Obama Still Faces a Big Task in Telling Voters Who He Is

By Dan Balz
Barack Obama began Independence Day week with a speech defending his patriotism and a plan to end the week campaigning in states few Democrats bother with in a general election. That is a measure of how far he has come in the last 12 months and how far he still has to travel to reach the White House.

A year ago this week, Obama celebrated July 4th in red-white-and-blue fashion with a campaign swing through the Iowa heartland. Nobody then was questioning his patriotism. The biggest question he faced was whether he could overcome a slow start to his campaign and defeat Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. Having proved he could overcome the Clinton machine, he must now prove he can overcome questions about who he is and what he believes.

Obama's speech in Independence, Mo., on Monday was Obama doing what he does best, which is to take sometimes-difficult ideas and issues and speak about them in both the most personal of terms and the loftiest. In tone and structure, the patriotism speech was remarkably similar to the one he delivered days after the storm of controversy broke over his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.

His motivation for dealing with the topic was intensely political -- just as was his decision to address Wright's incendiary sermons with a speech that called for a renewed dialogue on race in America. He was in both cases attempting to solve a political problem by taking a controversy about him -- about his values and beliefs -- and enlarging the discussion into one that he hopes could touch all Americans.

Look first at what he said about his own problem. "Throughout my life, I have always taken my deep and abiding love for this country as a given," he said. "It was how I was raised; it is what propelled me into public service; it is why I am running for President. And yet, at certain times over the last 16 months, I have found, for the first time, my patriotism challenged - at times as a result of my own carelessness, more often as a result of the desire by some to score political points and raise fears about who I am and what I stand for."

Later, in an even more telling passage, he described a hesitant and perhaps confused young Barack Obama attempting to come to terms with where he fit in the society into which he was born -- and finding an anchor in the idea of America. "For a young man of mixed race," he said, "without firm anchor in any particular community, without even a father's steadying hand, it is this essential American idea - that we are not constrained by the accident of birth but can make of our lives what we will - that has defined my life, just as it has defined the life of so many other Americans."

The speech was more than Obama's effort to place his own life and story squarely into the American mainstream. It was a challenge to all Americans to resist anyone's efforts to use patriotism as a political weapon and to define patriotism in terms that include both flag waving and loyalty to country as well as dissent and a commitment to the diversity that long has helped define America as unique.

"That is why, for me, patriotism is always more than just loyalty to a place on a map or a certain kind of people," he said. "Instead, it is also loyalty to America's ideals - ideals for which anyone can sacrifice, or defend, or give their last full measure of devotion. I believe it is this loyalty that allows a country teeming with different races and ethnicities, religions and customs, to come together as one."

Obama's carefully crafted speech was partly overshadowed by the discordant words of one of his newest surrogates, retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark. Clark's ham-fisted put down of John McCain -- "I don't think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president" -- gave McCain an easy comeback and put Obama in the uncomfortable position of having to use a speech designed to defend himself to defend his rival as well. So much for careful planning.

The patriotism speech underscored how Obama has emerged from his nomination battle with Clinton both stronger and weaker than he was earlier in the year. Stronger because he is battle-hardened in a way few nominees ever are; weaker because he has lost some of the luster of freshness he enjoyed at the start of the campaign and because, despite 18 months on the trail, he remains not yet fully formed in the minds of many voters.

Throughout the campaign, Obama has refused to accept the constraints on his potential that others have tried to impose. His schedule this week illustrates that. He will celebrate the July 4th holiday in Montana, an admitted long shot in the general election but in a red region of the country where his candidacy has shown clear appeal. His general election strategy--he is advertising in states like Alaska and Georgia--speaks to what his advisers see as the potential for a sizeable victory in the Electoral College (or at a minimum multiple routes to the magic 270 electoral votes).

That has long been an underlying reality of Obama's candidacy, the potential for something new and different, for breaking the mold. But the controversy over his patriotism reminds his campaign that new and different works only when it is not threatening or exotic. Striking the right balance remains Obama's big challenge.

Really now; does anybody really care at this point? Simply put, Obama is a fast talking, gum smacking, and shuck and jive lawyer from Chicago's south side who has been revealed for all to see. Obama is a friend and business conspirator of Rezko who now resides in prison, a friend of a leader of the once murderous Weather Underground, a twenty year close friend of Reverend Wright and the famous Heretic Bishop, both of whom espouse hatred, racial separatism and contempt for most Americans. Finally, lets not forget that Obama has a local record of being anti-2nd Amendment, pro-abortion; including partial birth late term abortions, anti-death penalty, anti-energy (no drilling and no nuclear power), and loose with the truth about who he really is.

There now Obama; that wasn't so hard ... was it?

The republicans can't run on their record and they have a disapponting 71 year old candidate. So, the only thing left is lies and smears which they happen to be very good at, as anyone reading this thread knows. The problem is the country has been saturated the this Bush style politics for eight years and is heartily sick of it. So get your vomit bags ready! We will have have to put up with these mindless bile-spewing rednecks for the next four months.

We know exactly who Barack Obama is now and he's certainly not the new man, the new politician and the wonder of wonders many progressives were led to believe he was. While Obama received massive support from progressives during the primaries, he kept quiet as to his real intentions in regard to FISA and other issues such as the death penalty in regard to cases of rape in "limited circumstances", not cutting back on all of Bush's tax cuts for the rich and now his willingness to support expanding Bush's faith-based discriminatory hiring and firing practices with government monies etc. We already knew he was against Gay marriage and about his refusal to commit to bringing all the troops home from Iraq even by 2013 (this, from the man who wants everyone to believe he's going to end our involvement there) but hope is what kept our support alive and now we know that too existed only in our vivid imaginations. What else is he hiding up that sleeve?

At obama's press conference about expanding government's involvement with religion, he made it very clear and seemed surprised that progressives thought he was one of them. All this was news to him. What a farce and what a slap in the face to those who gave him the nomination and a lot of us thought, shamefully so, that it was Hillary Clinton who couldn't be trusted. Anyone who thinks Obama will truly end the war in Iraq or change the right-leaning direction of the Supreme Court is a fool. Obama wants to bring us together remember and would compromise as he's done so badly so far and so much that any of his appointees to the court will have more in common with the likes of Scalia than anyone resembling a liberal who gives a hoot about abortion etc. Any legislation he proposes would be so watered down too as to become meaningless, as meaningless as Obama has turned out to be. On election day, I'll write in mother's name for president of the United States.

It is funny when a political journalist of Dan Baltz's repute goes ga-ga over a speech full of lofty words. Is it difficult for someone to write a speech full of lofty words? The most difficult thing is whether you practise what you are preaching. I am not sure whether Dan Baltz or other people in the media, who are so enamored by Obama, lack the experience or the political sense to miss that point! Shouldn't one showcase himself by holding his own actions as an example to paractising the ideals that he portrays to be holding dear to his heart, and not by delivering some high powered speech laced with a creative expression of passion all over the face, while being teleprompted. Why does one have to choose a town named Independence and not other place? Doesn't it show that this effort is a kind of showmanship, more symbolic in nature than anything else? Sen Obama himself said, while doing a reverse on his stand on Nafta, that he got carried away by rhetoric during the primary campaign. It seems that his campaign, like many others is full of symbolism, showmanship and rhetoric than anything of substance. He said that he disavows moving around with lobbyists, but a report on ABC news a couple of weeks ago disclosed some of his political backers gained from him, when their firm got the chance to manage a chunk of state welfare funds. What impression can one form from all these facts?

I know of Harry Truman and Obama you're no Truman. Harry was straight talker, no pandering with Presidency put upon him, not someone who hasn't even finished half of his first term in the Senate with no real accomplishment to measure you on except a great speech at the 2004 Dem Convention. Just like Mario Cuomo who gave an inspiring speech at their previous convention, but his actual work experience seem more plausible for the position.

http://politicallydrunk.blogspot.com/2008/06/why-obama-dean-fear-4-million.html

This weekends PR stunt or "unity" fest underscores a problem for the presumptive Democratic nominee. The problem can be summed up in one word: PUMA.

Since the end of the Democratic primaries the DNC has been plagued by this growing group of Hillary Clinton supporters who have pledged to vote against Barack Obama and reform the Democratic Party that is clearly more interested in power than moving the country forward. In recent weeks Democratic leadership has bombarded the press with a message of unity and a fall-back to the talking points meant to divide this country such as abortion.

So how much of problem does PUMA and Just Say No Deal represent to the Obama campaign?

A huge one and here's why:

PUMA and Just Say No Deal are comprised of Hillary Clinton's most ardent supporters and represent what Richard Nixon once referred to as the "Silent Majority". They are middle class values voters, the "Reagan Democrats", who position trust, personal and religious beliefs, a profound love for their country, and political education at the forefront of their political decision making. The PUMAS embody the fighting spirit of our founding fathers, driven by a belief that our country, not our political parties, should come first.

The patriotism thing is so easy. Obama is taking great risks to his personal safety by running for President. To say he is not patriotic is absurd.

Wow. I am amazed at the lack of education about the candidates in most of the comments here. I agree with those that say fear is the only tool the Republicans have against Obama. It played out well for Shrub and his cronies to accomplish their goal of invading Iraq regardless of the fact that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and we were lied to about Saddam having WMDs. But fear will not work this time! Sadly, I recognize that there are still many racists and bigots in this world who would like to spread hate and lies about Obama simply because he doesn't look like you or have your same life experience. Open your eyes and use a brain cell or two to truly educate yourself with the facts and make an INFORMED decision about who you will support and why.

Here are some FACTS for those of you who have none apparently and continue to try and use the shameful "He's a Secret Muslim" fear tactic and lie....

CNN Reporter: I've Been to Madrassas in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and Obama's Indonesian Elementary School Is Nothing Like That. On January 22, CNN Reporter John Vause reported, "I came here to Barack Obama's elementary school in Jakarta, looking for what some are calling an Islamic Madrassa, like the ones that teach hate and violence in Pakistan and Afghanistan.. I've been to those Madrassas in Pakistan and Wolf, this school is nothing like that." [CNN, Situation Room, 1/22/07]

Indonesian Embassy Says That Besuki School Attended by Barack Obama "Has Never Been an Islamic Madrassah Type of School." A letter from the Indonesian Embassy stated that "Sekolah Dasar Negeri Besuki in Menteng, Jakarta, Indonesia has always been a public school. It has never been an Islamic madrassa type of school." [Letter From Ambassador Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat to Senator Barack Obama, 1/25/07]

Time's Joe Klein: Attacks On Obama's Elementary School Are "Laughable" Given the Moderate Form of Islam Practiced in Indonesia, Especially in Those Days." Time's Joe Klein wrote, "The effort to slime Barack Obama has begun in the slimiest possible way." Describing attacks on Obama's elementary school, Klein wrote, "Now, this is nonsense of course. Obama's stepfather was not a Muslim extremist (among other things, he worked for Shell Oil). Obama attended public school for two years in Indonesia, in addition to the two years he spent in catholic schools--although, as Obama's staff points out, Indonesia is a Muslim country, so the public schools undoubtedly reflect the dominant relgious culture. The notion that the Obama's school was a Wahabi madrasa is laughable, given the moderate form of Islam practiced in Indonesia, especially in those days." [Time Blog, 1/22/07]

OBAMA IS A PRACTICING CHRISTIAN

Obama Was Baptized And Attends Church Once a Week When He is Able. In the Audacity of Hope, Obama wrote, "I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ one day and be baptized." In 2004, he "attend[ed] the 11 a.m. Sunday service at Trinity in the Brainerd neighborhood every week -- or at least as many weeks as he is able. His pastor, Wright, has become a close confidant." When asked about his decision to be baptized, Obama said "Kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt I heard God's spirit beckoning me," he said of his walk down the aisle of the Trinity United Church of Christ. "I submitted myself to his will and dedicated myself to discovering his truth." [Audacity of Hope, p.208, Chicago Sun Times, 4/5/04; AP 6/28/06]

Obama Reads The Bible, Finds Time to Pray On Campaign Trail. The Chicago Sun-Times wrote, "Obama says he reads the Bible, though not as regularly as he'd like, now that he's on the campaign trail. But he does find time to pray. 'It's not formal, me getting on my knees,' he says. 'I think I have an ongoing conversation with God... I'm constantly asking myself questions about what I'm doing, why I am doing it.'" [Chicago Sun Times, 4/5/04]

Obama Held His Personal Bible When He Was Sworn-In As A U.S. Senator. "...Even before the makeshift office was up and running in the basement of a Senate building, even before he raised his hand Tuesday to take the oath of office as the junior senator from Illinois, Barack Obama was already a political rock star and a celebrated new face in Congress. He arrived Tuesday, his first official day in the Capitol.... In the circles he runs in now, celebrity status is checked at the cloakroom door...When it was finally time to take the oath, he held his personal Bible, as family from as far away as Kenya watched from the visitors' gallery above. His daughters, Malia, 6, and Sasha, 3, in velvet dresses and patent leather shoes, bounced in their chairs when he looked up and waved." [Los Angeles Times, 1/5/05]

McCain even Flip Flopped to a new wife!

Posted by: Anonymous | July 1, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Daddio's summary of the relationship of Carol Shepp and John McCain leaves out some important facts.

He fails to mention, for example, that Carol Shepp had already been divorced once when she met and married John McCain, who adopted her children by her first marriage and raised them as his own.

He also fails to consider that, when John McCain was released after over 5 years in a Vietnamese POW camp, to pick up the pieces of his life and marriage, both McCains were severely injured.

Before Barack Obama turned the Democratic Party I used to be proud of into something more closely resembling the bad old Republican Party of yore, most Democrats would have understood that a five-year absence would strain any marriage. For pity's sake!

And a five-year absence combined with severe physical torture to the husband and severe physical injury to the wife, moreover, would be understandably difficult for any couple to mend, despite their best efforts, and perhaps particularly so when one of the parties (in this case, the wife, Carol) already had a history of failed marriage.

The practice of politics by spreading rumors ia a throwback to the Nixon era, revived in modern politics by Karl Rove. And while it's disappointing to see Obama's paid "commenters" stooping so low, it's not surprising as hiring people to do the "dirty work" of spreading lies and innuendo so that Obama can maintain his lofty holier-than-thou position is the clear modus operandi of the Obama campaign.

The hypocrisy of the Democratic Party, Barack Obama and his campaign strategists make me ashamed to have been a Democrat for the last 35 years.

I frequently feel like the Republican religious right has hijacked my religion, and now I feel like some racist, sexist, liberal left nutcases have hijacked my political party!

So thank you, Senator Obama, for spearheading the rise of the "religious left" and the destruction of a party whose highminded values once meant something. If elected, I'm sure your legacy will be one of political infamy, right alongside that of George W. Bush.

Mr "Flip Flop" McCain keeps adding to his list of insane flip flops!

* McCain gave up on his signature policy issue, campaign-finance reform, and won't back the same provision he sponsored just a couple of years ago.

* McCain used to oppose Bush's tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.

* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June, he abandoned his own legislation.

* McCain used to think that Grover Norquist was a crook and a corrupt shill for dictators. Then McCain got serious about running for president and began to reconcile with Norquist.

* McCain took a firm line in opposition to torture, and then caved to White House demands.

* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he's pro-ethanol.

* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.

* He's both for and against overturning Roe v. Wade.

* McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as "an agent of intolerance" in 2002, but has since decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans "deserved" the 9/11 attacks. (Indeed, McCain has now hired Falwell's debate coach.)

* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending "dirty money" to help finance Bush's presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.

* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.

Feel free to add to this growing list...

If Senator Obama would like to reintroduce himself, there are a few things I'd like to know:

1. What was his first job? For example, did he throw papers or work at McDonald's? Perhaps he mowed lawns or work as a lifeguard in the summer? In other words, what was his first job as a kid?

2. How did he pay for college? Did he work part-time in one of the university administrative offices, for example, as some kids do? Work as a waiter? In a convenience store? Hold a summer job in a factory, or as a roadworker?

3. Will he give my tax dollars to "faith-based" charities run by racists like Rev. Wright and Rev. Pfleger, whose good deeds incorporate messages of hate and discrimination (a methodology which, incidentally, strikes me as very much like that used by Hamas in order to gain popular support and undermine the government)?

"When McCain was finally released in 1973, his first wife, Carol, had not seen him for six years, and had herself had a terrible car accident.

McCain embarked on a series of affairs, the last one with Cindy Hensley, the daughter of an Arizona beer baron, who he met at a military function in Hawaii in 1979.

They were married a year later, one month after he divorced his disabled wife, Carol. McCain married in to political power.

Cindy's wealthy and well-connected father offered a gateway into Arizona's business and political elite. At first, McCain toyed with a career working for his father-in-law, perhaps in PR. But soon the political world opened up in the form of a vacant congressional seat."

o.k. enough with the fake soldier bashing - that's doesn't come from any Obama supporter.

obama supporters back our soldiers doing their jobs with honor, and we back caring for them when they come home broken and support the new GI bill for when they get out that mccain was against 'because we might lose some reenlistments'. incredible.

as an obama supporter I have respect for the soldiers that sign up for our armed forces because they have no other job or career prospects due to profit-taking, job- offshoring, corporations that mccain works for. then they end up getting shipped out and killed or maimed for a sham. what we don't support is missions based on lies, propaganda and media manipulation.

this recession that's pounding all of you non rich americans like me is caused by the incredible deficit spending, reckless tax cuts for the wealthy, complete lack of regulation of speculative housing and investment markets, and a reckless illegal war that has taken $1Trillion of our dollars. Mccain supports/supported all of these fiascos.

It's time to move on from the past and scare mongering republicans.

Welcome President Obama!

Also good points on your part. Chickening out was a bad choice of wording. He didn't want to debate Clinton on her last invitation. Same with the ten Town Hall meetings with McCain, and he did not accept McCain's invitation to join him in a visit to Iraq. Call it whatever you like, but these were unaccepted challenges he refused. It doesn't speak well for the stand-up approach needed for the presidency.

Both Obama and McCain are members of a political class that continues to fool everyone by pitting them against each other with this "2 party" ideology. Obama and the democratic leadership aren't standing up to the white house on Iraq, Iran, or domestic spying. McCain has betrayed conservatism at every turn.

Why do you all argue about them when both will continue the same poisonous policies of big government, corporate welfare, illegal warfare, and inflation?

The democrats overlooked Dennis Kucinich, and the republicans overlooked Ron Paul. Both are men of true character and intellect, unlike these shills.

Combining all the current state polls to-date shows that if the election were held today, Obama would have 317 electoral votes, McCain 221, with the following states being lost to the Democrats compared to 2004: Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, New Mexico, Ohio, Virginia.

We can NOT allow a man who does not look like the majority of Americans AND who has the middle name of Hussein achieve such a landslide victory. For one thing, it would play right into the hands of the rest of the world who are all rooting for Obama. Why elect someone the foreigners want, we have to keep them fearful and distainful of us if we are to have any hopes of continuing our world dominance and securing the Iraqi oil.

Please, help do everything you can to defeat Obama. Use ANY tool and I mean ANY tool (such as Clintons4McCain) to defeat him. No holds barred in this election, it's a crisis and we need to get down and dirty.

To Daddio on the Paddio:

This is exactly my point. The same process is replaying itself. Barack and Axelrod learned all to well from Rove and Bush. The 24/7 "news" channels and print media continue to spread the propaganda fed to them by the candidates. Bush sucked as President - no one disagrees with that. McCain disagrees with Bush on so many issues that the fanatical base of the Republican Party see him as a closet liberal. But, Barack and Axelrod continue to paint everyone but BHO as a continuation of Bush. Even Rahm Immanuel is spreading the big lie - that McCain is the reincarnation of Bush. He isn't. McCain hates GW. There will never, ever be another GW unless we the fail in our duty as American citizens to hold these jokers to their word. Political posturing on NAFTA? Supporting the FISA bill "compromise"? Wearing a flag pin, are we? Never was in church when Wright was on one of his anti-American tirades - in 20 years? That wasn't Barack starting his political career in B. Ayres' living room? Believe you in faith based charities receiving government, do you? C'mon Daddio - you actually believe what comes out of this joker's mouth?

Posted by "Toxic Avenger" (who, by the way, is a cartoon character): What it boils down to as an american, who would you trust to watch your back in a foxhole[...]

~~~
Really? Is that what it boils down to? Who's got my back in a foxhole? Dammit; I haven't even *started* to dig my foxhole yet.
I was too busy running my little company and raising my kids and loving my wife and enjoying my family and friends and helping my neighbors and going to church and going to school and keeping my yard up and recycling and volunteering to help those less fortunate than me and being politically involved. (You know, being a "liberal," which is what I am).
Alright...I'll admit right now: I didn't even know I was going to need a foxhole. Am I only going to need it if John McCain wins or does it not matter who the president is? It seems like I should have had one the past eight years what with the escalating violence all around the world. Is it just too late?
And all this time I though my decision would not be based on who I would prefer to have in my foxhole (which, again, I didn't even know about). I was looking at the issues and the records of both these fine men and which would be best for my community. I've always been a fan of John McCain, but I do more typically vote Democrat, and I gotta tell ya' this new kid? Barack Obama? He's got a really compelling message and the hope...yes, the hope...that this country could actually right itself is exciting. I don't get that feeling from McCain, I don't think, though he'd clearly be at least an adequate President (and we haven't had one of those for *at least* six or seven years as far as I can tell) and probably much better than that. I'm not in the camp that considers him "more of George W. Bush."
Oh man; you have really ruined my day with this foxhole thing.
A first thought: Barack Obama is younger and probably has better eyesight and a better throwing arm (assuming my foxhole will have grenades...should I get some?). That's a positive.
Then again, John McCain probably has better stories if it turns out my foxhole in a suburb of Ohio isn't exactly on the front lines of...of...of what, exactly?
In any case...I'm going to work on this. I swear it.
Obama doesn't face a big task- he is winning! And he has the wind at his back: a huge financial advantage, massive grassroots and ground operational support, the high ground on the key policy issues, a charismatic advantage... and the list goes on. After the debates people will be more comfortable with Obama. And in late October, when Gen Powell endorses the Jr Sen from Illinois, it will be over. Turnout among young voters and blacks will break the current polling models.
I know that the media has a vested interested in making this a close election, but this is Obama's to lose, today's polls understate his real advantage, and this thing could become an obvious landslide very soon.
The guy can run rings around any of the WaPo staff, so they get Dan Balz out of his cupboard a couple of times a week to attempt another hatchet job on him.
Seems to be the task of the year:
Harrass Obama on every possible occasion. Make sure we all know what problems he faces, what rumors are spread about him, what sinners he consorted with in his younger days - all in the public interest, you understand - etc etc etc . . .
While the really interesting stuff - like the smoke coming out of the Vice President's building, the millions of "lost" e-mails, the "coalition" of the bribed and threatened all over the world - well, I'll be danged - it just doesn't seem to arouse the slightest interest in the staff of one of the country's former leading newspapers.
Perhaps I'll start my own paper and instruct my staff to make it a priority to hound the staff of other newspapers for info on their personal problems, on rumors spread about them, on the sinners they used to hang out with in their younger days, etc etc etc . . .
Come on, WaPo; Obama is going to be President unless Cheney accidentally fires another shotgun in his vicinity.
Why don't you just help the guy?
America DOES need help, you know.
Just as John McCain has collaborated with the Vietnamese enemy, he has been collaborating with the leaders of the Mexican Reconquista movement for some time. Among other outrages, he was the keynote speaker at the 2004 annual conference of the National Council of La Raza. He told the crowd: "It is in our national interest to bring the 8 to 12 million undocumented immigrants out of the shadows and allow them an opportunity to become citizens of this great nation."
After the massive illegal alien protests last year, McCain made the following statement: "If such demonstrations continue, I think we will have a bill for the President to sign soon. The more debate, the more demonstrations, the more likely we will prevail."
Under Sen. McCain's immigration bill, even members of Mexican drug gangs would receive amnesty by simply signing a statement in which they renounce their gang affiliation.
"obama's a racist muslim who wants to see america weak"
"if you don't support obama then you're a racist"
"he's a socialist who wants to raise your taxes and destroy the economy"
"blah, blah, blah."
look, my righties and lefties, in case you haven't noticed, america is already weak. our military is spread paper thin. our currency is on the way to being on par with the peso courtesy of a ridiculous trade deficit, and borrowing insane amounts of $$ from the chinese to fund the "war on terror". yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are at war with an EMOTION.
the housing market has collapsed, healthcare is unaffordable, gasoline is unaffordable, and groceries are starting to become unaffordable, our infrastructure is falling apart, all while the richest 1% of this country have gotten richer & our wages haven't increased at all for us lowly plebes.
hey self-serving american lemmings, guess what? taxes NEED to go up! he doesn't plan on crushing your $45,000 salary with them. he's going to raise CAPITAL GAINS, which are taxed EXPONENTIALLY LESS that our wages. i hate to break it to you, but other than selling your home (if it's not under foreclosure already), you will probably never see a cent of capital gains money unless you're pulling six figures plus and even know how to invest (which 99% of americans don't. not your fault though, no one teaches us). are you that retarded to not realize that the rich 1% of this country use the media (which they own) to divide us along race and class lines? divide and conquer, my constituents. that's the best way to defend the system that their $ has created. hey, you have to give it to them, at least they know how to defend their own self interest, unlike most of us.
sorry lefties, i'm not necessarity on your side either. i'm considering taking a contract with blackwater and capitalizing on the artificial war economy while i can. i may be taking blood money in your eyes, but unfortunately singing kumbiya by the campfire won't feed my 2 kids. i think this is the 1st all volunteer war in the history of america. don't worry, when iran kicks off i'll probably see some of you out there. (hopefully i'll mostly see people who voted for bush the 2nd time and haven't served though. that would be a riot!)
but my point is this: deprogram yourselves from the main stream media. if you're not ridiculously rich or connected, you're just going to have to flow with the tide and do your best to survive in the world. welcome to adulthood. don't let the mainstream media, and even your political party or candidate of choice spoonfeeds to you in 30 second ads, soundbites and videos on youtube lull you into the stupidity you were in when you voted for bush the 2nd time. read the issues (not the smears) and the positions (not the viral email YOU MORONS) and VOTE INFORMED.
really, how hard is that?
I am not discounting the fact that there are a lot of idiots out there, just look at Appalachia, however they weren't going to vote for Obama anyway.
Ploufe needs to get Obama's head out of his butt and talk to Americans about things that matter. Every moment spent discussing flag pins does nothing to save a soldier, feed a baby, or reduce the deficit.
Sen. Obama has plenty of experience. And you know it. This inexperience argument is nonsense. What has John McCain learned from 30 years in the Senate? I'll tell you: He's learned how to be a Senator. Our job as citizen's is to listen to the candidates and then vote for the one who we think will give the country the leadership it needs. If you feel that's Sen. McCain, then fine. But this experience nonsense has to stop. Some of our greatest presidents (actually, most) have resumes similar in size and scope to Sen. Obama's. And it's in no way the resume of an "empty suit."
There are a lot of maroons here spouting nonsense about Marx and Marxist ideology that don't have the foggiest notion of the underpinnings of Marx's writings. For the subset of you who can actually read, open your mind and take some time to read what he has to say. In some ways, he champions the contemporary equivalent of a small business owner. Most of what he says is about social and economic justice and the poison of large aggregations of capital (i.e., large corporations).
Whatever, even posting this is a waste of time.
Most of you maroons feel that you have a grasp on information based upon what Sean, Rush, Glenn, or some other voice box spouts rather than actually reading the source. For such fools, Marx = socialism = Soviet Communism. That simple equality works for you and there's nothing that anybody reasonable can say to change your small mind. At least the shouting hosts make a living off of their parsed poison. You all have no excuse except for your own colossal ignorance. What it boils down to as an american, who would you trust to watch your back in a foxhole, John McCain (a real american hero) or Barack Hussein Obama (non-military, supported by american terrorist Bill Ayers). It must really hurt being a liberal, always angry, always on the losing end, always having to have your candidate pretend he's patriotic and conservative.
Not to me - I trust my fellow Americans and judge people on their merits and actions. Barack got out of America's #1 law school and could have made the big bucks for himself - instead he dove in to Chicago neighborhoods to work helping communities that were losing jobs overseas. so rev. wright the black panthers and a former weather underground guy are pulling obama's strings and will control our government? "Muslim is not an ethnicity, as people have repeatedly pointed out to you. You do not inherit being Muslim."
Wrong. In fact, given the immense poverty and repression characteristic of the typical Islamic country, one of the few things you DO inherit is being Muslim. Islamic countries simply do not accomodate religious freedom. You are born as a Muslim (indeed, many - such as Indonesia - stamp it on your identity card) and you better plan to stay that way or otherwise you get killed as an apostate."
___________________________________________
Rory, your response is so ridiculous I don't even know where to begin. But, I'll start with this: I am Muslim, my parents were born and raised in a Muslim country (Iran), so my comment and opinion are not baseless.
First, there is no "typical" Muslim country, and there is no "typical" practice of Islam within Muslim countries.(I GUARANTEE YOU THIS!)
Second, just because you live in a Muslim country, or have Muslim relatives does not mean you proscribe to a certain ideology or set of beliefs. Sure, you might be exposed to something that changes the way you see the world, but that happens whenever you're exposed to different cultures or religions. And FYI, that's not a bad or dangerous thing. If you understand where people are coming from, then you can communicate more effectively and reach a broader audience.
I think that's what's so appealing about Barrack Obama. He's had so many different life experiences that it seems he can relate to many different types of people.
I'm really sick of hearing comments about Barrack's connection to the Muslim community. Muslims are not the "boogy monster" looking to get you.
Get off the internet, go meet different people and find out for yourself.
Whether you agree with Barrack Obama's positions, please stop reading more into his so-called "connection" to the Muslim community.
For those of you spreading these lies about Obama all I can say is you must be Republicans. I can not help but notice there is nothing about issues. Well McCain the so called military hero would not even support the new GI Bill. He has personally set back mass transit in this country to the stone age by refusing to support any improvements for the past decade or more. He does not seem well informed about foreign affairs unless he has Leacherman standing behind him so he can whisper the facts in his ear. He broke his own campaign finance law. He supports Bush's policies down the line. He only took up this green environment thing to fool people into thinking he gives a darn about the environment. He is full of gimmicks designed to give people the impression that he has a policy. His involvement with lobbyist not only cost the American people millions from the Keating 5 episode but cost many people their savings as well. I doubt McCain ever shed a tear for any of them. He should have been kicked out of the Senate and sent to jail but his rich friends bought him out of that one. He tried to use his influence illegally on the FCC on behalf of a lobbyist he had an affair with. I guess Cindy got to see how it felt when McCain did to her what he did to his first wife. I believe he has been known to describe his current wife with the name c**t. That must be short for Cindy. His current economical advisor is Phil Gramm. The same Phil Gramm who has had a key role in the current housing disaster and energy crisis. He is the one who put the Enron loophole in some legislation that lead to the bleeding of California to near bankruptcy by driving their electrical cost through the roof. Now it appears he is involved in the same thing only this time it is the whole country with oil prices. If you look behind the curtain at McCain's campaign personnel you will find a lot of dark, sinister people who would flush their own grandmothers down the sewer in the name of making a buck. This country needs a breath of fresh air and McCain with his stinking vermin definitely is not the answer.
It's not 18 months on the campaign trail that is a factor is his weakness, it's that he has been badly advised into doing this.
Without experience and without tangible accomplishments all he can say is he'd like to be president. Big woo.
And this is the wrong election for presenting yourself as nothing else but a lifetime accretion of entitlements.
It just makes it sound like the Presidency is the biggest cherry yet to be picked.
Running someone who has only gotten his hands dirty when the ink smeared on his latest grant next to a war hero who has been in congress since before Obama was even an adult is not going to go over well with people who hav to work for a living.
Then they'll find out that Michelle Obama with Barack Obama's approval took a salary increase to $300,000 from $150,000 in a puff patronage position from a NON-PROFIT HOSPITAL the day her husband went to Washington wherethe could vote favorably on legislation that would benefit her employer.
Montana is a joke.
It's not who Obama is, he's a hologram.
It's not about what he's done, since there is nothing tangible there.
And it's not about what he'll do since he keeps breaking his own campaign promises before he has even been nominated.
............so why bother?
I am not supporting McCain either. Both these candidates are an insult to America.
And if Bill Clinton really was the patriot we'd love him all to be, he'd denounce both of them.
McCain will win since he's more traditionally acceptable to a country that is turned off to both candidates and can expect no leadership that is reassuring or iconic of strength from either of these inadequate candidates.
Both parties need to face facts and come up with two other candidates because these are just a squander of the electoral process.
quote:
I'm not sure what it is the "voters" still want to know.
If serving many years in the house and/or senate is a requirement of aspiring to the presidency, how come? There have been many men (and a few women) who served for a long time and had skeletons in their political closets none of us knew about. They walk away in shame and a sigh of relief, having fooled the electorate for many years and not being punished for it.
Are these voters hoping that with more time they might be able to find skeletons in Senator Obama's political closet? Are they waiting and hoping for him to screw up? If that's the intent, these are voters who are generally looking for a valid reason NOT to vote for him. They don't really want to vote for McCain, but they're just not comfortable voting for Obama. The question then becomes "what is the reason behind not wanting to vote for Obama?" Is it ideological or something else? In my opinion, "we just don't know enough about him" is thinly veiled bigotry. I've encountered more than a few people who simply don't want to see him in the White House because he's biracial and multi cultural, something his supporters see as a strength, both at home and abroad.
The man has written two books about his life. There have been countless articles published about him, his family, and his political experience. He and his family have been under intense (and in many cases, unfair) scrutiny ever since he announced his candidacy. His voting record is available to the public. His every move has been documented for the past two years. He has stated in many venues and forums what his policies are and will be if elected.
What are we waiting for? We've seen that the "experience" granted by holding various elected and appointed political positions doesn't guarantee a good presidency or administration.
The American public claims to want leaders unsullied by the corruption, malaise, and business-as-usual brand of politics in Washington, D.C. Now we have a fresh-faced young man who meets that description and still we have naysayers--"He's too inexperienced."
It's not enough to describe this political season as a tug of war between the right and the left, the liberals and the conservatives, the Republicans and the Democrats. This election, whether people want to admit it or not, has become about race. People are coming to terms with their own very personal, deeply-felt racial biases. They are being "forced" to come to terms with something deep within themselves they thought was resolved by being "comfortable" with well-known African-American public figures, and therefore believing everything is equal now. Many are surprised and disappointed to discover they still harbor feelings of fear, misunderstanding, and dislike, if not hate. The result is rationalization of those beliefs and searching for ways to validate how they're feeling without admitting to themselves, or anybody else, what lies at the root of those feelings and beliefs.
This results in the dissemination of (mis)information we've all heard or read in recent months: "he's a Muslim"; "he has ties to a member of the 1960s radical group Weather Underground"; "he's too 'smooth'"; "he hides behind his public speaking skills" (?); "his wife said 'whitey' in church"; "he'll support the terrorists"; "he's not patriotic because he doesn't wear an American flag lapel pin"; "he was sworn in using the Qu'ran"; he turns his back on the flag"; he won't recite the Pledge of Allegiance"; "we don't know anything about him"; "he's too inexperienced"; and so forth. In my opinion, these are the excuses of people who don't want to vote for him because he's black. They just can't bring themselves to seeing a black man in the oval office.
Our nation is on the brink of disaster with regard to our infrastructure and the economy. Our standing in the world and relationships with other countries are tenuous at best and disastrous at worst. As a nation, we have been greatly weakened by a president and an administration that has no boundaries or sense of duty to anyone or anything other than themselves. We are no longer a strong nation. We are not safer than we were before 9/11. Our constitution has been torn apart by an administration blinded by greed and fear. Our military is depleted. We are vulnerable. We are a mess. And this is all courtesy of the 7.5 years of the Bush administration.
I truly fear for the immediate future of this nation, especially if we're still so collectively simple-minded that we won't vote for a man who has laid out FOR US a wonderful vision and blueprint for our troubled nation, but is black. That would be a very sad commentary on the state of our nation.
So what it is the voters need to know? They need to tell me, an Obama supporter. My guy has been through the ringer so badly at times that I almost wished he'd drop out of the race for the sake of his sanity and well-being. I truly don't know what it is they still need to know.
If you truly, TRULY don't support Senator Obama because you don't like his positions on abortion, gay rights, the economy, etc., then just say so. Don't hide behind some nebulous claim that has no foundation in fact. Be honest with yourself.
I do not know why so many people are saying Obama will be an affirmative action President. Obama campain should release his high school and college academic records to show he was not admitted into Columbia University and Harvard Law School because of affirmative action. If the records show he was well qualified for the admissions, it should put the affirmative action doubt to rest. There are always some people who will doubt any success of African Americans with affirmative action. The best way to defeat that is to show the records.
The two candidates have their share of strengths and weaknesses, but the choice isn't about these men. It is between continuing crippling handouts to the most profitable corporations -- which have not created jobs to justify the handouts -- that have cost 2/3s of our deficit. And continuing the war in Iraq, which has cost us 1/3 our deficit and our standing in the world.
Either man, by default, would have to improve the situation -- it's not possible to drive any faster down the rabbit hole.
But I'll give the Dems another chance, because the Republicans -- in Bush/Cheney's hands -- have proven unable to govern effectively. Their goal has been to weaken America and they have succeeded.
Guess I'd have to hear more repudiation from McCain to seriously consider his candidacy. I'm not hearing that.
What are we waiting for? We've seen that the "experience" granted by holding various elected and appointed political positions doesn't guarantee a good presidency or administration.
The American public claims to want leaders unsullied by the corruption, malaise, and business-as-usual brand of politics in Washington, D.C. Now we have a fresh-faced young man who meets that description and still we have naysayers--"He's too inexperienced."
It's not enough to describe this political season as a tug of war between the right and the left, the liberals and the conservatives, the Republicans and the Democrats. This election, whether people want to admit it or not, has become about race. People are coming to terms with their own very personal, deeply-felt racial biases. They are being "forced" to come to terms with something deep within themselves they thought was resolved by being "comfortable" with well-known African-American public figures, and therefore believing everything is equal now. Many are surprised and disappointed to discover they still harbor feelings of fear, misunderstanding, and dislike, if not hate. The result is rationalization of those beliefs and searching for ways to validate how they're feeling without admitting to themselves, or anybody else, what lies at the root of those feelings and beliefs.
This results in the dissemination of (mis)information we've all heard or read in recent months: "he's a Muslim"; "he has ties to a member of the 1960s radical group Weather Underground"; "he's too 'smooth'"; "he hides behind his public speaking skills" (?); "his wife said 'whitey' in church"; "he'll support the terrorists"; "he's not patriotic because he doesn't wear an American flag lapel pin"; "he was sworn in using the Qu'ran"; he turns his back on the flag"; he won't recite the Pledge of Allegiance"; "we don't know anything about him"; "he's too inexperienced"; and so forth. In my opinion, these are the excuses of people who don't want to vote for him because he's black. They just can't bring themselves to seeing a black man in the oval office.
Our nation is on the brink of disaster with regard to our infrastructure and the economy. Our standing in the world and relationships with other countries are tenuous at best and disastrous at worst. As a nation, we have been greatly weakened by a president and an administration that has no boundaries or sense of duty to anyone or anything other than themselves. We are no longer a strong nation. We are not safer than we were before 9/11. Our constitution has been torn apart by an administration blinded by greed and fear. Our military is depleted. We are vulnerable. We are a mess. And this is all courtesy of the 7.5 years of the Bush administration.
I truly fear for the immediate future of this nation, especially if we're still so collectively simple-minded that we won't vote for a man who has laid out FOR US a wonderful vision and blueprint for our troubled nation, but is black. That would be a very sad commentary on the state of our nation.
So what it is the voters need to know? They need to tell me, an Obama supporter. My guy has been through the ringer so badly at times that I almost wished he'd drop out of the race for the sake of his sanity and well-being. I truly don't know what it is they still need to know.
If you truly, TRULY don't support Senator Obama because you don't like his positions on abortion, gay rights, the economy, etc., then just say so. Don't hide behind some nebulous claim that has no foundation in fact. Be honest with yourself.
So, to everybody who has posted that nonsense here, you have to ask yourself: which are you?
I too agree with those who say Bush stole the 2000 election. But I do not feel it is fair and just to criticize the Republicans and then give a free ride to the Democratic nominee who stole the election with the help of the media and the democrats agenda either. We know the real Obama and the picture is not good. With the shape the country is in it is also not the proper thing to make this an affirmative action election. It is to do the best for this country. The accusations of racist to those who do not support the mighty Obama are doing nothing to unite the democratic party or the nation. It is a turn off. And all the TV messages that Obama is putting out are a waste of money because many of us have turned them off. You can only listen to lies once and repeating them is only reinforcing the fact that they are lies.
Rory, you are mistaken.
Being a Muslim is not hereditary. That is per multiple Islamic scholars.
The New York Times did not establish that Obama was a Muslim. I'm afraid that is misinformation. You can easily verify this on the factcheck section of this web site, or on factcheck.org. Obama was never a Muslim.
The NYT op-ed, suggesting that Obama might be considered an apostate, was immediately renounced by so many Islamic scholars, that the NYT contacted 5 top scholars specifically on the subject. ALL FIVE indicated that Islam is not hereditary, that Obama was not a Muslim b/c of his father, and that Obama would not be considered an apostate.
And, BTW, re my supposed ignorance of the middle east - my husband's mom is an Israeli and he has lived there, so he and I do have some slight familiarity with the topic.
But if you want to speak to others, and lies and rumors are the only proof. That is no proof at all. I usually don't attack others for displaying their ignorance, but I will point out their ignorance. Not one thing she said is true, and the fact that you want others to combat that shows your ignorance.
As I said if you don't want to vote for Obama ... thats fine, if you want to comment on it ... thats fine to. But if you distort, misreprresent, or flat out lie. People, the personal attack on McCain's wife posted by Daddio on the Paddio (July 1, 2008 12:22 PM), does the Obama campaign a disservice. Obama has repeatedly said he wants his campaign to be free of that type of smear campaigning.
He has said he wants to lead a different type of government, one that relies on cooperation between the parties. Smearing his opponent, or worse, his wife, will not foster the collegiality between the majority and minority parties needed for his administration to get things done that need to get done. America can't afford to continue government as usual.
"Muslim is not an ethnicity, as people have repeatedly pointed out to you. You do not inherit being Muslim."
Wrong. In fact, given the immense poverty and repression characteristic of the typical Islamic country, one of the few things you DO inherit is being Muslim. Islamic countries simply do not accomodate religious freedom. You are born as a Muslim (indeed, many - such as Indonesia - stamp it on your identity card) and you better plan to stay that way or otherwise you get killed as an apostate.
Don't get me wrong, frankly I don't care if Obama was once Muslim (or at least I didn't until he took such pains to hide the fact that he once was, as has been established by the NY Times itself). But thinking that people born to Muslim parents and raised in a Muslim country - like Obama - don't forcibly inheret Islam displays a deep, alarming lack of understanding as to how Islamic countries operate and how Islam propagates itself. The NY Times even ran an editorial pondering whether Obama might be killed as an apostate.
Yeah, sure. Half the country is going to nominate a radical black socialist married to a marxist (my, why fights they must have in private!). Very likely. Happens all the time. Why, just look at all those successful radical black socialists out there holding national office. They're a real force to be reckoned with, all right. The vast radical black socialist/marxist party.
That's the kind of lame Republican wishful thinking that's got us into the huge hole we're in now. Substituting insults for thought. Seeing through ideological blinders. Fear of strangers. Posted by: Patriots Against Obama | July 1, 2008 2:53 PM | Report abuse
Enough already, we all know you are black at heart. We don't care.
What we DO care about is the fact that.
1. You sat in an Anti-American bigoted racist church for 20 years, exposing your entire family to it... Ensuring yet another generation of HATE against whitey and their country. THEN try and pass it off as something that WE don't understand... Get real. THEN you decided to throw even your pastor under the bus with your grandmother... Then... Eventually your church itself! Do you have NO MORALES? How about a backbone? God I would be afraid of you sitting down with the worlds tyrants as you are obviously either very blind and stupid or very smart and conniving. Either way you cannot be trusted at this point.
2. You have done nothing since being elected to an office (local or state) other than create and support UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAWS in Chicago along with the rest of your socialist agenda, the same that you supported in DC back in 2007 by stating that you believed that the DC law was proper and constitutional, and created one of the largest drains on the taxpayers in Chicago they have seen for 2 decades... All with no results... Even for the special interest groups he pandered to.
3. For a man who has basically accomplished nothing while in office ("present" votes are not considered voting) other than getting 98% of the black vote during primaries, you seem to have a twisted sense of how America views you... Considering your major backers are still a minority in this country.
4. I began a BO supporter... I even contributed to your campaign... But as I did MY OWN INDEPENDENT research on your past and current endeavors (because of the news diaper you live in), my opinions of you only soured. A simple search of Chicago media (all of them) before you even made it onto the scene is telling enough for most though.
5. You have more in common with Bush Jr. the dunderhead than even McCain. A label you earned all by yourself by consistently towing the far -left agenda as Bush does the far-right. The only difference would be while Bush will kill Americans in an unjust war, you will kill Americans by way of your socialist agenda and death by taxes schemes.
You are a stain on the black community as you will only serve as a warning to future voters. In addition, you have brought America back with you on your trip to the 1970's. I can only wait for the long gas lines to start again as you pick up where Jimmy Carter left off.
Long Live King Obama..... Or whatever else you turn yourself into by the time November rolls around...
Obama did express concerns about people who substitute the flag pin for real patriotism. That's a legitimate, valid concern I've heard from the families of some of our soldiers.
Obama did not grow up in Indonesia until the age of 8 - he lived there for a few years. He was born in the US and spent his first few years in Hawaii, lived for a few years in Indonesia, and spent the rest of his life living in the US. He grew up in the US more than anywhere else.
Neither Obama's father nor his stepfather were strict Muslims, by any report I have seen anywhere.
Muslim is not an ethnicity, as people have repeatedly pointed out to you. You do not inherit being Muslim.
I am not supporting Obama because he is black. I support him because his ideas, on the economy, on the war, on the role of government, are FAR superior to his opponents.
How sad and unfortunate it is that the
part of the qualifications for runnign for the candidacy of president of the United States hinges upon whether God plays a
significant part in one's life and how
vigorously one waves the American Flag,
how one postures themselves for our
national anthem or Pledge of Allegiance.
None of these issues will rehabilitate our United States from the devastation wrought
by an illegally elected adminstration such as that of our so-called president George W. Bush.
How dare any American place standards upon
those of us who would disagree with the manner in which an administraion, particularly the present Bush/Cheney Regime. It's unfotunate, however that one candidate, Senator John McCain chooses to follow the lead of an administration which has done nothing but betray the US Constitution, and subjected us the American Taxpayer to paying for the continued Murder and destruction of two countries, Iraq and Afghnaistan, for reasons which have little or no merit
as fara as American Patriotism or our nation is concerned. At least Senator Barack Obama is attempting to alter the Status Quo, and make some difference.
Unfortunately, it seems that Mr. Obama
is making Faith-Based Initiatives an issue
within his campaign, which points up the reality that he may very well be just another piece of semi ripened fruit which will fall to the earth prematurely, and
make indifference for the real issues plaguing our nation that much more apparent. At least, he hasn't exposed himself as the dangerous man Senator John McCain has become. We can ill-afford four more years of ruinous rule by men of imperialist thought.
While other countries have progressed intellectually you still hold the beliefs and prejudices of your grandparents. But you're so blinded that you just can't see it. What's really scary about that is that you idiots are probably the swing votes that will decide this election and the future course of this country. Wasn't it you and your preference for someone who sounds like you over someone intelligent but a bit boring that got us the current administration ? How ironic that, for all its advances over two centuries, this country's downfall will be selecting the wrong leader at this critical time because of the deep seeded racism that has plagued it from the very beginning.
It's fine if you don't want him to marry your daughter. But vote for Obama, as imperfect as he is, and let him put this country back on the right track. Then you can go back to practicing your racism in relative peace and prosperity.
Democrats have never had any solutions...none for the past 8 yrs. All the Socialist party has done is complain whine, moan and now have found themselves completely inept, incapable in running any sort of effective Congress. The Socialist party, all of them, are traitors, treasonous, political hacks that pander to the loony far left element to hold on to power. They buy votes with high taxes, increase entitlements, redistribute income all in the name of Socialism. Watch them on C Span, they are pitiful, truly pitiful. Like lost deer in the headlights. Can even one reporter get the story right? The General Clark's remarks about McCain were not planned. On "Meet the Press," the general was interupted and asked a question about McCain; and he answered, logically and truthfully. Such sloppy reporting just adds to the hysteria and misinformation surrounding what should be a non-issue.
Why is it when a Democrat has an opinion we accussed of believing in lies.
Fact: Obama did not pledge allegiance to the flag in the video that millions of americans have seen on the internet. Now he is more patriotic than Lincoln himself.
Fact: Obama did not like wearing the flag pin and he justified his opinion the overuse of symbols. Now he wears his flag pin and stands in front more flags than President Bush to make speeches.
Fact: Obama grew up in Indonesia the largest Muslim nation in the world until the age of 8.
Fact: Obama's father and step father were strict Muslims. Obama's sisters and brother are practicing Muslim. Barrack Hussein Obama is a Muslim name. Therefore Americans are open to Obama's ethnic Muslim roots.
Opinion: There is nothing wrong with acknowledging Obama's ethnic background. We are not educated enough to understand the implications of Obama's formatives years in the largest Muslim nation in the world. He sees the world differently than someone growing up in Montana.
Americans are still wondering after 20 months of campaigning who Obama really is. If he keeps flip flopping on issues, identity, values, policies and even the simplest act of wearing a flag pin, then Americans wil continue to have growing mistrust for Obama.
Obama can talk the talk but can he walk the walk? He wants us to vote for him and see. Well many Americans already did that with Bush and they do not a repeat disappointment.
Obama supporters just want a black man in office. That doesn't help America at the gas pump or put food onthe table. America is not dealing with a civil rights issue this election but rather a serious economic issue.
Obama just looks like he wants to be the first black president. We just want to be able to take care of our kids.
Obama's risen through tactics, by climbing over people's backs.
He has not yet shown a sign of courage. His ambition is bigger than he could accomplish. If he wants to be our President, he must tell us what he can really do. He has to show us his true color.
Obama's problems do not stem just from women and Hillary supporters. Some traditional liberals find his lack of experience, willingness to change positions, and receptivity to negotiation in places like Iran downright problematic. Coupled with the need to prevent the media from selecting nominees, cosiderations about his shortcomings literally lead many of these traditional liberals to entertain supporting McCain. Whoever noted that Kerry was seventeen points above Bush at this point has it right. The Democrats better come to their senses before the convention, or November will deal a traumatic blow to progressive politics and civil rights.
Democrats are so sick of Obama and his speeches. His voice now rings hollow. TV loves to run them but voters are tired of his lies and political double talk. Obama has a billion dollar campaign to bankrolled by banks, hedge funds, housing and energy industries.
Obama is hated among many Americans. He only shows an approval rating of 47% and McCain 42%. That is not very impressive.
Kerry had a 17% lead over Bush this time in 2004.
Obama has reneged on all of these policies FISA, FEC, nuclear technology, Iraq war funding, Rev. Wright, wearing the flag pin, soluting the flag, having Muslim girls with the Hijab in his audience. He says he is running for president based on his sense of love for his country then he is running as the first Black president of this country. He was part of the Muslim community then he wasn't part of the Muslim community. Obama was at Rev. Wright's Trinity church and didn't hear any racist remarks then he left the church days later for the racist remarks the Rev. said.
Obama says he does not get lobby money but gets money "from folks like you". Now records show that he gets more money from Banks, Hegde funds, Real Estate and energy industries.
Obama claims he is the new politics but he plays the same old games.
Obama campaigns against Bush but we know that Bush is gone anyway.
Obama is on the Afghanistan intelligence subcomitte but never attends.
Obama reminds us more of Bush than McCain does.
He's got that racist [pastor] who practically raised him, and then there's the Muslim thing. He's just not presidential material, if you ask me."...
Does he trust a local newspaper article that details Obama's Christian faith? Or his friend Leroy Pollard, a devoted family man so convinced Obama is a radical Muslim that he threatened to stop talking to his daughter when he heard she might vote for him? ...
I am not sure this Nation could survive four years of his presidency! I think we will find out if we can survive four years of Obama. In both cases, I think both will accelerate & hasten the demise and eventual down fail of this great Nation. I say this because both are supporting Amnesty for the Millions of Uneducated Aliens that are pouring across our open Borders. History has shown that Great Nation perish from internal rot and not from outside forces. All nations immigration policies are by design and intent suppose to promote and enhance the welfare of the Nations citizens and the future of the Nation.
Clearly giving Amnesty to 20 to 30 million of uneducated peons and criminals rejects from third world countries alone with the chain immigration of their relatives and their relatives that owe their loyally to their home countries and refuse to assimilate, is not in the best interest of the Nation or its Citizens! Citizens that have immigrated here legally, obeyed the laws, paid their taxes and fought our wars and built the greatest nation on earth.
While both would have us believe it is their great compassion is the reason they support Amnesty, it is in fact pandering for votes irregardless of the great harm and irreparable damage they will to do this Nation. Amnesty on this scale of uneducated, educating hating, fast breeding, welfare loving, criminally inclined aliens will eventually turn this Nation into the same type of society the invaders have created and built and are now fleeing from in their own countries!
Honorable man VS car salesman
PLEASE WAKE UP AMERICANS....A vote for the car salesman is a vote for REZKO, Wright, Ayers, and Farahkhan...He is an empty suit; he can say anything to get elected. This rookie is a big PHONY. Obama is a joke.....
Remember Muslim's sons are for life. Blood is sticker than water. He can run but he can not hide.
Please don't be fooled by a car salesman. ....As a patriotic American; I don't care if you are a Democrat or Republican, we deserve an honorable man like Sen. McCain.
"That is one giant assumption you make. Did it ever occur that perhaps other people are just as well informed as you are and are making their decisions in the same way you."
Such a though is rapidly erased by listening to their "information," which is nothing more than a passel of repackaged lies and distortions peddled by disreputable sources and repudiated by every serious politician and media outlet. It's the stuff you see in anonymous blogs and e-mails: no reputable entity will touch this garbage.
So you may be "informed" in a sense, but you can't call it "well informed."
IRON RULE OF POLITICS:
No president nor his party's nominee has ever been elected if an economic downturn BEGINS and continues during his term. PERIOD!
With jobs, housing and 401Ks nosediving all else is irrelevant.
Imagine the Dow suffering the worst June since Herbert Hoover. WOWEEEE!
To LG,
There you liberals go again. If you question Obama for anything you are automatically labeled a racist. And yes I question his patriotism. Us dumb hicks do want to know who he really is and why he didn't want to wear a flag lapel.
Daddio:
I've also heard a rumor that one of the women McCain had an affair with in the '70s became pregnant and was pressured by him to have an abortion. Some of his wealthy supporters have been paying her to keep quiet so that the Christian right won't be further alienated from McCain.
This idea of Obama having to tell those who would question his patriotism about who he is centered around the "politics of fear" it is biased and borderline racism. I cannot remember when anyone running for president had to prove that they were truly an American. This is hogwash. Grow up and stop playing this game of questioning who this man is in order to give yourself an excuse for not voting for him.. IT'S STUPID and truly UNAMERICAN
I have read his book and what he portrays in his speeches is not what he wrote in his 1st book. He should stop giving speeches!
Getting tired of Obama's speech..
show us your resume and your accomplishments Mr. Obama!
we want you to debate Mr. McCain and we want you to do more one on one interviews.
I want him to name every country in the continent and what their capitals are??
I want to know if he really know foreign leaders' names , remember that journalist similar question from Bush back in 2000??
PLEASE NO MORE SPEECHES...WE GOT IT, THAT YOU ARE A VERY GOOD SPEAKER, NOW LETS FOCUS ON YOUR OTHER TALENTS..
WHICH ARE??? well, I know you can recite Quara prayer with "first class" Arabic accent..
Remember this article from New York Times, from last year (3/16/07)?
"In a free-ranging interview with the New York Times, Obama described the Muslim call to prayer as 'one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.' The Times's Nicholos Kristof wrote, Obama recited, 'with a first-class [Arabic] accent,' the opening lines of the Muslim call to prayer. "
Patriotism. It's time to examine Bush's patriotism - seems the word itself has "riot" in it. Patriotism is not putting your country into a major recession and a useless war because of a family vendetta against Saddam Hussein.
So true. Obama has fresh ideas, a desire to make things better, and is a moral and ethical man. McCain wants to keep the status quo for big business and bigger oil and the very wealthy "ruling class".
Yes, Senator Obama has a long road in introducing himself. Especially when he faces a news media which will have its own pre- written script to get through. The media as they did in 2000 and 2004, has a pre set script that they will try to use to control the narrative of this election. The American people must not allow them to.
the antipathy towards Barack Obama is chilling..because it is based on misinformation, rumor, racism, and fear. If one doesn't like Sen. Obama that's fine--but why can't it be based on issues, voting record, or even "personality"--in other words, some intelligent reasoning. Sen. Mc Cain is no choir boy--Sen. Obama has led a much more traditionally "moral" life in terms of family, faith, and work ethic.
And McBush has a moral compass? Lemme guess, it's his male member according to confirmed history.
Obama keeps telling this "big lie" hoping that it gains traction outside of his delusional, fanatic, apologist base. The real Barack Obama is desperately trying to market himself as an agent of change and civility, while letting his campaign and surrogates play the fear and racism card.
Now, the real Obama sends envoys to Canada to ensure them that his rhetoric is political posturing. The real Obama stands by Rev. Wright until he finds out that Blacks will go along with throwing the minister under the bus; then, he repudiates Wright. The real Obama condemns bills that would allow Telecoms off free, until he decides that it would detract from his campaign, then he signs on to a "compromise". The real Obama surrounds himself with flag paraphenalia when he finds that Joe American is actually proud of what the American flag stands for.
Leslie, what is the cause that you support? Barack has a long history of standing for anything, until it is no longer politically advantageous. Look down, Rev. Wright is like Pennywise the Clown in the storm sewer - "there's plenty of room down here". How do you know that you and your cause are not next. Barack has no moral compass to guide him.
OBAMA SUPPORTERS please read and pass on to everyone you know. We have to get the word out!
From the Liberty Tree, written by Jake Morphonios
John McCain and Adultery [redacted]
Vicki Iseman wasn't the first [for McCain], and she won't be the last. Shocking details of John McCain's history. How could the Republican party choose an adulterer to represent them after the way they ripped Bill Clinton apart for the same thing?
In 1965 John McCain, a member of the US Navy, married an attractive model named Carol Shepp. In 1967 McCain was sent to Vietnam. It didn't take long before McCain was shot down and taken prisoner. Carol waited faithfully for McCain during his imprisonment. In 1969, Carol was in a terrible car crash. She was thrown through the windshield and suffered serious injuries. But Carol would not allow her POW husband to be notified of what had happened to her because she didn't want him to feel any additional stress. She stood by her man, alone, for the 5 years he was in prison.
McCain was released in 1973 and returned home to find that Carol's accident had "left her 4 inches shorter and on crutches, and she had gained a good deal of weight." [4] McCain no longer had a trophy wife he could feel proud of.
By the late 70's McCain had engaged in adulterous behaviors, as chronicled in the book "The Nightingale's Song" by Robert Timberg. Timberg wrote:
"Off duty, usually on routine cross-country flights to Yuma and El Centro, John started carousing and running around with women. To make matters worse, some of the women with whom he was linked by rumor were subordinates. At the time the rumors were so widespread that, true or not, they became part of McCain's persona, impossible not to take note of."
In 1979 John McCain met Cindy Lou Hensley at a military reception in Hawaii. [1] Cindy was a millionaire and very attractive. McCain was eighteen years older than the wealthy Hensley, but that didn't stop him from developing an adulterous relationship with her. [2]
McCain says of their first meeting, "She was lovely, intelligent and charming, 18 years my junior but poised and confident. I monopolized her attention the entire time, taking care to prevent anyone else from intruding on our conversation. When it came time to leave the party, I persuaded her to join me for drinks at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. By the evening's end, I was in love."
Knowing that Cindy's father had extensive business and political contacts [3], McCain decided to abandon his first wife and marry Cindy. McCain divorced Carol in April 1980 and immediately married Cindy the next month, May 17th. With the Hensley fortune and connections, McCain ran for Congress in 1982. He craved power and has been on a course to secure ultimate control ever since.
A man that cannot be faithful to a loving, self-sacrificing wife cannot be trusted to be faithful to the American people. Bill Clinton taught us that. This week the New York Times reported that during his previous Presidential run in 2000, McCain may have had an inappropriate relationship with the young and lovely lobbyist, Vicki Iseman. The public, not knowing McCain's history of adultery, responded to the NY Times as if they had to be making the story up. NOW what do you think?
Images are all over the internet of Cindy McCain standing at her husband's side as he denied reports of committing adultery with yet another young influential woman.
I wonder what Cindy was thinking.
