Indian Americans Take Note of Obama, Thanks to Hanuman

Hanuman

By Matthew Mosk
When it comes to American politicians, Bill Clinton has been the darling of India.

That love extended to Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primaries -- especially with respect to fundraising among Indian Americans, who grew to become a significant base of support for her White House bid.

But now a surprise revelation during an off-the-cuff exchange in Albuquerque, N.M., has turned Barack Obama into the talk of the Indian news media.

At a town hall meeting, a woman asked Obama what kept him grounded, and in response he emptied his pockets. "People are so generous to me, investing their hopes in me," he said, holding up a cupped hand full of trinkets. "This I usually don't show in these town hall meetings. I have all these things that people give me -- all these different little good luck charms."

One of the trinkets, it turns out, was a tiny figurine of Hanuman -- the Hindu monkey god.

"It's a big deal," said Bhavna Pandit, 28, a political fundraising consultant based in Washington who thinks the revelations will lead to new interest in Obama among Indian American donors.

Pandit said news of the Obama trinket has swept across Indian American living rooms and through Indian newspapers and TV networks. She said the people she knows as "aunties and uncles" -- women and men from her parents' generation -- are suddenly taking note of Obama in a way they had not done before. "They think it's kind of neat. They rarely see our religion played out in the mainstream media in America."

And, she said, "In India, they're like, 'Wow! The person who can be the president has a connection to us that's very personal.'"

this is a ridiculous psy-op...obama is about as much of a devotee of Hanuman as Osama bin Laden. Obama needs the support of the wealthy Hindu Americans thus this scam...Obama stopped the Protect Born Alive Infant Act from becoming law 5 times at the behest of the genocidal abortion lobby. Thus it is still legal in the USA to let born alive aborted babies to be killed or just left to die. No devotee of Hanuman would do this. People can be so naive. Its actions not gimmicks that decide the character of a person.

A few notes:

Maggie B: the State of Hawaii has produced an official paper birth certificate. Go jump in a lake. (Read, go ___ yourself, you sleazy ___)

Caesar Augustus: "So help me god" is not part of the oath of office, but rather a custom. Also, there is no requirement that it be taken on a bible, as there cannot be, because the CONSTITUTION FORBIDS RELIGIOUS TESTS, YOU _____ MORONS

Christina: You better hope John McCain saves that penny to give it to you, because after you cut off your nose to spite your face, and the Supreme Court is packed with anti-Roe judges who will give corporations everything they want while taking control of your body, the Republicans will totally bankrupt us, but I guess you can still get to feel smug and superior, even when you're poor and oppressed. Enjoy, you _______ _______.

And to the rest of the racist, xenophobic, _____ing embarrassments to our country, I take satisfaction in knowing that your lives are so miserable and empty that you can only derive a sense of worth through demeaning others who have done nothing but try to live their lives and contribute to our society. Enjoy your secret depression, those long nights weeping under the covers because you've done nothing with your life. Cheers!

Christianity is an inferior religion.

Let us support Obama for realizing that Hinduism, Buddhism and Bahaism etc are so much superior to Christianity.

Each American, at watershed moments in his or her life -- to get a driver's license, a marriage certificate, a passport -- must produce a paper birth certificate for official inspection and analysis. Now it's Obama's turn.

What is your point?

That he has a drivers license?

Passport?

Marriage Certificate?

He has all those things -- beyond doubt.

Plus - his identification as a United States Senator.

If he had to produce a birth certificate to get those things -- as your insist ---what is your point???

KJ,
As a white, middle aged woman I competely agree with you.
It's time for them to either grow up and get over it or go off and sulk. but, please quit annoying people with your rants and over wrought pity party.
I do believe this ceased being about Hillary a long time ago and more about themselves.
And excuse to wallow in self pity and the need for attention.
For them, their mantra is: It's all about me! me! me!"
Hillary is just something convienent to use in their need to demand people drop everything and pay attention to them.

KJ,
all this "I am woman hear me roar" bull is just that....bull. Women have been candidate for POTUS before HRC...and you didn't give those women the time of day, and now you feel some entitlement for Clinton? Why? Cut the "experience" crap, please...being the wife of a former president doesn't count....what is this "experience" that you speak of? Stop being sore losers and get over this melodramatic menopausal moment.

Alan's comment about Obama not talking about his past is laughable. The guy wrote a book about his past long before he had any chance to become president. If you want to disagree with Obama, that's fine but educate yourself so your arguments have some merit. We know more about Obama's past than we have probably ever known about a presidential candidate.
Look how many secrets there are in W's life story?
Do you know how McCain treated his first wife after she was in an auto accident and was no longer a beauty? Look into it, I used to respect the McCain but not so much anymore!

Disagree with Senator Obama on his positions, just as you may disagree with Senator McCain for his, but there is NO EXCUSE for blatant racism. You and the racist former Senator George Allen would get along pretty well, apparently.

I am dismayed and mysitfied by those who say Obama isn't "qualified" or "elecatble". Obama is OBVIOUSLY electable and he had 12 years of legislative experience - which is 4 more years than Hillary. I think it is horrible how hate has anything to do with being a woman. It wasn't Hillary's time - she should have ran in 2004. People ought to stop rehashing their outdated racism and start building a brighter future for all of our AMERICAN children.
No one stole anything from anyone this year - Obama won fair and square. He won over 30 states - Hillary won half that many.
I am for the winner and the right one for our country and that is Barack Obama.
Thanks for the story; it's nice to have support from around the one world we ALL live in.

I am extremely pleased to see that Senator Obama places due importance on these "trinkets". Regardless of what culture they come from, they come from an individual person who wishes him well, wishes him luck, and wishes for both his success and his help.

Just as a person smiles when a child gives them a dandelion. No one WANTS a dandelion. It is the act of giving something which is important to YOU to another person in order to help them or make them happy which should be revered.

The fact that Senator Obama keeps these reminders with him is both extremely touching and heartening, in a world where most politicians care about nothing but your vote or your money.

Indians (both kinds) need to line up for Obama... and they will. Among most in the South-Asian community, I would say the trinket thing is not that big a deal as much as a perceived fellow high tech kinda thing. Apu in your minds eye from the QuickiMart, reads and follows American politics very closely. They don't have as much of the first hand Nixon, Watergate, Carter, Ford pool to draw from but that too can be an asset.

While i agree with you that because of Obama's bi-racial background, (I wonder what his mother's heritage was?) he appeals to more racial and ethnic groups than the average person.

But i disagree with you in that the Obama's people and Obama are sugar coating the mess that 8 years of Bush-McCain have gotten us into, and the huge problems, and the difficulties it will still be if God willing he is elected. For example Obama''s supporters know we have to go into the dreaded Afghan-Pakistani border area and hunt down Osama bin laden.

Whoever is elected president will be getting a huge mess. Thank God, the "One God all the time," it looks like the democrats will increase their lead in the senate and house. And maybe get a veto proof majority, so that if McCain gets it, he will be able to be held more in check than his twin Bush.

If we are to believe Obama and his handlers, he has close personal ties to every political, ethnic and religious group on the planet. He is all things to all people...He is the wonder candidate who will solve all problems with a smile and a wave of the hand. Of course, this isn't true and thinking voter can see this. A political saying attributed to Lincoln has long alerted us to falling prey this kind of charlatanry: You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.

What is amazing to me is how many people believe crap like Alan. Alan if you would actually read real news reports you would know none of the crap you are spewing is true. There is a complete article in the Washington Post, Newsweek, on and on. Your misinformation is amazing. I'm not going to give you the facts because you wouldn't believe them anyway. I will say this though. People who are going to vote for McCain...when people voted for Bush, they voted for him because of the war and they thought he was so patriotic. Now look at our economy, our soldiers, health care and so on. George Bush has been a disaster, so if you voted for Bush stop complaining about anything, you did it to yourself and your about to do it again. Ignorance all around.

Also, in America, natively-born or immigrated to, we are just Americans. No prefixes, no suffixes, just Americans. It saves a lot of namby pamby meandering and reduces the chances of miscommunication.

Or is nationality no longer relevant?

Alan, since when are Kenya and Kansas our enemies? Or are you referring to Panama and John McCain? Obama's father is an African, not an Arab .... "Nationalisty", after all, refers to citizenship, not religion or ethnicity.

I truly do fear for this country and its future. Not because it's about to elect Obama or McCain but because the comments section of the Post these days reflects a nation full of ignorant xenophobes like Alan.

This is a sad day in america. When we are going to vote in a president of the same nationality of our enemies. But my main problem is that the media will not attack obama for some reason. Myself I think it is cause he is black and they are scared to.Also it is funny that you all vote for a guy that has only been in politics for 6 or 7 years. For some reason to he never wants to talk about his past anyone else find that funny. Beware America he is hiding something and it is big.

please Ms Pandit,Sen Obama was given these trinkets and I wouldn't be surprised if he did not know who Hanuman is.Let us not be too dumb to think this somehow connects Hindus to the senator. His policies and his abilities to bring change should bring Indians closer to the President, not a trinket. That's where Clintons proved themselves and are loved by Indians.

Hanuman represents like the Holy Spirit in Christianity, self-less service to God. Not a bad thing for a politician to aspire to. Better, i feel than worshiping the god of war.

I understand we have to bring to justice the perpetrators of the 9-11 attacks. I think of that more as a police action using our military people in a righteous way, than the debacle of war the Republicans Bush-McCain have cursed America with.

We should have just stayed on Osama's tail into the dangerous Afghan-Pakistani border area just as Hanuman burnt the kingdom of the evil-doer Ravana!

Instead we followed the worshipers of the god of war and our country now suffers from the Bush-McCain Folly!

Obama is unqualified and unelectable.

It's a political eternity until the end of August when the DNC holds the convention in Denver when the ACTUAL vote for the nominee takes place. Until then, let the long overdue vetting of Barack Obama finally begin. Anything can happen and most likely will. Let's hope for the total political implosion of Barack Obame BEFORE the Dems foolishly nominate him.

It's Hillary or McCain. Put your country first and party second.

The Democratic party must be held accountable for their failure to denounced the rampant sexism, racism, classism, and voter disenfranchisement continually interjected into this 2008 campaign debacle by Barack Obama, his campaign, his nasty supporters and ALL media. HIllary Clinton was villified 24/7 in ALL media and the DNC stood silent. In fact, the DNC is complicit indisenfranchising voters. It's unacceptable. To vote for Obama is to condone what he and the DNC have done. Don't do it.

The DNC understands two things, money and votes. WE have the power to with hold both. DO SO.

"You must do the thing which you think you cannot do" Eleanor Roosevelt

The MEDIA will NOT decide this election, the people WILL. The Obamarama has been a media driven illusion.
