Bloomberg Decries 'Whisper Campaign' Against Obama

By Keith B. Richburg
NEW YORK -- In his effort to win over still skeptical Jewish voters, particularly in the critical swing state of Florida, Sen. Barack Obama today got an assist from a surprising source: New York's independent Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg

Bloomberg told a Jewish audience in Florida today that "demagogues" were engaging in a "whisper campaign" against Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, and he urged Jews to "reject" such wedge politics -- "loudly, clearly and unequivocally." A transcript of Bloomberg's remarks was released by his office here.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, Bloomberg said both Obama and the Republican's presumptive nominee, Sen. John McCain, were both committed to maintaining Israel's military security and to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Bloomberg said Jews, as voters, should welcome a spirited political debate "focused on the facts, and not let it descend into false rumor and innuendo."

"Unfortunately, we've already seen that happen," Bloomberg said. "As I'm sure many of you know, there are plenty of emails floating around the Internet targeting Jewish voters and saying that Senator Obama is secretly a Muslim, and a radical one at that. Let's call those rumors what they are -- lies."

Bloomberg said those spreading the rumors were pretending to be concerned about Israel's security, but in reality "Israel is just being used as a pawn, which is not that surprising, since some people are willing to stoop to any level to win an election."

He said McCain had already denounced the whisper campaign against Obama "which speaks to his character as a standup guy and an honest leader." He said McCain understands what it is like to be the target of such false attacks because when he ran against President Bush eight years ago, McCain "faced the same slimy, low-ball tactics during the 2000 South Carolina primary."

Bloomberg added, "And in this election, we must all stand up to this whisper campaign against Senator Obama. That's because it threatens to undo the enormous strides that Jews and Muslims have made together in this country -- and the enormous strides that Jews and African Americans have made together."

He later said in his speech, "It's up to us to reject the politics of ethnic and religious division. It's up to us to speak out against the lies and prejudice. It's up to us to stand up for the truth."

Bloomberg, a billionaire in his final term as mayor, flirted with the idea of running for president himself -- taking extensive polling and meeting with a ballot-access expert in Texas -- before announcing that he would not be a candidate. He has since been mentioned as a possible running mate for either McCain or Obama.

I get it...your really an Obama supporter who is posting anti-Obama messages, disguised by sarcasm as pro-Obama messages, so that even more independents decide to vote Obama because they think you are trashing him.....clever....or maybe your just so tied up in sarcasm, cynisism and vitriol that you can't get a positive sentence out.

Maybe you could try putting all that pent up energy you waste on name calling to good use and write what you actually believe in and who you support?

Just a thought.

Tell you what...I'll start you off...

My name is David...I support Obama. I believe he offers a real hope for a little stability in the world...and he seems like a genuine, caring guy........

Obama is not Muslim. How could he be? Heck, he attended Rev. Wright's Trinity Union Church for 20 years. He tithed there; he was married there; his children were baptized there. Trinity Church is where Obama was born again. Reverend Wright's inspirational message so touched Barack that Barack wrote a book based on Wright's message of Hope.

I dislike Barack for what he is - an arrogant, slimy, lying, salesman. I don't need to manufacture reasons.

Call out by name those involved in the whisper campaign. Bloomberg is filthy rich; he doesn't have to be afraid. Hey, maybe the Obama campaign is behind this whole "whisper campaign" as a way for his supporters to rally around him. The MSM and Obama supporters see racism in the shadows, waiting, lurking, whispering. See, that's the reason why Obama had to refuse Public Financing of his campaign. He need the cash to fend off these unseen, unnamed, powerful forces hatching plans right now as we speak. Heck, that's why he has changed his tune and now supports the FISA bill - Barack wants to spy on Americans who may have racist tendencies. My guess is that Obama is "wagging the dog". Barack has learned much from GW Bush about the politics of fear and manipulation.

Our mayor is right, we should denounce the whisper campaign started by Hillary's camp months ago. Let's focus on the truth: Obama is slightly to the left of Bernie Sanders but has much less experience than the socialist from Vermont.

One more thing...

The anti-Obama post which is supposedly from Kenya bares a remarkable resemblance to spam email's requesting a small investment for a large return.

Just like watching a bad actor on an advert (commercial) trying to behave like a member of the public, these spam's are written quite poorly to give the impression of being real.

The sad thing is that many people will be taken in by this just as they are by the spam scams.

I also note that any McCain supporters on this site seem to focus almost exclusively
on negative comments about Mr Obama or his wife. I wonder what they actually know about Mr. Mcain or his policies?

I guess they don't really care. In my travels I've found that biggotts, sycophants, fear-mongers, zealots and gluttons rarely do care.

All of those who have written anti-Obama sentiment are barely literate.

Of all the people on the planet Jews are the least easily fooled by rumor and innuendo. Just talk to them and trust their very good instincts. Obama will have no problem with the Jewish community in Florida. Whether they vote for him or not it will not be because of BS. I have been in business in South Florida for over 40 years and I can tell you, Jewish people can spot BS a mile away be it Mccain or Obama.

This stuff cracks me up a little. They talk as if people of various groups are just a bunch of sheep to them who can't think for themselves and need to be told what they should think.. Be it Hillary with her women who I guess she thinks can't think for themselves, )how disrespectful is that) or the blacks and now Jewish people.

Obama Polishes His Resume
June 20, 2008

His first ad of the post-primary season puffs up his legislative accomplishments.

Obama touts his legislative accomplishments, and those claims don't stand up as well under scrutiny. I

In order to establish his bona fides as a politician who cares about working families, Obama cites his success with three relevant bills. But he doesn't mention that two of the three pieces of legislation were actually passed by the Illinois Senate, not the U.S. Senate. Obama's campaign tells us that when he says, "I passed laws moving people from welfare to work," he is referring to the bill that created Illinois' Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program in 1997.

Obama was one of five original sponsors of the bill, which set limits on public assistance and required welfare recipients to outline plans for moving into the workforce. The law that "cut taxes for working families" is a 2000 bill, on which Obama and 35 others were later added as cosponsors, instituting an earned income-tax credit for the state. Both bills affected only Illinois residents.

The only national law in Obama's ad is the one that "extended health care for wounded troops," and it's dubious whether he can claim full responsibility for that one. H.R. 4986, which became public law 110-181 in 2008, includes provisions from several Obama-sponsored bills. His ideas made it into law, but Obama was not a sponsor or cosponsor of H.R. 4986 itself.

Finally, it has always been our position that it's misleading when a member of a legislative body says that he or she "passed a law," "cut taxes" or makes any similar claim to single-handed lawmaking. It takes more than one legislator to get these things done. In addition to the sponsors and the cosponsors, sometimes dozens of them, the bill needs the support of a majority in both houses. Usually, a governor or president needs to then sign a bill into law, unless the legislature comes up with a veto-proof majority.

So for Obama to say that he "passed a law" casts him as a legislative Lone Ranger, hogging credit that properly belongs to other parties as well.

When Mayor Bloomberg speaks to Jews in Florida, he is minding his own business. He has said that he wants to support having a campaign that is run based on issues and not on the basis of sleaze politics. Nowhere in this article does it say that Bloomberg supports Obama. What he supports is making a voting decision on the basis of the issues. If Obama were a Muslim it would be an issue to some Jews, I would not agree with their reasoning but it would be fair. Since he is not, Bloomberg should speak up because he wants the campaign to be about issues, not smears.

Many people as they age become less flexible in their viewpoint and view the world through the lens of their youth.

Arabs and Jews, for over a century, have tried treating each other as antagonists and it certainly has not worked well. The current administration and a McCain administration would view Israel in the friend or foe model. Israel needs to move on from that and they may recognize that and since they want to negotiate with Syria. That is incompatible with the McCain-Bush world view, but not the Obama view.

The older Jewish population still view Arabs solely as armed opponents. Since that model has failed, a new model must be constructed. Since Obama is not wed to the past the way McCain is (take Iraq as an example) he could be misinterpreted by older Jews as favoring the Arabs and they would be susceptible to this Muslim rumor.

Bloomberg, who is highly respected in the Jewish community, has a civic duty to correct that misinterpretation so that American Jews can decide on the merits of both candidates.

The comments on Kenya and the political troubles there were completely wrong-headed and make no sense to anyone who has spent time in Kenya and understands the sociology and politics of the country. To tie Barack Obama to any election irregularities in Kenya because his father was a Kenyan is ridiculous.

Readers tempted to support offshore drilling should read this report from the Energy Information Administration:

So, given that offshore drilling would have a negligible impact on our energy problems, the question should not be "should we drill the OCS?" but "what are we going to do to *really* fix our energy problems?" Right?

Celeste and Loren Davis are Missionaries in Africa and can shed some light on one of our Presidential candidates. Thanks for sending out an alert about Obama. We are living and working in Kenya for almost twelve years now and know his family (tribe) well. They are the ones who were behind the recent Presidential election chaos here.

Thousands of people have been displaced by election violence (over 350,000) and I don't know the last count of the dead. Obama under "friends of Obama" gave almost a million dollars to the opposition campaign who just happened to be his cousin, Raila Odinga, who is a socialist trained in east Germany. He has been trying to bring Kenya down for years and the last president threw him in prison for trying to subvert this country! December 27th elections brought cries from ODM (Odinga Camp) of a rigged election. Obama and Raila speak daily. As we watch Obama rise in the US we are sure that whatever happens, he will use the same tactic, crying rigged election if he doesn't win and possibly cause a race war in America.

What we would like you to know is what the American press has been keeping a dirty little secret. Obama IS a Muslim and he IS a racist and this is a fulfillment of the 911 threat that was just the beginning. Jihad is the only true Muslim way. We have been working with them for 20 years this July! He is not an American as we know it. Please encourage your friends and associates not to be taken in by those that are promoting him. It is world wide jihad. All our friends in Europe are very disturbed by the Muslim infiltration into their countries. By the way, his true name is Barack Hussein Muhammed Obama. Won't that sound sweet to our enemies as they swear him in on the Koran!

God Bless you. Pray for us here in Kenya. We are still fighting for our nation to withstand the same kind of assault that every nation, including America, is fighting. Takeover from the outside to fit the new world order. As believers, this means we will be the first targets. Here in Kenya, not one mosque was burned down, but hundreds of churches were burned down, some with people in them, burned alive.

Jesus Christ is our peace but the new world order of Globalism has infiltrated the church and confused believers into thinking that they can compromise and survive. It won't be so. I will send you a newsletter we sent out in February documenting in a more cohesive manner what I've tried to say in a few paragraphs.

God Father,

I tend to agree with you that Obama is not particularly religious. But in politics you have to claim to belong son some sort of church if you want a future. Most unfortunate, especially when you consider that John Adams said that this would be "the best of all possible worlds if there were no religion." No politician would be able to say that today. He is required to lie.

As to his being a Moslem because for part of his life he was in a Moslem household, I don't accept that. Our family lived in a Moslem country and the children went to went to school with Moslems and studied the Koran. When they got older we moved to Catholic Portugal and sent them to school in England where they attended Anglican services. They are not Moslem or Anglican or Catholic. In fact exposure to so many religions makes you realize how ridiculous they all are. They are atheists, as am I and my husband.

i hope you don't kiss your mother with that mouth. I can hardly believe you wrote that your post contained very little rumor. It is 90% rumor sprinkled with a few facts. Sure you wrong nice about misrepresenting Senator Obama, but you still spread lies. Birth does not dictate your religion in the muslim faith, only in SOME countries. You are what you make of yourself be it religious, economic, social, ect... At least here in the USA. From the bawn of this country we have accerted that all are created equal, with equal access to opertunity, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Free to excercise one's religion and choose that religion. The consitution even says specificly NO RELIGIOUS TEST SHALL BE CONDUCTED TO THOSE APPOINTED TO OFFICE. Your rants about Muslims makes it clear that you your self are willing to persecute based on ones faith.

We have worked hard as a country to oversome many of humanities long running injustices. In just over 200 years We have done more to provide equality than any country on record, past or present. We are not done, we still have more to do, but the progress as a whole is something I take great pride in as an american. Womens rights, child labor, racial equality, unions, the bill of rights... every one of them, the military spirt, those who have volunteered to serve, travel to the moon, relious freedom...

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, I truly believe that Senator Obama IS a christian and is not a muslim but not because it matters what faith he is. Because it does not matter what faith he is. I will support any candidate who fights to improve the system with integrity. Who is willing to tell it like it is even if it does not reflect the party line. By the way I am not commited to either candidate. I am (like most americans )evaluating the candidates on the merits, and there views as compared to my own. Many americans have made their choice, Many americans are undesided. As an American who oposes ignorance and deception. GROW UP, if you what to spread rumors ... GO BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL!

Yes, Obama is a Christian. But would it matter if her were a Moslem, or a Jew, or a Hindu? What does that have to do with anything? Except for a miniscule minority, Moslems, like everyone else, just want to tend their gardens.

I am fed up with religion in politics. It has no place. Religion is supposed to be a personal thing. So practice whatever you want and mind your own business.

He is eratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper, and he worries me". He also guaduated 6th from the BOTTOM of his class at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. This class had 899 students in it. "Bombs Away" was in the lowest 5%. It is likely that the only reason he was given a degree was because his father was an admiral. He also voted with Bush's sycophants 89% of the time when he did show up for Senate votes, which was less than 50% of the time. What kind of service is this for the people of Arizona?? Even Barry Goldwater didn't like him! To elect this old fuddy-duddy President would be a monumental mistake and continue the present disasterous Republican tyranny for another 8 years.

Posted by: alan | June 20, 2008 10:01 PM | Report abuse

It is certainly very bad to rumor, but most Americans enjoy doing it in their spare times. Here is my two cents, which contain very little rumor though.

There is no question that Obama is not religious at all. You can't believe anyone educated in Harvard can in anyway be seriously religious. However, as all the enlightened/educated man with political ambition, he is very well aware the power of organized religions and their effect in fooling and controlling lower class people. He realize it is his opportunity to tap into that rich source of power very few of his caliber has tapped into in America before. He even deliberately chose to work with a radical black church that fit very well into his ambition.

As a man overly obsessed with himself (evidence: written not one, but two books about himself at the age of 43!), Obama is also aware of his short comings. He found Islam is a land mine in American politics, but his roots are unfortunately deep in that religion (biological father, step father are Muslims). This obviously became a concern of right wing Christians as well as Jews. Such concern of course is only based on his middle name. Many right wing nuts tend to make an issue of his name, which is stupid at best. For this reason, he has always been in the denying mode about his Muslim background. A recent example is his denial of two head scarfed possibly Muslim women to sit in the audience behind him in a rally in Detroit (you may say it was done by his assistant and it was not his campaign policy blah blah, but you need to suspend your disbelief for accept the explanation).

On the other hand, the Muslim world has very high expectation for him (Just go ask your roommate from Iran. This is not only because his less aggressive position on Iran and terrorism, but also because they have a more subtle reason. According to Islamic law, a man born to a Muslim is a Muslim, no matter if the man observe or not. Betraying Islam is sin that require death. However, if doing so is for a higher purpose that save the life of Muslims, the person is excused from the harsh treatment. In a sense, the Iranians expect Obama's conversion to Christian is for such a higher purpose.

If elected, in a sense, Obama will present a conflict of interest. On the one hand, American interest may require him to act militarily on Islamic nations, but on the other hand, Muslims expect him to save them. If he act the way America ask him to do, the anger from the Muslim world will perhaps double what other American president will receive. With people willing to kill themselves to get Obama and his family killed, I guess the only safe place for him is to stay in a secret, highly guarded facility for life. How are we going to deal with this, and how do we make sure the president is acting in the best interest of its people??

I guess Obama's promise to give Jerusalem over to Israel wasn't a strong enough selling point.

Particualrly when he changed his mind after Paelsatine protested his offer to give away the capital of their country.

And then there is that racist church that he blonged to where his Catholic priest friend did that horrible parody of a white woman crying. Oh and his mentor praised the Black Muslim movement (which continuously spews anti-Jewish rhetoric). I guess those supporters and advisors were more like the shout out campaign?

Mayor-Blooomberg is probably one of the wise old men alive today in America. That's the way to go Mr. Mayor. We're tired with these ethnoreligious divisions. It's of course, not enough to say that we're going to run clean campaign on both sides; meanwhile smears against either senators go by unnotice.

Indeed, Jew voters have rights to say anything they want against both candidates, but they should also know that Israel isn't the only country in the world America befriend its the most. Henceforth, they should exercise their rights of questioning any candidates' stance toward Israel with cautious and cares. In other words, the jew voters should use facts not smears, distortions, and lies when questioning Obama's stances on the Jewish State.

I don't endorse Islam radicalism toward the Jewish State at all. However, radical elements within the Muslim world should not be used as pretex by Israel and Jew Americans to diatribe Obama's candidacy.

I agree wholeheartedly with Dan and others. The Washington Post does a disgraceful, truly shameful job running this website. Every comment board is utterly dominated by racist, bigoted sleaze and viral swift-boating.

Post editors: why don't you show some minimal respect to your readers and invest some energy in moderating these boards?

I would like to second the post quoted below! I have posted and emailed everyone at the Post I could think of to get people there to wake up and realize that they have an obligation to make the Comment sections work responsibly. If they fail to do this, they are contributing to the degredation of political discourse in general. By letting unacceptable posts remain without comment, the Washington Post has been reinforcing the deranged (usually far right-wing) lies that are doing so much to disrupt this electoral campaign. Thank you, Dan, for adding your thoughts to this.

To Charles,

Founded in 1841, Punahou School was originally a school for the children of Congregational missionaries. Because the local school were not good enough for their children. Not to convert the Hawaiians. Under the guise of converting the Hawaiian people to Christianity irreparable harm was done to the native people and their culture.

sam elliott's statement was a welcome addition to this blog until he made the stupid statement that lincoln's mother came from africa. racism is borne of just this sort of ignorance, of passing along unsubstantiated claims because people were too intellectually lazy to check it out. it took me two minutes to confirm what i already knew, that nancy hanks was born in what is now west virginia (then still part of virginia.
another blogger recommended and i second that suggestion wholeheartedly. check out those stupid e-mails before you pass them on. if you really want to be informed about issues of the day, go to

Thanks Mayor Bloomberg. And, Muskrat, nobody's talking about being "critical of Sen. Obama." Critical comments are, oh I don't know, disagreeing with his position on offshore drilling; or Roe v. Wade; or any other substantive issue that could possibly affect his governing the US. Now, just so we're clear, sending false and evil emails about his skin color or that he is some sort of "radical muslim" are, as Mayor Bloomberg noted above, LIES. Thanks to Mayor Bloomberg for telling it like it is. Hope this clears it up for you, muskrat.

The Washington Post should really clean up the Half frikin American comments and the
Muslim with 9 wives garbage. On the other hand if anyone believes these idiots then maybe they are the ones responsible for giving us the worst president on record,
George W Bush. Remember the line from Forrest

I'd be more impressed if he'd stand up against the demagogues who have targeted Jimmy Carter for taking a stand on principle rather than the well-trodden path of political expediency.

As a person who was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, who spent his life residing in Hawaii, except when he attended and graduated from Georgetown Law and worked in Wash., D.C., and who has many younger friends who were classmates of Sen. Obama's at Punahou School in Honolulu, there are several factors that clearly indicate that the rumor that Sen. Obama is a muslim is totally false, political slime: (1) Punahou was started by the New England missionaries that came to Hawaii to convert the Hawaiians to Christianity -- Puhanou is so steeped in Christian dogma, I should know all of our children graduated from it, that everyone comes out of that school a Christian, even if they wern't Christian going in; (2) During his years at Punahou, Sen. Obama referred to himself as "Barry" instead of Barach, because with most ethnics from Hawaii who have hard to pronounce names, he westernized his first name. Other examples of are ethnics with the name Mitsuo referring to themselves as "Mits" and Tamotsu as "Tom;" (3)Sen. Obama's classmates tell me that he is true blue American, not a radical Muslim.

Hooray for Mayor Bloomberg for standing up for what is right. He is a true American who has the courage to stand up for true American principles.

It's interesting how Mr. Bloomberg (once a Republican, once a Democrat and now an Independent) attempts to "choose" which candidate "best suits" his "wallet."

Mayor Bloomberg reminds me of a statement made by probably our greatest President.

"When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe." - Thomas Jefferson

Obama is a christian, like every other president of America. (Lincoln was half black, his mother was from Africa.) Get over it, this isn't the first black person in the White House. Obama is the better choice, and skin color shouldn't be an issue.

If you want more young American dead in the war, vote McSame!

If you want change, Vote Obama!

Hurray for Bloomberg.

Too many Jews - especially those with immigrant parents - too often have a siege mentality. And will believe demogogues.

Bloomberg is not 1st generation American. His priority is America and it's best interest...he apparently does NOT consider his first loyalty to be Israel.

Fortunately, he can be a voice of reason with Jews. I am grateful to him.

For those who actually care about facts, for an excellent point by point analysis of 50 so-called "lies" by Obama, see:

That said, it seems to me that a lot of people here have decided they hate Obama because he doesn't look like them, are happy to cling to any myth that helps support that, and the facts are mere inconveniences. Sad.

This is so ironic. Today while shopping at one of the Military base exchanges, a 6oish age Marine was speaking negative about Obama. He was sincere about McC telling about Obama owning 9 wives as a muslim, and that the USA would become something different if his opponent became President. Well this is the hype that JMcC would love to be discussed at all of these Military bases. There should be spokes people sending the true messages out to these military families about these candidates, not Lies and rumors. Let's get real.Get educated. This type nonsense only causes wasted votes.

Kudos to the mayor. Especially for pointing out what a typical, juvenile thing this is with the Republicans, citing the example of Bush's 2000 campaign.

But voters should "reject" the scurilous emails not so much because they are divisive (which they are), but because they insult the intelligence of those reading them.

Bloomberg was first a Democrat when Democrats were in the ascendency then a Republican when Republicans where in the ascendency, now he's for Obama since the media hate Hillary and McCain and love Obama. Given that Bloomberg reverses his loyalty as fast as a revolving door his support of Obama fits since Obama has just reneged on a promise to the American people in regard to public financing. If it talks like a rabbit, walks like a rabbit and acts like a rabbit then it's probably a hypocrite.
