was easier to attack America in Iraq: "They've killed 4,000 and wounded 25,000," he said, contradicting the Democratic case that many if not most casualties have been inflicted by non-Al-Qaeda Iraqis.""

Alec,

Tens or hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq, and you want us to think that Clarke's attribution of 4,000 dead to AQI contradicts Democratic claims that most casualties came from other sources? Have you forgotten how many of the casualties of Baghdad came from ethnic/sectarian cleansing, for example?

Is Iraq the key front on terrorism? It depends on how you define the battle. Let's make the common mistake of assuming the goal is to kill terrorists. Yes, after the Republican invasion created fertile territory for terrorist inflitration, most terrorist casualties came in Iraq. But, the recent successes have come from Iraqi militias more than US forces. That is definitely not a Republican talking point. And, again taking the mistaken metric of kills, Afghanistan is now more central to the struggle than Iraq.

But real success in the struggle against terror is pre-emption - by stopping the recruitment of people to the terrorist cause in the first place. And the key front in this struggle is the US political arena, where the two presidential candidates offer two different worldviews - domination versus cooperation. Domination games lead to blow-back. I don't want to put this simplistically, but lacking time for an extended essay, domination games bear a lot of the responsibility for the situation we find ourselves in.

bin Laden understands domination games. He knows how to play US domination desires to suck us into situations where he can slowly bleed and weaken us. McCain has the perfect mentality for bin Laden's purposes. I don't know what Obama can accomplish, but he could hardly do worse than McCain.

Posted by: j2hess | June 17, 2008 5:42 PM

Pleeze, pleeze, save us from the Republican "successes" over the past 7.5 years! The U.S. is in a horrible mess and the Republicans can't stop impeding progress.

PRESIDENT OBAMA PREDICTED TO HEAL AMERICA AND THE WORLD

The match-up between John McCain and Barack Obama is close in nationwide surveys in the United States, but around the world it's no contest: Obama prevails.

A survey of 24 nations taken by the Pew Global Attitudes Project finds high levels of interest in the U.S. presidential election and broad optimism that American foreign policy "will change for the better" after the inauguration of a new president next year.

In 21 of the 23 foreign countries, those polled express more faith in Obama than in McCain to "do the right thing regarding world affairs." In the other two nations, Pakistan and Jordan, neither inspires much confidence.

"Obama obviously has an appeal that has crossed the waters," says Andrew Kohut, who directs the Pew project. "Some of it may have to do with his being associated with opposition to the war in Iraq, which is consistent with views of people around the world. Some of it may have to do with his charismatic qualities and the fact that he's different than the typical American presidential candidate."

Among the findings:

•Interest is high. Japanese are even more likely than Americans to say they are following the election closely. At least of half of those surveyed in Germany, Australia, Jordan and Britain say they are paying attention. In most of the nations surveyed, a third or more are tuning in.

•Optimism about a new president is broad. About two-thirds of those surveyed in France, Spain, Germany, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania predict U.S. foreign policy will improve after the inauguration. In 20 of 24 nations, more say U.S. foreign policy will change for the better than for the worse.

•Obama is heavily favored. In 21 of 23 countries, more people have faith in the Illinois senator than in McCain to "do the right thing" in foreign affairs. The two contenders were essentially tied in the United States and Jordan.

In most countries, Obama is also more trusted than President Bush. The contrast was particular steep in Europe, where Bush has been making his farewell presidential tour this week. In France, where he visits Friday, 13% say they have "a lot" or some confidence in Bush to do the right thing. Six times as many, 84%, say that of Obama.

Posted by: The World Loves Obama | June 17, 2008 5:32 PM

Obama will be our next President.

McCain is weak and disoriented. He really has no comprehension of the complexities of international affairs.

Graduating 5th from the BOTTOM of his class at the Naval Academy (894 of 899) -- flimflaming his way through flight training --- crashing 4 airplanes before being shot down and spending 5 years in the Hanoi Hilton -- tells us that he is tough - but not smart. He is not smart. He's dumb.

Obama is a 47 year-old Constitutional Law professor who graduated in the top 1% of his Harvard Law School class. He pays attention. He learns quickly. He asks questions and listens to the answers -- he has been endorsed by folks like Dodd, Biden, Nunn and other senior foreign policy experts.

Furthermore, after nearly 2 YEARS of digging and searching through his past the opposition research trolls have nothing except:

He went to a church whose preacher got more and more radical until Obama moved on. People change over time -- influence wains.

He lived in a Chicago neighborhood in which a 1960's radical also lives - the guy is NOW a full tenured professor. Past sins not Obama's problem.

One of the thousands of syncophants who try to buy their way into positions of influence -- got caught and will go to jail.
No hint of any wrongdoing involving Obama.

That's it.

All the rest is even less consequential -- or outright lies.

Two years of digging and that's it.

Obama is clean and ready to serve. And, he was against the stupid war in Iraq -- from the start -- BUT is a hawk on killing Bin Laden.

Time for new blood and new direction.

McCain is crushed in November by the weight of the Bush legacy and his own mediocre skills.

And people are wanting us to be defeated so badly that they won't print the good news coming out of Iraq. Do you know why they won't report it. Because you don't require them to. Posted by: Andy | June 17, 2008 5:24 PM

Naive:

"And I believe that the success will be fairly easy" and "There's no doubt in my mind that... we will be welcomed as liberators." [John McCain 3/24/03]

"I think we could go in with much smaller numbers than we had to do in the past... I don't believe it's going to be nearly the size and scope that it was in 1991." [John McCain 9/15/02]

Delusional:

"There's not a history of clashes that are violent between Sunnis and Shias. So I think they can probably get along." [John McCain 4/23/03]

In fact, John McCain was either delusional or outright lied on national tv when he announced after his famous Baghdad market trip that he did not wear body armor and that Patreaus rode around with no protective armor on his vehicle.

Experience is of no use unless you learn from it.

He claims that the Republicans play the fear card but he plays it often and without any regard for the truth. Just today he blamed the GOP for not catching Osama. As if John Kerry would have done a better job tracking down anything other than a billionaire widow.

Obama hood-winked America (including me) into voting for him during the primaries, but I just have to believe that sooner or later, people are going to wake up and realize that this guy just the same old, same old empty suit (i.e., tax and spend liberal, blame America first shill, etc.).

I voted for Obama in the primary, but his comments over the last couple of days have made it clear to me that when it comes to terrorism, he just does not get it.

There are others on the left that think both Obama and McCain are nothing more than jingoistic flag-wavers for the corporate controlled media (like the WaPo).

Progressives like Noam Chomsky and Molly Ivins have been telling us about the American military war machine for years. What is really cool about Noam Chomsky is that he questions authority and doesn't want to accept the propaganda about what really happened on 9/11. The Bush illegal war in Iraq was only possible if the people believed that 9/11 was the result of 19 hijackers and jet airplanes.

There are many really cool progressive Web sites that prove it was more than likely squib charges that brought down the WTC, and the use of holograms convinced many (but not us really cool progressives) that it was jet airplanes being flown into the building.

Noam Chomsky and Michael Moore won't accept that propaganda, and other really cool progressives like me and Sean Penn and Randi Rhodes are all onto the lies of the Bush regime. Thank goodness there is the Internet, that allows for us angry, bitter leftists to bypass the corporate controlled media to find the truth.

JOHN W. MCBUSH is the reason I'm AGAINST CLONING!

Look at the real issues, people. Obama has a far superior plan for:
Affordable Health Care
Resolving the MESS in Iraq
Keeping America Safe
Fixing the Economy
Giving Tax Cuts to the Middle Class (finally!)

McSame has no plan, or has simply copied and pasted the failed Bush/Cheney plan.
Obama in a landslide.

Whoever said Obama is the one with all the new ideas for change...I've yet to hear them? He is just a puppet for the Democratic party saying whatever he needs to say to try and convince people he's the best...I don't blame him for it...it's what politicians do. But whoever thinks he's different than anyone else, I've got some property to sell you.

Senator John McCain is to his Republican

All of you Obama Haters, shut the f*&ck up!!! Go some darn where and take care of your pathetic a$$e$. It's dumb a$$e$ like you fools who have elected 8 years of GWB aka Weapons of Mass Destruction! You hated gays and lesbians, so your pathetic behinds were afraid that gay marriage would be legal and instead of using some good ol' fashion common darn sense and realizing that America faced a heck of a lot more important issues than same sex marriage. So you went into the voting places with your hateful and judging attitudes and voted that retard back into the White House for another four years! So now that we have a chance to get our acts together, you find some more b.s. to complain about...sad thing is that most of the idiots who vote blindly and retardedly are the idiots that suffer from putting this d$ckheads into office!! Good for you...and for that very insignificant and tiny ball of rejected and displaced angry Hillary supporters...you all sound like jacka$$e$....do yourself a favor and jump in a ditch somewhere because you are ever so embarrassing and disgusting...Shame on you!

Well except for the fact that Obama has already achieved more than you, or anyone you know, ever will.

When it comes to 911, you have two basic types of Americans:

1. Those given to fear, paranoia, and ignorance. They couldn't wait to swarm into Iraq without a plan. They are scared of Muslims because they have no knowledge whatsoever of the Middle East and they have no desire to learn. Deep down, I suspect they are the biggest cowards of them all. They'll vote McCain because he shares their delusions.

2. Those who've taken the time to try and understand the history of the Middle East region, the relationships between the various factions, and what it all means for America. These are the folks who are able to ratchet up the thinking a little bit and therefore they are able to form an opinion on their own. They understand how an illegal occupation abroad and the removal of civil liberties at home will eventually lead to the collapse of America as they know it. They'll vote Obama because they understand what a disaster allowing people like McCain to further erode the country will be.

For myself, I will never support or vote for Obama. But he wins this round.

Obama was a state senator until three years ago when he was elected to the US Senate. His experience on national matters is limited and in international affairs, non-existent. But he is ambitious and will do and say what his handlers tell him. He is effective when he reads a teleprompter but much less so when he is forced to rely on the very little information he has accumulated over the last few months. Ultimately, Obama is a shallow man who mouths the liberal pieties that garner him applause from his leftwing, star-struck followers.

I do not know if I am being naive, but who is going to pay or this war. Every war was financed by the country. won way or another. Now we have Bush saying we need surge or any other statement about our occupation to throw more money or lives to satify his lack of knowledge or ego to go to the next level. Mc Cain would keep us in Iraq forever without paying one cent. Who is going to pay, who is going to sacrifice, not them, but the future grandchildren and our army & their families. Meanwhile Bush will go to his ranch & wait for future to justify his worst presidency in history.

That's good Dan. Funny we can't pull anything like that on Obama because he wasn't even in government yet. It's easy to place blame after the fact.

I've been working for over 4 years; maybe they should make me CEO of the company...

Or better yet, when I was in the military for 4 years, maybe they should have made me the commandant...

Wait, I went to college too, 4 more years, I should have been the dean...!

Wake up.

John Mc Cain, Bush, and Cheny are members of a wicked gang of neocons who have damaged the economy of this country and started unnecessary wars that cost us billions of US$ and thousands of the lives of our young and brave soldiers. They have lied to all Americans about WMD in Iraq and unfortunately got us stuck in a quaqmire with no way out in the near future.Nobody can trust or tolerate such wicked clowns for another presidential term under any circustances. The proper place for John Mc Cain is a suitable oldman house, not the White House nor even the Senate.

It's interesting that the Republicans (who are allegedly conservatives who believe in smaller government) are the ones that want to give the government unfettered power in these matters. Then again, that's why I can't in good conscience vote Republican any more.

I can't I "like" Senator Obama's social policies, but as a believer in limited government I'm sadly forced to admit that Democrats are the ones that are more in favor of the most important limits on government power.

Never thought I'd see the day that happened...

The rapid responses to the usual Republican-McCain scare tactics will go a long way toward deflating their self-righteous egoism and expose their duplicity on security matters, both national and international. Their dogmatically driven war-mongering is all they have to show for 7 years of squandered opportunity and the timeframe within which the international security is hanging precariously on the balance. The Obama administration with new ideas is the only chance the U.S. has to reorganize its priorities and reassert a clear balance between diplomatic pursuasion and military coersion as two sides of the same coin. Their utility is only the means to a political solution, rather than the militarised John McCain policy that has'nt seen any Bush extravagant military adventurism it does not like.

Posted by: Thabo Mda | June 17, 2008 4:46 PM

McCain is naive to believe that American blood and American weaponry alone can prevent acts of terrorism. We need the friends and allies dissed by Bush and we need a strategy for drying up the swamps that provide terror's breeding grounds as well as a stronger military, as Obama proposes.

Posted by: FirstMouse | June 17, 2008 4:44 PM

Two qoutes for Mr. Obama:

"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have."
- Thomas Jefferson

"No man can lead a public career really worth leading, no man can act with rugged independence in serious crises, nor strike at great abuses, nor afford to make powerful and unscrupulous foes, if he is himself vulnerable in his private character."
- Theodore Roosevelt

Posted by: Tired Libertarian | June 17, 2008 4:39 PM

I am afraid for the security of the US if Obama - a terrorist sympathizer is elected. Already his associations - and his wife act as if America hasn't earned its leadership role in teh world - through sacrifice and fighting for freedom. Obama is not a patriot - clearly - since he does not act as if he will protect the country. Rather - he prefers to give away hard earned freedoms to terrorists - through negotiation. God only knows what Obama will 'negotiate' away. Obama's ideas are extreme and threaten the security of the US and to the American way of life.

Posted by: Spinaltapxx | June 17, 2008 4:37 PM

The unfortunate reality of Senator John
McCain is that ten years ago he was at
least somewhat rational in his thinking
as far as national and international
policy issues are concerned. That Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from his
Vietnam years seems to have manifested
itself in the traitor and dangerous
politico he has become. At least Senator
Obama is willing to take risks which
might save our nation from sinking deeper into the depths of hell.

Posted by: Jet-Man | June 17, 2008 4:33 PM

None of the republicans who could have really made a difference showed any fighting interest for Bush's mantle. They shunned it like a leper's tattered clothes. John McCain was there waiting for eight years. He had a record of being tortured by the Viet Cong for four years and offered a good place in military after his release. He rejected it and chose politics. He was elected senator on his torture record. It was plain sailing. No thinking. No hard decisions. No hassle. Any well qualified psychiatrist would say a person tortured for four years looses the 'luster' of his conscious mind because his unconscious mind which is the source of all ideas is permanently damaged. He can only follow and think of matters that are already there. He cannot initiate new solutions and find new paths. The only blue print he has is that of Bush and he will have to follow it complemented with his own traits. Bush is a vindictive, aggressive and manipulating salesman. McCain will be none of these. That is quite something to his credit. Bush sent his soldiers in quicksand because he hated Sadam's guts and his peaceful management of Iraq during ten years of sanctions with amenities that do not exist now. No president can get America out of the quagmire that Bush deliberately chose for this great country out of mere personal jealousy and Cheney's greed for oil.

If Senator John McCain's economics knowledge is any indication of what
a "Bush Clone" will do if elected
president in November, then it's
only fair to assume that his foreign
policy, and policies in general, will
will be a further devastating blow
to our nation's future recovery. And,
like our present non-president, George
W. Bush, if elected, few will listen
to him, because of his total lack of
focus on reality.

Posted by: spinaltapxx | June 17, 2008 4:20 PM

First of all, it's not Karl Rove. The Karl Rove strategy is you attack an opponent's strength. Counter-terrorism is not Obama's strength. So it's not a Karl Rove strategy.
Second, I'm glad Obama hit back, but he's being too defensive. He should really attack on this point, i.e., he should use a Karl Rove strategy. Attack McCain on national security. There is lots of material out there to use -- McCain's varying positions on Iraq, his heavily guarded tour of the Baghdad marketplace, etc.

Is there anybody that has violated our Constitution more than the Republicans?

No.

Is there anybody that has supported torture more than McSame?

Bush.

Is there anybody who has supported warrantless spying on American citizens more than McCain?

No. Well, Bush.

Is there anybody who is gladder to stick our children with the bill for our pre-lost "war on terror" than McSame?

No.

Is there a stupider, war-losing, Islamophobic, liar than Bush?

Yes.

Posted by: spinaltapxx | June 17, 2008 4:17 PM

"McCain's attack today was a "Karl Rove strategy" and "straight out of the Republican playbook."

"I'm frankly a little disgusted by some of the attacks of some of my friends on the McCain campaign to use the same old tired tactics of the past several campaigns, trying to paint one party as weak on terrorism and completely distorting the record of one party, to drive a wedge for partisan advantage and to frighten Americans."

That's the only way Republicans have ever known how to campaign. Some times it works. What is clear is that they don't know how to govern. We've seen what happens when an anti-government Party get's hold of the reins of power. How's it been working for all you folks?

Dear American Voters, reporters and political professionals,

Hon. Senator McCain and Obama, besides each having many attributes and characteristics. The critical differences between the two of these presidential presumptive nominees are as under:

1. Presidential "Temperament and Composer".
2. Little Washington "insider Versus outsider" experience.
3. "Vision and mission" for our nation future rather than past.
4. American policies, " first U.S.A Centric" than any other country [ ies ] centric.

In my professional opinion Senator Obama leads in all above qualities.

The need of our next movement and generation is a change. The Change in " past Washington and its Leadership". A change we can believe in and not the seductive, deceptive, and confusing slogan of "leader we can believe in" [? Effexor ?".

Our Greatgrand Nation has to address many present and future challenges and start with new clean "Slate and Senator".

God Bless America. its diverse people, and our Greatgrand Nation.

Our Greatgrand Nation is needs the CHANGE at every level and for long time.

I am sure Senator Obama with the help of Senator Clinton and her supporters, can deliver that CHANGE.

Please stay involved, stay engaged, and stay informed. Please do not allow any seduction, deception, and or confusion by some partisan media and leaders effect your vote [ Psychological Terrorism ]..

Yours truly,

COL. [retd] A.M.Khajawall
Disabled American Veteran
Forensic psychiatrist, Las Vegas

PS: Please talk about the " Presidential Temperament And Caliber " of our presumptive presidential Nominees. Thanks.
