ABC News Producer Arrested

By Howard Kurtz
DENVER -- An ABC News producer was arrested outside a downtown hotel here Wednesday while he and a camera crew tried to shoot footage of corporate donors leaving a meeting with a group of Democratic senators.

Asa Eslocker, who works with the network's investigative unit, was charged with trespass, interference and failure to follow a lawful order. He was released four hours later on a $500 bond.

"We expect to see this kind of behavior in Myanmar, not in Denver, Colorado, at a national political convention where a reporter is trying to videotape big-money donors trying to meet with elected officials," said ABC spokesman Jeffrey Schneider.

Footage of the incident showed one police officer constantly pushing Eslocker as the producer walked backwards across the street, and another officer placing his hand around Eslocker's neck. Eslocker kept saying that it was a public street and asking what law he was violating. Schneider said Esocker never entered the Brown Palace Hotel, where the meeting was taking place.

The footage was shown on ABC's "World News" tonight. Eslocker was working with chief investigative reporter Brian Ross, who does stories on conventions and donors every four years. Schneider said the arrest was initiated by an off-duty sheriff's officer working as a security guard for the Brown Palace.

Jamie Glennon, a spokeswoman for Denver's Joint Information Center, said Eslocker "was advised numerous times by the police before he was apprehended to stop blocking the sidewalk and entryway to the hotel."

American First

"Now show some proof where the Denver cops are influenced by the Dems?" Proof? The city is RUN by democrats! How could they NOT be 'influenced' by democrats?

"I dont believe the police departments follow their local leaderships advice..." So you think they just establish policy ignoring who their bosses are and don't worry about keeping their JOBS? Put down the BONG.

"So were you outraged at the DC police activities during bushes first inauguration?" Guess what - DC is ALSO run by DEMOCRATS as is NYC!

"...these orders came from the White House." In your dreams - police are PAID by local government.

"... the NYPD round up everybody during their convention in 04. " Again, NYC = LIBERAL THUGS in control but, are you referring to the liberal morons running around with urine filled squirt guns spraying RNC delegates? I think there's more than enough reason for them to be detained (and PUNCHED REPEATEDLY I think many would agree...)

The Democratic Party is become the Communist Party of American. Now a person cannot walk and film on a public sidewalk. I saw the police arresting the ABC man on TV and the arrest was unconstitutional. Also saw all the rich lobbist that Pelosi had at a party, each giving the Democrats $100,000 plus, this being done privately and hidden from public view. The Democrats are dangerous and they are phoney just like Obama.

You need to put the GOP kool aid down. Gitmo is full of terrorists that tried to attack us. That is laughable. I guess you only read what news you feel worthy, other wise you would know that a majority had nothing against our country. They were sold out by their buddies looking for the bounty. I guess you believe everything Dubya says.

And Bull Moose, where were you in 04? The NYC cops rounded up thousands, most who were just walking down the street and held them for up to 2 days. Were you outraged then or just when it happens a Dem event?

For the 6 years that the Republicans had George Bush as president and a majority of the Senate, and 4 years a majority in the House, the US has suffered incredibly. Economy, security, energy, deficit, environment, inflation, housing and world-wide prestige, just to name a few. Oh and the debacle in Iraq too.

And now half the country is thinking of electing another Republican as president? How sad indeed.

Hey idiot lib Obamaniacs! Four words: "Watch The F__n Video, Stupid!"

He was standing on a public sidewalk, trespass does not apply. If they were "blocking" the entryway to the hotel, (which was never claimed by the police, BTW) the reasonable response would have been to have him step away toward the curb.

Instead, the Denver police which has been in the grip of the DNC for the past few weeks pushed this man into the street (imminent threat of harm, anyone?) and then said keep going to the other side of the street, because "You're blocking traffic."

Glad they got this on video. No DNC duck-n-weave will get them out of this.

Posted by: Bull Moose | August 28, 2008 6:17 PM | Report abuse

It makes absolutely no difference that it happened at the DNC...the Republicans would have allowed the same thing to occur. We have an unquestionable right to know the name and face of every corporate weasel who's trying to brown-nose EITHER party for preferential treatment.

Only someone with the raw nerve to run for the presidency one day without their help, and be willing to say "the gravy train is over" can put an end to it. Someone with both principles and charisma to head up a major third-party challenge one day.

It will happen, and the special interests will wet themselves when it does....

In response to "American Post", the actions of these police officers are not comparable to Gitmo or Bush, as you stated. This is totally ridculous! Gitmo is filled with terrorists who have tried to attack our country. Denver police do not belong arresting a journalist or photographer in America. We happen to have free speech here, something the far left liberals have forgotten!

Mike M,

I dont believe the police departments follow their local leaderships advice on policing unless we are back in the south during the 60's. So were you outraged at the DC police activities during bushes first inauguration? They threw people to the ground and maced quite a few folks, not only that one of their detectives tried to infiltrate one of the peace groups and kept wanting them to start trouble. When they didnt he maced them, these orders came from the White House. Now show some proof where the Denver cops are influenced by the Dems? How about the GOP that had the NYPD round up everybody during their convention in 04. Now that has been proven time and again. Your statements have not been proven. Show me the magic memo...

Posted by: American First | August 28, 2008 3:38 PM | Report abuse

Hey "America First", I hate to be the one to break the news to you but Denver is a large city run almost exclusively by liberal DEMOCRATS for a long time. Take a guess WHO is 'in charge' of these out of control Denver police? So how exactly does this have anything to do with George Bush?

Posted by: mike m | August 28, 2008 3:04 PM | Report abuse

Next they'll come up with an excuse to pull out their guns and just shoot you instead of arresting you. Great going Denver Police; TRAMPLING our Constitution and behaving exactly like the Gestapo. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

I live in the Denver area and used to be down in Denver every weekend when single.

The Denver police department are well known thugs pumped up on roids and looking to beat the crap out of people every weekend. It is sport to them. They rarely reach out and hit, instead the grab you with multiple roided thugs and slam your face into the stone walls of most the buildings down there or into the street or sidewalk.

And then of course, they say the person they beat up charged them or some other garbage.

Bear in mind this city has been run by Democrats for decades and they have refused to reign in their roided up nazis thugs. And they likely won't since they face no real competition in the political process because the city is full of Democrats.

Welcome to the future police state. Socialism, communism and all totalitarian governments (dedicated to equility of course) are always enforced by overwhelming violence on their own citizens. It has never been different. German Nazis and SS, Soviet Union, China, North Korea, North Vietnam, Cambodia, Italian Facism, etc etc....

Be prepared America...this is where Obama wants to take us. For our own good of course...

Posted by: Josef | August 28, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Folks, this has nothing to do with Obama or McCain. This has to do with a Denver Police Department that has been out-of-control and lawless for decades. For example, it was found back in 2002 that they were spying on ordinary citizens to the point where they had even classified the Quakers as an "anti-government terrorist group." Yes, *Quakers*, those folks who are so pacifist that if you walk up to one and slug him, he will turn the other cheek so you can slug that one too.

Unfortunately, the majority of Americans don't mind that their police forces are acting like paramilitary goons. They just don't want to be bothered with that "democracy" stuff, it's too much work, and besides, American Idle is on. Most Americans, it seems, would prefer that the cops be judge, jury, and executioner. So much easier that way. So freedom becomes Freedom(tm), a trademark of Corporate America that is like lite beer -- less taste, less filling, less of what once made America the greatest nation on Earth. And nobody gives a flip, or cares, or bothers doing anything about it because, well, American Idle is on, we gotta have our priorities straight, right? Right? Right?!!

Posted by: badtux | August 28, 2008 1:53 PM | Report abuse

Yes, as long as they were helping Democrats the police are always right! Use the POWER OF THE STATE to bully and intimidate the press. Typical liberal double standard...freedom of speech is only for Democrats right?

I thought disent was the highest form of patriotism??

This is EXACTLY what you can expect if Obama wins. Look at what they are doing to anyone looking onto Obama's links to Bill Ayers (the American terrorist and murderer). They are filing lawsuits, threatening boycotts and criminal charges against stations running a political ad for God's sake!! They essense of the First Ammendment, under attack by the campaign of the Chicago Thug, Barrack Obama.

His entire political career is been consistent with this. Every opponent he EVER faced, yes ever, have been knocked of the ballots by Obama's lawyers, or they have broken into sealed divorce records and smeared them all over the news. This is Chicago politics and most of the time Obama was using it against other Democrats!! Obama himself said his strategy was to bring a “gun to a knife fight.”

Don’t be fools. Do your own research!!

Freedom of Speech?

I am astounded by the ignorance that surrounds free speech, The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled towards maintaing the integrity of the First Amendment. In fact it has called the press "The fourth branch of government". For those Conservatives railing against the "Liberal Reporter", remember ABC broadcasts Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and more Conservative voices. Would you want them shoved into the street too? All Conservatives, Liberals and Americans rely on freedom of speech. As far as the police, I think they're in need of some basic civil rights education. They didn't violate some obscure rule known only to those who it's important to, they shoved the FIRST AMENDMENT, along with the reporter, into the street! THE FIRST! What's up with that? They have a tough job yes but we don't give the hard working postal worker a pass after they shoot up the place do we?

As far as where the reporter was standing, the sidewalk, here's what the U.S. Supreme Court ruled about that. I think it's even simple enough for a thug to understand.

The more that a sidewalk or street resembles other sidewalks or streets, the more likely it is that courts will consider it a protected public forum. For instance, the Supreme Court found that the sidewalk surrounding the Supreme Court building itself was a public forum because it was indistinguishable from other sidewalks in Washington, D.C. Grace, 461 U.S. at 179 (“The sidewalks comprising the outer boundaries . . . are indistinguishable from any other sidewalks in Washington, D.C., and we can discern no reason why they should be treated any differently.”).

We need to demand that the police learn to respect the citizens, we're the ones who have empowered them and we actually have the ability to disempower them. They work for us, as much as they may not want to admit it, we're their bosses. Let's get that straight.

Historic, landmark, unprecedented ... Who do you think is behind the unexplainable rise of an inexperienced freshman Senator from Illinois? The "fairy tale" Obama is a mass-marketing phenomenon not a real person with a track record of accomplishments. So ABC tried to look behind the curtains to see who really is pulling the strings - corporate donors who wish to be anonymous, thank you - and by the way you are under arrest.

I certainly hope that the reporter in question, as a citizen, files a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the Howard Hotel for false prisonment.

When corporations hire goons, they should be sued out of business. It doesn't matter that the goons are also corrupt city police officials.

There's only one way to stop the police from falsely arresting us citizens, and that is to sick the lawyers on the city of Denver and that hotel.
