McCain's Denver Headquarters Evacuated

Updated 7:43 p.m.
By Robert Barnes
John McCain's headquarters in suburban Denver was evacuated this afternoon after a worker opened a threatening letter and discovered white powder inside. A McCain spokesman said a similar letter was sent to a McCain office in Manchester, N.H.

McCain spokesman Jeff Sadosky said both letters were sent from Denver and addressed to McCain in handwritten block lettering. Sadosky said the letter sent to a McCain headquarters in suburban Centennial, Colo., contained a threatening message and a "unknown amount of an unidentified white powder."

The campaign then alerted other McCain offices around the country and a similar letter from Denver was discovered in Manchester, N.H. Sadosky did not know if that letter had been opened or if it contained powder.

Linda Watson, a spokeswoman for Sky Ridge Medical Center in suburban Centennial, said four workers from the office drove themselves to the hospital. She said they underwent decontamination procedures, but showed no signs or symptoms of exposure to a toxic substance. She said the substance in the letter was being analyzed and results should be available later tonight.

Postal inspectors were on the scene in Denver. The Associated Press in Centennial is reporting that 12 people were quarantined in Colorado, including three police officers, two firefighters and seven civilians, according to Andy Lyon of Parker South Metro Fire Rescue Authority.

"Our guys did not find any powder. There were maybe a couple of grains of something inside an envelope and they had to kind of work to get a sample," Lyon told the AP.

McCain was near his home in Sedona, Ariz., today filming campaign videos.

The Democratic National Convention is set to convene in Denver on Monday.

The dirty tricks and win at all costs are out of a Hollywood movie.Continue to live the dream and wake up to the fact democracy is a tool to be purchased rather than a vote "By the people for the people".

Look, we´ll probably never know who was the source of this BUT: from the party that brought you Joseph McCarthy, Richard Nixon, Erlichman and Halderman, George W. Bush, Dick Chaney, Karl Rove, John Sununu, swiftboaters et al; it ain't SUCH a stretch.

Just like another team, the Oakland Raiders, The Grand Old Party is famous for playing dirty- something that seem to resonate well among their following.

Seems obvious to me; there are way too many coincidences in this report that dovetail too cleanly. A terror scare at McCain's offices just as the news cycle is turning against him? That alone would be enough, but the part about the envelopes coming from Denver--nice touch--puts it over the top. The fact that there was hardly any "powder" (just a few "grains," whatever that means), and that the letter came from inside a prison make it pretty certain that there was no anthrax involved.

Most likely: smarting from one of the first truly stinging attacks from the Obama campaign and the media not covering it up for them, they look through their mail, which likely brings many threats every day, and finding one from Denver, see it as a perfect opportunity. One call to the police later, and presto! Instant derailing of the news cycle. Timed to come out just when they're publicizing a new smear ad which links Obama to terrorists--another "coincidence"--and you've got yourself a pure Rovian package, a hundred percent.

I would not be surprised if this was one of their reserve plans to be executed on short notice in case of an emergency.

@false Gamble20

Your comment speaks for itself. You have nothing intelligent to say then to spew personal insults (which also imply hateful antisemitism). Have fun Obamamaniacs.

All of you are suffering from a mental disorder known as liberalism.

Posted by: Gamble20 | August 22, 2008 12:02 AM | Report abuse

I just read down through the posts.
Wow you liberals ARE NUTS!

How did the mentally challenged ever get their own political party?
The Obamanut-jobs need to be locked up and the key thrown away.

For God's sake (and ours) remove them from the planet!

Once again we see that there's actually little difference between radical extremist islamic theology, and liberal whacko mentally unstable theology.

They are two sides of the same coin.
There is NOTHING liberal about liberal theology.
It's thugism.

Well nothing surprises me about the Obamist radicals. Anyone know if William Ayers was in Denver when these letters were mailed??

Oh, that was just baby powder that Cindy sent to help with McCain's diaper rash.

Posted by: MSMADAME | August 21, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

It's odd that the letters have McCain's return address on them and the word "me" scratched out next to the word "McCain" in several places.

Even if it was him, they will never know which house they could have been sent from. Asking him certainly won't help.

Republicans still playing the old tactics of "FEAR" I think Bush has already shown how he made fool of us..We do not need one more McSame playing out of Karl Rove's dirty tricks

Boy oh boy..republicans are good. Just when they got the bad news coming out of McCain re his number of homes he owns, they try to make that disappear from the front pages really quickly. Tricks that work in 2000 and 2004 do not work in 2008. Hoax..people beware..

Posted by: silverspring | August 21, 2008 9:00 PM | Report abuse

I bet this must be the handiwork of a Obama robot (as I call his maniacal fans) to ensure that McCain's team is not able to function from Denver during the convention

Please, please, please keep accusing the McCain campaign of doing this to themselves. How's that high road working out for you, crats?

You liberals are maniacs. The evil in this country can be blamed solely on your sophmoric behaviors, you filthy vermons who have nothing better to do with your waste of an existence than to troll news websites blaring how "ITS ALL LIES!!! CONSPIRACY!!!". You all are a bunch of wacko nutjobs. Gorw up you drunks!

I'm guessing it's fake, otherwise it would have just been sent to democrats. I wonder if it'll take us 8 years to solve this one too and end up blaming it on some dead guy. Go back to bed, America, your government is in control. Here, watch some more tv and go shopping. Go back to bed, America.

www.thehill.com GoP has a huge List of big names going to the Demo Convention to crash it.Romney, Guillani and many congressman have lined up daily TV & Radio interviews anything they can do to interrupt the Convention. NOW how desperate does McCain have to get? Nasty, Low down, making up stuff..who is this really? Another Republican. This really infuriates me as Conventions have always been mostly respected. JERKS, Desperate..and I wouldn't be one bit surprised that these 2 so called letters with "white grains" in them are just planted by the Repubs..one more tactic.

So you think Bruce Ivins was the Anthrax killer. Ha Ha The FBI was wrong again! Hopefully it is just white powder, not Anthrax.
Perhaps it is just the fear machine ramping up for the election.
After all Carl R hasn't gone anywhere. Look for the color-coded terror indicator to show up on Fox News again soon. Their die-hard fans are still susceptible to this type of propaganda. Hey the color coded thing stopped weeks after W was elected for a second term. You'd better get out your old duct tape and plastic sheeting, Tom Ridge is on the radar screen again. The Neocons are alive and well and up to their old tricks again. Gosh! if the lemmings fall for this again I will agree that the average American has the IQ of a chimpanzee.

Hopefully someone who reads this "news" realizes this was exactly how Karl Rove started helping people win elections. Rove planted eavesdropping devices in his own candidates offices and "Oh My! What do we have here? Must be the work of the opposition!" when "discovered". Rethuglicans can always be relied upon for dirty tricks. Been doing it since Nixon.
