Obama Touts Party Unity, but Details Escape

By Anne E. Kornblut
RALEIGH, N.C. -- As he works to win over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's supporters, Sen. Barack Obama might want to brush up on her alma mater.

At a town hall meeting here on Tuesday night, a young woman identified herself as a student at Wellesley (the renowned all-female school in Massachusetts) before asking a question about Democratic Party unity. Obama replied that he had spoken at her school's commencement, then stopped himself, saying perhaps it had been Wesleyan (the co-ed school in Connecticut where he in fact gave this year's commencement address).

"Wellesley or Wesleyan, I get those two confused," Obama said.

While confusing two elite Northeastern schools might help Obama in certain corners, it may not go over as well in the Clinton universe, where her 1969 Wellesley graduation speech is legendary for having launched her onto the national stage. Obama went on to answer the question by saying that the Democratic Party is not as divided as it might appear, calling it as a notion "hyped by the media."

Obama also gave a broad-stroke description of the vice presidential nominee he intends to pick, saying he wants someone who knows where he or she comes from, and could replace him in a crisis, but who is "mad right now" about the problems the country faces.

In a stirring moment at the end of the rally, a man who identified himself as a military veteran currently living in a homeless shelter in Raleigh with about 100 other former service members borrowed the microphone from Obama to ask a question about his plans for homelessness. The man said taking the microphone directly from the candidate's hand made his night.

Unity behind Obama!? Please realize there simply is not enough time for Obama to EARN THE TRUST OF THE VOTERS and there is too much at stake to just hand this election to the republicans! Our COURTS, ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT, INTERNATIONAL STANDING, WOMEN'S RIGHTS.... are at stake! Instead of a symbolic roll call vote, OBAMA MUST NOMINATE HILLARY AT THE CONVENTION and agree to serve as HIILARY’S VP. Think what an EXCITING CONVENTION that will be! Think of the MEDIA coverage! Think how wise and courageous Obama will appear. The Democrats will be UNITED behind this WINNING ticket. The republicans will not be able to adjust their strategy and Dems will win the White House! These SUPER DELEGATES are ENDORSING OBAMA only after he made LARGE CONTRIBUTIONS to their campaigns, even though their CONSTITUENTS OVERWHELMINGLY VOTED FOR HILLARY!

Mixing up Wellesley and Wesleyan - MORE PROOF OF McSenile's feeble mindedness...oh wait, you say Obama did this?

Oh, never mind, it is just an honest mistake anyone could make. Just another case of the MSM unfairly attacking Barak.

See how silly all of this is!

John and Cindy McCain are petty, vicious people who have no sense of decency and no sense of family values.

For them to have adopted that young brown baby was a cover for their past sins. I bet that girl is getting a much smaller trust fund.

If they were good people they would have given one of two of their hundreds of millions to Cindy's sister. And they wouldn't have abandoned her.

Like father, like daughter, like son-in-law. Vicious, nasty, cynical people.

No such report appeared on CNN. This is an outright lie and another sign of desperate B. Husein Obama supporters watching the Democrats and their nominee snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

CNN Reported today that Mccain when in the navel academy was a bigot. When questioned about one Mexican american he tormented, Mccain dismissed it by saying he was teaching him how it was going to be when he got out in the world. I guess the guy should say thank you for all Mccains abuse.

Just in time to arrive before the convention in Denver a new Reuters/Zogby poll gives McCain the lead for the first time in this election season.

This shall lead to further lack of unity in Denver as Hillary's people will profess to having "told you so", in the spirit of Nostradamas.

The Vice presidential pick shall be overshadowed by the lack of decorum and intra-party fighting and McCain will experience the bounce in a complete turnaround of anticipated events.

And so it was written....

I think this ties into the story about Mccain commenting that blacks in Viet Nam were good finding land mines. And the fact he refers to almost all Asians as gooks heard many times by many people.

female and angry, uhmmmmm

Refresing to see an article in the "Politics" section that is so concise about Obama versus concilliatory and awestruck.

Any "hype" is just that; it does not reflect the reality that is crashing down around Obama in the polls, in the % of Democrats who will not vote for him, in the battleground states and the increased number of undecideds in the electoral map. The incident described in this piece is indicative of how many potential voters are not taken with him.

I wonder how the homeless guy got in the door?

UNITY?
Obama listened to spews of HATE and racism about almost every American for 20 YEARS and Obama speaks of UNITY!
UNITY FOR WHOM?
To say this is an insult to every American's intelligience is a huge understatement.

Oh that Anne E. Kornblut! She states that
"While confusing two elite Northeastern schools might help Obama in certain corners, it may not go over as well in the Clinton universe, where her 1969 Wellesley graduation speech is legendary for having launched her onto the national stage."

Which Clinton universe is Anne referring to? The 1969 Clinton universe in which Hillary was ardent Republican? Give me a break.

3....2...1! (Que the Hill-bots). To bash Obama and ignore the plight of the homeless military veteran at Obama's townhall meeting.

So the homeless guy touched his robe ,Oh sorry he took the microphone from his hand and it made his day. Man what media hype. What a scoop. I suppose the poor guy isnt homless anymore because he touched obama? Here the media tell it, Obama realy is the messiah.

I was going to write that I would have voted for Obama if he had not confused with Wesleyan. It would have sounded as stupid as:

"

Yeah..his poll is slipping.....Hillary 2012..I will vote for Mccain this time

Posted by: nobama | August 19, 2008 10:04 PM | Report abuse

The part of this story that needs the attention is the part about the veteran who lives in a shelter with 100 other homeless vets.

Who truly gives a rat's something or other whether Obama's tiny oversight will go over well in the queen's universe?

Actually in the People's Republic of Cambridge, where Obama earned his law degree, buses arrive with women from Wellesley for the weekend parties at MIT and Harvard.

So this little episode is proof positive that Obama was a geek in grad school.

uhhht... ohhh, here come the Hillbots. Not something a guy would know, or if he did... might be something to that Sinclair story. Anyway, fasten your seat belts as in the degree of passion over such a slight will bring out the the erudites, as in hell hath no fury like those scorned, AKA the 18 million cracks in the Party.
