Obama Touts Work Securing Loose Nukes in New Ad

By Ed O'Keefe
As Barack Obama gives what his campaign is billing as a "major address" on national security, he will start airing a new ad that promotes his efforts to secure nuclear weapons around the world.

Calling it "the single most important national security threat that we face," Obama speaks with voters in footage first used in some of his primary campaign ads.

"We are a beacon of light around the world. At least that's what we can be again. That's what we should be again," Obama tells the voters.

The senator is also seen visiting nuclear sites in Ukraine with Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee who is active on the nuclear security issue. The pair traveled to Ukraine in 2005 to inspect weapons storage facilities. They saw "mortar rounds, land mines and artillery shells of all sizes stacked in huge piles and strewn carelessly about," according to a Post op-ed they wrote in late 2005. Lugar and Obama later co-sponsored a bill passed by Congress that led the U.S. to coordinate efforts with other nations to reduce weapon stockpiles and smuggling.

The new ad and Obama's speech come as the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that voters are split on his qualifications to serve as commander in chief.

"America's Leadership" is a 30-second message that will air in Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Virginia, according to the campaign.

if gratuitous photo-op visits to war zones are crucial to forming policy, why then has McCain suddenly shifted his policy on Afghanistan to match what Obama has been saying since August 2007?

Another courageous stand by Barack Obama against the powerful forces in this country who favor unsecured nukes. (sarcasm)

McCain was not born in the USA.

He was brainwashed as a POW for MANY years, and opted to stay with his captors.

McCain is clearly going to surrender the USA to his former captors on day one!!

"I hope the media would investigate Obama and where he went to school in indonesia."

They did - it was found to be a non-religious school, but you won't hear their report or read this.

Senator Obama is not just talking about Security! He was working towards this goal prior to his run for President. "The pair traveled to Ukraine in 2005 to inspect weapons storage facilities. They saw "mortar rounds, land mines and artillery shells of all sizes stacked in huge piles and strewn carelessly about," according to a Post op-ed they wrote in late 2005. Lugar and Obama later co-sponsored a bill passed by Congress that led the U.S. to coordinate efforts with other nations to reduce weapon stockpiles and smuggling."
Senator Obama is on the Foreign Relations and Veterans' Affairs; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees. He has lived in foreign lands, and travels to Iraq in the very near future. President Obama will restore respect and honor for our country around the world. Rest assured he will be tough on security!

Obama's father was a non practicing Muslim.

Does that matter to the terrorist Muslims?
Do they want Obama in office because of his name: Barack Hussein Obama

What is their media saying to the terrorist muslim people.
Boy, if Obama had a Muslim father and they decide to portray our President as one of them, what could happen? It sounds troubling.

I hope the media would investigate Obama and where he went to school in indonesia.

How could Obama talk about anything pertaining to security.

How much could he know. Did his experience working in the streets of Chicago give him the experience we need in a Presidential leader.

He is risky and scary.
I wouldn't trust the man with anything.
Especially with moral issues.
Don't forget about Reverend Wright and Father Flaeger or the anti American Louis Farrakhan.

So many American people have their heads in the sand. Don't they realize that Hitler was Germany's "Man of Change"?

He ran on the same platform .... he was going to bring about great changes to benefit everyone. Well, he certainly did!

The citizens rallied to support him - cheered him on as they watched in idolization. Sounding familiar? And after all the "changes", we know what happened next.

With Barack we will be asking for bigger government, bigger taxes to support all the "giveaway" programs he is proposing, less money in everyone's pockets, and the loss of even more small businesses. You think big business runs everything now? Just wait!

The government already wants to tell us what light bulbs to buy, how our food should be grown (and who can grow it), what we can and can't wear, what can legally be put into our childrens' vaccinations, etc.

Pretty soon we'll be told we can only have so many children (like China already does). Where does it all end?

I have thought and have seen the paralleism between the Hitler campaign and the Obama campaign. It's scary but true.
The people of Germany idolized Hitler and fell at his feet, much like Americans are doing to Obama.

Hitler had a hidden agenda as I believe Obama has as well.

There are way to many "unknowns" about Obama. I don't think America really likes this guy that much, they just want change and since McCain is a republican, America automatically tunes him out because of Bush.

McCain is very different from Bush and will be the best candidate to lead America. I pray America will come to her senses and vote Obama out.....if not, America will enter very dark days as did Germany under Hitler.

It truly amazes me how Obama knows so much about every issue in light of his lack of rxperience. The answer: H'e being told what to say.
I have no experience in ronning a bank or major corporation. I am getting on the phone and on my computer and I am going to compete for the por]sition of CEO. Should I be considered? I'll let you answer that question.
Obama needs to spend a little more time in the trenches and prove through hard work and experience thet he is ready for the job. Parents won't even allow a person with zero experience to be principal or even asst. principal of their child's school. But they sure seem willing to support a man who has miniscule experience to become the Commander-in Chief of the most awesome job in the world?

MAKES YOU WONDER!

Obama clearly understands that Osama Bin Laden and his ilk struck from the Afghanistan and Pakistan, ***and not from Iraq***.

Back in 2002, I said to everyone who would listen that the buildup in Iraq was a huge distraction from the real issue - Osama Bin Laden, and having the Saudis behead him publicly after we first tar-and-feather him to make him look like a chicken.

One of the biggest costs of the Iraq war has been the lost *opportunity* to have fully committed troops to Afghanistan to capture Bin Laden.

GWB has some of the lowest modern presidential ratings. And somehow, inexplicably, this is not 100% linked with his failure to bring us the head of Bin Laden on a platter.

There's a really moving Darryl Worley song, called "Have you forgotten?", that's about 9/11 and the day the towers fell, and the loved ones we lost in there. GWB, you can stand on the ruins with a bullhorn. But can you get Bin Laden? George W Bush, Have you Forgotten?

In response to Posted by: jimt | July 15, 2008 12:34 PM :
The writer is correct to state "Is he really a god? Is he privy to the same info that the president is? However, he forgot to say that the President is privy to certain classified information but look what he has done with that information NOTHING. Even his own hand picked military leaders are saying the same thing Obam is saying we need more troops in Afghanistan. But the President who is privy to this information does not understand that.

Somehow I think being in the military and visiting Iraq for a useless dog and pony show every couple of years doesn't qualify anyone to speak more knowledgeably about our foreign policy. McCain has proved this time and time again.

Obama is certainly right on this matter, and should have been more of a focus going back to Clinton!

is it my imagination or are you an idiot?
george bush supposidly wore a military uniform and snuck into iraq in the middle of the night for a 2 hour visit- and what did that get us?

Sounds like Obama has some good national security advisors. Hopefully Obama will take office, and end this Republican administration's continued weaking of our national security.

McCain's 100 years of war and nukes is Republican insanity.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 15, 2008 11:57 AM

The Washington Post is so biased toward Obama that I won't read any of their other articles. The Post doesn't even talk about McCain. Talk about slanted journalism. What kind of a rag is this anyway? I wouldn't wipe my backside with the Post.

This is the FINAL warning to Senator Obama. Do not use any foregin phobia cards only to appeal to your voters.

Posted by: Minority Coalition Network | July 15, 2008 11:41 AM

Senator Obama is not qualified to make such a comment that securing nuclear weapons around the world is "the single most important national security threat that we face."

Obama has not ever worn any military uniforms or ever has visited Iraq yet.
