Gorbachev Decries Presidential Candidates' 'Cold War'-Style Military Spending Plans
By Glenn Kessler
Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev today called on U.S. presidential candidates to develop alternatives to the use of military power, decrying what he called "increasingly visible signs of the militarization of politics and thinking in the modern world ... even though the military route again and again leads to a dead-end."
Writing in the the Russian government daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta, Gorbachev said the Bush administration has shown a tendency to "seek to address these problems primarily through threats and pressure. Will the candidates develop an alternative approach to these most crucial problems? This is now the main question."
RIA Novosti, the Russion Information service, carried an account of Gorbachev's article in English.
He blamed U.S. military spending for the downturn in the U.S. economy and said neither Sen. Barack Obama or John McCain has addressed the issue.
"The subject of military spending has literally been shrouded in a curtain of silence," he said. "This taboo must be lifted."
The U.S. accounts for 50 percent of the world's output of arms and military equipment, Gorbachev noted, adding: "It runs over 700 military bases across the world and plans to build more as if the Cold War were not a thing of the past, and the country were surrounded by enemies."
Gorbachev pointed to the recent diplomacy with North Korea over its nuclear programs as an example of a more effective approach to international affairs. He urged that a similar avoidance of military action be taken with Iran.

This constant military spending is more for the benefit of the contractors than us, billions and billions of our dollars are being stolen from us, and just being used to incite more terrorist attacks against us. Why didn't those stupid bastards attack Halliburton's offices instead of going after completely innocent people?

Is it true the Dems have received more funding from the MIC for this presidential campaign cycle than the Republicans for the first time in a long time? I'm trying to find the reference. Can anyone help? Thanks!!

JR Boston, those Islamic extremists are still on the loose because the Bush administration failed to go after them (or perhaps aided and abetted them in the crime in the first place?). Why should they capture these purported rogues when they provide the Republicans with an oh-so-convenient boogeyman to scare the public at election time?
Fifteen Saudis among the terrorists--not a single Iraqi--yet not one bomb has been dropped on Saudi Arabia to date. Could it be because of those cushy, decades-long ties between the Bush family and the Saudi ruling family?
Gorby is right. Who would have ever thought that a former Soviet Communist party apparatchik would have the moral high ground over the U.S.?

Gorbachev sees both Obama and McCain (and Hilary Clinton before) pushing a neo-con foreign and military policy, aimed at Russia. The buildup of NATO to the gates of Russia, the abandonment of any pretense that NATO is a defensive force, the use of NATO instead as an aggressive military alliance trying to grab control of markets and resources in typical imperialist fashion, and finally its service as an imperialist den of thieves, in the manner of the League of Nations in the 1920s -- no wonder Russians get nervous.

Hey "theaz" and "Jr, Boston" retards, don't you realize that Russia is also dealing with their own terrorism issues? Do a Google search for Beslan school hostage crisis. Oh yeah, now you remember. Next time think before you open your big mouths.

Gorbachev says the Bush administration seeks "to address these problems primarily through threats and pressure", and he thinks Obama has not voiced opposition to this? I think the Russians have not received much information about the American political election. Indeed, Obama has addressed this point from the beginning -- that's entirely why the Republicans (and some Democrats, namely Hillary) called him naive and inexperienced. Gorbachev needs to have a closer look!

This remarkable unleashing of deep Democratic energies went hand in hand with clever GOP Republican efforts to subvert the will of the American People, whether by overt corruption or covert manipulation. This corruption or manipulation resulted from the widespread market activity that was incompatible with the good of the American Public. American Citizens were well aware that the voices of the People could be offset by powerful GOP Republican market elites bending the system to serve the interests of the few. The economic power of the GOP Republicans were recognized to be the primary source of Wall Street speculators' corruptions.
Democratic dialogue was motivated by opposition to the market-driven greedy GOP Republicans obsessed with obscene quantity of moneymaking with little regard for the quality of the Public's Democracy. Democratic love of wisdom was contrasted sharply against the GOP Republicans love of money.

With all due to respect to Mr. Gorbachev (cough cough), America was bombed by Islamic extremists seven years ago. Those people are still on the loose, they have an extreme religious worldview, and they sometimes think in terms of very long timeframes. Plainly put, some of them would like to bomb us into the stone age so that they can become the center of civilization.
I can understand how an atheist like Gorbachev could fail to understand the true nature of the threat that we are dealing with. And I can understand why the Soviet Union fell. They had no real beliefs.

In fact, Gorbachev is spot on in his assessment; the two candidates and Americans would be wise to study the history of the USSR's downfall, its rabid military spending as its economy and society careened toward the end... Listen to the wisdom of world leaders, Gorbachev knows quite a bit

Gorbachev is a friend of the United States. America should listen to him, not. Peace exists when the status quo powers/democracies are more powerful than those that seek to upset the status quo/dictatorships.
