Obama Celebrates a Small-Town Fourth

Sen. Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, left, watch a Fourth of July parade with their two daughters, Malia, right, and Sasha, in Butte, Mont., July 4, 2008. (Associated Press)

By Jonathan Weisman
BUTTE, Mont. -- With John McCain taking July Fourth off, Barack Obama had the campaign trail to himself for Independence Day, taking in a small-town July Fourth parade here and inviting his family and a thousand of his closest friends to a picnic in the Rockies.

Today was the last leg of the Illinois senator's week-long values tour of largely Republican territory. And after hitting the themes of patriotism in Missouri, faith in Appalachian Ohio, service in Colorado, and veterans care in North Dakota, the Fourth was given over to family.

Malia, his elder daughter, turned 10 today. With her in the grandstands at the beginning of the parade route were wife Michelle and seven-year-old daughter Sasha, as well as half sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, her husband Konrad Ng, and their four-year-old daughter Suhaila.

Obama kicked off the parade, telling the crowd that with Malia turning 10 on July 4, he "finally told her the truth, that all the fireworks and stuff are not just for her."

The standard holiday trappings of patriotism stood in pointed echo of his week's message. The Obama family all waved small American flags. Sasha and Malia wore the pink cowboy hats that Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) gave them for Malia's birthday.

And a day after he stirred controversy by suggesting he may be willing to slow a withdrawal from Iraq following consultations with field commanders, the closest Obama got to the war issue was the Shriners' Bagdad Burikka Patrol.

"What makes this country great is not the size of our military, not the size of the economy, not the big buildings we have," Obama said. "What makes this country great is its people."

You know, after reading the racist, vile and evil posts on this blog (Mrs. Obama is Sasquatch? whispering whitey? Little realllly funny rat=hole assasination jokes, son of satan, inability to read a freakin' joke that Obama tells about his daughter's 4th of July birthday -- carol, are you really telling me you've never heard any other 4th of July birthday person be told the fireworks were for them? are you that angry and resentful?) I wonder how many of you were dressed up in your red white and blue, on your way to fireworks as you spewed your evil. People died for our freedoms, for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, for the freedom of slaves and the equality of women and people of all races, creeds and religions. You sneer at we liberals because we don't grab the flag every time a bomb is threatened to be dropped, but I see in reading these comments that we're a lot closer to our forefathers ideals of America than you'll ever be with your hatred and prejudices. America -- land of the free, home of the brave (yeah, a black man running for President). Love it -- or LEAVE IT!!! Because we're not going anywhere other than to the inauguration of Barack Obama on Jan. 20.

Can you imagine the headlines if Obama would have voted against the FISA compromise?
"Obama votes for Terrorism"- and in the back of many peoples minds "See, he really does support terrorism"

Re: Iraq-He is the only candidate that wants to end the war, but he will not end it recklessly, endangering young American lives.

Campaign Finance: Obama NEVER unconditionally pledged to accept public financing. He said he would IF certain conditions could be met. With McCain playing his little (most likely illegal) campaign finance games how could Obama trust him and the repubs to play fair? What's he supposed to do, hand McCain the election?

These are not flip-flops, if you want the definition of flip-flop just look it up in the dictionary und "Candidate John McCain"

Scott, thank you for attempting to engage on substantive issues.

You said:

"You don't really want to know...just like you understand that McCain was referring to an peacekeeping force for 100 or 200 years in an eventually peaceful Iraq, analogous to current day Japan, but here goes anyway ....McCain would do the following things differently than Bush:
1. Address global warming with a Cap and Trade system
2. Support the environment in general
3. Extend unemployment benefits
4. Job Training through community colleges
5. Immigration reform
6. Support stem cell research
7. Enact greater cost cutting/quality assurance initiatives in health care while continuing a free market system
please tell me how Obama is going to do anything that Jimmy Carter didn't already try unsuccessfully....more 20% interest rates in our future?
How's that Corn Ethanol working out that your Illinois senator is forcing down our throats...we can't even afford popcorn at the theater!
Corn ethanol- 2 units energy out per 1 in
Sugar Cane ethanol 8 units out per 1 in...
===============================
In point of fact, Obama agrees on 1-6, so little difference between them there. On 7. the difference is stark; McCain's tax credits toward Health Insurance are woefully meager, and seem to point to someone out of touch with the Average American's problems in finding affordable Healthcare, a problem, McCain has clearly never had, especially if you are older or have pre-conditions; such high risk citizens are paying hundreds, even thousands a month for comprehensive insurance; a friend's sister with multi problems pays $30,000 a year for hers. McCain's plan helps businesses more than individuals and families by taking the onus off of employers for providing healthcare, yet if the employer does offer a health insurance plan they will still enjoy a tax break, while their employees, who may pay up to 50% of their premium will not be able to write off their 50%.

Do you really think that the Free-Market will spread risk around by offering customers with existing conditions affordable Health Insurance? I don't think so, and McCain's plan doesn't compel them to do so. Young and healthy people may benefit from deregulation of the Industry (sort of like the prices on car insurance have come down as the market was opened up), however, this Country is top Heavy with baby boomers, and they most certainly will not benefit. McCain's plan doesn't come close to covering the 47 million uninsured Americans or the millions more who are underinsured. Obama's plan, which anyone can opt out of the buy their own insurance, or are free to stay with their companies insurance, will cover the vast majority of Americans that currently aren't covered, including those with pre-conditions.

As for ethanol, McCain has been all over the place on it. He has been against subsidizing it, but before the Iowa primary, said that it was "a good alternative" to gas. Yes Obama, and in fact, all the Politicans in the mid-west, whether Republican or Democrat, support it as it brings revenue to the people in their States. It is what it is. I do think that whoever becomes President will have to take a good look at the issue, and I expect to see McCain flip on ethanol production again like he did in an interview with Tim Russert in Dec.:
========================
"RUSSERT: In 2007 you go to Iowa and say this: 'I support ethanol. I think it's a vital alternative energy source, not only because of our dependence on foreign oil but because of its greenhouse gas reduction effects.'
Is the switch because you're entering the Iowa caucus?
MCCAIN: When oil is $15 a barrel, ethanol does not make sense. When oil is $60-plus a barrel, then ethanol does make sense.
RUSSERT: So you've changed your mind.
MCCAIN: No, I haven't. I have adjusted to the realities of the world we live in today.
=======================================
As for Iraq, do we really want more permanent bases in the Middle East? Part of the hatred the terrorists have for us, specifically Bin Laden, is our bases in Saudi Arabia. One only has to think about the West's checkered History (the Crusades, the mess made in the Region prior to and after WW1) in the region to realize how different the situation is Politically to have permanent bases in the conquered, now Democratic, Nations of WW2 as compared to establishing bases in the vastly different culture of the States in the middle-east. I think that if McCain were a better student of History, that he might question the wisdom of such a proposal as well. Personally it is not an idea I support.

I also resent having to pay with my tax dollars for our continued presence in a Country sitting on a $100 Billion dollar nest egg, while the infra-structure of this Country is crumbling. In addition, we stay in Iraq at the peril of losing the War against terror in Afghanistan where Al Qaeda was at the time of 9/11 (they have since decamped to Pakistan.) We need to get out of Iraq as soon as it is feasible and deploy more troops to Afghanistan and the Pakistani border. If McCain continues our presence in Iraq, not to mention a possible new altercation in Iran, where will he get more troops? Will he need to enact a draft?

As for your Jimmy Carter analogy, it won't fly...a better analogy would be Obama and Bill Clinton. Obama has brought the Clinton era economists Robert Rubin and Robert Reich on board. I expect the first term of an Obama Presidency to be moderate on the tax issue; I would bet, in fact, no extreme tax hikes (he possibly may take capital gains up to 20%, but even that is iffy), instead he will reduce corporate taxes, and attempt to push through a tax cut for the middle-class. What he does precisely will depend on the state of the economy when Obama takes office. As his consideration of the new circumstances in Iraq suggests, Obama will be flexible tailoring his policies to contemporaneous circumstances.

NYTimes-Original Post | 2:28 p.m.: FARGO, N.D. - Senator Barack Obama said Thursday the United States cannot sustain a long-term military presence in Iraq, but added that he would be open to "refine my policies" about a timeline for withdrawing troops after meeting with American military commanders during a trip to Iraq later this month.
Hey Genius who called me an idiot...you're a coward too, what are you afraid to give even an anonymous name or it's too creative for you...you know Naked Emperor Lover, something clever like that...read the above. When gas was $1.50 a gallon, McCain was against offshore drilling, at $4.50 he's for it...different circumstances...Obama gave a speech against the war in 2002, voted to fund it since being elected to Senate...out maneuvered Hilary on the left during the primaries, now is moving right for the general...It's like a game of Whack a Mole!

Re: Obama's No-side

Well, a "flip-flopper" knows one side for sure. Obama does not have any one-side.
One day he said he would increase the number of forces; next day he said the size would not matter. My question is who is going to believe what Obama said if he "had said" he would bring our troops home in 16 months?? Poor Americans, wake up and face the reality: Why do we need to increase the force if Obama's logic is correct?

Here's what CNN reports about Obama's military increase: "ground forces by 65,000 soldiers and 27,000 Marines."

Expanding AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots and doubling the size of the Peace Corps;

Integrating service-learning programs into schools and universities

Providing new service opportunities for working Americans and retirees;

Expanding service initiatives that "engage disadvantaged young people and advance their education";

Expanding the capacity of nonprofit groups to innovate and expand successful programs across the country; and

Enabling more Americans to serve in the armed forces. Read Obama's full plan (PDF)

Nothing changed and no republican 527's pished him to do it...in fact BABY ALEX was on the air distorting McCain's words at the time 24/7 courtesy of George Soros. Check those facts.

Posted by: Scott | July 5, 2008 7:37 AM | Report abuse

I don't see Obama as a flip flopper at all. I've read his books and looked at his policy positions. He's made minor adjustments to his policies - which you want in a politician, I don't want an idiot "decider" that doesn't review his policies based on new facts.

However, supporting the death penalty for heinous crimes is not a new position - it's in his book.

Not taking federal money was not a pledge - it was an offer, originally considered, and IMHO not take precisely b/c of the crazy, personal attack opposition that he is getting. I am GLAD he didn't take the federal $, as combatting the lies is going to require money, and the RNC and 527's are already at work.

Those are not flip flops, as far as I'm concerned.

McCain, on the other hand, has completely reversed most of his positions in seeking the Republican nomination. He flip flops more than a pancake. How in the world can his supporters call OBAMA a flip flopper without their nose growing like Pinnochio?

I cannot fathom why the Washington Post would allow its good name to be besmirched by the hate postings cum racism that permeate this blog. Are you ashamed to exercise responsible censorship (after all, no state action is involved here)? Why allow here what you wouldn't permit published as a letter-to-the-editor in the print edition?

Part of the freedom of the press is your right to determine to what and to whom you devote space.

Someone with good judgment should be delegated the authority to draw the line separating comments expressing an idea from those which are nothing more than an ad hominem attack (often suffused with racism)that no reasonable person could view as part of legitimate political discourse.

C.) Knocked all of his opponents off the ballot so he could run unopposed

D.) Ran with the slogan: "We did it for Harold, we can do it for Barack!"

(C) Is the correct answer!

Obama challenged the nominating petition signatures of the incumbent, Sen. Alice Palmer, and three other rivals!

Here is the link to back it up!

And Don't just tell your friends and family about this! Email it to them! Make them see the Chicago Tribune! Make them see the TRUTH!!!

Here is another fact...

There are 52 Sundays in every year. Obama attended Jeremiah Wright's HATE CHURCH for 20 years... Formula: (52 Sundays x 20 Years = 1,040 Sermons)

Happy 4th of July AMERICA. We will stand and never die. The Media is paid off and we need to turn it off...

I cannot fathom why the Washington Post would allow its good name to be besmirched by the hate postings cum racism that permeate this blog. Are you ashamed to exercise responsible censorship (after all, no state action is involved here).? Why allow herre what you wouldn't permit in the paper itself?

Part of freedom of the press is your right to determine to what and to whom you devote space. Someone with good judgment should be delegated the authority to draw the line separating the expression of an idea ad hominem attack, particularly one suffused with racism.

There are nothing but crackers here. Not the fire type either, just plain racist pigs. All you can do is trot out an Aunt Jemima joke, and dump on a name Obama didnt get the option to pick on his own, and stoke the fear of the black boogie man, when you ignorant nimrods, Obama is going to try to fix things for the middle class. Why is it that you think that if the fat cats elect their boy that they are going to share their bounty with you??? Gee they were in office for 8 years so did you ask where's yours? So where is it? What happen to all that trickle down? So did you get jobs, got health care, can you pay your credit card bills, can you retire, can you put your kids through college, can you pay your mortgage, can we walk with our heads held high in another country without them hating American's, do you have to choose between buying gasoline and food??? You are nothing to them, except where they can exploit your racism with fear and ignorance, and you still support the idiots who are giving you 5 dollar a gallon gas, while helping big oil rape our pockets, rape our land, distort our democracy, and then tell us gee, can't do anything about making all those billions off the middle class Americans backs? Do you people have any critical thinking skills anymore, or will you let fear rule your life, racism rule your heart? It doesn't matter what Obama does because you wouldn't agree with him if he agreed with you, all because he's a black man, and to you that is Satan. What empty bankrupt holes of humans you are.

somehow, after reading some of these vile comments, i have serious doubts that this is what our founding fathers had in mind when they debated the right to freedom of speech. freedom of speech, yes; the right to spew out some of this trash, probably not. p.s. to some of the wapo bloggers, proper spelling and grammar might help sell your argument (spellcheck on your computer - it's free).

It is disheartening to see such mean-spirited comments from so many people on this site. Lighten up people! Obama and his family are willing to put their lives under public scrutiny because they love this country. Let's please leave his wife and children out of this and stick to the issues! A little girl's birthday is a happy day. Don't you get the joke? Of course, any child would think that all of the razzle dazzle of fireworks would be normal for a Fourth of July birthday. Too bad that so many people are threatened by the change this is possible when we all put aside our differences and work for the good of our country. Happy Birthday, USA!

CarolTate2, your right to support and campaign for yor choise is what America is all about. Certainly we enjoy rights more than anyone else in the world has. But we have some responsibility to discuss these things in a rational manner. Being a "Nobama" finatic borders on "I hate your candidate more than I love mine" and this is not very useful no matter who you support.

If you believe McCain is a better candidate then make that argument. If you simply want to tear down his opponent based on cowboy hats and flag pins then that is really meaningless.

I never attempt to learn about a candidate by reading what his opponent is saying. I can think for myself and discern who supports which policy without any propaganda written by their opposition.

McCain has a number of ideas that are worth discussing. None of which are about hats, flag pins, or war records. It's about what each candidate is capable of doing for this country.

All the negative arguments and diatribes made by both sides in this campaign are pretty much absurd and have little to do with what either candidate actually represents. They are real distractions from all the actual issues.

...The standard holiday trappings of patriotism stood in pointed echo of his week's message. The Obama family all waved small American flags.******** ... presidential candidate Senator Barack Hussein Obama was forced to explain why he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played. 'As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides,' - Barack Hussein Obama

Obama went on to say, "There are a lot of people in the world to Whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.'"...."the islamic call to prayer is the sweetest sound he's ever heard"......((((guess he's now redefining his opinion of "Old Glory")))).... bama's other face is showing again! Well,, not limited to 83 million dollars from taxpayers, Obama can raise unlimited funds THROUGH taxpayers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Hey donkeyhole, where do you think public campaign financing money comes from? A Pinata?? A few years ago Republicans lamented free campaign money but now they riddicule Obama for NOT ACCEPTING it????
You bozo's want to think this is a flip-flop example. It isn't. It is is a wise tactical manoever designed to win an election. To fault him for not taking free money is absurd. Me thinks you are whining because he can raise the extra money and McCain can't. Surely if McCain was in his shoes he would be astute to make the same choice. McCain probably pounded his clenched fist in his other hand and proclaimed "Damn I was afraid he was going to do that."
When they write the epitaph of McCain's campaign they will speak of Obama's decisive move to reject public campaign financing. It will be a major nail in McCain's campaign coffin.
Be sure to keep score on these things. The recent campaign management shake up is another body blow to McCain's efforts. He can only take so many of these hits before his campaign either loses on points or suffers a TKO.
Obama is slowly steamrolling McCain. His vision and management skills overcome any perceptions of his lack of experience. McCain is a dinosaur and he is about to become a fossil.
Politicans and campaigns like his are soon to be a thing of the past.
The NY Times is reporting today that Democrats are holding July 4th BBQ's in an effort to expand overseas absentee voting for Obama. This effort meshes nicely with Obama's opting out of public campaign financing. How? Well,, not limited to 83 million dollars from taxpayers, Obama can raise unlimited funds THROUGH taxpayers. The funding can come from any overseas party that has an interest in influencing our election, like Hamas, for example- they've already endorsed his candidacy, so why not finance it? FARFETCHED? No, not really, Nadhmi Auchi, the Iraqi billionaire, whose job it was to launder money for Saddam in London, loaned 3.5 million dollars to Tony Rezko, who lent $700,000 to his wife, who used it to purchase the purposely subdivided property adjacent to Obama's house...worked out well for the Obamas once...hmm. Certainly hamas, Iran, etc would put their money where their mouth is...hot dog anyone?
