New McCain Ad Hits Obama on Celebrity, Taxes

By Howard Kurtz

McCain Paints Obama as a Big Taxer

The Ad: Life in the spotlight must be grand, but for the rest of us times are tough. Obama voted to raise taxes on people making just $42,000. He promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family. Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget. Not ready to lead. That's the real Obama.

Analysis: This John McCain ad reprises what has become his signature theme, that Barack Obama is a celebrity with a hidden policy agenda. It opens with crowds cheering Obama and pictorial spreads on the Illinois senator in GQ, Us Weekly and Vanity Fair. But the spot quickly turns into a standard Republican attack on a Democrat as a tax-raising liberal.

The charge that Obama voted to raise taxes on people making $42,000 stretches a valid point. Obama voted for a non-binding Democratic budget resolution that would not have raised anyone's taxes. But it did envision phasing out most of the Bush tax cuts, which would have that effect. (The McCain campaign has backed off a previous charge that Obama would boost taxes at the $31,000 level, labeled false by

The ad is selective in saying that Obama would raise taxes on seniors and "your family," omitting that he would target only families, Social Security recipients and those with capital gains earning more than $250,000 a year. And it is misleading in charging that Obama wants to hike taxes on small business, offering the lame explanation that many affluent taxpayers who would be affected by the income-tax increase also happen to own small businesses. The commercial also leaves out Obama's proposal for a middle-class tax cut.

But more important than the mathematical details is the portrait the Arizona senator is trying to paint of his opponent as an untested leader whose domestic policies are obscured by the media spotlight.

McCain's just using a variant of the old joke: nobody goes to that restaurant, its always too crowded.

I'm more of the mind that the unpopular restaurant is probably empty for a reason.

Anyway, how can we trust a man who swore before G-d that he would be faithful and then cheated on her? He'll swear to uphold the Constitution, and throw it in the garbage. I'm for family values.

Honestly, who hasn't noticed that he's slipping? He got stuck last week trying to make a sentence. That's a far cry from a brilliant Harvard graduate.

I suppose that there are at least 2 Naval Academy graduates that think McCain is bright.

Obama is an idiot! He thinks IRAN is a SMALL COUNTRY!

Did you know that Iran is bigger than Great Britian! It's bigger than France?! It's half the size of Russia and 1/5 the size of U.S.

If you vote for Obama, you vote for the enemy...

McChange/Romney 08' "McChange's Mitt will catch the economy!"

McChange will keep us safe and expand our economy, in times of war, we don't need to vote in the enemy!

I think the Obama camp should respond to mockery with humor ads.1) Cast McCain as "the Grinch", 2) cast him as the bully who's jealous of the smartest kid in the classs. Both would be totally truthful!

How can McCain get away with this. I don't think it's even legal to lie like that. I wish I had a way to get a hold of Obama's campaign to give him some of McCain's greatest hits from town hall meetings. Between that and whats on You Tube, Obama could sink McCain in a few days. Either way, something has to be done about this.

When this campaign started, McCain made it a point to say he'd run a 'clean' campaign and then runs ads filled with obvious lies and innuendo. It would be laughable, but unfortunately their are people (mostly undereducated) that believe this type of thing. Now they will use the Edward's bomb against Obama. If they do, Obama better respond with McCain's numerous infidelities with Cindy (amongst others) during his first marriage. My feeling is Obama is playing rope-a-dope. He's letting McCain spend a lot of money and forcing him to spend money in states he thought were 'safe'. After the convention, I believe the Obama camp will hit McCain hard with ads and finally mention issues like the Keating Five and McCain have to give back illegal contributions from Joradian businessmen.

I think it's time to get real about McCain-- He is not competent to Be President of the United States and the press knows it better than we do. He is semi-senile and under informed. It was appalling when he confused the borders shared with Iran and Afghanistan with Iraq but his mental bumbling keeps getting worse and worse. And now he is clueless about the results of the Hamden trial and makes something up instead? There are men who are young at 72 but McCain is befuddled and contemptuous. I think people will tire quickly of the Obama is a better more popular man than me whine. I certainly am. I have forgotten what it was about John McCain I used to respect.

Why John McCain?

Well I think McCain (McChange) because he is the only solution left! If you doubt McCain's Economic policy, don't worry because "McCain's Mitt will Catch the American Economy..."

If any wants to focus on Mitt's religious background, please do so! I think it would do America well to remember all the canidated Religious backgrounds...

God Bless America!

The Republican attack machine is going full force now with it's lies. And McCain APPROVES. How long will this true hero turned BUSHLIKE SLEAZE be alowed to get so much respect that the MSM is afraid to come out and say he lies. Instead we are now being subject to one more sex scandal on the cable news, about a HASBEEN pol and ambulance chaser.

McCain is just angry because Obama is so popular. Is it any wonder why? An AP-IPSOS poll in July showed that 77% of American's think the country is going in the wrong direction. And then they see who has been in charge and draw an immediate correlation between the state of the country and the Republican party. John McCain is a Republican who ahs voted in support of Bush policies over 95% of the time. McCain has been a senator for more than 10 years, and NOW he's talking about doing something? Yeah, right! All I've heard from McCain is Obama this and Obama that.

McCain suffers from Obama envy!

When April Fool's Day rolls around next year and McCain takes off his mask, will it be Bush or Cheney? I'm betting on Cheney since I haven't seen him in the news for awhile.

Michael4, sorry, but you are the one demonstrating your stupidity. And, of course, you are the only one being "loud."

McCain calls for action that might make a difference. Being Commander and Chief requires someone that has experience, knowledge and judgement to address serious issues in a proactive and meaningful way. Obama has none of these characteristics and he demonstrated them again today when he offered NO plan of action.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 8, 2008 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Obama is a complete fraud. Tries to hide his Marxist, ridiculous Black-liberationist past, has little real experience, and runs a campaign based on useless, feel-good cliches. He can be attacked on many things. Libs will like none of them, but they are all valid.

It's sad to see someone who I think has a moral compass somewhere get manipulated into running a dishonest campaign. It's a preview of a McCain administration; he'll get manipulated by the people closest to him into doing whatever they want, and he'll get righteously indignant and make wild accusations against anyone who doesn't agree.

A McCain presidency would be an unmitigated disaster.

To be loud and demanding is not "leadership"... Your ridiculouly self-described and annointed "test", with you as judge and jury, is lame.

To jump to conclusions and take sides, one against the other, without any investigation or consideration, when time is not of the essence, is a knee-jerk reaction. Obviously, you like that because that is what you do. Yet it is not a characteristic of "leadership".

I'd suggest you think before you expose your opinion for all to see how stupid your comments are.

Of course Obama is not a "leader." Today, Obama was tested and he failed!

McCain calls for Russia to immediately withdraw from Georgia (our ally who has troops in Iraq) and that an emergency session of the UN Security Council be called too address the situation in Georgia.

Obama, on the other hand, "condemns" the actions of Russia and calls for both sides to demonstrate "restraint" and avoid escalation of the conflict.

McCain proves again with his calls for action that he can be Commander in Chief!

Obama proves again with meaningless (and wimpy) words that Obama cannot!!!!!

German Nazi Party member Joseph Goebbels became Adolf Hitler's PROPAGANDA minister in 1933,

which gave him power over all GERMAN MEDIA

cinema, and

THE AMERICAN MEDIA is currently owned by a very few people...there are actually three groups that control 87 Percent of all of the media...

In 1925 Goebbels met the party leader Adolf Hitler. In 1926 he was made Gauleiter, or party leader a sort of unofficial title for Karl the current fascist regime....

JOSEPH GOEBBELS: By exploiting mob emotions and by employing all modern methods of propaganda Goebbels helped Hitler into power.

it's called APPEAL TO EMOTION with no logical's the staff of life for republicans...

GOEBBELS/ROVES work as a propagandist materially aided Hitler's/BUSHes rise to power in 1933/2000. When Hitler seized power in 1933, Goebbels was appointed Reichsminister for propaganda and national enlightenment. From then until his death, Goebbels used all MEDIA of education and communications to further Nazi propagandistic/Monied Elitists aims, instilling in the Germans/Rednecks the concept of their leader as a veritable god and of their destiny as the rulers of the world. In 1938 he became a member of the Hitler cabinet council. Late in World War II, in 1944, Hitler placed him in charge of total mobilization.

As Reichsminister for Propaganda and National Enlightenment, Goebbels was given complete control over THE MEDIA:
radio, press, cinema, and theater;

later he also regimented all German culture. Goebbels placed his undeniable intelligence and his brilliant insight into mass psychology entirely at the service of his party. His most virulent propaganda was against the Jews/Muslims. As a hypnotic orator he was second only to Hitler, and in his staging of mass meetings and parades he was unsurpassed.

Utterly cynical, like Karl Roverer and the rest of the current administration,

he seems to have believed only in the self-justification of does the current administration and it's cronies embedded in your government that someone will INHERIT intact.

Listed below are the principles purported to summarize what made Goebbels tick or fail to tick. They may be thought of as his intellectual legacy. Whether the legacy has been reliably deduced is a methodological question. Whether it is valid is a psychological matter. Whether or when parts of it should be utilized in a democratic society are profound and disturbing problems of a political and ethical nature.

Based upon Goebbels' Principles of Propaganda by Leonard W. Doob, published in Public Opinion and Propaganda; A Book of Readings edited for The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.

1. Propagandist must have access to intelligence concerning events and public opinion.

2. Propaganda must be planned and executed by only one authority. HAVE ONE VOICE....the Bush administration used to provide canned IRAQ INVASION footage that was delivered to television networks and played without editing verbatim during the 2004 election and kept Kerry off of the front page of all publications that I visited...

He didn't complain....funny that eh!?

a. It must issue all the propaganda directives.

b. It must explain propaganda directives to important officials and maintain their morale.

c. It must oversee other agencies' activities which have propaganda consequences....Sounds a bit like the Director of NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE da....Mike McConnel who has been funneling money to his old coheart and IRAN CONTRA felon Adm Poindexter....McConnel was Senior Vice President Booz Allen Hamilton 1996-2006....and Carlyle Group was seeking to buy some of _that_...

can you say conflict of interest and shades of Nazi Death Kampes????

well don't worry, neither can O bah man.....he don't have a clue what he's walking into....that's what they hope and keep him just as ignorant as he already is....

"We need to toe the line on Afghanistan!"

Have any of you ever looked at Obama's record??? Every bill that has had a tax increase up for vote, guess which way Obama voted? Your right in favor of the increase. McCain isn't off base. How about Obama's energy plan? No Nuclear power, No coal, No off shore drilling for oil, no off shore drilling for natural gas, no to opening up more areas for drilling in the US. Oh but he is in favor of airing up our tires and having us give our cars tune ups. By the way I check my tires monthly, so no improvement there for me. And most cars made since the mid 90's don't require tune ups.

Obama is so out of touch with the energy issue! I am not wealthy, middle class and proud of it. The Bush tax cuts give me back about $3,000 a year. Obama wants to let those tax cuts expire but then give me a $1,000 tax rebate. And raise my capital gains taxes from 15% to 28%. So my 401K and retirement investments will start to suffer and I will owe $2,000 more a year in taxes if Obama is elected!

Obama looks and talks good, but his policies will kill this country. Stop looking at the cover and open the book and read what he is offering us!!!!
