Biden Speech a Family Affair

By Perry Bacon, Jr.
DENVER -- For Joe Biden, politics has always been a family affair, and his biggest night on the national stage will be no exception.

While Sen. Barack Obama hired a full staff to work with the vice presidential nominee even before he was selected, campaign aides said the two key players in crafting tonight's speech by the Delaware senator were his son, Beau, and his sister, Valerie, who has run many of his political campaigns, including his failed 2008 presidential run. Also at the helm were Anthony Blinken and Ted Kaufman, two longtime aides.

They were helped by a number of veterans of Democratic convention speeches past, including Andrei Cherny, a former speechwriter for Al Gore and John Kerry, and David Axelrod, Obama's chief strategist.

The speech will mix Biden's biography with a sharp critique of Sen. John McCain's record, particularly on foreign policy issues.

But it will also serve as a test of how well the long-winded senator adapts to his new role as one of the chief advocates of a candidate who likes to be on time and on message. In a well-received speech Saturday in Springfield, Biden also managed to mention that his wife was "drop-dead gorgeous" and that her doctorate degree might be a "problem."

Either way, millions of Americans will learn that Biden considers them "ladies and gentlemen," a phrase he uses to start and end speeches, as well as transition between sentences.

The Clinton's "Great Americans" did a great job with class for Obama and Biden. The torch has been passed to Obama and it is very bright, I just hope he does not let it burn out because his future actions do not match his hype.

In Washington talk is cheap and lobbyists shape politicians actions. Example, Biden helped the credit card companies in his home state of Delaware craft the new bankruptcy laws that favored the credit card companies over the public.

The time for change is now for Obama and Biden if elected to prove to all American's that change means putting "we the people" first not second to Washington lobbyists.

Go Obama and Biden - just don't let us down like Bush and Cheney. Hopefully the Bush/Cheney nightmare will end so that finally hope and pride in America can return after 8 long years.

Anyone who thought the drop-dead gorgeous comment and the kidding about a doctorate being a problem (when he's so incredibly proud of his wife's doctorate) were reasons for concern, is not in the top ranks of political operatives.

I can't imagine you would hire someone known for his spontaneity and for going a bit off message, and then ask him not to be himself. I don't believe for a minute Obama's team is that dumb. They have been brilliant so far. Let's assume they know that they should "let Biden be Biden" and that it's part of his charm. After all, it was Biden they picked!

Joe Biden is a good and dedicated Public Servant who has served the U.S. in a distinguished manner for over half his lifetime. I am looking forward to his well thought out and integrated speech this evening.
