Biden Thanks the Delaware Delegation
By Perry Bacon Jr.
LITTLETON, Colo. -- In his first public remarks since he was introduced as Barack Obama's running mate, an emotional Sen. Joe Biden thanked Delaware Democrats for their longtime support at a meeting of the state's delegation.
"This is a great honor, this is a great honor being nominated and I'm proud of it, but it pales in comparison to the honor of representing you," the Delaware senator told a crowd of several dozen in a room at the Marriott in this Denver suburb.
"I wish we could have done this in private," he continued (a group of more than two dozen journalists now track his every move). "I don't know whether I would have made it through a lot of tough times in my life without you guys."
"The Delaware Democratic Party has been my family," he said, drawing applause and tears from a crowd that includes much of Biden's family, including his son Beau, who is the state's attorney general.
Referring to his new role, Biden admitted it was an adjustment, saying "I'm excited to be on the team, I've never been on a team, I've been a one-man band."
He spent much of his 12-minute speech lavishing praise on the leaders of his new team, Michelle and Barack Obama.
"She gave a window to the American people of who she is and who he is," Biden said of Michelle Obama's speech to the convention. "It was absolutely incredible."
Of the presumptive Democratic nominee, Biden said, "He has that sixth sense. This guy's got it. This guy's got it. He's going to make you proud and I am honored to be part of helping make sure the first African American ... gets to be president of the United States."
