Obama Ridicules McCain's Energy Plans
By Shailagh Murray
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Sen. Barack Obama criticized Sen. John McCain for extolling the "psychological" benefits of offshore drilling and mocked his $300 million prize for a new electric car battery as a "bounty" for "some rocket science."
The Illinois senator dismantled his GOP opponent's energy policies one by one, yet another sign that issues like oil independence, conservation, and alternative power are forming one of the dominant domestic policy battlegrounds of the general election.
Obama described high gas prices as the product of "false promises" and irresponsible policies" that have prevented new technologies and energy sources from replacing dirty fossil fuels. "For decades, John McCain has been part of this failure in Washington," Obama told a town hall meeting at nature preserve located near the Las Vegas strip.
He pointed to McCain's remark yesterday in Fresno that while his proposal to expand offshore drilling would have little short-term impact, "the fact that we are exploiting those reserves would have psychological impact that I think is beneficial," McCain said.
"Psychological impact," Obama rhetorted. " In case you were wondering, that's Washington-speak for, 'It polls well.' It's an example of how Washington politicians try to convince you that they did something to make your life better when they really didn't."
Speaking today in Santa Barbara, McCain outlined a series of conservation proposals, telling the audience, "We're in the middle of a great debate in this presidential campaign about the energy security of the United States."
The Arizona senator took his own swipe at Obama. "Practical ideas are worth a lot more than uplifting lectures," McCain said. "It's not always a matter of making due with less energy. It's a matter of using energy in smarter ways."
Obama commended McCain's willingness to address climate change, unlike many of his Republican colleagues, "but time and time again, he has opposed investing in the alternative sources of energy that have helped fuel some of the very same projects and businesses he's highlighting in this campaign. He's voted against biofuels. Against solar power. Against wind power."
He did give McCain credit for proposing a contest to produce a better car battery. "But I don't think a $300 million prize is enough," Obama said. "When John F. Kennedy decided that we were going to put a man on the moon, he didn't put a bounty out for some rocket scientist to win - he put the full resources of the United States government behind the project."
McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds fired back, calling Obama "Dr. No" for rejecting offshore drilling and other energy production-boosting measures.
"John McCain has proposed an energy plan that calls for gas tax relief in the short term, increased exploration and energy development in the near term, and innovation and alternatives for long term energy independence. While John McCain is putting the country first with the best ideas from both parties, Barack Obama has become the 'Dr. No' of energy, refusing to accept any idea that will contribute to solving America's energy crisis."

"But I don't think a $300 million prize is enough,"
Why did they misquote Obama here?
It should read, "But I don't think a $300 million prize is the way to go"
Just say NO! to liberal media. Just say NO! to an Obama nation!
No! Obama!
Obama=charlatan

Do Obama criticizers have anything intelligent to say? We have head the "Hussein", "Liar", "Flip Flop" comment several times. We have heard that he only criticizes and never proposes anything. We have heard them say he is Muslim and he is not an American citizen. These diehard Republicans may be making themselves happy, but the rest of us are not dumb enough to accept their stupidity, deception, lies, and racism. I would just once like to hear a criticism of Obama that is based upon an intelligent understanding of him and the facts rather than typical Republican smear tactics. No wonder why McCain is losing: America is not dumb enough to fall for this cr*p again!

I don't get the "flip-flop" bull. Isn't it more important to be open-minded and realize when there are better alternatives than to be so focused on being "right." I think flip-flopping is a good thing. It's called changing your mind. I pray that we can get a man in office with enough intelligence to realize when a policy is no longer effective. If Bush had the brains he would have stopped renaming the war and stopped creating new goals and worked towards getting us out of this corporate building situation. Americans are losing and Corporations are making more money than ever. Also, we are not in an energy crisis and biofuels are leading to more pollution and global warming (Think about when the price of corn sky-rockets because of ethanol demands. The price of corn-eating animal meats/products, corn-made alcohol, and much more will be higher than ever.). Stop buying gas-guzzling SUVs and Hummers and prices will level due to a lower demand. And people who are against others because of their religion, race, or because their name is Hussein are the most unpatriotic of all. Patriotism isn't about blindly standing for or against something. Patriotic Americans should fight for a better country for all. Looking for change is what patriotism is about.

for the dumb airhead that called burn Brown's gas co2 needs a good schooling fast . so dumb A go to http://www.Voicenet.com/~eric/dennis.html or else you can find it on www.phact.org/elbgas.txt- . For any one with any knowege knows that burnt Hydrogen and Oxygen is water . so if you burn water you still get water dumb A . Now as to the rest of you that had nothing to do with this if you'll go to waterforgas you find in part that Mr. Jhon McCain has known about waterforgas and he and Bush have been keeping it from you .Fox News has been showing on their news that it truely works . You can go to ebay search waterforgas and buy itfor $9.99 or go to water4gas and buy it for $3.99 and build your own . But if you want to really get it going you can order the$24.99 book email download and build your own power sorce for your home from heating your home cooling your home to the lights in your home and Brown's gas is Hydrogen and oxygen which is water and used still makes water .but one airhead out there didn't have the sence to know that .Bow down redneck . any way McCain knows of the MDI Air car to be made in America in 2010 and sold here in 2010 .McCain also knows that Japan has the H2O car yes the Brown's gas car with noting but water to run on . But did McCain Tell you that he knew of this 30 YEARS ago? go to Daniel Dingel's water car and check it out . Oh air head Daniel Dingel's worked for NASA 30 years ago .Now where do you surpose NASA got Brown's gas to send ROCKETS including The Space Shuttle up with and not burn up the air with it , but to only turn it back into WATER ? Brown's gas is only water burn towater . NOW that is smart but how long has our government known this ? oh and Jhon McCain Mr. do good to you my butt.

Maybe you have not looked at the latest census bureau poverty statistics? The poverty has been increasing over the last 6 years of the Bush administration, increasing EVERY year. Facts and logic are a powerful combination. Republicans have neither.

You're missing the point. There are practical problems with McCain's plan. There is no clear definition of success. It's one thing to say you have invented it, but it is entirely another to develop a car that runs on it efficiently and can be used on modern day roads with modern day saftey standards. McCain's plan is setting up for a bunch of people to claim a prize which will not produce an effective end result. There are better ways to promote such a solution, and Obama has out-lined them in his energy plan. But I guess you haven't paid any attention to that, have you?
This is where it shows the level of intelligence in correlation to the candidate they support.

Excuse me, have you not been paying attention to anything?
Almost all criticisms of Obama that people are making are based upon ignorance. If you open up your ears and listen to what he is saying, you wouldn't be saying what you are saying. Obama has made his energy plan very clear, such as the investment in alternative energy and tax incentives for companies that do so.
Posted by: Don | June 25, 2008 7:33 PM
Does anyone realize oil eventually gained from domestic drilling will simply go onto the international oil markets? No, the Oil Barons are not here to serve the United States. They serve their stockholders and themselves, like any other publicly traded business.
So, the energy prize is a good idea, but an even better idea is to put all our resources to use, and get the oil monkey off our backs (as an energy source, many other exceptional uses for oil) forever!
It really shouldn't be partisan. Why do some seem so stuck on fossil fuels? Use a little imagination, man!

One must judge what a man will do in the future based on what he has done in the past. Obama has done nothing for the people of Illinois. I live in Chicago and we are paying the highest sales taxes in the country because of the tax happy democrats. They just didn't raise taxes on the rich. They raised taxes on the poor that barely make ends meet in the inner city. People have to drive out of the city and Crook County (controlled by the dems) to buy goods cheaper. The state wants to raise our income taxes. A lot of folks are moving to Indiana to escape from the tax happy democrats.
Mr Obama has done nothing but flap his gums. He says a lot of nothing. Have you ever gone to his Senate web site and look at his voting record? He is never voting on any bills because he is never there to vote.
I don't know where you are from, but I must say that living in the state of Illinois where Mr.Obama is a prominent politician is not a good place to be.
Look at his record! He has zero accomplishments.

Incorrect. OPEC controls prices, not Republicans. Does Obama do anything to correct OPEC? No. In Illinois, southern and central Illinois, Obama serves the oil men/women who pump oil (some 15% of our oil). That's a fact jack, and Obama has voted repeatedly for their interest. That's another fact.
Obama hasn't a clue.
McCain at least has submitted a resolution - that is to go after the speculators. Fortune and Forbes as well as Money Inc all have written great articles about regulating speculators (something McCain has demanded of Congress for ten years - with few backers both Democrats and Republicans)in the energy industry in order to stablize prices. If speculators were regulated (as in Teddy Roosevelts time) oil prices would be under $3.00 a gallon. That's a fact, jack.

Only a man (Obama) of great inadequacy stoops to ridicule. Obama should show dignity and cooperation, not arrogance.
McCain's idea of an Energy Prixe, like the Nobel Prize, or the World Food Prize, is an excellent venue to promote science into the race of developing the needed technology for energy indepedendence.
If Obama continue to mock this idea, then Obama must admit he mocks the Nobel Prize, the World Food Prize, and other notable and excellent disciplines that seek reward for hard work, exploration, and ingenuity.
Would Obama also mock such prizes as the Komen Prize on the Cure for Breast Cancer? If he mocks and refuses such an idea of an Energy Prize, (because he didn't think of it first, perhaps?) then he must be subject to putting down such notable prizes as the Komen Prize for a Cure for Breast Cancer.
Shame on Obama for being so arrogant and egotistical. He's like a child that always says "Me First!".

LOL @ Crazy Ol' Gramps McCain!
Republicans have no power without sucking off their masters in the oil industry, so he isn't fooling anybody. Didn't he just support Bush's energy "policy" (which was clearly written by oil execs) for drilling in protected lands as they sit idly on 68,000,000 acres of undeveloped land.
Mmmmkay then.

Obama won't do anything that will HELP the American People other than making them feel good, until they go to leave the Obama-Rally in their GAS powered cars and have to stop at the Gas station and pay well over $4.00 a gallon.
Just wait till November when the American People are not only paying of $5.00 a Gallon and paying sky high Home Heating Costs - Do you think they are going to vote with their wallets RATHER than the "good feelings" that Obama's last speech left?
I think not.

"Higher gas prices are the result of many reasons. Growing developement in China and India, shortage of refineries, geo-political instability such as in Nigeria, the Iraq War, speculators and other factors have contributed to higher gas prices."
China and India didn't double the total number of cars on the road in the last year. Your "facts" are disguising the primary cause of the prices which is the Iraq war and Republican foreign policy.
"Obama, however, is fine with higher gas prices as it suits his philosophy."
That claim is false and it is a blatant distortion of his words. This is typical Republican distortion and smear. The American people are not dumb enough to fall for this nonsense this year. They know what your party is about and what they are up to.
"McCain actually wants lower gas prices and is willing to do something about it."
Yeah, drilling holes in the heads of seals in order to find more oil, which will not help in the short term but will provide "psychological imapct". That sounds like a real solution to me!
"We all know and acknowledge that it is in our best interest to get off dependence on foriegn oil and to invest in clean energy technologies. McCain seems to have a more practical approach in achieving that goal."
More practical if you are dumb enough to believe the big-oil Republicans!

The allready free and open areas in our country that are open for drilling have allready been explored, as a matter of fact, they still survey and explore all over this country on a daily basis. The oil is there, no doubts .Its again the Big oil companies, our weak kneed politicians and pure greed that keep this oil from being opened up to use, and keeps us dwindling as a great nation.

This is a man that failed academically when young, as a militar in the New York Military Academy (last two from bottom), an opportunistic of his military self and family background. Thousands of heroes never have talked about themselves ever. Just they did their best when the country needed. A man without good judgment, is no good as a president. Why he did not lend some of his experience to Bush?. We would not be in such a perilious situation.

As for the energy discussion, and i think there both a little off on their opinions,, Obama is right that all of Cains B.S. is just a bunch of vote pandering.I really cant beleive Cains camp is allowing the discussion about the tax holiday to ensue any further,,not only would it put another DEFICIT of huge proportions on an allready overburdened budget, how do you propose telling every state and city that they have to forgo their income, when McCain is in the party of "smaller federal government, give the power back to the states""
As for both of them muttering about nuclear and solar and wind, its all pandering to the power companies, not You and I , basically telling them "yes, well lety you rape America for untold billions of development and improvement subsidies, so you can come back and raise their rates due to UNFORSEEN maintenance, or expansion for more efficient energy transmission!!

To "danielhancock": I grew up for 13 years in Houston. I lived there when Bush was governor of Texas, and Houston surpassed LA for the first time in history as the city with the worst smog in the nation. The east side of the city is full of petrochemical plants and refineries. The waters of the gulf have been ruined by constant oil spills in the Port of Houston to the point that tar balls regularly wash up on the beaches of Galveston. I have swam in those waters and more than a decade later still have chronic ear infections because of it. You say they can make exploration cleaner. I say they should've done it 40 years ago, it's too late now.

Maybe it's time to let the leftists have a go at it and see if there's an improvement.

The US has enough coal in it to power the entire country for a minimum of 300 years. With as much coal as this nation has available we should be investing heavily in clean coal and zero emissions coal technologies. Placement of wind turbines in Tornado Alley and along much of the west coast seems like a common sense solution as both are very windy areas for much of the year. And placement of solar power farms in areas that see high percentages of sunny days (like arizona where I am) also seems like a common sense solution. Yet there's very little discussion of the last two options I listed.

Why should we open more land for oil exploration when they have 86 MILLION ACRES available now and ARE NOT USING THEM?! Use what you already have if you want to increase output.
-------------------------------
There seems to be a group on this issue including Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) that think they can fool people be citing a large number such as 86 million acres to make it seem like oil companies have a lot of area to explore in even though that figure amounts to less than ten percent of the available area for exploration offshore.
Also, just because you get a lease, it does not automatically mean you are going to find oil and gas on it. To optimize the chance of discovery, more areas should be open to exploration which is a lot cleaner than it used to be.
Citing a large number is not the same as making a convincing argument that there is enough offshore areas open for oil and gas exploration.
Posted by: danielhancock | June 24, 2008 9:25 PM
Barack Obama is making the same mistake that John Kerry in 2004 did by substituting criticism of the opposing candidate for a program of his own.
Sure offshore drilling and drilling in ANWAR will not be an instant fix to the problem but neither is alternative energy or conservation. We have an all hands on deck situation where we should use all available sources of energy use as a bridge to get us to the point where alternative energy are available on a practical scale.
The US is a petroleum based economy and at some point we will have to get off it. But that transition will be a painful one and should be postponed as long as possible. There is more oil and gas to be found and the current prices make exploration and production of it profitable. So why not go and get it?
Anyway, what was Obamas energy plan? I forgot. Oh yeah, it was to impose a windfall profits tax on oil companies. That was really a success when Jimmy Carter did it. (sarcasm)
Obama says that John McCain's plan to open up offshore drilling won't bring gas prices down. Maybe he could explain how a windfall profits tax is going to bring down the price of gas.

This whole "we need more exploration" is nothing but a search for an excuse to open the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge and that needs to NEVER HAPPEN. EVER. More oil exploration will not pay off with lower gas prices for atleast a decade. And gas tax holidays will only put more money in Big Oil's pocket. It won't lower prices a nickle, of course McCain supports both. Why pay attention to what nearly every economics in the country has said won't work? What do they know, right?
McCain wants to double the number of nuclear plants in use around the US, when less than 3 years ago the GAO was able to buy as much cesium fuel as they wanted using altered credentials. McCain wants to talk security and nuclear power, talk about that first. The LAST thing America needs is to sell nuclear fuels to terrorists to kill our citizens itself, and with twice as many reactors that will happen. They've already proven that it will.
We don't need a $300 million prize for new ideas. We need $300 million of funding for ideas we already have that work. Washington needs to stop giving all of our tax dollars to their buddies. And all of that is without even mentioning that building all of those new nuclear reactors WON'T CREATE ANY ENERGY FOR ATLEAST A DECADE. THAT WON'T HELP US NOW.
To "Brook": 50% of all statistics are made up on the spot. You say we need to use the resources we have, I say you're 100% right. Go preach to the oil companies to use the 86 million acres of land they already have and aren't developing.
To "knew it all along": You, sir, are a hatemongering bigoted imbecile. Go hide in a cave somewhere from the millions of "Husseins" in the world. In the middle east and africa that name is about as common as Michael in the US. GET OVER IT. And by the way, it isn't the sunnis causing problems, it's the radical extremist shias. Grow a clue and freaking use it.
To "BillinNY": McCain won't do anything good for this country, he'll do what his lobbyists and 527 group backers tell him to, none of which will help anyone but them. It's the republican way. He wants to make Bush's disasterous tax cuts for the top 10% most wealthy permanent and thinks that will help our economy. Most economists in the country disagree. I trust them more than him.
VOTE OBAMA IN '08!

Algae Algae Algae is the answer to our fuel problems. This is a real dirty word in the oil business. http://www.valcent.net/s/Ecotech.asp?ReportID=182039 http://www.valcent.net/i/misc/Vertigro/index.html

People like you and McCain are why america doesn't support returning troops as much as before Nam.
Its something you signed up for, or agreed to do as a citizen. And now you claim to be somehow more knowledgable because you were involved in armed conflict against an enemy? I think you a little full of yourself, and the BS your shoveling.
Then you go and call out Obama's middle name - a fear tactic.
You sir, are a coward.

Mccain's campaign manager is Lindsay gramm who had hand on the Enron loophole, and the Sibprime loan mess, is that what is going to change America, good luck.

Ladies and Gentlemen, for the last 8 years Republicans have been badgering and beating up the Democrats, and the Dems just stood there and took it without fighting back. NOT THIS YEAR. Not this time. Finally we have a Democratic candidate who is fighting back hard, who is making the right points and making the right arguments to bring America forward. We are witnessing the beginning of a Democrat party revival lead by a great man with great intelligence and great vision. Do not back down from Republican slander. These guys are idiots. Every problem we are facing today you can be 100% sure is due to Republican politics. We have a choice this year between the same old crap, or change that will lead America in a better direction. Alternative energy is the solution, not oil oil oil that is the base and the strength of the Republican party. We've already given the Exxons and Enrons far too much. Vote for change, Obama 2008!

Hey People,
McCain's best bud Phil Graham is the cause of all our gasoline price problems. He introduced the Enron loophole that was signed into law by Bush, with McCain voting for it.
Anybody who is anybody in the Energy biz knows that speculation is driving up the price of gas, not supply and demand. Seriously, this unregulated speculation is caused by the Enron loophole.
All of you need to understand that McCain has not come out and said he would close this loophole. He will continue it and gas will keep going up and UP AND UP!!
Vote for Obama as he has guaranteed to close this loophole and save us all a LOT of $$. Not to mention putting the welfare of the country and economy before the corporate interest of the wealthy Bushies who got us into this mess.
McCain = Bush's energy policies and more corporate profit at our expense

Hey "Franky" McCain is an idiot, an elite snob according to you, but then he is a war hero, a multi-term Senator, and a candidate for the Presidency, these are not the credentials of an idiot. At least McCain has an energy policy, all I hear from B. Hussein Obama is rhetoric, great rhetoric for sure, but energized by hot air only. He has no history of doing anything beyond the "neighborhood." sort of like Mr. Rogers, fantasy. BTW a question from those of us who survived the Nam, and wars since, when was the last time you stared down a gun barrel for your country, have you ever done anything for your country above whining and judgmental partisan complaints. There is, indeed, an idiot in the room, look in the mirror, he is right in front of you...

Not slander facts. Get em.
??? First, nothing of which you declare as facts can be found on wikipedia link...
Obama's father was Kenyan Phillipino.
His father was not an oil exectutive!
His father converted from Islam (not Muslim... are all African and Middle Eastern folks the same to you?) to christianity
Obama is christian, not tied to ANY radical muslims anywhere, and certainly is not a Sunni.
To boot, refering to wikiP as your reality reference is rather sad as anyone can alter, at least temporarily, the reality of any description with the click of a mouse. So, its not 'crying' when sorry folks like you spew crap like you have today.
Again, what are you smoking?

Wow Obama will lead our country into destruction. I am actually heavily involved in the industry and the only real world applications that would put dents in this are what McCain is talking about. The major one is Nuclear power plants, we need alot more to be built this also helps keep all that peskey coal out of the air. Both these presidential nominees are speaking in rhetoric and don't even have anything to do with this crisis.

Are you obamamites always crying about slander and whining like you did w/ hillary?
Are you going to take that freedom from us as well?

"Knew it all along" ... boy, what are you smoking? You are oh for three so far in your fiction/slander. Hard to understand why folks feel compelled to make this crap up; perhaps they feel impotent in arguing the actual issues.

There are no new oil 'resources' for McCain or anyone else to immediately put on the table, unless you count Opec (which has a mind of its own)... and even if Open doubled its output of crude, the infrastructure of refining that much, or any signficant increase of, oil does not exist. McCain's drilling plan literally wouldn't bring actual gasoline from that drilling for over two decades... and the amount of gasoline would be insignificant with respect to world wide production- in other words it will have almost no effect on prices (and we would have to wait >20years for such no effect). It is not like it is the US government's oil and the US government will somehow build the drilling infrastructure, government transport, and government refine... at somehow a low added cost and then pass that ficticious cost savings on to the US consumer. The oil--> gas and its costs go into the world market where it becomes a drop in the bucket. However, anything that takes more than a soundbit of logic is unfortunately lost on many folks and the blink of the eye analysis of much of the press
Posted by: ArthurW from VA | June 24, 2008 6:19 PM
1. Obama isn't green. His 2nd dad was a phillipino MUSLIM oil exeutive.
2. Obama is tied to radical muslims in Jordan and Beyond
3. Obama is Sunni and aligned with the evil empire of G. Bush
This is sooo ridiculous. OUr planet is in peril and we must decrease dependency on the middle east.
Obama will do whatever it takes to continue western dependance on arab oil dependancy
Posted by: Knew it all along | June 24, 2008 6:09 PM
McCain understands that putting more oil (and natural gas) on the market has to be done. The polling today is clear. 70% of Americans think it's crazy not to be using our own resources. Obama believes a magic rabbit will be pulled out of a hat and come save us.
Posted by: Brook | June 24, 2008 6:05 PM
That is awesome, that's a one-two punch if every saw one.
"But I don't think a $300 million prize is enough," Obama said. "When John F. Kennedy decided that we were going to put a man on the moon, he didn't put a bounty out for some rocket scientist to win - he put the full resources of the United States government behind the project."

Obama is right - McCain is an idiot!
McCain thinks that somehow we will all "feel better" knowing he is ruining the environment for nothing.
McCain really thinks that lying to people is good for them, since he knows so much better. What an elite snob!!
McCain - I hope you and Cindy sleep well on your bed of oil blood money.

Pretty loaded headline with the use of the word "Ridicules." Too many of the Wash. Post journalists or bloggers are very biased.
Just like your colleague Alec MacGillis and the majority of Wash. Post political writers:
Shailagh Murray = right wing, Republican, Conservative, Neocon.

Thank God I'm not a die-hard republican! I'd probably vote for McCain and, with my luck, be stuck with him. I like what Obama has planned for the future. I looked at both McCain and Obama's official campaign sites and was amazed at what I saw! Obama actually wrote up plans of what he wants to do and posted the goaled deadline. McCain simply stated "Americans need relief right now from high gas prices. John McCain will act immediately to reduce the pain of high gas prices. " Where is the plan in that?
