Reactions to Arkansas Democratic Party Shooting

Updated 7:01 p.m.
By Garance Franke-Ruta
The Associated Press reports "A man barged into the Arkansas Democratic headquarters and opened fire Wednesday, fatally shooting the state party chairman before speeding off in his pickup. Police later shot and killed the suspect after a 30-mile chase."

Sen. Hillary and former president Bill Clinton quickly issued a joint statement on the shooting in their former home state, initially sending their prayers for critically injured Democratic chair Bill Gwatney's recovery.

It was a statement they had to update later in the afternoon.

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away," they said. "His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presumptive presidential nominee, also issued two statement. "Michelle and I are heartbroken to hear about the tragic loss of Chairman Bill Gwatney," he said in the second one. "We're praying for his family and friends and all who worked with him and loved him."

Added Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, DNC vice chair Lottie Shackelford, and Michigan Democratic Party chair Mark Brewer, in a statement late this afternoon: "On behalf of the Democratic Party our thoughts and prayers are with Chairman Gwatney's family and friends and the extended Democratic family in Arkansas. With this senseless act of violence we have lost a good friend and honorable man. Bill will be remembered for his hard work and dedication to the Party, and he will be sorely missed."

Del, in what meaningful way is a McCain admin not Bush’s 3rd term. Fill us all in.

> I'm not claiming that -- (re)read my post and the post I was responding to -- I pointed out that Republicans were claiming that. CIA never officially confirmed her status, one way or the other. You are aware that no criminal charges were ever filed for revealing her identity and her civil suit was dismissed, right?
And, JakeD, are YOU aware that that has nothing to do with the case’s being groundless or any such thing. One, the face that a case would be dismissed by any court under the jurisdiction of THIS administration’s Dept. of Justice is hardly surprising—just ask Mulkasey about Monica Goodling and her doings (“Why do you want to serve George W. Bush?” etc.). Two, the case is still a candidate for appeals to the Supreme Court. It’s being worked on.

Obama is a crook! And so cunning, he actually has a lot of people fooled into thinking he's so different than a typical dirtbag politician.

What has Obama done that is so great? His past experience is nill, his friends are criminals and bigots, he and his wife are painting our nation as unworthy without them being royalty, and Obama flip-flops on a dime.

Obama is high on hope, but low in proven solutions.

"...I'm reminded that the actions of those in power have enormous consequences -- a price that they themselves almost never have to pay."
- Barack Obama; The Audacity of Hope; p. 48

Consider this telling fragment from the Obama timeline, offered by David Freddoso in his new book, The Case Against Barack Obama:

July 31, 1995 - Tony Rezko makes his first political donation to Obama.

July 1995 - Obama seeks (and later receives) endorsement of radical New Party.

January 2, 1996 - Obama begins process of throwing all of his opponents off the ballot.

March 19, 1996 - Obama wins Democratic state Senate primary, unopposed.

January 14, 1997 - Tony Rezko, while claiming he cannot afford to turn on the heat in one of his slums, writes a $1,000 check to Barack Obama's campaign.

February, 1997 - Obama co-sponsors a bill that creates affordable local housing funds in order to subsidize private developers.

August 23, 2001 - Bill co-sponsored by Obama, giving special tax credits to donors to private developers of "affordable housing."

May 21, 2003 - Obama votes for the Affordable Housing Planning and Appeal Act, creating demand for at least 7,000 new "affordable housing" units and letting private developers circumvent local ordinances.

August 14, 2003 - Stuart Levine and Tony Rezko steer $50 million in teachers' retirement money to an investment firm and receive a $250,000 kickback from the "finder."

March 4, 2004 -Obama co-sponsors bill to move forward deadlines of developer-friendly housing bill.

June 15, 2005 - Obama and Tony Rezko close on adjacent properties in Hyde Park.

May 26, 2005 - Chicago Tribune profiles Tony Rezko, noting that he has been subpoenaed in a criminal investigation.

January 2006 - Obama purchases part of neighbor Tony Rezko's lot.

In his first position of any government power, Barack Obama, perfectly evidenced his own pronouncement:

"...the actions of those in power have enormous consequences -- a price that they themselves almost never have to pay."

Syrian-born Tony Rezko is now in prison, after having been convicted by a federal jury on 16 of 24 counts of corruption charges.

Cheating the taxpayers is serious business.

But while Tony Rezko languishes in a prison cell, Barack Obama seeks the Presidency.

And what of those lovely "affordable housing" units that Tony Rezko and his Illinois state Senate handmaiden, Barack Obama, paid for with taxpayer money?

They are rat-infested slums, which have been largely condemned by local authorities as uninhabitable by human beings.

The poor citizens of Illinois are left paying the consequences of Obama's power. He's off in Hawaii resting up for his Denver coronation.

NOBAMA

Vote against Obama!

The political machine continues to do damage control with this story. No blotches wanted on the democrats squeaky clean campaign. Authorities and press have most killers bios and tons of interviews across headlines usually a day within most killings. Three days later police are lollygagging around and the press couldn't care less. The formitable Chicago Times has this deep investigate piece to run (pasted here in its entirety).

Police seek motive for political shooting
August 15, 2008
SEARCY — The suspect in the killing of Arkansas' Democratic Party chairman wrote his victim's name on a Post-It note and had sets of car keys from the victim's car dealership, but links between the men and a motive remain a mystery.

Police said Timothy Dale Johnson, 50, owned at least 16 guns, had antidepressant pills and made out a will before shooting Bill Gwatney on Wednesday in Little Rock. He had driven more than 30 miles to the party's headquarters after losing his job.

That's it?

Sounds very conspiracy-oriented, I know. But the disgruntled fired-worker story is all anyone is going to make of this story before its sinks from sight. On stains on this campaign.

I have witnessed some barbaric personalities since moving to Arkansas...God rules. What goes around comes around, this murder reeks of sabotage...I feel for the family.Ive had personal attacks against me for idiotic reasons also, Is it the mentality
...

Posted by: Susan | August 14, 2008 9:31 PM

The motive is obvious by the scrawling on the wall of "the hallways are too ... narrow".

I don't think more needs to be said, and if you don't get it then your too dumb or just don't know anything about politics in general.

I congradulate this man for taking a stand for what he believes is right, too few people like that these days...

Definitions of liberal on the Web:

* broad: showing or characterized by broad-mindedness; "a broad political stance"; "generous and broad sympathies"; "a liberal newspaper"; "tolerant ...
* having political or social views favoring reform and progress
* tolerant of change; not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or tradition

Why is it that most of the hateful, intolerant and narrow-minded posts seem to be coming from those who proclaim to be liberals?

Rothschild > CFR > Reuters > AP >Washington Post/ABC/MSNBC/Fox/CNN/NyTimes/LAtimes/Everymajormediasource - got it? research, think critically, question perceived reality, love yourself and others.

They want us to hate and kill each other, the powers that be are laughing gleefully at this incident and the further hatred it inspires on both sides of the political aisle as witnessed in most of the comments beneath me. We can make the world better but it is not by playing cynical blame games against each other, it's by asking good focused questions based outside the realm of ideology and bias.

RIP Mr. Gwatney, I hope the person who committed this terrible crime can see the error in there ways one day. God hates the sin, not the sinner.

JakeD, are you claiming that Valerie Plame was not covert at the time Novak disclosed her status? See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerie_plame in the "Plamegate" section. Plenty of hyperlinked documents to investigations and official documents (not just what you'd call partisan news) confirming her covert status. Take that, strawman.

You nailed it, Ann L. Right on target. And if and when there's blood shed at the Democratic Convention in Denver, Limbaugh called for that too.

Oh jeez. No, they're all for McCain because they're worried about tax on their capital gains and making sure they don't pay your "death tax" on estates over $1 million. Yes, it's a good bet more of EVERYBODY would vote for Obama than McCain with something like 80% of the nation believing the cuontry's on the wrong track. Why on earth would we stick with a 3rd Bush administration???

> You don't hate babies... you need someone to tax in the future.

And you, Rusty, need to learn that taxes pay for the roads you drive your SUV up and down all day and plenty of other services that you wouldn't otherwise pay for but which society undeniably needs. Oliver Wendell Holmes put it best: "Taxes are the price we pay for civilization." But you'll just stick with your simpleminded kneejerk I don't want to pay any taxes for anything attitude. I could never live with such a selfish attitude but I guess you can.

What do you bet this guy is a Republican? It's amazing how they are so in denial...they cater to sociopaths, spew hate-speech against Dems all day (Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Reilly, Savage, Hannity have all talked about killing liberals), and then they act surprised when one of their lunatic lemmings goes off and murders a Democrat. Sure, there is the occasional exception, but face it people - the sick f*cks are 99% on the right-wing side of things almost every single time.

No Republican I know ever claimed that Valerie Plame didn't work at CIA -- that was the whole point of her getting her husband on that trip -- Republicans were saying that she was no longer "covert" and the U.S. was not actively keeping her identity secret. Nice strawman argument, though.

Aspergirl -

You hit it right on the nose, that was a good explanation of the sociopathic tendencies of group think. I don't go on Kos so I don't really know what to think of their conversations, but I wouldn't be surprised how easy it is for a crowd to become a mob there. There's a lot of angry people I find in most group blogs, and it always seems like hate speech becomes more acceptable if everyone's doing it - which of course brings out the worst in everyone.

This pick-up truck guy, who knows if he even kept up with the news... seems like just a fired Target employee, crazy and out-of-work. He could be thinking the democrats are giving his Target job to Mexicans, could be he expected to get hired as a staffer and suddenly blamed all his problems on the last person to refuse him. He could even be a past supporter like that guy last year that held Hillary Clinton staffers hostage. He couldn't afford health care and was trying to get attention.

I don't understand the logic that the Daily Kos is the proximate cause of a leader in the Democratic Party being shot? If you had said Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Hannity and Combs, or such you might have credibility. These right wing hate channels have now been responsible for encouraging two killings. The one in Nashville was another nut case who believed his problems were caused by liberal policies. Guess where that kind of thinking originates?

Recently, the left-wing liberal blog, DailyKos, had a poll up on its website. Recently, Robert Novak, a conservative journalist, had been diagnosed with a brain cancer with a poor prognosis and he resigned from his writing job. The poll asked which conservative journalist should get brain cancer next. It listed conservative reporters including Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and also had a "Smite them all" choice.

Now it seems, to a pseudo-sophisticate that this kind of trashy-smart snark is just that -- a snark -- but I think that the pretense that sociopathic verbal behavior among political media and new media is NOT sociopathic reflects a lack of self-awareness.

I was on the DailyKos website recently and they really do hate, and they really do hate in a personal way with intent to harm someone they perceive as belonging to "the other" group. If you post a contrarian view on their site, it takes very little to attract attention, accusations of being a "Repug" "troll" and then mobbing behavior takes over, complete with people posting death imagery, trying to gang-attack the perceived "Repug's" psychologically and the dialog shows how gleeful and pleasurable the sociopathic bullying is. A quick search of their site reveals that these attacks take place almost constantly on DailyKos, so that at any give time one can jump in on a verbal mobbing of a perceived "Repug" -- who is, really, anyone who strays to the right of that day's talking points.

For anyone from a good school, a good background or who isn't indoctrinated into that behavior and calloused or used to it, the behavior seems bizarre and freakishly hateful. But the delightful part of engaging in groupthink sociopathy, like racism or virulent political partisanship, is that it leaves those people who engage in it unaware of how out of the mainstream and inappropriate their behavioral drift as a group into their sociopathic norms may have become. The notion that their behavior is acceptable because they frame it in a traditionally rhetorical subject -- political discussion or commentary -- only works if you are indoctrinated and calloused to it AND if you are cognitively capable of performing the handstands that allows the sociopathically behaving political group to rationalize their behavior.

A mentally ill person, who has sociopathic or personality disorder, might not be able to frame or reframe the vile rhetoric of sociopathic political rhetoric and groupthink verbal behavior.

It doesn't advance the debate, or do anything to further the political environment, for such political new media to be spewing sociopathic partisan memes into the open. It's not a matter of free speech, to contain sociopathic political verbal behavior, it's a matter of the serious harm to people who cannot perform the mental handstands to file away sociopathic political verbal memes and behaviors into the "B.S." file as an affectation.

The media, including mainstream media, only encourages and empowers those political blogs and groups who have become generators of sociopathic political verbal behaviors and sociopathic hate speech memes.

Sites like the DailyKos, that not only generate and spew out sociopathic verbal attacks and portrayals of conservatives but that also train it's members to mob and abuse perceived "Repugs", should be recognized as having strayed over the line and as doing ill and not good.

As the shooting of this politician demonstrates, the poison that sociopathic political hate speech spread through our society by those minority who engage in it, affects us all directly or indirectly.

DailyKos and other sites that support and encourage sociopathic verbal behavior and spread hate speech memes about persons and groups, should stop getting a free pass for what they are doing. Sometimes, just being jerked back by a chain they've run out too far, is enough to choke off the poison flow and orient a group to a more constructive behavioral political speech norm.

Posted by: AsperGirl | August 14, 2008 6:58 AM

It's a good start. One at a time will take a long time though.

Posted by: Gatlin | August 14, 2008 6:57 AM

This makes me so bitter and angry. Hillary needs to grab the nomination -- she is entitled to be president, by the way -- and put a stop to all of this.

With Hillary as a strong leader, criminals will instead play midnight basketball.

The rest of the Democratic Party needs to understand what Hillary does: that it is the far-left members of the party -- angry, bitter leftists like me who read firedoglake and are secure in our gender identity -- who will decide this fall's election.

You GO, Hillary!

Posted by: twin_peaks_nikki | August 14, 2008 6:55 AM

This is a note about election year poisonous political rhetoric having sociopathic traits and being too personalized as portraying individuals as "evil" and deserving to die. Maybe some journalist will decide to write a piece on the subject that will help bring awareness to the effects on mentally ill people of gratuitously sociopathic, personalized political rhetoric.

First of all, this is a sad personal tragedy. My condolences go out to the man and those who worked with him in Democratic party politics.

The intensity of the partisanship this year has risen to uncomfortable levels and those who are troubled in sociopathic ways will be more disturbed by a poisonous environment. We should remember that in the self-serving rhetoric party extremists dish up trying to wedge up the emotional connections of their bases.

The issue of the sociopathic political rhetoric that is deemed acceptable by people who should know better, but that can affect people who are mentally ill is worth mentioning. It should be noted that media outlets and groups who produce and promote sociopathic political rhetoric and verbal abuse against the opposition don't get disapproved of or get bad reputations. indeed, this seems to be a particular class of behavior that media, particularly new media including online blogs and videographers, has a free pass on.

SOMEONE is doing their best to make sure people aren't scared by a potential tragedy like this happening to Obama. I think we'll have to wait until coworkers and friends speak up about the shooters feelings towards the democratic party and the candidate. But I find it very interesting that few news stories have even speculated on a connection between the shooter and his feelings towards the election and Mr. Obama. I work for a newspaper. I was very curious that the Associated Press choose to drop Mr.Obama's comment from their wire copy entirely. The Associated Press releases various rewrites of stories throughout the day. The first release quoted Mr. Obama's feelings about the tragedy. But the next few rewrites that crossed the wires mysteriously dropped his quote entirely. They left in the Clintons reaction that originally appeared alongside Mr. Obamas, but the Associated Press deleted Mr. Obamas reaction in the next four rewrites. Something tells me that someone said: "Leave Mr. Obama out of the story". I don't know if it was someone at AP or someone with clout in his campaign. But I find it very coincidental and suspicious -- considering that the worst possible thing that could happen would be for voters to associate this shooting with possible trouble ahead for Obama -- and then his connection to the story is then almost completely erased from the most widely disseminated coverage of the tragedy as issued by by the Associated Press.

BB, remember to take those meds. We can't do it for you. Write it down if it helps. Here's how to do it: TAKE MEDS. Post it someplace where you'll see it often.

G'night. Try not to look under the bed too many times, especially around 4 AM. And remember, help is just a clinic visit away. Go there tomorrow. Do it for yourself. They'll understand. They won't hurt you. They'll help you.

Posted by: Not BB | August 14, 2008 1:54 AM

Here's some good advice, BB. If you're driving and see the pretty lights behind you, stop! Permit the demon to approach your window. When he asks for proof of your existence, smile the biggest, widest smile you can. And while you're still smiling, begin to reach under your seat but never take your eyes off the demon's eyes. Don't respond to anything the demon says except to repeat loudly (while still beaming your biggest smile), "The proof of my existence is here! The proof of my existence is here! You'll see it soon!" If the demon begins to shout, then shout back AS LOUDLY AS YOU CAN: "THE PROOF OF MY EXISTENCE IS HERE!!" Remember to keep searching with your hand under your seat.

If you do this exactly as I've written, the Natural Order of the Universe will protect you.

Posted by: BB | August 14, 2008 1:40 AM

BB, I saw that another blogger advised you to seek psychiatric help. I agree. Do it for your own sake. Forget about everyone else. Just go take care of yourself for now. It's what you need to do. There are clinics who will treat you for free. Go to one. You'll probably be diagnosed as schizophrenic but don't worry. There are drugs today that can help you. Remember to take the drugs that are prescribed for you. In time, you'll be able to function again. Best of luck to you.

Every conservative's brain is just a running list of every imagined "enemy" who has every done them wrong. If you've ever been so much as mildly impolite to a conservative you should fear for your life. They're bats**t crazy.

Wow, these are some of the most offensive, small-minded and outright ignorant posts I've read in a long time. I wish sites would just turn off the comments section on articles like this. It gives the fringe idiots of our society too big of a platform from which to launch their offensive attacks on intelligence.

HOOSIER - Since I'm a native Hoosier, don't use the screen name Hoosier. It makes all of us native Hoosiers look bad. You may or may not be an intelilgent person (I'd lean towards the latter) but your post was without any doubt completely idiotic. So if you want to use a screen name that describes you, perhaps you should consider using IDIOT.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A man recently fired from a Target store barged into the Arkansas Democratic headquarters Wednesday and fatally shot the state party chairman before speeding off in his pickup. Police later shot and killed the suspect after a 30-mile chase.

Police identified the suspect as 50-year-old Timothy Dale Johnson of Searcy, a town about 50 miles northeast of Little Rock. They said that moments after the shooting, Johnson pointed a handgun at a worker at the nearby Arkansas Baptist headquarters. An official there said he told the worker, "I lost my job."

Ridigana, your statement that "obviously Republicans couldn't care less" in contrast with "top democrats" speaking out is simple to understand for anyone who isn't a liberal moron or mentally ill (sorry, folks, for repeating myself just now).

Republicans speak out constantly about the murder of millions of babies each and every year under morally misguided liberal policies. Thus, the murder itself of one who not only supported those murders, but who actually chose to be responsible in leading and organizing others who also do, is not someone to be mourned for long, except to note it in sadness as most sensible human beings would, briefly, and then to move on to more important concerns.

Please try to get your priorities straight next time before you embarrass yourself in public again.

Remember that several US presidents, both democrat and republican were targets of assassins. When a nut wants to kill somebody, he usually doesn't bother with the particular political credentials of the victim. And if a gun isn't handy, he might try a knife. This appears to be a personal vendetta so let's just give whatever support we can to Mr. Gwatney's family and try to forget politics for the moment.

So, is the whole state gonna go on Martial Law lockdown now? Seems it's the thing to do in Arkansas. Look for it to come to a neighborhood near you. Martial Law, it's the John Warner Defense Authorization Act and the Patriot Act in action.

Look for a 2nd Amendment lock down and for this to be a key event in suppressing your rights even more.

The only major historic violation of Constitutional rights and human rights in recent history has been done by Republicans. Yet you fantasize that Democrats will use Bush/cheneys/rubber stamp republican patriot act to take away your guns. Where were you when your rights were actually stolen.
Deal with facts cletus, Democrats are offering condolences and prayers to the family. They have not mentioned or acted to take away your guns and never will.
BTW Brady was Reagans buddy. Gun restrictions sometimes make sense to reasonable people of all parties.

John5750 listed some of the worst things about Barack Obama, including "his gay tendencies". I had heard about his liberal use of thugs and all about his crooked friends but the idea that he was involved in the murder of homosexuals in Chicago came as a surprise. John5750, are you really sure Obama has gay tendencies? It sounds like you must have first hand knowledge. Come out of the closet John5750 and tell all you know about his secret gay life. I'm sure his wife and kids are anxious to find out, although the rest of us may be just a tad skeptical.

I'm shocked and saddened by the death and bewildered by the casual manner of the killing, the casual manner of the police killing the suspect and the no-big-deal, business as usual reporting. What truly frightens me, however, is the cruelty, the pure venom, oozing from some of the reactions on these pages.

Lord have mercy.

Obamas people sent a gunman to kill Chairman Bill Gwatney a Hillary Clinton superdelegate of Arkansas before the Convention in Denver.

Posted by: Hoosier | August 14, 2008 12:09 AM

Good thing the cops shot the SOB or he would have been after a lot of other Democrats if Obama gets in. Apparently he stated to a Babtist minister at the site right after shooting Gwatney "I just lost my job". If Obama gets in the only available jobs will be for the government welfare department.

There is a lot of venom directed at "liberals" in this very conservative state.

Bill Gwatney was the chair of the Democratic Party.

he shooter was a former employee of the Democratic party: Big Lie.

The shooter was a former employee of Gwatney's auto business: Big Lie.

Draw your own conclusions.

However, given the huge amount of sympathy over this, it's very possible Obama might take Arkansas this fall.

It is really sad that we live in a state of freedom of speech and yet we speak such hatred. It amazes me that people are so feeble minded that they would take such a tragic situation and make it political. You don't have to be religious to know that - we are all going to die - we are all going to know someone who dies - we are all going to love someone who dies and as such your name will one day be listed in someones obituary. You silly people who think that this is something funny or something to be discussed without any emotions will one day suffer the most. This one day could very well be your loved-one and your silly behind will be have to read the stupid comments made about them - your pain and suffering will be great - this will come true for you for we all die. It stands to reason that this man had a personal vendetta - he had lost his job and just maybe - in these hard times in the alleged greatest country in the world - he needed to punish someone he felt was responsible. Just maybe he worked at one of Gwatney's dealerships - Just maybe this had nothing to do with politics - as he didn't kill everyone in sight. Regardless, it is a senseless death - but just maybe tomorrow it can be you, someone you know or someone you love and I pray that the comments you've made - don't bring your chickens home to roost.

I find it strange that a Democratic Official is killed and then his killer happens to be killed as well. So much for finding out the motive because it won't matter anyway...or will it.

Trying not to be a conspiracy believer gets harder and harder these days. Events like this seem strange. You begin to wonder if someone knew a little too much and that knowledge cost them their life. One then begins to wonder if the killer had to know a little too much about those that requested the act and thus had to be silenced. Then you start to wonder why those that vow to uphold the law would be the ones to silence the killer that knew too much about the person that knew too much and had to be silenced.

For the benefit of those of us who don't believe in such silly conspiracies, I beg the authorities in Arkansas to fully investigate this horrible act and to expose the motive behind these executions.

Posted by: texasdem | August 13, 2008 11:45 PM

Is this more Obama dirty work?

Obama goons are constantly hacking and shutting down anti-Obama websites.

Obama’s thugs went into the caucuses to steal delegates through the use of theft, threats, force, and every kind of fraud imaginable.

Obama may be involved in the murder of the Chicago gays who knew about his gay tendencies.

Obama’s friends - Rezko, the Iraqi crooks, Chicago crooks, the terrorist bomber of American sites, etc. are not the finest people.

He will do anything to keep Hillary from winning including keeping her off the Denver ballot and violating Democratic rules of a century.

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit to find out Obama is behind this too.

As some posters have indicated we have no idea as yet what the motive was. Maybe it was money, maybe it was sexual, maybe it was personal. Why assume it was political?

ANOTHER horrible murder because it is too damned easy to get guns and shoot people. It IS as simple as that! Many more people are killed by guns than are saved by having them..including policemen, which is why sheriffs and chiefs of police oppose laxity of gun laws. The "rural" gunowners make it impossible for city-dwellers to get rid of them, because people will just drive down to the South or the West and get them. HOrrible.

This disgusting comment perfectly sums up the attitude of the Republican Party. For those of you neocons crying for unity, get real. The Republicans live for the exact opposite. They shun outsiders and bomb other countries while trying to police the world. I live in the North in MD, where there are (thankfully) no conservatives, but most conservatives in the closest Southern state (Virginia) have the exact same attitude as this "JJ" a**hole. While their Gov. Kaine tries to work with the heavily republican legislature all they do is shun him, and refuse to bend for the good of the state.

gbooksdc,

You give me hope. You're out there. Thank God. There are few.

In the midst of an ocean of North-Going-Zax/South-Going-Zax hate-o-holics, I encounter someone that looks at the grander scheme and SEES IT, saying . . .

"Hmm. Interesting. Looks to me like those guys are yelling at each other about gay marriage and celebrity and Paris Hilton and flag pins . . . WHILE THEY STICK THEIR OCTOPUS HANDS IN OUR POCKETS, deprive our children of education and opportunity, convince us that it is IN OUR INTEREST TO HAVE NO ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE, get us to believe it's better for all of us if our pay drops and jobs are shipped overseas, MEANWHILE growing multi-billion dollar fortunes for themselves and their cronies!!!"

YES, THE MOST IMPORTANT VOTING DEMOGRAPHIC IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS . . .

(drum roll!!!)

THE STOOPEE VOTE

WIN THE STOOPEE VOTE AND THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER

WANT THE WHITE HOUSE?

TALK TO STOOPEE! HE ELECTS PRESIDENTS!

WANT TO CONTROL THE MOST POWERFUL NATION IN THE WORLD?

Just convince that Neanderthal in a wifebeater slobbering stale beer down an ashtray chest while he scratches his nasty bits that . . .

1) You hate furihnerz more than that other guy
2) You're favorite colors is red, white and blue
3) You'll kill any man that doesn't support your right to kill any man
4) There's no problem that duct tape and a cluster bomb can't solve
5) The problem with kids is that they don't fight enough. A bunch of goddamn sissies!
6) Nobody ever has to pay for anything, particularly bridges or roads or schools.
7) SO NO GODDAMNED TAXES!
8) Yer stupider than that elitist, latte-sipping wimp of an uppity book-reader over there in glasses with white wine and all that stupid education
9) More smog and less forest
10) So's your face! Whatever!!! Hah, I win!!!

Meanwhile, there are WAY too many journalists that pander to the cavemen, saying, "You've gotta talk to Bubba - to the guy with the sixpack that hates Mexicans and thinks second-hand smoke should be mandatory for children, beginning at age five."

Maybe they're right.

Because, if the general drift of public discourse is any measure, we are a nation of drunken idiots - a people so convinced that stupidity is a mark of distinction that we stand proud of the fact that we can't tell the difference between the Georgia Russia invaded and the one Sherman burned through during the Civil War.

We are proudly dumb; watching our jobs shipped overseas; our unions destroyed; our children sick from lead-coated toys, the shipment of which our government LITERALLY REFUSES TO PREVENT, as this would reduce the profits of their Chinese business partners; our pocketbooks drained by Big Oil, even as Big Oil owns us to such an extent that we believe that THREE MONTHS WORTH OF DOMESTIC OIL will make ALL THE DIFFERENCE when it hits the market TEN YEARS AFTER OIL'S PEAK AND FIVE YEARS INTO HYBRID ELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY; our schools destroyed; our quality of life falling . . .

And we yuk, yuk, yuk it up and rev our Goober engines, spewing smoke while we puff on our Camels.

MIND YOU, our children are inheriting our national debt, our filth, our decimated economy - ALL THE PRODUCTS OF OUR WILLFUL STUPIDITY . . .

And we yuk, yuk, yuk it up and catch a buzz while we watch reality TV.

Pathetic. Freaking pathetic!!!

They are LITERALLY tearing up our Constitution in Washington.

And we're slurping another Belgian Bud and yuk, yuk, yukking it up - hanging on every turn in the Brett Favre Saga.

Pitiful!!!

Said Adlai Stevenson, "The American People deserve the government they get."

AND WE DO. OH, BROTHER, WE DO!!

Oh no, here we go again. The anti-gun lobby will be out if force, but the simple fact is that if Mr. Gwatney had had a gun, he could have defended himself. He could have merely said, Mr. Gunman, please don’t shoot me as I am going to get my gun out of my briefcase to defend myself. Better yet, the Mr. Gwatney could simply keep his gun out at all times and point it at everyone who walks into his office. That would have prevented this. Besides, control of guns would take away the right of this law abiding citizen from letting off steam because he lost his job. But instead of a rational discussion about the need to defend one’s self and the right to bear arms, we are going to hear more of this drivel about the sickness of our “gun” culture. And ignorance and tragedy continue…

If this guy was such a big Democrat as these neocons on here claim, isn't it a bit illogical that he would blame his own party for losing his job? Of course, logic is something that is missing from a neocon mind, along with education, common sense, decency etc. As far as praying for this family, exactly what good does that do? If your deity has a devine plan that is already predetermined, what is it in you that makes you think you can alter this plan? What about all the other devout Christians that prayed and lost loved ones anyway? You can't have it both ways. Either you are a realist or you're not!

WaPo HAS to take some control of these comments sections. The hate spewed here is truly creepy. I'd like to believe that all of these hateful posts whenever some political figure meets their demise is the result of a few twisted souls, but my fear is that these statements are representative of the readers of one of the country's premier newspapers, i.e., the brighter and more educated element of our society.

No one has a monopoly on hate. The hate expressed by Clinton backers towards Obama is easily the equal of any hate from McCain backers. And the hate by Dems towards McCain -- whatever else, a patriot who was tortured while serving this country, and a man who, on the whole has acted with admirable decency -- is disgraceful. Political philosophy is not always, or even usually, synonymous with character.

Here's the 411 -- a divided people are easier to manipulate and control. While you mutts are barking about Repub vs. Dem, a GOP-Dem coalition (a) shipped manufacturing jobs abroad, (b) told you to train for "new, better jobs" that (c) are conveniently offshored to Indians who will do the same job for 1/6th your pay. end result: higher business profits, no work for ordinary Americans. (Funny the only work we don't offshore is the military.) And you people are so dim, you only have a vague sense that somehow, you've been bamboozled. Pennsylvanians, who have seen their jobs vanish and along with them, their lifestyle, voted for Clinton -- who was a NAFTA handmaiden, the records prove it -- simply because Obama was a black guy. Stupid.

This climate of hate has resulted in an atmosphere of fear. Like DJ Hugueley says, when was the last time you saw kids playing outside? And as long as we take glee in the calamities that befall our "enemies", we will always be to afraid to go outside, figuratively.

America and Americans have enough enemies. Our countrymen are not our enemies, and we should not make them such. No one has a monopoly on virtue or evil. It is a mistake to live your life thusly, unexamined.

As for those who are trying to blame this on the entire republican party, and our current president...since you are hiding behind it, you should take a moment and look up "unity" in the dictionary, or maybe even send your great messiah a text message and ask him if he agrees with what you are doing.

The gunner could have just as easily been an Obama supporter as he could have been a republican. The only thing we know for sure is that this person was not in a sane state of mind.

As for the references to "loving guns", distraught and careless young people, "thugs", and "gangstas" are far more likely to be toting some type of "piece" or gun than your average republican voter. So if you're gonna say it, at least be fair about it.

Good Day.

Those who are writing the horrible post on this thread do not represent the core of the Republican constituency.

But I do.
This is an absolutely heinous crime.
No matter what the motivation.
The violent and racist language in these posts are inexcusable.

The police have not come forward with his motive or political affiliation at the time of my post.(that I have yet found)

One party verbally attacking another over this is also not solving anything.

The victim was a state official. Not a national one.

This cowardly act will have no effect on the national election.

So it is more likely that this man had a personal issue with the victim or the shooter was just plain nuts.

However: All of you out there who feel patriotic and uncontrollably angry.

Violent political speech and actions only serve to undermine and erode our electoral process.

This is one of the building blocks of this great nation.
This type of behavior does nothing to ensure our freedom or democracy.

This isn't about republican or democrat, nor is it about 'stupid' southerners. Someone was needlessly killed by someone who was crazy.

Virtually everyone in this country is stressed out, and I think we all need to place a lot less emphasis on political parties, and the government solving our problems, and concentrate on helping and caring for each other.

Democrats and republicans are ALL politicians in my book, and placing all our hopes in them solving all of our problems is foolish. This is OUR country, and OUR people.

As somebody who has experienced this sort of violence recently at a liberal church in the South I say that we must wait to find out what really drove this man. Was it politics? Was it personal? Do NOT jump to conclusions about him. If this was another act of right-wing terrorism like Jim Adkisson then we'll find out soon enough. But for now we don't know that and we shouldn't speculate. All we can do is pray for the victim's family and send whatever support we can. It matters a great deal to the family that they know they are not alone.

I'll also point out that the spokesperson for the Arkansas GOP went out of her way to express her sadness and sympathy at this time. Hers was a positive example for how we should respond at this point.

This is a senseless tragedy perpetrated by a sad, tormented man. Why bring hate and opposing political views into this? Will it bring back either of these two men from the dead? I am saddened for the future of our country as I read the venom being spewed on both sides of the political fence. It's time for us to come together as Americans and lift each other up when we are down (through poverty, job loss, illness, etc.). That's when the true American spirit shines through, not in moments like this. For an example, check out the longstanding friendship of Cal Thomas and Bob Beckel. In spite of being in different political parties, they co-wrote a book about working together and finding common ground. Let's pray for true bipartisanship like the days following 9/11. They seem a distant memory in the face of this tragedy.

Well, we haven't learned all the details yet, but I must say that I am not totally surprised by this terrible incident.

Until about four years ago, I lived in Arkansas (north central) for nearly fifteen years.

When I moved there from Texas, I had been a life-long Republican. After experiencing the rabid, right-wing, religious fanaticism of the area (almost entirely from and by people who had migrated to Arkansas from primarily the Midwest and from California), my political allegiance shifted to the Democratic party.

I experienced first hand some of the meanest and most corrupt "politics" and religious hypocrisy that I had ever seen.

Although I still have business interests in the area, I spend as little time in that part of Arkansas as possible.

NOTHING surprises when it comes to Arkansas "politics."

Posted by: DocChuck | August 13, 2008 8:44 PM

To everyone here ranting about liberals vs. conservatives, R vs. D - find me a news article that states that a) the murderer was a Republican/conservative/whatever, and b) that his shooting the chairman was motivated by his political beliefs.

Go ahead. I'll wait.

In the meantime, SHUT YOUR STUPID TRAPS because you have no idea about anything, obviously.

Posted by: JG | August 13, 2008 8:44 PM

The comments in this forum remind us of the dangers of partisan bickering. Remember George Washington's words in his farewell address regarding the two-party system and its' potential dangers:
"I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the state, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party, generally. The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty."
Ben Franklin's valuation of security vs. liberty:
"Those willing to give up a little liberty for a little security deserve neither security nor liberty."
The venom on these boards is exactly the type of behavior that our enemies would like to see from Americans. Division from within allows them the time to recouperate for future endeavors. What we need to do is work together as Americans to rebuild this country...not bicker at each other and divide it.

One has to wonder if the assassin was shot dead so that he couldn't tell anyone for him he was working. Perhaps, if we taught our police to shoot to disarm as we did prior to the 1990's instead of shooting to kill as in the former Soviet Union, then we would know the answer.

We are one people! The duality of the party system is illusion propped up to make us think we have a choice. Stop letting the rich drive the "us and them" scenario while they are robbing all of our wealth as we bicker. We all want the same basic things! George Bush and the ultra wealthy that put him in charge have polarized a once UNITED nation and created an invisible party that is using the GOP as a cloaking device. The scary thing is that some of us are willing to kill to keep the illusion alive!

OK, I see a lot of ignorant garbage here. You pukes on both the left and right, what drives you to such low lines?

Sad that someone died, but that is what happens when INDIVIDUALS are driven to extremes and decide to perform any criminal act such as murder. To turn it into a left vs right event is unwarranted.

The problem with the left is that you are group thinkers, you feel pride and shame based on each others actions. From where I am I feel no shame from this guys actions. I view him as a man who committed a crime and paid for it with his life. Who cares what his motivations. Even if people agree with WHY this mad man went in with guns blazing, that doesn't mean that they agree with the method and it certainly does nothing to validate some left view of the right.

If someone goes off and murders a republican does that mean that you are for that action? Is that why I see so many children trying to bash the right?

And why are these comments anonymous? You should all be held accountable for your ignorance. It is a sad day when a person is shot by a mad man but this is a world with mad people now and forever.

BTW, Obama is going to rape your farm animals and eat your babies. Just thought you should know. MUhahaha!

Dave, this space isn't a battle of ideas. So don't give up on humanity. Most here don't believe what they're writing and the few that do aren't of any importance. You must be new to this. It's pretty clear that over 95% of the comments are the equivalent of school yard taunts with no more intent than getting an even nastier response. Most have played by these rules for years. A few, like Rebel, seem a bit clueless about the boundaries but hopefully will learn safely. Quickly, too, for their sakes.

Remember, the reason no one has to logon to post is TO ATTRACT READERS. The game is designed precisely for this effect. I intend to read some of the other articles by the Post, skipping the comments (of course). Don't take it too seriously.

Oh, well, maybe the -----hmmm, do we call Squeeky Fromme liberal or just crazy? I mean, she was yelling about trees and so forth, so does that make her liberal? You know, I think part of being "liberal" is eschewing violence, and that just MIGHT mean that saying violent nuts can be liberals is a non sequitur.

I found out about the shooting shortly after it took place. I hoped that Bill Gwatney would be fine. I prayed for Bill's family. This was so senseless. Many of us are suffering, but we do our best to get by....day by day. How can people start throwing stones at Barack Obama; he had nothing to do with it. People are always trying to divide the people of this country, when we all have to work together towards a common good. PEACE BE STILL.

This is just so trajic. That poor man getting shot by those police officers, after doing the right thing. Corruption has it's price to pay. Now all those police officers involved with killing that poor man just for doing the right thing, cleaning up America, will have to pay the price of their actions. But that's what we can expect more of. Corruption will continue it's journey to self destruction. I just hate it that the poor man driving that pick up truck didn't get a chance to get somemore before he died., at least.

First the Republicans are shotgunning liberals in the church, now they are doing it at party headquarters... and when you read the comments by Republicans posted here - they seem to be of the same class and mentality as these shooters. There are of course zealots on both sides of the aisle, but the real psychotic ones seem to belong to the GOP party, as evidenced by their acts of senseless violence, and actual cheering about it here. I don't think there are words really to express my shock, anger and disgust at the character of these people - nothing really seems adequate. I believe though, that the psychos doing the attacks so far and the psychos in these boards are the minority. I blame the hatemongers like Limbaugh, Hannity, and Coulter, who literally devote their lives to whipping up those already on the edge of reality into a greater frenzy with demonizing propaganda - because that's all they know how to do for money.

Here's an idea for you a**holes. While there is still time, let's create a gun buying frinzy, stockpile plenty of ammunition, elect a n**ger for president, and a full democratic congress and senate.

Then start our own civil war by killing the n**ger president and all the newly elected democratic politicians.

After that's done in one quick attack, we then choose sides and start killing all you others; illegal aliens, muslims, mid-easterns, africans, mexicans, mid-eastern-cans, etc. till only the true native amercans and pure white anglo-saxon protestants are the only ones left alive.

After all this has taken place the newly formed government will be made up of native americans that can really lead this country into a world superpower.

Murray's absolutely right. Whether it's an ongoing occupation with no end game (and hence no end) or a civil war, it's not a war. A war would be between nations and we would know who we were fighting against.

Afghanistan is where the terror plans for 9/11 were hatched and that's where Obama wants to focus his resources. To finish the smoke him out dead or alive job that 43 can't or won't. Why is this so difficult to understand?

Can somebody explain to me exactly how Obama's plant to beef up troop levels in Afghanistan is "waving the white flag"? Once again, people are getting confused about what the "war" in Iraq is. IT'S A CIVIL WAR that we caused by taking Saddam out of power (yes, yes, I know, Rush would call me an American hating liberal for pointing that out). Obama would like to wind down our involvement in that civil war to concentrate on the more real threat of terrorists regrouping in Afghanistan.

MEMO TO JOHN MCCAIN: YOU CANNOT "WIN" ANOTHER COUNTRY'S CIVIL WAR, hence we are not "winning" the war in Iraq.

Conservaties are wackos who want to bathe in the blood of their imagined "enemies." They want to drink their blood out of goblets and dance on their dead bodies.

Conservatives hate all other human beings. Every conservative is capable of killing someone at any time.

Liberal media:
ABC
NBC
CNN
the WaPo
NY Times
The Boston Globe
NPR

Conservative Media (aka the Bush/McCain mouthpiece):
Wash. Times
NY Post
Every Southern Newspaper
and of course FAUX NEWS CORP.

Looking at how many people actually follow the second list (grand total of 6 people), its no wonder that they have to try extra hard to bias the news.

Conservatives don't hate all life, just life that isn't directly related to them. If some Mexican wanted to abort her child, I doubt anyone in the Bible Belt would raise a hand in objection. Unless, of course, they were Christian.

WoW! I don't begin to claimto have the answer, but we relly all need to take a chill pill on the hate speech! Right/Left it doesn't matter. Have we all forgotten that we are supposed to be Americans first? In the final analysis it doesn't matter who is right or wrong, all that matters is who's still standing. As a usually proud liberal I am ashamed at some of the vitriol I am seeing here from both sides. A man died. An Americaan man that stood for what he believed in. Whether I agree or disagree with his views I am sure he was doing what he felt was best for his family and his country. I remeber a man once said "I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it." That politicol discourse hascome to this should be a shame for all of us, we sound like a bunch of squabling hate filled zombies. BOTH sides.

The killer was a democrat. You dem posters need to get a friggin clue. It's one thing to nearly always be wrong. No one's perfect and that's forgivable if you admit your mistakes. It's quite another to deliberately lie and to continue to do so. Mind you, it's the latter that annoys people enough to push them to do things like this killer did when all hope is lost. You may want to back off the silly rhetoric lest you see Barry Boy lose by a percent point come November.

First of all, abortions went DOWN under Democratic rule, so don't tell me about the "we hate babies" Democrats. Better informed people with access to birth control and information (remember information?) have fewer unexpected pregnancies and need fewer abortions. If you're so in love with babies then, how many have YOU signed up to adopt? Thought not.

If the guy said he was "former employee and campaign volunteer for the Democratic Party," does it occur to you that, oh, it might have been a lit to get to where he was going? I'm sure John Wilkes Booth would've said he just wanted to pay Lincoln his regards too. Speaking of which, killing someone that high up politically is not a killing or murder, it's an assassination.

If Bush and the rightwingers are so in love with everything living, how does he account for the hundreds of thousands of dead civilian Iraqis, who are REALLY liberated now? Or all the death warrants Bush signed as the TX governor? Where in the Bible--if you stop thumping it long enough to read it--does it endorse capital punishment (please, something a little deeper than an eye for an eye).

How come they don't say who the shooter was? Come on they must have ID him by now! Gun registration, license plate, VIN on his truck, mug shot, fingerprints, or even someone must have recognized him by now!

I can save them the trouble:

gun registration: of course not (he's a conservative)

license plate: anywhere between Alabama and Virginia

his truck: 1981 rusted clapped out Chevrolet

probable names: Billy Ray, Jed, Bubba, Otis, Jimbo, Clyde

Posted by: Anonymous | August 13, 2008 7:54 PM

How do we even know that it was a Republican doing the shooting? It could have been a Democrat fed up with the way the party is going. I know quite a few registered Democrats who vote Republican because the party has changed so much from what it used to be.

Remember, the Democrat party used to be the more conservative of the two.

Friends, to lose one unique and irreplaceable soul is a loss that takes away from all of us. To hate another is to hate self, to kill another is to kill self. We die almost before we know we are alive. We hunger to be valued and loved and yet we withhold it from one another. In the wake of this senseless tragedy many have chosen to add hurt and hate to themselves. I wish that for none of you. I respect your opinions. I hope you all realize we need each other and need to help each other. Please remember what you really want and what you really need, its in your heart and it makes you care about how you treat others.

President Bush came into office saying that he would raise the level of national discourse. I believe he kept his part of the bargain. It would seem that it is the Democrats who have chosen the low road for the past 7 years.

The amount of invective leveled at President Bush is unprecedented. He has done nothing to deserve it. He has stayed above partisan disputes and has made the good of the country his only priority. If he made any "political" mistakes, it was because he put the good of the country over mere popularity. That is something that I suppose a rock star politician like Obama wouldn't understand.

I sincerely feel for the victims family whenever someone with far too many loose screws commits something like this. At the same time I also have to stand in utter AWE of the Wingdings who feel the inane need to enjoy anothers pointless misery via "hahahaha's", venomous blame of the political opposition, or fault legitimate political commentators. Our valid political parties have NEVER condoned violence against their opposition. And to blame pundits for these types of acts is ludicrous. Yes, AM radio has a proliferation of right leaning commentators, however, no valid radio hosts endorse violence. These accusations appear to come from those who hear what they want to hear, not what is said. Finally, the left wing influences or outright controls ALL other media (TV, newspapers, FM radio, PBS, NPR, etc.) and yet the left is still angry that the right has one lone outlet for comment and discussion. I have to wonder why some insist that only their own point of view be expressed regardless of our RIGHT to free speech. Can't stand the heat of legitimate opposition?

No wonder there's so much rage and fear out there. Education is the key to recognizing truth versus lies. Unfortunately, Arkansas is not real big on education.

I wonder if all the hate speech of the Rightwing blowhards had any influence on these crazies? Let's review some of what the Right wingers have said:

"I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus -- living fossils -- so we will never forget what these people stood for." (Rush Limbaugh)

"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building." (Ann Coulter)

"I'll tell you who should be tortured and killed at Guantanamo -- every filthy Democrat in the U.S. Congress." (Sean Hannity)

"To fight only the al-Qaeda scum is to miss the terrorist network operating within our own borders ... Who are these traitors? Every rotten radical left-winger in this country, that's who." (Michael Savage)

And these people are the heart and soul of the republican party. And there are Christians who are still republican??? Amazing.

Your homegrown terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. Perspective is something you can't really put a spin on or convince others about. Honestly, I could care less if all politicians in both political parties went extinct. What has any politician done that you could honestly praise them for? Bush has a higher approval rating than congress. Thats pretty telling of itself. What happend to the democrats promise to withdraw troops? Don't blame it on republicans, they are not in charge of congress. Why are the Democrats now considering drilling offshore when they promised the public they won't allow it? You can't take any politician or political party at there word. They have there own self serving agenda. They don't know how to tell the truth nor will they ever. Telling the truth will not get you elected.

Posted by: Just thinking out loud | August 13, 2008 7:05 PM

How come Republicans are allowed to blame rock'n'rollers for suicides and school shootings but liberals can't blame gun-loving Republicans for senseless shootings? O'Reilly led the charge against Marilyn Manson post-Columbine but he's keeping his mouth shut now. Effing hypocrit.

I reviewed your comments, Personnaly, I feel very deeply for the man who passed away, for his family and for the Democratic party in Arkansas. I also feel sad that these notes, although marginally constitutional, in some cases, are so negative on both sides of the debate. After readying them, I think your all nuts and need to wash your skulls out with lye soap.

Read these posts and weep for our country. That anyone could rejoice or spew such hate in our country over the death of anyone should be a source of shame for our nation. Have we come to this?
That anyone could advocate murder?
What are we, that we have sunk so low?
Soviet Russia? Nazi Germany? Christians vs. Protestants? Have we so forgotten why this country was founded?
There must be tears in Heaven...

Liberals, of which this blog is clearly full of, are America Hating socialists bent on the total destruction of America. They have no moral values evident by their total loony thoughts and actions. I don't understand why you America/American hating lefties don't simply relocate to Russia or China where I am sure you would be happier. Perhaps you would get there and end up returning to this most awesome country (USA) wondering why you ever became liberals appreciating the freedoms and opportunities that hard working conservative Americans understand and enjoy. IT'S ABOUT YOUR FREEDOM YOU LIBERAL IDIOTS. Feel free to turn it over to Nancy and Harry. They obviously don't think you are smart enough to be free.

Let's see... Repubs want everyone to be just like them. Dems want everyone to be themselves-you know-individuals. Repubs want everyone to believe just in what they believe in. Dems want everyone to believe in what is right for them. Repubs send jobs overseas. Dems want to keep them in this country. Repubs tax poor people. Dems want to tax rich people. Um, so why do people stick up for Republicans? I thought this was supposed to be a free country?

Posted by: hmmm | August 13, 2008 6:56 PM

I think it is a shame that so many are using this incident to play the victim and make blame on Republicans. This is truly a sad and tragic event and a loss for both parties. I also find it shameful that these type of articles are so vindictive. Why don't they mention any of the many statements of sorrow from the other numerous political parties? Don't be foolish and fall into the trap. They exploiting the American public for their own corporate greed.

I see very, very few rational comments on this blog which leads me to draw the conclusion this good old USA is full of nuts. Overall happiness among U.S. residents has not changed much over the years, according to the latest survey by the Pew Research Center that finds 34 percent of adults are very happy.

Among 3,014 telephone respondents, half reported being pretty happy, and 15 percent said they are not too happy.

The survey, released this week, points out several disparities based on lifestyle, beliefs and political persuasion:

Republicans are happier than Democrats.
People who worship frequently are happier than those who don't.
The rich are happier than the poor.
Whites and Hispanics are happier than blacks.
Married people are happier than the unmarried.
Dog owners and cat owners rate the same.
Sunbelt residents are happier than everyone else.
About 45 percent of Republicans said they were very happy, compared with 30 percent of Democrats. Republicans have been happier in surveys going back to 1972, the Pew study notes.

The reason might seem obvious, since "Republicans tend to have more money than Democrats, and—as we've already discovered—people who have more money tend to be happier," the report states.

I don't care what the shooter read, or what media he listened to or watched. I don't care if he had permits for his guns or not, I don't care what his color, name, nationality was. Murder is NEVER a civil solution to anything and simply cannot be excused. It's a sin, a moral wrong, evil, and cruel. It's selfish, and ugly and final. All humans are degraded by it. We can all find the empathy within ourselves to give the suffering family of Mr. Gwatney some peace of mind. It's the human thing to do. If you find yourself unable to do it, please respectfully keep quiet and let those who wish to/and need to grieve do so in peace.

I am a life-long Unitarian. I am also a proud, liberal Democrat who carried an M-60 machine gun and served in the Arctic with the 1st Eskimo Scouts as a staff sergeant. I am horrified by the endless hate spewed by Limbaugh, OReilly, Savage, and Hannity. They found books by Savage, O'Reilly, and Hannity in the apartment of the man who walked into the Unitarian church and killed two. If you substitute the word "Jew" for Liberal in their vitriolic drivel, there isn't much to separate them from the Nazi.

Wonder what this man liked to read? Wonder what, if any, talk radio he tuned in to?

Wonder why he would kill a man in cold blood. Wonder if the "left" is always trying to "take your guns away" there is always a gun handy anytime an insane person want to kill in cold blood.

Why are all conservatives ruthless murderers?

Posted by: BB | August 13, 2008 6:42 PM

I believe this will become a trend in this nation so get use to it. Political parties are pushing special interest agendas that don't sit well with alot of people. Democrats and Republican's alike are not acting in the best interest of the public. All they do anymore is lie and spin the truth to gain a political advantage so they can get in power or stay in power. I doubt this will be the first or the last of this type of incident. Unfortunate as it is, and my heart goes out to the family, I believe our current political system and all the rhetoric and lies is a breeding ground for this type of violence. People flaming and accusing others will further fan the flames.

We need to get behind Barrack Obama. His social change will encourge a more peaceful nation. He will redistribute the wealth and provide everyone with health care. He and the Democrat majority will also get the guns. This change may encourage some internal conflict but in the end a more social friendly government will prevail.

All conservatives are a threat to our society's security.

Posted by: BB | August 13, 2008 6:35 PM

Wright's hate Whitey ranting and the black church support he rec'd,and Hillary's ugliness." He was a good guy driven to extremes. We must not let them continue to try and divide us so that they can keep things as is which, for us will not be and in fact things will get worse if we stay on this course, but hey atleast the rich will be okay...

LA and FL now have new laws where gun nuts' rights overrule property rights and employer rights.

Crazy employees can carry their guns in their cars right into the parking lot and the employer isn't even allowed to ask if they have guns, much less forbid them to have guns. On the employer's property. While the employee is at work.

I am appalled that states would be crazy enough to take away our property rights and give them to gun nut employees who can now drive to work armed to the teeth and shoot up the place.

Posted by: Tom3 | August 13, 2008 6:18 PM

This is so sad.

And many of you should be ashamed of yourselves. The individual who shot the chairman obviously had serious mental issues. It's so sad that you use death of a human being to point fingers at adversarial political parties.

Too bad the guy didn't have a bigger gun and a better aim. You liberal schmucks can go to hell. You are so incensed that not everyone thinks and acts the way you do. It's pathetic. From my point of view it's YOU who have been brainwashed with years of liberal, anti-American propaganda. Go hug a tree or maybe take PETA out for a steak.

Posted by: John | August 13, 2008 6:17 PM

Isn't it convenient that the shooter has died? Isn't that what happened to Oswald? Anyone remember the movie, "Parallax View"?
That'll get you're conspiracy juices flowing.

Of course people are jumping to conclusions. First one to the Front page defines the narrative. Is it "evangelical right-wing nut-job determined to free America of Muslim-loving Liberals"? or "Depressed, laid-off worker tracks down and murders CEO of company"? Either way, we should be able to blame it on Republicans, eh?

Posted by: thebob.bob | August 13, 2008 6:16 PM

Wingnut Sam @2. For the last time, no one is trying to take away your penis, i mean gun.

There is a difference between taking away guns and getting stricter laws passed so crazy people can't kill innocent people in cold blood.

I've been saying for years now that the Repukes have created their own fact-free fantasy land where their ideology always triumphs. It's a Rovian Bizarro World.

This is done not only by the usual suspects, FOX News and the WashTimes, but the entire corporate media. Karl Rove built up a billion dollar propaganda machine that distributes talking points fresh daily to the corporate media.

PervOreilly actually tried to deny he gets these. Hell, he reads them verbatim on the air!

You can even see this in here, the Repukes all speak with the same voice, like the Borg. It's scary.

MAking up your own world where Valerie Plame wasn't even in the CIA is called a "psychotic break with reality."

Repukes are all PSYCHOS. Get ready for more of this, coming soon to a street near you.

That makes some sense. My first thought was that it was a pissed off customer of one of his dealerships. In the AR & TN area, Gwatney is known more for the auto sales than politics.

The overwhelming majority of the dKos community wished Snow and Novak a full recovery. Go dig through the stories, diaries and comments related to Novak and Snow (don't forget Specter too); not that actually knowing what the heck you're talking about would change your point of view. dKos is an open forum that is policed by the entire community (instead of a strictly moderated and censored site like so many of those used by the Right), obviously anyone is free to say whatever they want, but your statement about dKos is a crock of chite when considering the dKos reaction to Novak and Snow.

According to that logic, Japan shouldn't be blamed for Pearl Harbor, nor the Nazis for the Holocaust. So if those two examples prove there can be a right side and a wrong side, or perpetrator and innocent victim, then the Constitution and the American public are the innocent victims of the Fascist Right Wingers who don't even have a CLUE what America really stands for --- and it ain't White Trash Rule.

Both sides do have serious problems, look at the posts, not sorrow for the death of someone, but blaming each other in a continual cycle of nausea for things not proven. Sad, and beside the point at this juncture.

Posted by: Yes | August 13, 2008 5:45 PM

Deplorable actions such as these often result from extremism. The ultra-nationalistic bent of the last few years only heightens the possibility. Of course, critical thought and reasonable discussion could lead to compromise; however,it appears these skills are lost or relegated to antiquity in this country. How sad that the close-minded and extremist attitudes of our fellow citizens leads to tragedies such as this.

Posted by: dpb | August 13, 2008 5:45 PM

We all lose when things like this happen. Blaming one side or the other shows the lack of comprehension of some of the posters. This is American on American violence. Seeing each other as bigger enemies than the foreign ones trying to kill us just means that we will be wrapped up in our inter-family squabbling, allowing the outsiders all the time they need to make sure both sides are demolished.

So far, the violence is all being committed by the Right. With the killer of 'liberals'- to use the term of the shooter- in the Unitarian Church to this murder of the Democratic Chair of Arkansas, we Dems must arm ourselves against these Neo_Nazis. As for my self I'm a well-practiced and well scoring pistol shooter -from just point aim- so I am ready and, if need be willing to take on the Right-Wing crazies.

I am waiting for IRA response to this. We need everyone to get guns. First just shot guns. Then when we have enough incidents of automatic weapons, everyone should get automatic weapons. So we can take down the shooter. Then eventually we should get training to look out for snipers and take them down. Wait we dont need cops then. Eventually we wont need mililary. At some point everyone will get grenades and artillary. Then Rocket launchers.

Given the facts that:

A) The gunman went into Arkansas Democratic Party Headquarters and insisted on seeing The Chairman (and not by name) before shooting him.

B) Republican gunman Jim Adkisson recently went into a CHURCH with a shotgun to shoot the liberal congregation (on July 29).

I do not think "it's presumptuous and rather exploitative to infer that what happened had anything to do with party politics."

Rather, I think it's the result of a constant flow of hateful Right-wing rhetoric inflaming (their own) frustrated zealots. This hateful rhetoric demonizes and dehumanizes the "opposition", who are in fact, FELLOW U.S. CITIZENS!

The National Rifle Association and the gun lobby in Washington prevent aspiring office holders from stating the obvious: Renewed efforts at gun control are a must if this nation is not to disintegrate into complete chaos.

But do you hear Obama or McCain addressing this issue in a constructive manner?
