Obama Campaigns on National Security in Indiana

By Perry Bacon Jr.
WEST LAFAYTETTE, Ind. -- Barack Obama touted his proposals to stop the spread of nuclear weapons to countries unfriendly to the U.S. and address other security threats at a campaign event in Indiana, another traditionally Republican state that the senator from Illinois is targeting in the early stages of the presidential contest.

Only a few days before a planned trip abroad to highlight his foreign policy credentials, Obama led a roundtable discussion that included Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and former Georgia senator Sam Nunn on the campus of Purdue University here. Nunn has long worked on non-proliferation issues, while Bayh has served for years on the Senate's Armed Services committee. Both have been mentioned publicly as potential vice presidential selections for Obama.

In his speech, Obama called for a renewed effort to secure nuclear weapons materials over the next four years from places such as the former Soviet Union, convene a UN summit for countries to discuss the spread of nuclear terrorism, and aim for a "nuclear free world" by stopping the development of new nuclear weapons. He repeated his call for direct negotiations with the government of Iran about their nuclear program, a view which the Bush administration and John McCain have opposed.

Obama proposed appointing a "national cyber adviser" who would report to the president on computer security issues

"We've had the debate about terrorism dominate so much of our politics over the last eight years and rightfully so," he said. "What this panel emphasizes is -- because a small group of individuals has the capacity to create great havoc -- it is important we don't approach this as an either/or proposition but a both/and proposition. Yes, we must hunt down terrorists, but we also have to deal with the weapons they might use and take them out of circulation."

Obama's campaign last week started running an ad touting his work on nuclear non-proliferation issues that noted his alliance in this cause with Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), a very popular politician here. The commercial is running in the 18 states that the Obama campaign is now targeting with advertising, which include traditional swing states like Ohio, but also Indiana, Montana, Alaska and North Dakota, which have long voted Republican in presidential elections.

Lugar has been mentioned as a potential Secretary of State if Obama wins, and Obama praised his GOP colleague today.

"Other than the fact that he's a Republican, I can't find anything wrong with that guy," Obama said of Lugar at the event, drawing applause.

Lugar was not in attendance, but he and Obama took a trip together in 2005 to Ukraine and other parts of the former Soviet Union to look at ways to reduce the spread of nuclear materials, which Obama referred to during his remarks.

Indiana seems a tough state for Obama to win at the presidential level, even though Bayh has been successful in statewide races for both governor and senator there, and several Democrats won congressional races here in 2006.

The state last voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1964, and President Bush won here 60 percent to 39 percent over John Kerry in 2004. And Bayh himself, as one of Hillary Clinton's top supporters, warned before the state's May primary that Republicans might try to "Swift Boat" Obama based on the controversial remarks of his former pastor Jeremiah Wright Jr.

"You're running for president and people want to get a sense of who you are, and when you're new to the public stage you're a little more susceptible to having the canvas painted in by your political opponents," Bayh said during an interview a few months ago for the video program "PostTalk" on washingtonpost.com.

But at a press conference after the event here, Bayh was very optimistic. "The first step in trying to win a state is actually to show up and try and I think Barack is doing that," he said, citing polls he had seen showing Obama leading here.

Stay in Briton for if any Country can show it's true colors, it is Briton. No need for a lecture for your Country is a little thorn in the words butt. English and plain enough for you?

Islamophobia is a neologism that refers to prejudice or discrimination against Islam or Muslims.

So now the Brit who posted a lecture to all of us has spoken and the world now knows what you said in simple language. If you're living in America, or Canada then please, leave and go live with them. We will all chip in for your plane fair. Politically correct from the people. No one has a grudge with Muslims who respect our Countries values PERIOD. Your tme table for a take over is a British dream. We don have a hundred years.

@ Jenny Lumbardy-

your post (which was an exercise in islamophobia) about europe was erroneous. I am a Brit, so I'll confine myself to England.

You say: "England has many radical Muslims and have changed their countries way of living for these Muslims (Muslims clerks are allowed not to sell liquor, dress"

I'm afraid this is simply an alarmits exageration. There are radical islamists in the UK, and there are moderate ones. If you are muslim, you may choose to wear muslim dress. It's a free country. If you are a muslim who is a clerk in a convenience store, you may choose not to apply for a licence to sell alcohol. It's a free country.

Next: "even one of the English clergy thought the Muslims in England should be under THEIR, not British laws.)"

Poppycock. The Archbishop of Canterbury (and more recently the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales) have argued that such Sharia (islamic law) rules which are not incompatible with a principle of english law ought to be recognised by the Courts as valid rules under which FREE INDIVIDUALS can seek to resolve their problems outside Courts of Law. We call this Alternative Dispute Resolution. People can Mediate or Arbitrate their disputes. The London Beth Din has long been recognised as a place where Jews can settle disputes and have the adjudication recognised by the British courts as a binding compromise in some matters (eg family law).

In the family law context Archbishop Williams and Lord Phillips thought that the UK Courts should give more weights to alternative dispute resolution via sharia law principles. They EXPLICITLY stated that English law would prevail in the event of any conflict.

To say that a member of the UK clergy would say that muslims should have sharia law in the Uk is a gross misrepresentation.

"The Muslims are slowly taking over Europe as their birth rate is high while the European's birth rate is going down."

There are 500 million people in the EU. 20 million are muslim. Even if you were right (and kept being right for another 100 years), the EU wouldn't be a muslim continent until well over a hundred years from now.

"Think about this very carefully. Do they really need a war to take us over? We need to not be politically correct and instead stand for our beliefs we have had in our country since our country's birth."

No one wants to "take you over". Jeez. I can't believe Americans have sunk so low about immigration.

A commenter mentioned the terrorist problem which Obama and the Democrats are ignoring. On a month long cruise last fall I attended seminars by a retired highly placed official of NATA "The Changing Face of Europe". He pointed out that Islam is the second largest religion in France (there are over 1700 mosques there); England has many radical Muslims and have changed their countries way of living for these Muslims (Muslims clerks are allowed not to sell liquor, dress, even one of the English clergy thought the Muslims in England should be under THEIR, not British laws. The Muslims are slowly taking over Europe as their birth rate is high while the European's birth rate is going down. Think about this very carefully. Do they really need a war to take us over? Starryperdun (one of the first commenters), you forgot a lot about Obama switcharoos: gun control, campaign financing, wiretapping, capital punishment, faith based groups, the flag pin he now wears, his church & pastor he had for 20 yrs. but never heard the hate, so on, so on, so on......He has his 'presidential seal', has started redecorating Lincoln bedroom, has to have a hugh football stadium for his nomination speech, wants to speak at the Brandunberg Gate in Germany even tho it is causing controvery in that country, on & on and on.

A man who believes in everything (like Obama) believes in nothing.

Elected officials need to stop putting politics and political correctness above principles.

For those who believe Obama is a moderate Christian, I will quote from his speech in June of 2006 to a liberal Christian group Call to Renewal: "Jesus' Sermom on the Mount" is a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our Defense Dept. would survive its application."

I read his wife's thesis while at college a number of years ago and she is a revolutionist. Too bad the college has denied access to it by anyone.

-- (CBS) Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama leads Republican counterpart John McCain 45 percent to 39 percent in the latest CBS News/New York Times poll of registered voters nationwide. The six percentage point spread is unchanged since June, when Obama led McCain 48 percent to 42 percent. --

And us Clintonities, now begin the "I told you so"
refrain.

Only up 6, is weak with the GOP in historical disfavor.
Everyone knows by now they are corrupt and
incompetent. Bush is at 28% approval - lower than
NIXON...

You blow that out, you don't barely lead it.

Conversely, down only 6 is an excellent position
for a GOP, that has made an art form of turning
summer deficits into fall leads on the back of
smear campaigns (Dukakis, Gore, Kerry - all
led big early, all lost).

(Actually, to digress, Gore won... ;-)

Point holds. 6% deficit / childsplay for falsehood
mongers like Rove and Mehlman. Oh btw, by NOT
going with Hillary, the nearly-as-ignorant DNC just
handed them a motherlode of untapped smear
material.

Smart Mr. Dean! Brace yourselves, for the return
of Rev. Wright. "GD America", Barack. You were
there, you knew, you lied about knowing.

And that is only the true portion, of the coming personal
attacks on him. It will get much uglier still. They will be
repeated so often and loudly by the Limbaugh's and
Hannity's and O'Reilly's, some of it will stick. Ask
McSame what Rove did to him in the SC 2000 primary.
Ask the late Ann Richards, what he did to her in the '95
TX govenor race. Bankrupt of legitimate solutions, it's
how they win in the modern era. Here it comes.

Both parties are dominated now by total ignorants.

In his writing, in his speeches, and in his comments off the cuff, Obama always seems to maintain a balanced perspective. He consistently seems to address the topic or question at hand within a larger context, and to indicate that context when outlining his views. Whether I agree with him on a particular issue or not, I think Obama's clear, measured, and detailed approach to complex issues would be an asset in a president. He's raised the bar in the quality of political debate. That seems to frustrate people who practice bumper-sticker politics.

I read on The Fix that registration requirements were dropped by mistake several months ago and they are finally to be reinstituted soon. I sure hope so. Providing a worldwide megaphone with the Washington Post brand to every incoherent messenger of random grievance and hate is not living up to the Post's tradition in any way I can see.

And when I try to "e-mail us" to report truly offensive comments, even without quoting them, my e-mail always bounces, so I've given up on that as well. What a summer. As for me, I'm going to have to stop wasting my time on this and go register some more voters tomorrow.

It's refreshing to see someone like Obama discussing the multiple security issues which confront the United States. With Bush, it seems like everything first gets filtered as to how it potentially affects Israel, then if any money or capacity for attention is left over, only then can other concerns be addressed. You must admit that Israel's lobbyists are really getting their money's worth with Bush. Too bad the American taxpayer can't say the same thing.

It occurs to me that as long as you define some people as enemies and others as friends, you are setting up conflict. It's critically important for this country to learn that national security doesn't have to (and shouldn't) mean using force.
Barack Obama understands this.

This is just some of the Stuff the media has let Obama get away with

1-When he plagiarized major portions of Patrick Duval's "Just Words" speech, the media said he had "borrowed" the words! Yeah, right! He would have received an "F" at Harvard for "borrowing" that much of anyone's speech! Plagiarism killed Biden's 2004 campaign.
2-When the Rev. Wright issue came up and the problem that Obama had was really patriotism, the press swooned at his feet when he made his "race" speech that had NOTHING to do with the real problem-patriotism.
3-When Obama referred to blue-collar, hard working people as clinging to their religion and guns and then called them bigots, his campaign would have ended the day the comment was released IF the media had not come to his aid. The media, instead of focusing on how horrendous Obama's comments were, started calling Hillary an elitist and began retelling Obama's life story to make sure everyone knew that he was not an elitist!
4-When Obama said in a derogatory manner that Madeline Albright might have something to say about Hillary's so-called foreign affairs experience, the media failed to point out that Obama was being an uninformed idiot since Albright had already had a lot to say about Hillary's EXCELLENT foreign affairs qualifications!
5-When Obama was rude to a person who pestered him for a picture and finally gave in and said "but I'm not going to smile" the media barely mentioned his lack of self-control. They made excuses for his being exhausted! Had any other politician treated anyone in that manner their names would have been mud on ALL media outlets!
6-When Hillary had problems with her answer in a debate re driver's license for illegal immigrants (the only real problem she had in ALL of the debates), she experienced tremendous media attacks. But, one week later Obama failed to have an answer for the exact same question! The media barely mentioned that he could not BUT SHOULD HAVE been able to answer that question, especially since it had been such a hot topic during the prior week!
7-When Obama's answer to a female reporter's question was "Just a minute, Sweetie", the media made all kinds of excuses for him and once again let him off the hook.

One or more of Obama's gaffes listed above would have been a campaign killer in races past. There is no doubt whatsoever that the media gave Obama far too many passes during the Democratic primaries; and, as a result, the Democratic Party now has a PRESUMPTIVE nominee who is a flawed candidate due to his gaffes, mistakes, and lack of experience on the national stage.

How unfortunate it is that a candidate possessing only two years of experience on the national stage can be propped up by the media and leave Americans with such a poor choice to make for President of the most powerful country in the world!

I'll vore for McCain

What is McCain's problem? Too tired to travel back to DC to vote? His age catching up to him? This may be viewed as problematic since being POTUS often requires extensive traveling 7x24x365. Barack may or may not believe that islamic terror is a big problem for the US and the West. But many of the leftists who gather under his big tent clearly do not. Kerry believes it is a simple criminal problam and no big deal. Many of the more radical elements believe that the US itself is the problem. Books and articles come out of them that condemn the US and its efforts in fighting terrorists and that focus not at all on the threat of islamists. As a matter of fact that phrase "islamic terrorism" will be entirely absent from the Democrat National Convention. After all, liberals are wild-eyed multi-culturalists. Obama will not go against the base of his leftwing party- he will do as they say, "Forget terrorism- it's not a problem." That attitude puts the lives of American in grave jeopardy.

Obama has been changing his positions everyday since Hillary dropped out in an attempt to get to the middle of the road. I guess his campaign felt people were laughing at his change slogan. There is no doubt that we believe he is changing.

Obama has "transformed" politics by ushering in a new era of disingenuous pandering others thought impossible until now. It is truly audacious.

So, the Cub Scout who wants to be Commander-in-Chief will secure nuclear weapons materials from the former Soviet Union, convene a UN summit, and aim for a "nuclear free world." And I'm sure he will perform these miracles in the first 100 days too.

Of course he has no clue how to influence a Russia run by former KGB agents. He's also stupid enough to think that a UN summit can accomplish anything. And lastly, a "nuclear free world" he must still be smoking some controlled substances.

A security policy that doesn't secure the southern border with Mexico is no security policy at all. Barry will surrender American sovereignty in chunks large and small, to Mexico, to the UN, to the North American Union, to our enemies...

Have you seen the satire on the obamessiah entitled "To Tell the Truth"? B-Hussein is sitting in all three seats and gives a different response (all quotations) to questions about Iraq, energy, gun ownership, etc. And to the request "Will the Real Obama please stand up" ...
Well, I'll leave the answer for you to see.
He is indeed a person of "change" - - his OWN change.

Everbody saw Obama's security proposals last week during his pandering Council Laraza festival when he accused "ICE agents and Border security agents as being terrorists".

Logically, his next step will be to turn the military - the Mexcian Military - on those brave unsung American heroes for enforcing the law.

How can anyone pretend to even address security in a post 9-11 America without first securing our porous southern broder? Obama is a great pretender.

"Teach your children to speak Spanish" Americans! Don't bother with all the other languages available to an English speaking nation full of God fearing gun clad xenophobes!

I once thought I might vote for Obama but I respect America's sovereingty and I do speak French when in France and Italian when in Rome but I'm not going to be forced to speak Spanish at home.

I doubt many other Americans will tolerate that open borders, pro Spanish message either.

MoveOn.org has produced a new ad using recent comments by Iraq's prime minister to make its case that John McCain is wrong about the Iraq war.

"Timeline" is a 30-second spot that picks up on Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's recent statements that he wants a withdrawal timetable for U.S. troops in his country. The ad also notes that "the American people are demanding a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq."

"But John McCain doesn't want a timetable," the ad continues. "He'll spend hundreds of billions of dollars more to keep our keep our troops in Iraq for years and years."

MoveOn will spend $100,000 on the ad, according to a source with the group.

"That Obama's campaign transformed the interweb into a massive grassroots fundraising tools stands in direct contradiction to your point about their "cyber-ignorance," theaz."

The Obama campaign wasn't the first and by no means will be the last to accept donations online. Making it seem as if Obama "transformed the interweb into a massive grassroots fundraising tools (sic)" stands as a monument to the ignorance of the portion of the populace that bought into the Obama hype.

btw, check that precipitous fall in online donations to the Obama campaign over the last several months. Looks like the grass is dying.

STOP GOP REPUBLICAN MCCAIN FROM SELLING OUR AMERICA.

This remarkable unleashing of deep Democratic energies went hand in hand with clever GOP Republican efforts to subvert the will of the American People, whether by overt corruption or covert manipulation. This corruption or manipulation resulted from the widespread market activity that was incompatible with the good of the American Public. American Citizens were well aware that the voices of the People could be offset by powerful GOP Republican market elites bending the system to serve the interests of the few. The economic power of the GOP Republicans were recognized to be the primary source of Wall Street speculators' corruptions.

Democratic dialogue was motivated by opposition to the market-driven greedy GOP Republicans obsessed with obscene quantity of moneymaking with little regard for the quality of the Public's Democracy. Democratic love of wisdom was contrasted sharply against the GOP Republicans love of money.

Impeach the defunct GOP Republican Party of Wall Street Super Rich Thieves for milking our country the way wolves milk cows. America deserves intelligent and honest leadership demonstrated by scholars who love America, Americans and Our Freedom. America the Beautiful belongs to All Americans and will no longer be the plaything of Wall Street Super Rich GOP Republicans wolves.

I wonder if McCain even knows what the word "cyber" means. The old fart is amusing and rather scary when the man who is looking to lead the most technologically advanced country in the world doesn't know how to get online without help, even scarier that he admits to it.

For those who continue to be non believers in Obama's message for CHANGE, maybe now you will understand that he will make good on his promise to work for the people of the USA. He has assymbled the very strongest team America has to offer in terms of experience with honorable reputations.

Barack Obama will provide Americans with a quality administration that will help ordinary people like most of us, rebound from 8 years of Bush and his failed policies.

Please vote democratic across the board so we can have a democratic president and congress. Life will be so much better for not only Americans but for the human race as a whole.

I am very proud to support Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States of America in November 2008.

We been dealing with Soviet Republics back to the Clinton Administration on their nuclear weapons, is he going to invade now to get greater results. Also, I'm sure then he applauds the Bush's Administration for getting 3,500 drums YellowCake out of Iraq. Glad have Obama on board with the Republicans!

Obama proposed appointing a "national cyber adviser" who would report to the president on computer security issues.

...while McCain is still trying to learn how to use a computer, and hopes someday to be able to get online without help!
