Obama Opposes Gay Marriage Ban

By Perry Bacon Jr.
Barack Obama is opposing a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in California, taking a liberal stand on an issue in the midst of a move to the center on others in recent weeks.

In a letter sent to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club of San Francisco this week, the Illinois senator said "I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states."

Conservatives in the state are pushing a constitutional amendment following a California Supreme Court decision that overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Presumptive GOP nominee John McCain backs the proposed amendment.

Obama aides emphasized he has opposed similar state bans in the past. They said the Illinois senator does not support gay marriage, but believes that federal and state constitutional amendments banning gay marriage can also threaten rights that couples have under civil unions and domestic partnerships, which Obama supports.

Obama quietly announced his stance in a statement in a letter to the Toklas club, a California gay rights group. His position comes as a shift for Democrats, as 2004 presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry backed amendments to ban gay marriage in some of the states in which he campaigned.

I don't support Gay marrige but I don't believe that I, or any other person has the right to impede on the decisions another person makes about his or her life. No matter how much I like or dislike a choice that some one else makes, it is still THIER choice. Not mine, not yours, nobody's but thier own. I also believe that it is unconsitutional to try to force some one else to do something that you want them to do in order to make YOU happy. Every one has the right to persue thier OWN happiness, and trying to stop two people that are truely in love from being together is just evil. Look at it from thier point of view. If you're in love with some one , wouldn't you be angry if some one else was keeping you and that person from being happy together. I don't mind people being against gay marrige, but it's none of your buisness wether or not two people get married and you have NO right to try and stop it, or stop them from thier constitutional right to persue happiness.

I am a woman.
I am a teacher.
I am a member of the teacher's union.
I am a conservative.
I am an issues/ values voter.
I am a Republican.
I used to be a Democrat.
I used to be married.
He bailed and now is living as a homosexual.
Our daughter loves her dad, but hates his lifestyle. I know her position is not unique, but it is among her friends.
I am YOUR child's teacher... I hug them when you have yelled at them in the morning.
I wipe their tears when mom and dad are divorcing. Some children could be coming from households where they have two dads at one household and a stepdad and a mom at their other household. And with gay marriage, kids may come from households with two dads, or two moms. A sense of belonging and "place" is so important to children... Will they end up with two dads and two stepdads when the marriage does not work out? I will love them as well and pray that they will heal.
Brokenness is a disease. A heart disease.
Our country needs healing.

I noticed a trend lately, those who are the harshest critics of blah blah, are usually the ones that are committing it.

Examples like:

Larry Craig
Oral Roberts
Rush Limbaugh
Elliot Spitzer
Mark Foley
etc etc etc

hmm makes me wonder if all the gay / lesbian haters are actually in closet.

I am a christian and while i dont like the idea of gay marraige and dont support it they have a right to do it.i read all the way at the top about a bunch of things the old testimate is mainly for jewish people when jesus came he basically set the basis for everything that we need no longer did it matter what you eat but what you bielieve in god.does your faith have an answer to literally every social and economic problum mine does its found in the new want financial freedom ( give unto ceasor ( govnt) what is ceasors and give to god what is god. 10 percent of what you make goes to god as a tithe and offering is what you offer.the word of god comes to me as i write many things plauge this world yet so many deny him.another religon is allowed to wear their headressing but i am not allowed to read and pray in school. becouse a few christians sin and even people around you sin do not worry of thier sin worry of yours.Yes sometimes christians sin we all do but it is to us to ask god to forgive us and renew us and make us clean and for us to not sin again and learn and not purposely sin.the bible says forgive 70x7. jesus died for our sin he bled from his side he bled from his head ,his hands, his feet.he was beatin in every place possibal.he was drenched in blood.horrifying.the whip they used had tiny spears on it and piercied him with every whip .his very skin came off .on top of that he was naked and ridiculed and made fun of. and he had to carry the cross like that in those condition.the icon of jesus sees him with clothing on the cross some layer of underwear well he didnt even have that .He went through all this and died and went to heaven for all the sin of the earth.

Remember that electing Barack Obama to the White House would be the greatest Civil Rights victory in History, as well as he greatest moment for America since the moon landing.

But it could all be ruined because the selfish, media-centric, gay marriage cultists will indirectly do everything they can to defeat Obama. They care only about their single, selfish cause, not the many causes of Democrats.

Democrats must just say NO to the selfish, gay marriage fanatics and support same sex marriage bans. We cannot allow 2004 to be replayed.

Democrats, don't listen to the gay marriage cultists and their shrewd, devious LIES. They care nothing about Obama winning in November.

Democrats MUST start supporting gay marriage bans, we must win in November.

I have always been told that church and state are to be seperate. The reasoning behind not allowing gay marriage that keeps coming up is a religious reason which should not be considered. Also if I remember correctly we the people put these judges where they are so in another way we have voted for what they feel is just.

I am surprised by Obama's stand. He obvious took this position without regard to its political consequence. This is not a winning position. He took the position on the death penalty for child rape that it was constitutional, Not the liberal position. Not a position I agree with either.

Obama is an independent not liberal or conservative. He has shown in his campaign that he spends money wisely. After years of partisan rancor, he can give that a rest. That is why I think he is worth voting for.

Posted by: Gator-ron | July 3, 2008 8:49 AM | Report abuse

Obama, just lost my vote.

I am an African American who lives in Iowa. The brother underestimates how emotional the gay marriage issue is in middle America. By supporting gay marriage, the man has clearly thrown away millions of votes of Christians and non-christians.

Gay marriage cost Gore and Kerry the presidency. Unfortunately, Obama has chosen the same path. Democrats never learn.

Add support for gay marriage to his other negatives: Rev. Wright, being Black, his problems with Hillary Democrats, his problems with Reagan Democrats, his extremely liberal, elitist stance on most issues and you have a new McGovern.

Obama get a new team of advisers!

you really didnt ask that did you?

If 2 people can live together then why get married at all? They can conduct themselves like their married so why do they have to be married?

Its the same reason a male and female want to get married.

I really cant believe someone asked that.

Posted by: F**ked Up | July 3, 2008 2:19 AM | Report abuse

I know I should be surprised by the ignorance I have seen on here, but I m not.

~For the Religious Christians

How many of you actually read the bible? Be truthful...Yeah I know you all select your favorite verse and know it by heart. Your quick to condemn gays because the bible says its not right, well an abomination according to a majority of translations.

"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. -- Leviticus 18:22"

yes the bible says this. The Bible also said that its ok to buy slaves like livestock.

"However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46)"

but there is also these passages they sound rather homosexual.

"And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 1 Samuel 18:1)"

"Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. (1 Samuel 18:3)"

"And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded. (1 Samuel 20:41)"

"I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. (2 Samuel 1:26)"

But there is this passage that confuses the hell out of me

"These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. (Revelations 14:4)"

So does that mean all gays, who were not defiled by women, shall be saved?

Its ironic that someone associated gays with pedophiles and adulters when one of the biggest segregations of pedophiles where CHRISTIAN priest. Hmm and one of the biggest adultery stories of this year was a CHRISTIAN Oral Roberts. Hmm maybe christians are the largest group of pedophiles, adulters, drug addicts, and criminals.

I find it hypocritical that the people who want to pose their morality on others, will scream in outrage when other impose their morality on them.

Its time to face the facts, just because you have morals doesnt mean your right. Even those with the best of intentions can turn evil. The funny thing is that peoples morals change only when it starts to affect them.

Posted by: f**ked Up | July 3, 2008 2:05 AM | Report abuse

Really, what's the deal. You can already live together. You can conduct yourselves as though you were married. Why do you need society's stamp of approval.

Posted by: David | July 3, 2008 1:38 AM | Report abuse

Just because the Bible says "thou shalt not do X," that doesn't mean X is immoral or bad.

If we were going by 'biblical law', then in America it would be legal to:

Own slaves
Beat slaves to death
Sacrifice children to God (Yes, there are cases in the King James Bible of this occuring)
Beat your children to death for swearing
Kill anybody who doesn't believe in God.

But you'd probably face death penalty, jail time, or at least fines for:

Eating pork, rabbits, or shellfish
Collecting firewood on the Sabbath
Wearing fiber blend cloth
Shaving your beard
Allowing two breeds of cattle to graze in the same field
Making engravings
Being a wizard
Touching a dead pig
Being homosexual

Isn't is nice that America doesn't go by these laws?

In seeking an amendment in California banning gay marriages, most conservatives and Republicans are trying to eshrine bigotry and discrimination into the state constitution. This is but one of numerous examples whereby most conservatives and Republicans are opposed to human rights, as well as individual freedom. The Republican party has come to represent Big Brother, in the Orweillan sense, the antithesis of liberty.

In a nutshell the only argument against gay marriage is that some people "just don't like it". Well that don't cut it folks. Just say it harms society doesn't make it true. Were's your evidence?

Yep, get ready for polygamy to be legal and widespread. Oh, and don't dare deny brother and sister, mother and son, grandpa and granddaughter the right to marry either when they make a conscientious choice not to have children together....just like gay people can't have children, these consenting adults won't either.

What a slippery slope to come!

Posted by: The Way | July 2, 2008 7:18 PM | Report abuse

"Try to explain all of this to children."

Actually, it's really easy explaining gay marriage to kids. You simply tell them that, when two people really love each other and want to spend their lives supporting and loving each other, they marry each other, and those two people can be a woman and a man, or two men, or two women.

Too bad that's so difficult a concept for so many _adults_ to grasp....

Craig, Craig, Craig. You are so small minded. This country is greate IN SPITE of the ignorant masses. It's great because of the genius of a small group of men who were fleeing such oppression. Read (and if possible try to understand) your history.

The "masses" that you hold so dear used to enslave other humans and denied half the population the right of partication because of their genitalia. The "masses" suck. They ALWAYS suck in any society thoughout all of history. It's only the clear minded minorities that persevere in the struggle for their rights that give ALL of us our rights and make this country great.

Posted by: Mike | July 2, 2008 7:02 PM | Report abuse

It's a common argument seen in these situations, how people should override anything a judge says if they do not agree. In this country it is true we are a democracy, but this is part of the checks and balances put into place to avoid corruption on any level, the people included. Certain unalienable rights are to be protected and cherished, and it's the duty of a judge to make certain said rights are not tromped upon and taken away, even by the people. We could very well still have slaves and segregation if that was left up to the people alone. We should not be a nation of hatred and persecution, you have the right to not like gay marriage, unions, partnerships, but it is not your right to take away the rights of others based upon religious and homophobic beliefs.

To the religious who fight so hard to bring suffering upon homosexuals and prolong this needless battle, remember that it is said that God loves everyone, Jesus promoted peace and happiness. To promote such hatred and persecution is hypocrisy and backwards within your own beliefs. Look beyond the phobia and remember the lessons taught and keep your hearts open to love one and all.

The primary purpose of the Constistution is to protect the rights of the minority from the will of the majority. A ban against gay marriage is no more that mass paranoia. Their is no evidence whatsoever that gay marriage in any way adversely effects society. In absence of such evidence a ban is purely and clearly discriminatory.

Personally, I am disgusted by fat people. They make me sick, particularly when they breed. If it were up to me all fat people would denied food until they reach a socially acceptable weight. There is also clear and convincing evidence that fat people are a tremendous burden on society. Their chosen behavior cost billions in healthcare cost that healthy people must absorb. Now why can't I and like minded people do anything about these disgusting, lazy people. Because the Constitution protects them in their "pursuit of happiness" (i.e. a cream filled long john). It's something called freedom. A a concession for my tolerating the behavior of fat people they, in turn, must tolerate my behavior which may or may not entail walking down the aisle with someone of the same sex.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not gay nor do I have any (known) gay friends or family members but I do feel threatened whenever the ignorant masses attempt to limit anyone's rights.

Nearly all laws are based on our concepts of morals. You cannot take morals out of laws, and a people's morals must be taken into account when making laws. We are nothing like Iran as all people here bow to the majority rule. If you feel so strongly convince your neighbor and get them to vote against the proposition. Just don't hide behind the judges to enforce your will on the majority. A small group of people forcing their morals on the majority is much more like Iran then a vote before the public.

Obama is a master of this game. Accounting for his numerous brave "present" votes in our Illinois Senate, he always had some such explanantion: well, I was for/against it but I didn't like the way it was worded; it went too far/not far enough. He is SO full of it. He doesn't know what he believes.

The reason California wants the amendment is because the court is defying the will of the people as expressed in a referendum. This was not just some statute some hack politicians thought up. This is more like a judge overturning a jury verdict: it doesn't happen very often and when it does, people don't like it.

Civil unions are only available in a very few states and not at all at the federal level and do not give even 25% of the benefits that marriage does. Homosexuality is not about sex. It is about being in a loving relationship where both partners are the same sex. Every argument that homosexuality is wrong applies to heterosexuals as well. It's just that all the bigots accept the behavior in heterosexuals and overlook it. So they displace the unacceptance of it onto a minority group that based on a stereotype forgetting that homosexual men and women are no different than anyone else in society. They are your brothers, sisters, neighbors, bosses, employees, religious leaders, political leaders, doctors, lawyers, nurses, etc.

If marriage is a union sanctioned by God between a man and a woman and there is supposed to be separation of church and state, then the over 1000 federal benefits given automatically to all married heterosexual couples should be ended immediately. Leave marriage without the benefits to the church and civil unions of all couples heterosexual and homosexual with the benefis to the government.

1. anal or oral copulation with a member of the opposite sex.
2. copulation with a member of the same sex.

voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than his or her lawful spouse.

Those seem to be two entirely different things to me.

It's also against the law in some states to have sex with the curtains open. These are called "dumb laws" and the sodomy one is lumped in with it.

Try winning one argument before starting another.

I hate many types of people. I don't care if I'm labeled prejudice or not, really. I just make fun of people based on their choices, not what they were wired to be like when they were born.

I just think it's funny how many religious people talk about how much God loves everyone, but hates them at the same time and will send them to Hell if they don't change (change their genetics... kind of hard).

Old and infertile couples should not get married because they are not able to have children
Dogs have legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
Male and female are required to raise a child - hence single parents should be forbidden to raise children
Heterosexuals have made a conscious choice to be straight.

Gay marriage has been legal in Holland and Germany - to name just two countries - for years. No sign of any adverse effects on "marriage" or "society".
The opposition to gay marriage is what is spewed from pulpits - spreading holy hatred and discrimination. And the congregation has long given up their own sense of responsibility to determine what is right and wrong. Hence we still have this bigotry rife in society....the real criminal here is religion...organized religion which programs its followers and spells out what is right and wrong...sheep in the flock is the right term as people follow meekly and unthinkingly what is told to them.

Also, religions don't matter in this issue (or any) because all of them are nonsense.

There was a time when we used to live almost exclusively by the Bible. It was called the Dark Ages.

Just because someone is consensual, does not make it right to have sex with them.

Posted by: Kevin | July 2, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

America was founded with christian values. Marriage should be between a man and a woman. Civil unions are recognized. That's not judging the individual, it's judging the sanctity of marriage. Try to explain all of this to children.

I like how some people like to compare homosexuals to rapists, pedophiles (with a "ph", not an "f"). People who rape and murder and molest are natural, it happens. It's not necessarily "normal" because it's something that that affects the other person involved.

If a gay man has sex with another consensual man, that is normal and completely fine. If a man rapes another man, that is rape, and that is affecting the other man negatively.

It's just a bit messed up that any of this needs to be explained in detail. Heterosexual also doesn't have a "d" in it.

I thank you for pointing out that God is not confused. Have faith though. Some of us still have a moral compass.

Posted by: Lori | July 2, 2008 5:26 PM | Report abuse

Reading the comments posted proves there is no moral standard in this country any more. Anything goes! We once lived by the Bible as our standard. Those of you who claim homosexuality is acceptable by biblical standards is not really reading your Bible. It is NOT acceptable. Neither is homophobia. All human beings deserve respect, love, and compassion. But God is not as confused as we are. He does not teach us this behavior is unacceptable in His Word, then turn around and create the very behavior. Those of you who think Obama speaks "Truth" need to take another look. . . and to does he, at HIS Bible.

"If Obama was a California citizen, then his vote would matter. Right now it doesn't, does it?"

He probably would not vote on it anyway. He has a habit of that.

By the way, don't get mad at my comments. I do love gay people. They are after all God's creatures. Because I have an opinion on the subject that differs from yours must mean I am a bad person. So, it is not right for me to judge, but you can do it all you want. I am not angered by homosexuality. I am deeply concerned about it.

Posted by: Kevin | July 2, 2008 5:21 PM | Report abuse

I don't agree that this is just election year politics. This issue would not even be before the California voters if those few judges hadn't overturned the firm opinion of the majority on this issue. What is the point here. California's gays and lesbians do not get one additional right in this state by calling it a marriage. The only point of this was to overturn the will of the people in other states through the judicial process instead of the legislative process. I support the change in the constitution if the people make that choice, I just don't like the courts making laws for me.

The vast majority of kids do turn to tbe hederosexal. Is it wrong when a pedofile is born attracted to kids. He was born that way. We all call that a sickness. Why? Because it is not natural or normal. Can they help it? We still know it is a sickness.

Posted by: Kevin | July 2, 2008 5:17 PM | Report abuse

And why is homosexuality a problem ?
Its just a bio-sociological phenomena.
Many animals are known to have preference for that, so its not uncommon phenomena.
Its just that homosexuals are lesser in numbers among us, if they were majority, I am sure somebody among them would have asked to solve the heterosexuality problem.

Wanted to know in what way it is harming others or the society, if somebody has a preference on way of life and as long it doesnt hurt anybody it should be allowed, because such freedom is intrinsic to happiness of that or those persons.

Not many years back slavery was very intrinsic to many parts of American economy, and when as moved on, it was abolished. Similarly it is time that we embrace similar change in out ethical and moral standards. Thats called moving forward.

I am amazed why this such a big issue in America (a developed nation ?), while there are more pressing issues - poverty, lack of education, crime, global warming, HIV, etc.

Yeah, because how DARE homosexuals make us actually TALK to our children about sexuality? I mean, who do these people think they are? Human beings capable of love and compassion for other people, despite their gender? Pfft! As if! We also probably should make the black people sit in the back of the buses again, because I don't want to bother explaining why they aren't white like my child. Because being black is a choice, you know? Just like homosexuality. Actually, let's just send them all back to Africa -- that way, we just don't need to talk to our children about anything. Because after a long day of hating everyone for being a little different or for loving someone that is the same gender as them, I just don't feel like talking, especially to my own children.

Get a life. The fact that anyone could hate another person for loving (or even just having sex with) someone of the same gender is disturbing. What someone else does in their life, unrelated to you, is just that -- UNRELATED to you and DOESN'T AFFECT you. And the fact that people like this continue to exist makes a mockery of humanity....

It amazes me when evangelical folks claim they aren't bigots when I read comments like some of the ones on this site. Queers have been likened to drug addicts, murderers and child rapists, and been called defective.

With all of the genetic differences that abound in nature what makes it so hard to believe that there could be one sequence of genes that, in a given environment, will produce a queer child (wait, do you believe that genetics exists)? Just because someone has only been attracted to the opposite sex doesn't mean that everyone is wired that way.

If you can't see the difference between loving someone of the same sex and murdering someone, raping a child or being addicted to heroin, then I think you need to do some soul searching. Or, accept that you're a bigot.

In response to Kevin's comment about a kid who grows up in an abusive home turning out abusive.....that should also hold true in regard to heterosexual marriages - ie the kids should turn out heterosexual shouldn't they?

Posted by: Bernard | July 2, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

Gay is not a disease - you can't "fix" it. It's a discrimination to ban them from getting married. They long for a stable family just like the rest of us. The society will be much happier as a whole if they can unite with their loved ones. If the bible says being straight is wrong, I'll bet not ONE straight guy can "convert" to the gay side.

Let's hope though this time he won't flip and flop on this subject.

Why do you continue to think it is a disease when we, like HUNDREDS of other creatures are, as we are completely aware of, born this way. And we're probably supposed to be this way. There is nothing to cure but your fear. Get out of the dark ages.

We can also love people and not think what they are doing is moral. When two gay people are married, it comes out of the bedroom and into the eyes of our children. They are then under the belief that this is ok and not a problem. Let's work on fixing the cause of homosexuality and not just excepting it as a casual form of living. Love the person not the problem. You same people think we should try to cure addicts. You could say that they are not hurting others...???

Posted by: Kevin | July 2, 2008 4:58 PM | Report abuse

I dont support gay marriage either, but a Constitutional ban is absurd and will never actually be attempted. it is just an election year stunt to get the hillbilly vote then ignore the issue once elected. just like bush did in the 04 election

Good for him for refusing to engage on such a ridiculous issue. His position is just right: not spending political capital to promote gay marriage (which, I'm sorry, is just not that important relative to the carnage in Iraq and our tanking economy), but also refusing to get on the gaybashing bandwagon.

Posted by: csdiego | July 2, 2008 4:57 PM | Report abuse

If you are going to use the bible and say that all things are possible through him, just let people rape children and kill the innocent. If that is there desire, then we should not judge them. This is silly. If you people think that this gay marriage will not hurt the innocent, I challenge you to look at a kid that grows up in an abusive home. The kid will most likely be abusive. Some things are a problem that we should not accept. We should try to find a solution and not say that it is ok. When someone is born with a defect, we try to fix it. We don't try to conform the rest of the world around it.

No news here, other than further black-and-white confirmation that McCain is only a Maverick to the desires of the American people.
He's no more middle-of-the-isle than Bush was; the idea that he's somehow going to appeal to independents is proof that our mainstream media representatives know less about politics than its viewer/readership does.

... And Barney Frank is wildly professing that for the first time in his adult life he's loving America, and a black man...

Seriously though, it is about time that someone stands up on the national stage and shakes up the evangelicals that right wing politicians have brainwashed.

I'm evangelical, but I don't judge other people on how they live their lives, as long as they aren't hurting others. There are so many passages in the Bible that basically say that anything is possible with the Lord, and that we shouldn't be judging anyone.

The right wing has preached a divisive, superficial religion to their followers.

Republicans and their libertarians cousins should not want the government in people's bedrooms.

Every large extended family - the Cheneys even - probably has a gay person in it. It's time the Republicans stopped being hypocrites. We are supposed to all love each other, not just the one's who fit this or that mold.
