President Bush and Vice President Cheney will not attend the GOP convention tomorrow as scheduled, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters today, citing the need to prepare for the massive hurricane bearing down on the Gulf Coast. First Lady Laura Bush is still planning to travel to Minnesota for the event, Perino said.
"We are working on alternate preparations and we'll provide details as soon as possible," press secretary Dana Perino said in a statement. Officials have said one possibility is for Bush to address the convention by satellite video.
Bush will soon meet with FEMA officials in Washington before making brief remarks on the storm. The president spoke earlier in the day to New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, telling him that he was "getting ready to go through this with him again," Perino said.
Perino said Nagin said the forecast was poor but that he was pleased so far with the coordination effort by Homelans Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and FEMA.
