Better Than a Root Canal
By Anne E. Kornblut
CHICAGO -- Sen. Joe Biden was in an unexpected location when he got the call from Sen. Barack Obama on Thursday night: he was at the dentist with his wife, Jill, who was getting a root canal.
Obama was calling from a campaign bus in Virginia, an aide said. Biden, after accepting the offer to serve as Obama's vice presidential running mate, waited to tell the rest of his family until they were gathered around the kitchen table on Friday night.
"He said, 'Guess what? I'm going to be Barack Obama's running mate,'" an aide said, paraphrasing Biden's words.
When Michelle Obama and Jill Biden met on Saturday, after speaking first by phone, they had what one person in the room described as an "instant comfort level." They discussed the pending glare of the cameras at the convention, sharing anecdotes about their children. The two families spent at least an hour together on Saturday -- and are planning to campaign together again after the convention.
