On the Way to Unity

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton talk on the plane on their way to the Unity rally in Unity, N.H. (Linda Davidson / The Washington Post)

By Shailagh Murray
Unity Friday began just after 9 a.m. with the arrival of Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton at Reagan National Airport. Obama's gas-guzzling SUV pulled up first with his much larger entourage -- although Secret Service agents appeared to outnumber staff.

The two candidates embraced on the tarmac and Obama followed Clinton up the stairs, perhaps remarking about his new campaign plane -- her old Midwest Airlines MD-80. They sat together in seats 2 A and B.

Cheerios and blueberries are on the breakfast menu. Clinton is wearing peacock blue.

It concerns me as a Canadian. I thought America was built by true Americans of all cultures. Let us not for get the Blacks, which I say with the greatest respect, the natives the same, so many people built your Country. Yet you speak about latinos as if they control your country? You are going no where faster than you think. From Ameri-Canada united, and don't forget that. Why can't you impeach Bush. The reason is, your politics will never change. Feel a little sorry for all of us.

Barf - comments like this is why I will not vote for Obama. David and his ilk need to GROW UP.

You have to be crazy to think that what Hillary faced in the primaries was worse than Obama. The Wright issue was made into a big deal because of racism, seeing as the crazy white pastors involved in politics continually get ignored. And can you imagine Fox News referring to another candidate's wife as his "baby mama"? That's just outright racism right there. If you vote for McCain, you were never a Hillary supporter in the first place. He stands against everything she stood for.

I think this was a cheesy exercise both of them had to go through - she needs money and to protect her political future, he needs to support her in her debt relief efforts and continue winning graciously.

Now that the political theatre has been accomplished, I think you will only see the Clintons sporadically, maybe more after Labor Day, but not much all in all.

I will be happy to return to the issues of the General Election and the task at hand: beating John McCain.

Obama's position to talk to our enemies in Iran without preconditions is causing a lot of headaches for the Europeans who have worked so hard to build up pressure to get Iran to stop its nuclear program. Obama is naive in international affairs. He did not foresee this problem. An Obama presidency will be a self-defeating presidency in international affairs, and it will bear witness to an emerging European superpower.

Unity? Hell, no. There is no unity here. Hillary is still the same angry menopausal woman she was, but the real sign of the lack of unity was the absence of Bill who is off in Europe somewhere sulking. We Democrats have to wake up the the ugly reality of the Clintons and keep our eyes on the ball which means ensuring that Senator Obama gets elected. Hillary will remain superficially supportive only because she wants to hang on to her Senate seat. Let us not be fooled. Obama defeated her and he will more than defeat McCain in November. Then we can get about the serious business of rebuilding our country which the Republicans and Bushes first stole and then tried to destroy. We are stronger than they are, so, in the end they will lose.

Obama is unqualified and unelectable.

It's a political eternity until the end of August when the DNC holds the convention in Denver when the ACTUAL vote for the nominee takes place. Until then, let the long overdue vetting of Barack Obama finally begin. Anything can happen and most likely will. Let's hope for the total political implosion of Barack Obame BEFORE the Dems foolishly nominate him.

It's Hillary or McCain. Put your country first and party second.

The Democratic party must be held accountable for their failure to denounced the rampant sexism, racism, classism, and voter disenfranchisement continually interjected into this 2008 campaign debacle by Barack Obama, his campaign, his nasty supporters and ALL media. HIllary Clinton was villified 24/7 in ALL media and the DNC stood silent. In fact, the DNC is complicit indisenfranchising voters. It's unacceptable. To vote for Obama is to condone what he and the DNC have done. Don't do it.

The DNC understands two things, money and votes. WE have the power to with hold both. DO SO.

"You must do the thing which you think you cannot do" Eleanor Roosevelt

The MEDIA will NOT decide this election, the people WILL. The Obamarama has been a media driven illusion.

Poor Obama. He still thinks he needs to suck up to white elderly women. No Hillary no vote and no money.

People are forgetting that in the past the psychology of active campaign workers was satisfied at the convention with marching, demonstrations and long hours. Bu the time the candidate had been selected, enough energy had been expended that compromises could be made and real support given to the candidate. Bu deciding to reduce the importance of the Convention, this year the activist will not get the full emotional and physical experience and may return home with doubts and dissatisfaction.

It was a mistake to do away with the Convention - it was more than a photo op. It was an experience. And for many - a very important experience.

If you've ever been around Washington, you know the composition of these motorcades. Big black cars and SUVs. Needed when you have a lot of people and equipment to haul.

I have no beef with a large group using an SUV. If you will, it's not gas/mile. It's gas/person/mile. 3 people carpooling in an Escalade is about as energy efficient as a solo Prius.

reporter: Tells us what they had for breakfast.

Why is this important? Because the readers who are Clinton "fans" are women who fell in love with her during her "First Lady" time and they really want to know all these little personal tidbits and they dont care about the World Trade Organization at all.

First Ladies smile, share recipes and give us the mom's perspective on choosing staff and why Chelsea went to Stanford, and not Yale like mom, dad and the Bush's.

First Lady fans ALWAYS really want to know what the First Family had for breakfast.

There is never any interest in 'issues' among first lady fans, which is why there was so much angst about whether they would now vote for McCain although McCain opposes nearly every position SENATOR Clinton has on the issues.

Happy laughs folks. Good luck finding any hard news from Ms Murray, about Clinton, ever.

Boy did that "Obama's gas guzzler" pop out--glad it wasn't just me. I guess McCain & Clintons suv's are environmentally friendly?

Fool. She is a greenie ultra liberal tree hugger. Murray probably has a motorbike and a Prius, composts her own waste products, and has a $30 a day coffee budget for Starbucks.

Usually, most digniatries/people who have Secret Service protection are driven around in SUVs. Also it's common knowledge that SUVs are gas guzzlers...that didn't have to be interjected into the blog article.

Also, Secret Service personnel uses SUVs as a means of transportation.
