Obama Will Travel to Europe and Middle East

By Jonathan Weisman
Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama said this morning he will travel to Europe and the Middle East in the coming weeks, a trip that is expected to include a detour to Iraq -- although that was not announced.

"This trip will be an important opportunity for me to assess the situation in countries that are critical to American national security, and to consult with some of our closest friends and allies about the common challenges we face," said Obama. "Israel is a strong and close friend of the United States, and is confronting grave threats from Gaza to Tehran. Jordan has been a close partner in the peace process and a host of other issues of common concern. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are key anchors of the transatlantic alliance and have contributed to the mission in Afghanistan, and I look forward to discussing how we can strengthen our partnership in the years to come. This will be an important opportunity to have an exchange of views with leaders in these countries about these and other issues that are critical to American national security -- and global security -- in the 21st century."

The exact dates of the trip were not divulged for security purposes. Campaign officials said only that it will be later this summer. He last traveled to Iraq in January, 2006 as part of a congressional delegation. Obama also made a visit to Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Saturday to meet with wounded veterans.

For weeks, Republican presumptive nominee John McCain and the Republican National Committee have goaded Obama to visit Iraq, insisting the conditions he would find there would be markedly more peaceful than what he saw on his last trip, two years ago. If the senator from Illinois does go to the war zone, the trip is not likely to be divulged until he is actually there.

But the trip to Europe is likely to be spectacle enough. The continent is gripped with Obamamania.

Just saw a news report where McCain says he would like to show Obama around Iraq and explain things to him. Wonder if it would be a little shopping spree in a market with all the troops, helicopters, sharpshooters around so McCain can say how safe it is!

pelikan - You talk about my writing style and you write this mess. Learn to use punctuation and capitalization you buffoon.

Pelikan, Mike, and Sequoia - Try getting a prescription for some testosterone. One of the problems with the country today is that many men are becoming little lilly livered fairies that like to play around with each others bungholes. If you take some male hormone there is at least a chance that you will become real men and learn that life is not a bowl of cherries. There are evil people in the world that can only be dealt with using force and might. Someone who says "death to Israel" or "death to America" or "the holocaust didn't happen" is not going to sit down and discuss things civilly. They're going to try to get concessions from the US and then they are going to keep doing what they want to do. Islamofascists will never stop until they drive all of the Jews out of Israel, even if that takes a nuclear explosion. Their religion does not allow any land that was once under Muslim control to revert back to infidels. Israel is their first goal. Then it will be Spain which Islam once controlled. Once they capture Spain, they will begin on Europe. I know you don't want to hear all of this because all you want to do is take your drugs and find your next butthole to play with.

And, by the way, you leftist idiots calling me stupid makes me laugh. The smartest one of you probably has a double digit IQ.

_____________

I'll ignore your ignorant and homophobic opening, even though it says everything about your backwards and anachronistic worldview.

John McCain hasn't got a clue. He only sees the world through the twisted prism of war, and even then he doesn't know how many troops are in Iraq, he doesn't know the difference between Sunni and Shia and what that means for Iraq, Iran and al Qaeda. He insists we have to put missiles in Czechoslovakia - a country that hasn't even existed for, oh...20 years or so. Even my 7-year old nephew can name the countries of Europe! I absolutely do not trust somebody so completely clueless about the world to be Commander-in-Chief.

John McCain mocks Obama for his openness to diplomacy, but we reject more of Bush's disastrous foreign "policy". Over 70% of Americans understand the importance of diplomacy and back Obama's approach over McCain's war, war, war, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran. Last week's developments in North Korea prove that diplomacy works, and not talking to our enemies only weakens us and strengthens them. More of the same? No thanks.

McCain may be more "experienced" at being bought and sold by lobbyists, lying to the American people, being wrong and pathologically stubborn about every issue and pandering, but I trust Obama. He's very smart, forward thinking and he has a reality-based worldview that isn't in the "dustbin of history" like idiotic neo-con ideology that has weakened us so badly. McCain promises more. No thanks.

Obama is the one.

Simmons my boy. Sweet effeminate, gentle little leftist Simmons. What do you know about politics? What do you know about anything? You think you're smart? I bet not. I deal with Phd scientists and engineers from around the world on a daily basis. Most of these Phds. are smart enough to know that Obama is an empty suit. No experience doing anything. Bush is a moron, but at least he ran some businesses and was Governor of a state before he ran for President. BHO has done nothing. He basically instructed the non-working how they can get more free goodies from the government by complaining more.

BHO has no experience whatsoever in any type of executive position. He is basically a loud-mouthed know-nothing leftist like yourself. He's great at giving prepared speeches but, as far as we know, nothing else.

That's why young people like him and older, wiser people don't. Young people think speaking ability is a direct indicator or your intelligence level. As you get older, wiser, and more experienced, you begin to realize that speaking ability tells you very little about how smart someone is or how effective they will be at a particular task.

I first learned this lesson the first year of law school when a visiting professor told us "You know all of the students in your class that are always raising their hands and answering questions and speaking out in class. I guarantee that most of them will be near the bottom of the class when you graduate." With possibly one exception, he hit the nail on the head. All the loud mouths were at the bottom of the class at graduation. This is because speaking is essentially a slow brain activity. People whose brains operate at the normal speaking speed (which is very low) invariably like to speak and make the best speakers. People who think much faster (or on another plane), have a harder time translating their thoughts into words. Einstein was notorious for this problem.

The problem is, less intelligent people, or simply young people who have no practical experience, take a good speaker as being really smart and a bad speaker as being dumb. I'm not saying a poor speaker is always smart (I don't think GWB is smart), but I am saying that a poor speaker can be very smart (Einstein) and a good speaker can be really, really dumb.

Unfortunately, we don't know if BHO is smart or dumb because he got into school under affirmative action and because he has no accomplishments whatsoever that we can use to gauge him. Rabble rousing, going to a racist church, and sitting on some left wing board with wild Billy Ayers, the mad bomber are not accomplishments.

And, by the way, I have a 150+ IQ.

And to the turd that posted under my name at 11:34PM (probably Simmons who is also probably Eurorant), please don't do that again.

Has anyone thought about the following scenario?

Obama becomes president next year. Violence breaks out everywhere in Iraq and US casualties climb at an alarming rate. The carnage shows no signs of slowing down. Two choices are in front of Obama. Pull our troops out as he has been promising us and let history record that a group of armed thugs can defeat the only superpower on earth. Or stay and fight, risk alarming casualties, and risk massive anti-war protests. What now, Obama? In this scenario, it is hard not to be a hypocrite.

How much trust can we put in a man like Obama when he shows in recent weeks that his words and promises can be changed at a whim, because it does not suit him? Zero. There is nothing more valuable than keeping your word. Failing to keep his word, especially when so many people believe in him, demonstrates that he cannot commit to anything. It appears that we can trust Obama to go back on his word and promises. Now, that is change we can all believe in. "Yes, we can!"

Posted by: John | June 30, 2008 2:14 AM | Report abuse

If you read the news recently, like I have, you will see that Obama is moving from the Left to the Rights. So I really question Obama's core principles. Is Obama being true to the Democratic ideals? Or does he value winning more? His last three positions are very troubling, and I am becoming less enthusiastic about supporting Obama, starting this past month. Change should be about the way Washington gets things done for the American people. Change isn't about Obama changing his mind or reneging his promises to the American people.

Harvey, there you go again with your slanders and obvious wrong facts. How dumb do you think America is? The people as a whole are certainly not as dumb as the Republican party.

You also wrote: "And, by the way, I wasn't comparing Osama, I mean Obama, to Bush. What the hell does Bush have to do with it? And Obama only got into those schools because of affirmative action, not merit. If the guy doesn't have a teleprompter in front of him he sounds like a stammering imbecile."

This is the funniest thing yet. Of course everybody knows that Bush got into his schools because of his father, not merit. And everybody knows that Bush talks like a stammering imbecile. Hey, do yourself a favor and educate yourself. Read one of Obama's books and then tell me he is an idiot. Look at his background and then try to tell me he is an idiot. You silly Repubs are making a lot of noise with nothing to back it up. You are like the stupid kid in 5th grade who always raised his hand and tried to answer the teacher's question thinking he knew everything but really he knows nothing and everybody else in the class sees that. Eurorant - In answer to your question, (1) the one who isn't a socialist, (2) the one who didn't spend 20 years in a black liberation theology church, (3) the one that doesn't count among his friends a Marxist terrorist (Ayers) and a crazy racist Muslim minister (Farrakhan), (4) the one whose wife is proud to be an American, (5) the one who served his country in time of war, and (6) the one who isn't sickened by the concept of capitalism.

And, by the way, I wasn't comparing Osama, I mean Obama, to Bush. What the hell does Bush have to do with it? And Obama only got into those schools because of affirmative action, not merit. If the guy doesn't have a teleprompter in front of him he sounds like a stammering imbecile.

The way you get a good president is by analyzing their achievements. As Obama doesn't have any achievements, there is nothing to analyze. The ability to give a good speech is not a reason to vote for someone for the most powerful position on earth. Especially when that person's list of friends includes some of the most anti-American hate mongers in the country. Put that in your teapot dome and smoke it (I assume you smoke pot as you are a leftist.)

Posted by: Harvey | June 29, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Suppose you had to choose between two Presidential candidates, one of whom had spent 20 years in Congress plus had considerable other relevant experience and the other of whom had about half a dozen years in the Illinois state legislature and 2 years in Congress. Which one do you think would make a better President?

If you chose #1, congratulations, you picked James Buchanan over Abraham Lincoln. Your pick disagrees with that of most historians, who see Lincoln as the greatest President ever and Buchanan as the second worst ever, better only than Warren 'Teapot Dome' Harding.

Honestly 'Harvey', until you said, "because he's black" - I thought you were describing Lincoln. But really are you trying to seriously compare this present sitting imbecile in the Oval Office with Obama, an honoured Columbia University and Harvard Law School graduate.

I believe we are all about to be pleasantly surprised about how well and how far President Obama will take this nation ... but sadly when history is written about this era, some of us will recall it all as playing the sad role of a stumbling block.

This has got to be the first time someone has gone from inner city rabble rouser to nominee for a major political party in US history. Imagine, someone who hasn't accomplished anything in his life, except maybe win a couple of elections because he's black (in the manner of Marion Barry), becoming POTUS. No military experience, no foreign affairs experience, no economic experience, no management experience, nothing. He's never even held a real job. Add to that the fact that he's spent twenty years at the church of a radical racist lunatic. The fact that this man may win the presidency is downright scary. It is indicative of the purposeful dumbing down of America.

We could have made him our puppet with very little problem and had control in the area without firing a shot. When it comes to places like that you want puppet dictators.

As an exPat living & working abroad in Europe some 16+ years ... I can not even begin to describe the buzz and excitement on the streets of major European cities since Senator Obama clinched the nomination. Newspapers and News Magazines are full of Obama fever ...
The major stories carry mainly his qualifications, his education, whole magazines devoted to his teachings and papers on Constitutional law when at University and the type of bills/laws passed and introduced as a state (IL) and US Senator.

I watched a hour and a half interview - discussion programme on the BBC last week devoted entirely to Obama's education as a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School and his impeccable record as a statesman.

Honestly I am not really that familiar with his family, religious or background, and like my friends here but at this point compared to the present imbecile you have elected twice ... from what Europeans have learned about Senator Obama we are hoping that perhaps America can once again hold it's head high by doing the right thing. The world is holding its breathe.

I promise that if Senator Obama were to show up here there would be such a fanfare and all-out excitement ... America would perhaps find itself too embarrassed not to elect someone already so well loved and lifting your country back to it's rightful and respectful place in the world.

The land of Islam will welcome Obama with open arms. They love him. It would be delightful if he would just stay there. We do not need him in this country. But he will come back. He definitly knows which side his bread is buttered on, and he will keep changing his strategy to suit what is best for Obama from day to day.

If Obama brings our troops home from Iraq as he has been promising to millions of his supporters, it is almost certain that there will be a bloodbath in Iraq. Without our troops, there will be no one there strong enough to protect the innocent people of Iraq from the terrorists. The Iraqis will be enslaved by the terrorists. We have a moral obligation to finish the job right in Iraq. If the massacre happens after we leave, we will lose all credibility in the international community. Because we let it happen. The war might even be brought to our cities and streets by sympathizers.

It was wrong to for us to be in Iraq in the first place. But that is not the main point anymore. It is BEYOND wrong to leave Iraq now. It is possibly a crime.

Obama is a politician. He knows that he will flip flop on this issue. But he will not admit it now. He'll eventually have to deal with MoveOn.org and CODEPINK.

I am glad Sen. Obama is going abroad on these trips. I think it will be a good experience for the American people to see Obama deal with foreign policy. He should get an enthusiastic reception because he is the anti Bush.

I hope people can see these two men as people who might desire the power and glory that comes with the White House, but I also believe that they both want to change America for the better. Let's stop spiting venom and instead become a possitive part of this wonderful Democatic process.

Most of you don't even have the guts to post your name when you speak your hatred and lies about Senator Obama.

He is going to draw huge crowds when he visits Europe. Read it and weep, he will be our next President.

Re: Senator Obama's List

I urge Senator Obama to visit North Korea, China, and Russia as well to learn how multilateral diplomacy works in Asia.

Your travel list shows that you have no clue how to protect America from the terrorists: You have to visit South Korea and Japan first.

Actually, quite a sizeable minority of the military seems to support Mr. Obama. The military generally like politicians who support them and they espeically like those who do not send them off to perform a fool's errand.

Evidence for this can be found in the numbers of retired military leadership who end up supporting the Democratic candidate - or run for office themselves as Democratic candidates.

To be sure, a majority are conservative - and Republican -- but they are not a huge majority. It may be that as the internet permits more access to communication about social issues to penetrate the day-to-day lives of the military - as opposed to hearing the "truth" as was interpreted by the chain-of-command, the military will begin to reflect the political spectrum of the country.

With 82% of the nation now agreeing that our country is on the WRONG track - the military may be more reflective of a general feeling that the current administration and its Cabinet officers are totally clueless about everything from global warming to the G.I. Bill.

You should die and rot in hell which I am certain you will. Although I suspect your personal life is such you live a hell on earth already.

Obama visiting US troops will look as silly and fake as John Kerry on a duck hunt.

Obama is not fit to be Commander-and-Chief. With a little luck, he will run over a mine while in the combat zone. I am sure the terrorist will be upset to loose such a brother to their cause.

Jay, he said he would meet with Raul Castro after he became president. Right now, as a senator I doubt he can do that.

The article says that Europe is gripped in obama fever. Exactly how is it going to be a spectacle. He goes in and sees some of the leaders. I doubt much more will go on then that. Pretty much how any overseas trip by a US politician is.
