Obama Highlights Rising Energy Costs

Updated 2:00 p.m.
By Glenn Kessler
WAYNE, Penn. -- Sen. Barack Obama today highlighted the rising cost of energy at a "green" middle school, promising at the town hall meeting to produce an energy plan as president that would reduce American dependence on foreign oil.

The presumptive Democratic nominee, noting that gas prices have risen in Pennsylvania by more than 33 cents in the past month, to above $4, said: "It isn't an accident that gas prices are this high. It's because Washington failed to deal with the challenge of alternative energy when it had the chance. Instead we've had an energy policy that's been written by and for the big oil and gas companies."

Obama said the problem went deeper than the Bush administration, reflecting a lack of political will stretching back to the oil shocks of the 1970s. "Nothing has changed," he said. "And when the next election rolls around, we're even more dependent on foreign oil, our planet is in even greater peril, and the price of gas is even higher."

The pristine middle school, set in one of Pennsylvania's most affluent counties, was completed only last year and is considered a "green" building because it features geothermal walls, a green roof, and geothermal heating and cooling. The builders sought to recycle at least 75 percent of waste produced during construction, according to information on the school's website.

Obama said he would invest $150 billion in promoting green technologies, which he claimed could help create 5 million new jobs.

The McCain campaign accused Obama of hypocrisy, noting he voted for an energy bill in 2005 stuffed with nearly $3 billion in tax breaks for the oil industry and backed by the Bush administration. "Only Barack Obama would rail against the very lobby-driven energy bill that he himself voted for," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Obama, at the time of his vote, said he backed it "reluctantly," mainly because it would help Illinois by including language that would double ethanol demand by 2012.

During the one-hour town meeting, Obama highlighted differences between his policies and those of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain on a range of issues, including health care, the war in Iraq and tax policy.

Obama broke no new policy ground during the session, but drew laughs when he asked whether anyone in the crowd made more than than $2.8 million. Though Radnor Township is along Pennsylvania's Main Line and has only a small percentage of families at the poverty level, the median income for a family here is almost $110,000.

An analysis of McCain's tax cut plan by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found than nearly 29 percent of his tax cuts would flow to individuals making more than $2.8 million. (Such taxpayers, the top one percent, tend to pay a significant proportion of overall income taxes.)

At a fundraiser Friday night in Philadelphia, Obama mentioned he had used that line earlier in the week in Wisconsin, adding: "I was going to say to them 'You should leave now because John McCain is the candidate for you.'"

At that point a wealthy female donor yelled out: "Hey, that's not fair!"

Sorry, God ain't gonna help us out of this one! The republicans are interested in nothing but sucking the life-blood out of this country by taking the tax base away from the people and giving it to the military-industrial complex. That's exactly why the Bush Crime Family and McCain wants this occupation to NEVER END. If we were actually headed for "peace", that would frighten the republican leadership, because their success is based on the fear of the close-minded, under-educated (like rep and proud) who would rather shoot than think for themselves. If it's not Iraq, it will be Iran, if not Iran, then the gays eating babies and DESTROYING marriage and families, if not that, then space aliens attacking. Great republican formula: scare the people - decimate government of the people - funnel trillions of dollars of taxes into the private military/industrial complex that "protects" us, while at the same time cutting/denying the fair pay and benefits to our enlisted and vets - then attack someone else based on lies and deception. Meh... what a country! War criminals.

That's a load of crap anyone who thinks the country is heading in the wrong direction is an America hating pessimist, the last 8 years have been great, the economy has been going strong, houses are more affordable then ever, and meanwhile we're establishing democracy in a region that's never known anything but tyranny! Anyone who still thinks there are problems can take it up with ME, I'll give them problems!

Republican and Proud: I think your comment shows who you really are, an ignorant racist! Why contribute such nonsense! At a time in our country when we should be celebrating our differences and coming together on National issues, people such as yourself always come up with a way to throw in a monkey wrench. Lucky for all of us, there are millions of Americans (this includes minorities of all backgrounds) are not as mentally bankrupt as you.

Obama is a mix-breed socialist who wants to take my money and give it to a bunch of prostitutes and drug addicts, otherwise known as minorities. Also if you want proof he's muslim just look at his family, all muslims. At least Mccain is white and proud, even though I won't be voting him because a liberal of a different fleece is still a liberal and they'll both try to turn this country back into the hellhole it was 10 years ago. We can't let that happen, write in a good decent conservative candidate this november, and tell those political fatcats what's what. I sure as hell ain't gonna tolerate president Jamal.

Obama not only voted for Cheney's pork barrel for the oil companies, otherwise known as the "2005 energy bill", he watered down another piece of legislation (one of the few bills he's actually worked on) to remove the requirement for nuclear companies to publicly disclose leaks. Turns out Exelon is one of his biggest contributors. For more on his as yet unreported background and connections, here's an article I've posted:

Marijuana can produce several different kinds of fuel. In the 1800's and 1900's hempseed oil was the primary source of fuel in the United States and was commonly used for lamps and other oil energy needs. The diesel engine was originally designed to run on marijuana oil because Rudolf Diesel assumed that it would be the most common fuel. Marijuana is also the most efficient plant for the production of methanol. It is estimated that, in one form or another, marijuana grown in the United States could provide up to ninety percent of the nation's entire energy needs.

Hemp is 4 times more efficient than corn as biofuel. Hemp pellets can be used to produce clean electricity.

... all people connected with or interested in improving the quality of life on our planet should be aware of it... so powerful it could replace every type of fossil fuel energy product (oil, coal, and natural gas).

... grow biomass (biologically produced matter). This plant is the earth's number one biomass resource or fastest growing annual plant for agriculture on a worldwide basis, producing up to 14 tons per acre. This is the only biomass source available that is capable of producing all the energy needs of the U.S. and the world...

Hemp will produce cleaner air and reduce greenhouse gases. When biomass fuel burns, it produces CO2 (the major cause of the greenhouse effect), the same as fossil fuel; but during the growth cycle of the plant, photosynthesis removes as much CO2 from the air as burning the biomass adds, so hemp actually cleans the atmosphere. After the first cycle there is no further loading to the atmosphere...

Folks, let's face it, this country needs new leadership and a new direction after 8 years of horrible leadership under the Bush administration. Let's put the reigns in the hands of Obama for 4 years and see if he can set the ship sailing straight. I think the wealthiest Americans should take a moment and think of their grandchildren, their communities, and yes, the stability of peace in the world and consider giving Obama a try for 4 years. 4 years goes by quickly you. We'll at least get some nice public works projects out of it and your kids will be able to afford going to college to better themselves and the world.

Obama "reluctantly" voted for the Bush/Cheney energy bill??? That is a big laugh. Both he and Senator Durbin were promised goodies for "ethanol" and "nuclear" to benefit Illinois... in other words they were bought off to the dismay of the majority of Democrats who were holding out for a much improved energy bill. (Notably, both McCain and Hillary voted against the Bush/Cheney bill)... And yet Obama continues to criticize McCain for supporting Bush energy policies??? What a freakin' hypocrite. The record shows that Obama (not McCain) is the Bush-like guy.

Here is another "hint" about the incompetency of Obama. When in Oregon campaigning for the Democratic primary he was asked about the Hanford cleanup. He did not even know what Hanford was (which also indicates he is clueless about the history of WWII and nuclear weapons). Interestingly, both McCain and Hillary had already promised to make sure that the Hanford cleanup continues and will be funded. Maybe Obama should have been paying attention to the words of his opponents.

Further, Obama says he supports nuclear energy... and then he does not support nuclear energy... but then he may support nuclear energy.... and that he supports the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump... but then he does not support Yucca Mountain... and he does not know anything about Hanford, (which was at one time on the list for the federal nuclear waste dump.)

And that David Axelrod was a consultant for Exelon --the largest nuclear operator in the United States with a big presence in Illinois. And that the Obama campaign has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Excelon CEO, managers, and employees... a form of bundling money so that it does not appear to be coming from corporations. And that the Obama campaign has also received large amounts of money from the oil industry.

So do you really trust... Someone who says one thing but all of his actions indicate the opposite?... Someone who takes money from large energy corporations and says he does not?... Someone who switches positions monthly and sometimes weekly depending on his audience?. Someone who attacks other candidates for what he himself did?...Someone who voted for the Bush/Energy bill.

I emphasize here... McCain was NOT the one who voted for the Bush/Cheney energy bill. Obama betrayed the Senate Democrats and went over to the dark side of Corporate Big Oil. They help fund his campaign. Do you really want to trust the Big Fat Liar... aka Obama?

OBAMA is a Trojan Horse! But before I go into that, I want to address these idiots about WWII. The world is extremely lucky that the Kamikaze Japanese attacked the U.S. Please refer to www.luft46.com . You will see Hitler's plan for America and the technology the U.S. obtained from the NAZIs. The Japanese would "stop at nothing" to kill all Americans, even though we were a neutral country at the time. The Japanese emperor (yes, Japan was not as civilized back then; it was basically communist) actually knew that only America had the power to stop the Germans and feared us. Ironically thank god, Japan attacked us and pulled us into the war. In 1946, Hitler's plan to kill America would have done just that. We had to do what we did to stop all efforts at ending democracy and freedom for all human beings. The Japanese would not stop... "God Bless America!"
In reference to the "race card", I actually out of mere curiosity looked up African American billionaires to see Business experience. I found that they as a whole race had only 4 Billionaires in U.S. history. Actually a Black Wo-MAN (Oprah Winfrey - Talk show host) had more money than any black "man" for 3 years running, but what I found is that Blacks have NEVER had a Multi-Billionaire in U.S. history. It scared me because the U.S.A. is a Multi-Trillion dollar country (business)!!! Obviously white little "boys" don't know anything about real money and Fifty (No Sense) Cent knows everything, much like many ENTERTAINMENT welfarians (Compared to Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, etc...). They don't know anything about Real Money and Real Business. Bottom-line blacks have not advanced into real business (Freedom of FREE ENTERPRISE) enough for any of them to run a Multi-Trillion Dollar Country... (What about in Africa? Why does the U.S. still contribute 50% of world wide food money? Why can't Africa have more 1st world countries? Why don't the Blacks take care of their own? Obama wants to Increase the Welfare Program and have a mandate for Health Care for Children so American taxpayers can pay for the children who don't have a responsible "MAN" in their lives. Please take a look at which race has the most children in adoption programs.)
OK Back to Religion, The United Church of ANTI-CHRIST in Chicago, where Obama attended for over 20 years, which by the way America, every year has 52 Sundays! Do the math! (20 years x 52 Sundays = 1,040 Anti-Christ Sermons!) WOW! And whites invented Aids but forgot to invent the cure! (Is Aids just a Black Disease? Um NO, we also forgot to make it racially specific, I personally have taken credit for Hurricanes.) Obama is simply acting like he is pro-american, but in truth his unforgiving and everlasting hate rivals Satan's himself. Reverend Wright/Obama's beliefs are simply insane! (The Wright Voting law should go into effect, where Voters can change their vote even after they've already voted because they should have the power to change their mind until the DNC.) "God will not hesitate to throw Satan out of Heaven, don't you ever, ever forget it!" Can the world imagine if Americans didn't help so many people?!?! Imagine it!
Spike Lee's comments to Clint Eastwood were ridiculous. Obama and Lee are simply successful in one aspect and that is to rehash a lot of old hate. "IF" we have another civil war in America, it will be called "The War of the Free". If Satan thinks he's better than God, then God will be more than happy to show him the door... The truth is, as all know, is that Blacks have not always been this advanced. Recently I viewed a show on the Discovery Channel where a Black "Man" invented Irrigation in Africa in 2007.
On to "Change we can Believe in." = "Change you can Xerox!" Wasn't it Hillary Clinton and the Clintons who taxed people over $250,000.00/year incomes? Um YES! So Obama got out his trusty Thesaurus and "changed the wording" but forgot to change the income amount. Payroll Taxes and Taxing people with over $250,000.00/year incomes is the same thing! Also, the DNC does NOT require candidates to report donors (campaign contributors) under $200.00. So Obama kept a list of all of these donors and literally bribed super delegates with his list. So when these Democrats go for re-election they have a fresh list of donors to once again loyally contribute.

In closing I want to say MCCAIN/CLINTON 2008. It's time for a Bi-Partisan Ticket, a Strong President with an economical genius VP (Clinton). The last time the U.S. had a Bi-Partisan ticket was Lincoln's 2nd term.

I'm not a racist. I am merely a REALIST, this is REALISM, do NOT mistake it for anything else...

Delegate's reversal stuns party
Wisconsin Democrat now publicly supports McCain
By CRAIG GILBERT

Washington - As an avid supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primaries, Debra Bartoshevich is not alone in her frustration over Clinton's defeat.

She's not alone in refusing to support Barack Obama.

And she's not entirely alone in saying she'll vote this fall for Republican John McCain instead.

But what makes her unusual is that she holds these views as an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this summer.

"I'm sure people are going to be upset with me," said Bartoshevich, a 41-year-old emergency room nurse from Waterford in Racine County, and convention delegate pledged to Clinton.

Joe Wineke, chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, reacted with disbelief when first told Friday afternoon that one of his state party delegates is now a McCain supporter.

"Not a delegate? To the national convention?" said Wineke, who was getting ready for the start of the Wisconsin state party convention Friday in Stevens Point.

"We have a Clinton national (convention) delegate who says she's voting for John McCain?" Wineke repeated, for clarification. "I've never heard of such a thing."

No American President can solve the high gas problem. To solve this problem all parties including oil companies and countries producing oil will need to come to some solution in bringing the gas prices down. Maybe, the United States need to produce oil thru other means.

I wish Obama would get even tougher on this: George Bush made his energy "savvy" a centerpiece of his 2000 campaign -- he was supposed to be able to keep those Saudis in line providing cheap oil, lol. Obama should point out howw the Iraq war profiteers have included major energy firms with connections to the Bush/Cheney crime family (not to mention the exorbitant amount of gas required to run the military vehicles, helicopters and planes in Iraq -- thousands of gallons for one trip). I hope he hammers this stuff home.

Here's how it works:

The president sends a budget to Congress. The budget describes what the president wants to do, which is described in his platform. The platform is what Obama and McCain talk about if they have time over after bashing one another and distorting each other's statements.

Voters make a choice by weighing information from their parent's political views, what they hear in the bashing, and what they don't believe about the platforms.

Bob-The questions you beg, are what has me the most concerned.

Yes, it does indeed seem like some Powerful Players have so much control, that THEY are now destroying Decades of stability in Billion's of people's lives, while they try to Tweek the System to find out just how much they can get away with.

The Saddest part of all, is the freaking Spin-Jobs being used to somehow JUSTIFY it!

"People still have not reduced, how much higher before they do-Because that is a solution to demand for the Product needed to try to earn Money to pay for more gas" seems to come from the same deranged Mindset of a Speed or Coke-Head!

"Need Coke to work so I can buy some coke so I can work to be able to buy Coke so I can work to buy some more Coke so..."

Followed by: "Well, now we have gotten People to switch to smaller cars! Yeah! Getting those Gas prices up there was a great solution!", which, is also very much a "Tough Love" approach!

The rationalizations for the fact a single Product has been allowed to dominate all the receivables available, is NOT what I want to be hearing!

Something more along the lines of: Gas was too cheap, but now due to problems with a Commodities market, it has been allowed to get way out of hand-We are Correction the Problems!-Is more to my liking!

We have the technology to reduce or even eliminate our dependence on oil imports. Undeveloped/underdeveloped petroleum reserves (ANWR/OCS/Oil Shale/Coal) and alternative energy resources (Solar, Wind, Tide, Nuclear) in unison could provide enough energy to kick OPEC to the curb.

At some point, the alternatives to importing oil become economically feasible. The question is, how high will the cost of a barrel of imported oil have to go ($150, $200, $250...), before action will commence? Or from the standpoint of gasoline prices at the pump, is $5.00 a gallon the magic number, or $10.00 or?

Perhaps the impetus to move forward will be provided when radical environmentalists have to start walking to their conventions and rallies?

No see the funny thing here is that by all Americans you mean the ones who aren't rich right? Why should the rich pay such a huge amount of taxes? You act like they should be sorry about the fact that they've made some money.

And you know taxing the oil companies is not a good way to lower the price of oil. I would bet that the more you tax them the more they raise the price. That's what any intelligent business owner would do.

Bush said the US is addicted to oil, put money in research and set a date as a goal for the US to cut the addiction. It's the media job to dig into Obama's and McCain's records to see what they have done to reduce the foreign oil dependency. Use the same strict standard used on Bush on McCain and Obama. The media needs to inform voters. Candidates can talk but show us what candidates have done. Thanks.

So when do we get details about the Great Senator Obama's energy plans?

All I have heard from him for months are vague platitudes about "energy independence" and "devote x dollars to green tech and jobs".

Ok, never mind that government is notoriously inefficient at creating jobs that actually produce anything AND that dollar estimates from politicians usually turn out to be grossly understated

BUT what kind of policy is this? What proof that his plan is even viable? How long would it take to reduce dependence on oil (foreign or otherwise)? What kinds of green tech and jobs? How does he plan to fund these programs? What if the dollar amount quoted is insufficient?

We don't need to develop "clean", "green", "renewable" energy. It is already out there and more than a handful of countries are way ahead of us on energy policy. Let's put aside our arrogance and ignorance and see what those countries are doing. We might learn something.

I love this country, but we are falling behind and the blame rests solely with us for voting in such buttheads.

Sinner- Sorry, I have another Conundrum for you:

IF, as you say, the Dollar is sooo weak, WHY does it ONLY seem to be Oil that is affected.

See, if by your logic the Dollar has devalued so much, that Real Estate in say San Diego(Thinking of moving back to myself), has already dropped over 30%(Which erases a larger % rise!), then another 40% decrease of the US Dollar, would make what was a Million Dollar home in 2005, reduced first 30%($700,000), is now comparably worth($ Devaluation-Gas Vs. Home) @ $400,000!

But, as mentioned, Try to rebuild it for that!

BOHICA America! BOHICA or Keep SENATORS OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE! Both sorry choices are JUST THAT!

THEY, have BOTH, been the Problem!

Just be sure to save a chorus or two for the Congress, INCLUDING the last two Years of Ninny and Hair-brain! See, Bushie had had a lot of help.

Yes you are right about the devalued Dollar. It has made it even harder for Americans and others that rely on our Dollar. IF, the inflation was due to American Companies and American Workers rising, instead of taking the Beating, I could accept it.

However, we have allowed a Hostile Invasion of Wage Competing Neighbors(Just that, NOT Immigrants-Neighbors barging in, to take what they want before going Home(Retire)), to get Jobs CRIMINAL EMPLOYERS have been ALLOWED-Nay-ENCOURAGED, to offer DESTROYING Blue Collar Wage Levels to 1970's levels!(And DROPPING!)

Ron Paul never did get his chance to abolish the IRS, but his hilarious cranky old man antics certainly did abolish a little bit of the sadness in all our lives. Let's take a look back at the magical year we shared together: http://www.236.com/news/2008/06/13/ron_paul_breaks_the_hearts_of_7131.php

Saint, listen dingbat.

40% of the increase in gas price is due to the devalued dollar. The dollar itself got devalued due to national debt, which has been excerbated by the expensive war and the tax cuts to the rich.

Another 20-30% is directly attributable to the rise in oil company profits.

OPEC is probably responsible for 10 to 30% of the high prices and they blame the supply and demand equation for that.

All a bunch of crooks including W and the neocons who promised us $18/barrel gas after the invasion of Iraq.

Saint, you dinglehopper! President can't spend a penny? Say that to George W. The President has several discretionary funds and sets the direction to the congress on funding priorities. Quibbling on trifles does no one any good here.

Earth to self-sanctified morons: Presidents are important!

Correction-I meant to say Sovereign Lenders of Oil Wealthy "COUNTRY'S".

Same ones who are getting even wealthier while they increase their market price for their main Export!

Soooooo;

"Obama said he would invest $150 billion in promoting green technologies, which he claimed could help create 5 million new jobs."

Seems this Junior Senator is planning to try something real quick before he possibly gets into the Executive Branch.

Earth to O'Bombanation, Earth to O'Bombanation;

the PRESIDENT, can't spend a Penny! Congress Legislates and Funds.

But wait, I forgot, he has not been in Congress long enough to have learned that yet!

My Bad! ;~)

Idsrapha, McSame knows he is history if people know that his tax cuts benefit mostly the wealthy and Obama's benefit the middle class. So he and his circle of lobbyists will try their best to spread misinformation.

I suggest the taxcuts info be added to http://www.fightthesmears.com

How do you fight 2 wars and cut taxes?

Actually O'Bombanation, it is the Commodities Broker's SPECULATIONS.

Try to keep up; Sovereign Lenders of Oil Wealthy Companies, go into US Markets and buy up their own futures!

Yeah, it is a Bubble, but one they are in complete control of.

Oil Futures were fairly recently added. It is WAAAYYYY Past time for them to be immediately removed/ and /or REGULATED!

Monopolizing Markets and Price Fixing are things a President SHOULD have the Economic abilities to prevent from occurring.

It's the Job. It's called enforcing the Laws of the Nation as declared the duty by the Constitution.

Along with things like Immigration Control and Federal Labor Laws.

Neither Presidential Candidate, or the Moron we currently have, seem to have a Clue!

I know that I don't make 2.8 million a year. Hmm, I guess I will have to vote OBAMA!!! The way in which John McCain openly fabricates and tries to portray Obama as a tax and spend liberal, is going to backfire. He is insulting the American intelligence with this rhetoric. All you have to do is read both their tax plans to realize who is looking out for all Americans and who is trying to pay back his wealthy lobbyists and special interests.
