More Energy Advertising From McCain

By Ed O'Keefe
John McCain has released another TV ad about energy, with yet another campaign slogan.

"Purpose" will be cycled into the campaign's current ad buys on national cable stations, and in Nevada, New Hampshire, Colorado, Missouri, New Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Iowa, according to a campaign source.

The message: McCain has a "comprehensive bipartisan plan" to lower gas prices, and reduce American dependence on foreign oil by promoting domestic exploration.

But in another example of what one GOP strategist described as the message "schizophrenia" that surrounds the campaign, this latest ad features the new slogan, "Country First." The campaign has also used "A Leader We Can Believe In" and "Reform. Prosperity. Peace" as taglines since the general election began in earnest.

Most of McCain's recent advertising efforts have been energy-themed: His campaign has released a Web-only ad critical of Barack Obama's lack of energy proposals; another Web ad that summarizes his energy proposals; and an ad that talks up his environmental and energy proposals.

It's not clear, however, how the energy issue will resonate with voters; energy ranks low as a worry in the new Los Angeles Times-Bloomberg poll, but placed higher in a recent Post-ABC News survey.

Your use of the term "schizophrenia" in this context is unhelpful. This serious, incurable disorder, which affects about 1% of the population, has many and varied symptoms but 'two identities' is not one of them. You do sufferers a great disservice by misrepresenting their symptoms.

The economy 2008 is expected to be bad, but there are two bright spots, Oil-producing firms and polling-organizations!

McCain and his campaign are just trying to get on the political playing field against Obama when it comes to energy and domestic drilling since it polls well!

McCain has had about 4 months to operate in general election mode against the eventual Democratic nominee. Obama is approaching 3 weeks as the Democratic nominee in general election mode. The news media is so concerned about continuing the excitement (and more importantly great ratings) of this year Presidential campaign, that they are trying to push expectations ahead of any actual voting.

In all fairness, these different polling organizations should begin general election polling in mid-August. By then Obama would have had 2 months to be in general election mode and summer vacation will nearly be over.
