Clinton Readies for Her Exit
By Dan Balz
Sen. Hillary Clinton is scheduled to bring her presidential campaign to an end, and the scene at the National Building Museum is one of controlled chaos.
Supporters are streaming in and there are lines outside dealing with the heat. Clinton staffers are handing out water. Press people say that, through the course of the campaign, there have never been as many TV cameras on the press riser for a single candidate event as are here this morning.
Clinton staffers, from headquarters and those who moved like nomads from state to state, have assembled for the last event of the campaign, exhausted and disappointed. Some plan beach time before they figure out the next phase of their careers.
The big question is what Clinton will say. No sign of her speech yet, to dismay of the TV folks, who are on live already. What will she say about Obama, about John McCain and about, as she put it Tuesday night, what she wants next?
